Harriet B. Bly
CONNEAUT - Harriet B. Bly, 82, formerly of West Main Road in Conneaut,
died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
She was born May 6, 1920, in Albion, Pa., the daughter of Keith and Margaret
(Luce) Hayes, and spent most of her life in the Conneaut area.
She worked for Nielsen's Wall Paper and Paint Store and the former Astatic Corp.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of
Ashtabula.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Anderson of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John L.; and a
brother, Andrew Hayes.
Service is 1 p.m. Monday at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St.,
Conneaut. Bishop Rodney Rodriguez, of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints of Ashtabula, will officiate. Burial will be at Center
Cemetery in Conneaut.
Calling hour at the funeral home is noon Monday until the time of service.

CONNEAUT - Clyde "Dick" Burk Jr., 82, of Middle Road, died Wednesday,
Nov. 6, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville, following a
nine-year illness.
He was born May 13, 1920, son of Clyde, Sr. and Nellie Marie (Writsel) Burk, in
Zalesky.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army as a medic attached to the 330th Engineers. He
served in the Asian Theater and worked on building the Burma Road. He moved to
Conneaut 57 years ago where he worked for the former Norton Co. for 20
years and the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad for 20 years. He also owned the
West End Coal Co. for 10 years.
Mr. Burk was a member of the Federated Church of East Springfield, Pa.,
Evergreen Lodge #222 F and AM, and Rose Chapter #22 OES, of which he was past
patron. He also was a member of the clown unit of Zem Zem Shrine of Erie, Pa.
and the former Rosebud Clowns, Conneaut. He helped establish the July 4th
Committee in Conneaut and enjoyed woodworking, ceramics and was a
lapidary.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Steinhoff Burk, whom he married May 7, 1945; a
daughter, Susan Schor of Conneaut; a son, Larry Burk of Powhatan, Va.;
and three grandchildren, Scott and David Burk and Kristen Schor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, in Greenlawn
Memory Gardens, North Kingsville. The Rev. Ed Huntley of Federated Church
will officiate.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Conneaut Rescue Squad or Ashtabula Regional Home Health. Envelopes will be

Eleanor E. Warren
ALBION, Pa. - Eleanor E. Warren, 73, of Cherry Hill Road, died Monday, Sept. 16,
2002, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie.
Born Jan. 4, 1929, in Ashtabula, she was the daughter of Vaino and Elsie (Sidbeck)
Malin. She married Ray A. Warren Nov. 22, 1952.
A resident of the Albion area for the past 44 years, she was employed as a
machine operator for the former Astatic Corp., Conneaut, for 38 years,
retiring in 1990.
Mrs. Warren attended the Federated Church and was a member of the Cherry Hill
Grange and HAWK, an animal protection organization.
An avid bowler, she enjoyed her family, horses, gardening, canning, traveling,
reading and helping others.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Sr.; two sons, Ray A. Jr. of Ewa Beach,
Hawaii, and Timothy of Albion, Pa.; a brother, Wesley D. Malin of Conneaut;
four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Thomas A. Warren; and a sister,
Inez Ylisaari.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208
Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Edward Huntley, pastor of the
Federated Church of East Springfield, officiating. Burial will be in Center
Cemetery, Conneaut.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

CONNEAUT - Jean K. Laitinen, 75, of Sandusky Street, died Friday, Nov.
22, 2002, while visiting in Richardson, Texas. She was born March 22, 1927, in
Conneaut, the daughter of Emil V. and Susan J. (Mackey) Hill.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, Mrs. Laitinen was a 1945 graduate of
Conneaut High School and served in Conneaut Municipal Court,
primarily as deputy clerk of courts for 24 years, and then retiring as clerk of
courts.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she served on the
funeral meal committee and was a member of the church's sewing club for more
than 50 years. She was also active in the Ladies of Finnish Heritage and
volunteered at Brown Memorial Hospital. She played piano and enjoyed music,
being with her family, especially her grandchildren, and attending her high
school class get-togethers.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen Ryan of Deltona, Fla.; her son, Mark R. of
Conneaut; and three grandchildren, Kevin Ryan, and Scott and Lisa
Laitinen.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Eugene J. Laitinen, in
1995.
Service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Lake Road and
Grove Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. Clyde A. McGee officiating.
Burial will be in Center Cemetery in Conneaut.

CRANESVILLE, Pa. - Deene (Dean) McLoyd Fowler, Jr., 53, died Friday, Dec. 27,
2002, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., following a brief illness. He was
born July 22, 1949, in Conneaut, the son of Emma (Lyubi) Fowler and the
late Deene (Dean) McLoyd Fowler, Sr.
Following graduation in 1967 from Conneaut High School, Mr. Fowler
entered the U.S. Marine Corp and served in Vietnam. He was employed as a
supervisor at General Aluminum in Conneaut and had previously worked at
Emco-Wheaton.
A born-again Christian for the past 27 years, he was an active member of the
Conneaut Church of God, where he was an elder and a lay minister, taught
Sunday school and adult Bible study, and served as head of the missions
department. He traveled to Ukraine in June as a missionary, and participated in
the church's new construction project. He was devoted to his church and family.
He enjoyed helping others, playing golf, softball, fishing and Nascar racing.
Survivors include his mother, Emma Fowler of Conneaut, his wife, Karen M.
(Notte) Diehl Fowler, whom he married Sept. 7, 2002, two sons, Christopher
Fowler of Seattle, Wash. and Anthony Fowler of Conneaut; one daughter,
Amanda Fowler of Conneaut, three grandchildren, Hannah, Grace and
Christopher Fowler; three stepchildren, Carson Diehl of East Springfield, Pa.,
Kylee Diehl at home and Justin Diehl of Albion, Pa. Also surviving are his
former wife, Kathryn A. Fowler of Conneaut, two brothers, Richard M.
Fowler of Cortland and Terry Fowler of Conneaut; and three sisters, Diana
Wright and Jennie Chicatelli, both of Conneaut and Lorna Radcliffe of
Painesville.
He was preceded in death by his father in March, a brother, Anthony Fowler in
September, 1963 and both sets of his grandparents.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday, at the Conneaut Church of God, 5327 Center
Road, Conneaut, with the Rev. Raymond L. Lamb, officiating. Burial will
follow in Center Cemetery, Conneaut, with military honors accorded by the
Pvt. Henry Kalinowski Detachment #782 of the Marine Corps League.

Ethel M. Drennen
CONNEAUT - Ethel M. "Mitzi" Drennen, 84, of Conneaut, died Saturday,
Sept. 21, 2002, at the Villa at the Lake in Conneaut.
She was born Aug. 15, 1918 in Sharon, Pa., the daughter of John and Blanche
(Nye) McConnell.
She married Bert C. Drennen on Sweetest Day, Oct. 18, 1941 in Hubbard.
Mrs. Drennen had been a Conneaut resident since 1955 and was a well-known
real estate agent, who worked for many local brokers and received many awards
for sales achievements.
She was a member of the National and State Association of Realtors and the
Ashtabula County Board of Realtors.
Mrs. Drennen was a member of the United Church of Christ where she served many
years on boards and committees.
She was also a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the
Conneaut Chamber of Commerce, and the Conneaut Community Center for
the Arts.
Mrs. Drennen served as president of the Rowe Middle School PTA during the early
1960s, when the communities of Conneaut and Lakeville and their separate
school systems merged.
She loved her large extended family and enjoyed raising pets and playing bridge.
Mrs. Drennen also enjoyed music, dancing and participated in many of the musical
productions that the former MacDowell Music Club and Conneaut Rotary Club
formerly co-sponsored.
Survivors include two sons, Bert C. and Keith A., both of Conneaut; her
daughter, Pamela R. Knight of Westfield, Ind.; five grandchildren, Kimberly
Schock, Keith A. Drennen Jr., J.R. Knight, Patrick Knight, and Caitlin Drennen;
and three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Adam Schock and Kayla Drennen; and two
sisters, Hazel Ferguson of Hubbard and Ruth Rising of Cortland.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1982; two brothers,
Hugh and John McConnell; and sisters, Elma Davis, Ester Donahue, Gladys
Williams, Martha Kay, Henrietta Morris and Pearl Stafford.
Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation
Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Walter Coy, pastor of United
Church of Christ officiating.
Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.

CONNEAUT - Glenn H. Loomis, 87, of Spring Street, died Saturday, Nov.
30, 2002, at Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville.
He was born Aug. 10, 1915, in Conneaut, a son of Stanley R. and Bertha B.
(Huston) Loomis.
A 1934 graduate of Conneaut High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and
served with the Seabees during World War II. He served with the Navy Reserve
unit of the Seabees in Erie, Pa., as senior chief petty officer, retiring after
30 years.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Navy Seabee Veterans of
America Inc., and Cowle Post 151 of the American Legion.
Mr. Loomis was a self-employed building contractor and a partner in Loomis and
Laituri Builders. He built many homes, and remodeled many businesses, in
Conneaut, Ashtabula, Erie and Cleveland.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 38 years and was an Eagle
Scout. He was a 25-year member of the Lakeville (East Conneaut) Fire Department
and served as chief in 1949. He was a patrol officer with the Lakeville Police
Department and a lieutenant with the Conneaut Police Auxiliary. He also was a
member of the Deputy Sheriff's Auxiliary.
Mr. Loomis joined East Conneaut United Methodist Church in 1927. He served there
in many capacities, including supervising the building of the parsonage on Rowe
Street and remodeling the gymnasium in the Sunday school following a fire. He
also was a member of the church administrative board during the building of the
new church on Furnace Road.
Survivors include his wife, Betty E. (Strong) Loomis; two daughters, Shirley J.
Smith Krieg of Conneaut, and Carol L. Johnson of Kingsville; a sister, Grace
Mozena of Conneaut; four grandchildren, Sharon Miller, and Douglas, Brian and
Michael Smith; three stepgrandchildren, Mathew and Daniel Krieg and Karen
Colburn; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Viola J. Loomis.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at East Conneaut United Methodist Church, 809
Furnace Road, Conneaut, with the Rev. Armando Arellano and the Rev. Tim Kraus
officiating.
Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.

KINGSVILLE - Eugene M. (Gene) Sherman, 41, formerly of Chestnut Street,
Conneaut, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Nursing
Home, Kingsville, where he had been a patient the last seven years.
He was born Sept. 12, 1961, in Conneaut, to Patricia (Moore) Watson and Earl
Sherman.
Mr. Sherman attended Conneaut and Ashtabula schools and worked for the
Village of North Kingsville road department. Before his illness, he worked as an
auto body technician at Modern Auto Body.
He enjoyed hiking, fishing and playing with his daughter.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Patricia and Ellis Watson, of
Jefferson; his daughter, Ashley Sherman of North Kingsville; a stepson, James
Kirk of Ashtabula; three sisters, Cindy Fink and Paula Brunty, both of
Ashtabula, and Pam Sherman of Painesville; and four brothers, Earl of West
Springfield, Pa., and Rick, Tim and Mike, all of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Sherman.
Funeral is noon Wednesday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208
Liberty St., Conneaut, officiated by Dennis Cole of the Jefferson
congregation of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery,

CONNEAUT- Margaret L. Flack, 58, of South Parrish Road, Conneaut,
died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002 at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 28, 1944 in Syracuse, N.Y., and was a daughter of John "Jack"
and Violet (Rossiter) Frost.
Mrs. Flack was a Conneaut resident since 1946, she was employed for 16
years in the housekeeping department at Brown Memorial Hospital. She attended
Amboy United Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, candy
making, fishing, camping and most sports.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd L. Flack, whom she married Nov. 23, 1968; a
daughter, Karen A. Brooks of Conneaut; two sisters, Kathy Hicks of
Syracuse, N.Y. and Gayle Fertig of Conneaut; one brother Bill Frost of
Conneaut and three grandchildren, Josh, Jonathon and Lela Brooks.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Marcy Funeral Home and

CONNEAUT - Thomas H. Kurtz, 48, of Lakeview Avenue, died Tuesday, Nov.
19, 2002, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 5, 1954, in Akron, to Edwin F. and Adele H. (Hart) Kurtz.
Mr. Kurtz attended the First United Methodist Church and was a loving caregiver
to his parents. He also enjoyed music.
Survivors include cousins Lorene Butcher and Gilbert Hart, both of Akron.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday, at Glenwood Cemetery, officiated
by the Rev. David Harding of the First United Methodist Church.

CONNEAUT - Gertrude M. McManus, 95, of Lake Road, died Sunday, Dec. 8,
2002, at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
She was born Feb. 22, 1907, in Conneaut, the daughter of A.W. and Elma
Hart. She had resided here her entire life.
Mrs. McManus enjoyed reading and taking care of her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Dolores Castrilla of Conneaut; four
granddaughters, Patricia DeMarco, Sally Rossick and JoEllen Cameron, all of
Conneaut, and Susan Adams of Mentor; six great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John K.; a sister,
Katheryn Rosenberg; and a brother, Clarence Hart.
Graveside service is 1 p.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Cemetery. The Rev.
Walter Coy, pastor of the United Church of Christ, will officiate.

AVON - Martha Spieldenner, 86, died Nov. 10, 2002, at Good Samaritan Nursing
Home in Avon.
She was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Braddock, Pa., the daughter of Curt and Agnes
Bonney. She lived in North Ridgeville for most of her life.
She enjoyed reading.
Survivors include her two daughters, Marilyn Spieldenner of Avon, and Karen
Abouelsoud of North Ridgeville; a brother, William Bonney of Turtle Creek, Pa.;
and other relatives in the Conneaut area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents; three sisters,
Margaret Struiff, Wilma Wynn and Irene Sima; and a brother, James Bonney.
Service is 2 p.m. Friday at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, 32900 Detroit Road,
Avon, with the Rev. Bill Goodrich officiating.
A private burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut.

CONNEAUT - Martha Caroline Dudley, 86, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at
her home on Liberty St.
She was born March 28, 1916, to Guy and Nena (English) Shearer. She married
Arthur W. Dudley on March 7, 1937.
A devoted mother and grandmother, and caregiver to many others, Mrs. Dudley
lived most of her life in Conneaut, graduating from Conneaut High
School in 1933, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the
Defiance Club.
Mrs. Dudley was active in Girl Scouts for many years and served as a leader for
the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.
Mrs. Dudley was president of the Broad Street School PTA, the Conneaut
PTA's council, and the Conneaut High School Band Boosters. She served on
the election board for 50 years. She served in many community and other
organizations, including the Pythian Sisters, for which she was pianist for many
years, and the Conneaut Tree Commission. She was a member of the Woman's
Christian Temperance Union, the Rebekahs, Order of the Eastern Star, the Women's
Benefit Association and the Sam Wharram Nature Club. As a young woman, she sang
in the choir of the Conneaut United Church of Christ, where she was a member.
Mrs. Dudley worked for the Conneaut Creamery and, later in life, as a
Conneaut reporter for the Erie Times-News. She also worked as a baby-sitter,
helping to put her children through college.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Arthur; three daughters, Jane Ron of
Youngsville, Pa., Margie Baker of Russell, Pa., and Ruth Dudley of Conneaut;
a son, Robert Dudley of Conneaut; 10 grandchildren, the Rev. Andrew
Spore, Rachel Camp, Maria Taylor, Jeffrey and Jason Baker, Grace, Luis and Nena
Dudley, and Jennifer and Lori Dudley; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Walter Shearer, Klun
Shearer and Robert Shearer; infant twin sons, Billy and Jimmy; and an infant
daughter, Alice Jean.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Marcy
Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. The Rev. Walter Coy, of the
United Church of Christ, and the Rev. Stephen T. Szilagyi will officiate.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

CONNEAUT - Ida A. Grice, 85, of Liberty Street, died Wednesday, Sept. 11,
2002, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital, Conneaut.
Born Aug. 27, 1917, in Conneaut, she was a daughter of Delano S. and Mae J.
(Jones) Gruey and was a lifelong resident of Conneaut.
She was a graduate of Conneaut High School and attended Spencerian Business
College, Cleveland.
She was employed as a bookkeeper at Newberry's, a cashier at Loblaws and was a
secretary for Farmers National Bank in Conneaut, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ and enjoyed golf, playing cards,
reading and, most of all, spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Charles E. (Gene), whom she married June 9,
1948; a daughter, Janet M. Turner of Amherst; two sons, George E. of Ashtabula
and Jerry H. of Mayville, N.Y.; two sisters, Maralee E. Gruey of Alliance and
Marguerite E. Graff of Conneaut; and two brothers, DeStewart E. Gruey of
Conneaut and Jack J. Gruey of Erie; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren;
and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Sara Mae Gruey, in
2000; and a brother, Carl Gruey, in infancy.
Graveside service is 11 a.m. Saturday in Glenwood Cemetery, with her
brother-in-law the Rev. A.K. Graff officiating.

Dorothy B. Dixon
ASHTABULA - Dorothy B. Dixon, 76, of Ashtabula, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002,
at her home.
She was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Raleigh County, W. Va., the daughter of King
David and Blanche Agnes (Ervin) Bish and has been a area resident since 1959.
She married Dalton Dixon, Sr., on Sept. 21, 1945.
Mrs. Dixon retired from Item Fiber Industries and also worked at Dunbar
Greenhouses.
She enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking and shopping, but most of all she loved
spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her five children, Dalton Dixon, Jr., Brenda Leers, Melvin
Dixon, Doreen Finlaw and Richard Dixon, all of Ashtabula; four sisters, Jessie
Kennedy of Ashtabula, Violet Dillon of Oak Hill, W. Va., Carol Smith and Belinda
Clayton of New London, N.C.; two brothers, Curtis Bish of Conneaut and
Jimmy Bish of New London, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1999; a son, Dennis
Dixon in 1977 and a daughter, Shelia Marie at birth.
Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect
Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Kenneth Roberts of the Pentecostal Church of God
officiating.

CONNEAUT - Stuart L. Curtis, 76, of Lake Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002,
at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, following a five-year illness.
He was born Dec. 23, 1925 in Conneaut, the son of Sidney L. and Mary E.
(Thompson) Curtis.
Mr. Curtis was a lifelong Conneaut resident and was a 1946 graduate of the
former Rowe High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the LST 537 in both the Atlantic and Pacific
during World War II.
Mr. Curtis was employed as a machinist for the Nickel Plate Railroad in Conneaut
and retired from Conrail Railroad Collinwood yards in 1985 after 40 years of
service.
He was a licensed Realtor and retired at the end of 2001 after serving as
manager of Joan Curtis Realty from 1985 to 1997. Mr. Curtis was involved in
Curtis Appraisal Services.
He was a member of East Conneaut United Methodist Church for 49 years, Cowle
Post 151 of the American Legion, Conneaut Rotary Club, Evergreen Lodge 222 F &
AM, Al Koran Shriners, member and past patron of Rose Chapter 22 Order of
Eastern Star and had received the Honor Grand Gross of Color from the Ohio
Assembly of Rainbow for Girls.
He was also a member of the National and State LST Association and the Northeast
Ohio Amphibs.
Mr. Curtis enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling abroad revisiting areas of his
World War II travels and his family and friends across the U.S.
Survivors include his wife Joan (Eddy) Curtis, whom he celebrated their 52nd
wedding anniversary Sept. 9.; three daughters, Bonnie Harris of Medina, Jill
Rudler of New Albany and Sarah Beall of Hudson; two sons, Greig of Conneaut, and
Jack of Westerville; six grandchildren, Ann Gotte, Mark Curtis, Elliot Harris,
Andrew Beall, Ryan and Ashley Curtis; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters,
Viola Murkins of Meadville, Pa. and Judy Ring of Cocoa, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Jerry, Fred, Neal and
Leonard; and his sister, Georgene Byrd.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, at Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208
Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Armando Arellano of East Conneaut United
Methodist Church and Rev. Hugh H. Hubbard, Jr., of Mutual Grace United Methodist
Church in Urbana officiating.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, with full military
honors by Cowle Post 151 of the American Legion.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with Masonic
services to be conducted at 8:30 p.m.

WILLOUGHBY - Ellen S. Sippola, 85, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Fairmont
Health Center in Willoughby.
She was born Dec. 7, 1916, in East Springfield, Pa., to Solomon and Marie
Kasatie.
Mrs. Sippola was retired from Andrews School, where she was a house mother for
many years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Fairport Harbor for more
than 50 years and attended Christ Lutheran Church in Willoughby. She enjoyed
making crafts of various kinds.
Survivors include four sons, Errol A. of Willoughby, Jack S. of St. Petersburg,
Fla., Glenn G. of Concord Township, and Roger P. of El Paso, Texas; two
daughters, Gail Moulton of Palmetto, Fla., and Saima Kelley of Port Charlotte,
Fla.; two brothers, Jacob E. Kasatie of Conneaut, and Viojo E. Kasatie of
Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Elsa Dross, also of Albuquerque, Martha K.
Punkar of Conneaut, and Sylvia V. Lauttmus of Milwaukee; 16
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan Sippola, in March 1967, her
parents; five brothers, Tovio E., Solomon E., Andrew E., Martin and John; and a
sister, Lempi Kasatie.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville.

CONNEAUT - Doris M. Greenfield, 78, formerly of Peach Street, Conneaut died
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at the Inn Conneaut Health Center.
She was born Feb. 8, 1924 in Conneaut, the daughter of Fya and Charlotte (Louis)
Bunnell and was a lifelong Conneaut resident.
Mrs. Greenfield was employed by the First Federal Savings and Loan in Conneaut
for more than 20 years and enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her son, Larry W. of Lyman, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Scott
Greenfield and Tammy Millard, both of Conneaut; two great-grandchildren, Alexis
and Brittany Millard of Conneaut; and three brothers, Claire Bunnell of Florida,
James and Richard Bunnell, both of Conneaut.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Paul and Merle
Bunnell.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m., Saturday at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North
Kingsville, with family member Joseph Greenfield officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Arnold A. Laine
CONNEAUT - Arnold A. (Archie) Laine, 81, of Mill Street, died Tuesday, Sept.
24, 2002, at University Hospital, Cleveland, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1921, in Conneaut, he was a son of Anton and Selma (Parkomaki)
Laine.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, he was a 1939 Conneaut High School graduate and
served on the reunion planning committees. He was a carpenter by trade and
worked for several area contractors, including Loomis and Laituri, John Wirkkala,
Jim Bunnell and Waino Mackey, before retiring from the Pittsburgh and Conneaut
Dock Co.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Italian and North
African theaters of operation. He was a member and past commander of Cowle Post
151, American Legion.
Mr. Laine was a member of the Democratic Party and was interested in government
affairs and politics. He enjoyed watching C-Span I and C-Span II to keep up with
current affairs.
An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns and Indians. He
enjoyed outside work, wildlife, his family and especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Helen M. (Surma), whom he married May 26, 1945; two
daughters, Cindy A. Downs of Yorktown, Va., and Janie K. Laine of Ashtabula; a
son, Greg A., of Sugar Land, Texas; a sister, Viola Halkola of Hancock, Mich.;
two brothers, Raymond of Conneaut, and Donald of Cedarburg, Wis., nine
grandchildren, Jennifer Vincent, Jessica Downs, Timothy, Kristen and Melissa
Haight, John Loeffel Jr., Erika Loeffel, Melanie and Eric Laine, and a
great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

CONNEAUT - Albert A. Bess, 83, of Madison Street, died Monday, Sept. 30,
2002, at his home.
He was born March 10, 1919, in Norwich, Pa., to Clifford and Hulda (Johnson)
Bess. He lived most of his life in this area.
Mr. Bess was employed by the former Nickel Plate and the N&W Railroad for more
than 30 years. He retired in 1976 as a bridge inspector.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater of operations
during World War II.
Mr. Bess was a member of the First Baptist Church of Conneaut. He enjoyed
gardening, model railroading, his family and walking.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen, to whom he was married for 56 years;
daughters Martha Schwartfigure of Wooster and Ann Shaheen of West Virginia; and
grandchildren Jake and Katie Schwartfigure of Wooster.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clifford and Richard Bess.
Private graveside service is 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Memory Gardens,
officiated by the Rev. Todd Regester, pastor of First Baptist Church of

Eleanor J. Jenkins
ASHTABULA - Eleanor J. Jenkins, 80, of Pennsylvania Avenue, died Saturday, Sept.
28, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville.
She was born June 9, 1922, in Conneaut, to Oscar and Jennie (Lintala) Anderson.
Mrs. Jenkins worked as a nurse for more than 30 years at Ashtabula General
Hospital and was the supervisor of surgery.
She enjoyed camping in her younger years.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Jenkins of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 2000, and her parents.
Service is 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel,

Gilbert E. Wilson
CONNEAUT - Gilbert Eugene Wilson, 83, of Mill Street, died Thursday, Aug. 8,
2002, at the Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa.
Born April 17, 1919, in Conneaut, he was the son of John William and Ella
Wilson, and had been a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Wilson was an engineer for the Nickel Plate Railroad for more than 30 years,
retiring 1977.
He married Sally Elsie Dunlap on Aug. 12, 1941, in Portland, Ore.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army 1st Ranger Battalion.
He was a golfer and belonged to the senior league at Windy Hill Golf Course and
Hickory Grove Golf Course.
During his time on the links, he scored two holes in one.
Mr. Wilson was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Conneaut; Masonic
Evergreen Lodge 222, 32nd Degree at the Valley of Cleveland, past high priest of
Conneaut Chapter 76 and was a Cache Commandry 27, Conneaut Council 40.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jonnye Wilson of California and Mindy
Bihlajama of Ashtabula; a sister, Dorothy Peabody of Oregon; four grandchildren,
Carrissa, Edward and Kyle Bihlajama and Julie Luce, all of Ashtabula; and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Gilbert; and a sister,
June Vaage.

CONNEAUT - Naomi K. Schlaich, 68, of John Ave., died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at
home.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, she was born April 28, 1934, the daughter of Irad
P. and Georgia (Hazeltine) Felch. She married George Schlaich on Aug. 14, 1953,
at East Conneaut United Methodist Church.
She was a 1953 Conneaut High School graduate and was a member of East Conneaut
United Methodist Church, where she served as maintenance worker for 40 years.
She enjoyed working and being with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Linda Gillespie of Conneaut; a son,
Paul of Conneaut; five grandchildren, Josh and Paul Schlaich, Allison and Jordan
Fertig, and Meghan Gillespie; her twin sister, Norma Palo of Monroe Township,
and her brother, George "Joe" Felch of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Doris Bearce, and two
brothers, Irad "Skeet" Felch Jr., and Cy Holcomb.
Service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at East Conneaut United Methodist Church, 809 Furnace

NORTH KINGSVILLE - Marie A. Faulkerson, 61, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at
University Hospitals in Cleveland.
She was born Sept. 5, 1941, in Conneaut, to Charles and Dorothy (Beeman)
Seaton.
Mrs. Faulkerson was a lifetime Ashtabula resident and married William Faulkerson
Sept. 2, 1960. She worked 20 years at Premix and was working at TA Truck Stop in
Kingsville.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ashtabula. She was a very
devoted grandmother and was described as a very loyal friend who would help
anyone who needed her.
Survivors include her husband, son William Jr. of Altoona, Pa.; daughter Theresa
Munda of Ashtabula; brother Stanely Giddings of Ashtabula; sisters Jeanette
Gluvna, Lela Dickson and Virginia Davis, all of Ashtabula; and grandchildren Joe
Paulino, Anthony Munda and Nicholas Munda, all of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

CONNEAUT - Sulo P. "Pat" Nimelli, 86, of Broad Street, died Wednesday,
Nov. 6, 2002, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa., following an apparent
coronary.
He was born May 28, 1916, in Conneaut, the son of Jacob and Maria (Toppi)
Nimelli.
Mr. Nimelli was a lifelong Conneaut resident and a 1937 graduate of
Conneaut High School. He began his career in 1941 as a machinist at the
Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co. and retired in 1978 after more than 37
years. Mr. Nimelli was also a former city councilman from the fourth ward.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he had served as head
usher and chairman of the trustees; a member of Evergreen Lodge 222 Free and
Accepted Masons and Rose Chapter 22 Order of Eastern Star.
Mr. Nimelli enjoyed many sports and coached Little League baseball at
Conneaut Local Youth Organization Field for many years. He enjoyed his
family, bowling, golfing and watching sports on television.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty J. (Davison) Nimelli, whom he
married March 17, 1942; two daughters, Janice Day of Erie, Pa., and Connie
Rockwell of Cleveland; four grandchildren, Kelly Day Keeney, Joseph Day, T.J.
and Andy Rockwell; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Keeney and Faith Rockwell; and
two sisters, Nelma Snyder of Conneaut and Sylvia Carson of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Marian Nyberg, Vivian
Nimelli and Verna Pulli; five brothers, Arvo, Urho, Edward, Robert and John.

MARENO VALLEY, Calif. - Stephen Molner, 63, formerly of Conneaut, died
Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at his home.
He was born March 22, 1939, in Detroit, the son of Stephen and Edna Mae (Fuller)
Molner.
He had lived in California for the past 15 years. He also lived in Kent and in
Liberty Township.
Mr. Molner retired from McDonnell Douglas Corp. as a quality assurance engineer.
He was a 1958 graduate of Conneaut High School and then served with the
U.S. Navy from 195862.
He received his bachelor of science degree in aerospace technology from Kent
State University after completing his service with the Navy.
In his leisure, he enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his wife, the former Linda Norton, to whom he had been married
for the past 37 years; two daughters, Natali Schneider of North Lima, and Nadine
Schuller of McDonald; a son, Scott Molner, also of McDonald; four grandchildren,
Brad and Brittany Schneider, and Tori and Michael Schuller; and a sister, Nancy
Ulrich of Ottumwa, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepfather, Joseph Pizzuto.

11, 2002, at her home following a three-year illness.
Mrs. Clough was born Oct. 12, 1942, in Erie, the daughter of Wilbur and Mable

A lifelong Conneaut resident, she was a graduate of the former Rowe High
School and was employed as a fiscal clerk for the Ashtabula County Board of
Mental Retardation/ Developmental Disabilities.
She enjoyed spending time with her family - especially her grandchildren -
shopping, and the Cleveland Indians.
Survivors include her two daughters, Candace Clough of Findlay, and Tiffani
Brink of Conneaut; and two grandchildren, Shae and Sierra Brink, both of

KINGSVILLE — Mary E. Heaven, 79, formerly of Craytor Avenue, Conneaut,
died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of George and Anna
(Baker) Maines.
A resident of Conneaut for more than 40 years, Mrs. Heaven was a devoted
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She volunteered much of her time to
fund raising for Happy Hearts School and AshCraft Industries. She also enjoyed
flower gardening and cooking.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Fletcher of Franklin, Pa., Anna
Dewey and Judy Smock, both of Conneaut; four sons, Gary G. of Ashtabula,
Leroy W. of Waterford, Pa., Joseph C. of Albion, Pa. and Duane of North
Kingsville; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two sisters,
Della Saunders and LaVern Taylor, both of Trafford, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy and her parents.

CONNEAUT - Cecelia I. Hinkle, 93, of West Street, died Friday, Nov.
22, 2002, at the Villa at the Lake. She was born Aug. 12, 1909, in Erie, Pa., a
daughter of Henry J. and Mary J. (Mooney) Wickles.
Mrs. Hinkle was a Conneaut High School graduate and attended Buffalo City
Training Hospital for Nurses. She then worked as a registered nurse at Myer
Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., and at Brown Memorial Hospital in
Conneaut. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and Rose Chapter
22, Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, traveling, flowers,
wintering in Kissimmee, Fla., and music, especially listening to organ
recordings.
Survivors include a son, Anthony M. Serena of California; her niece and
caregiver Sandra Dalrymple of Conneaut; five grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth G. Hinkle, in
1989; and two stepbrothers, Harry and Sam Serena.

ASHTABULA - Ronald L. Lott Sr., 60, of Lake Avenue, died Saturday, Nov. 23,
2002, at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born March 6, 1942, in Chillicothe, the
son of John E. and Bessie Lott.
A Conneaut resident most of his life, Mr. Lott worked for Allied Resinous
and retired in 1994. Most recently, he was a cook at the former Capt. Jack's
restaurant in Conneaut. He was affiliated with the Church of Christ in
Conneaut, and he enjoyed fishing, model trains and spending time with his
family and friends.
Survivors include five daughters, Cheryl Lott of Conneaut, Loretta Dodge
of Ashtabula, Tammie Pinfield of Windham, and Rebecca Lott and Cindy Dodge, both

NORTH KINGSVILLE - Eugene G. Cartner, 71, of West Center Street, died Sunday,
Dec. 8, 2002, at Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.
He was born Feb. 7, 1931, in Pierpont Township, the son of William and Flore
(Case) Cartner. He had been a lifetime area resident.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was an officer and member of the East Ashtabula
Club and was a member of the Young Men's Social Club.
Mr. Cartner was employed with Greenleaf Motors for 35 years, retiring in 1993 as
a long-distance truck driver.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and loved a good joke.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. (Tracy) Cartner, whom he married Oct. 6,
1951; two sons, Eugene and Rodney Cartner, both of Ashtabula; a daughter, Bonita
Hasson of Denver; five grandchildren, Crystal, Justin, Kayla, Rodney and
Michelle; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, William Cartner Jr. and Jerry
Cartner, both of Ashtabula, and Ronald Cartner of Utah; and a sister, Janet
Powers of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lloyd Cartner; two daughters,
Linda Smith and Juanita F. Cartner; and four brothers, Donald, Walter, Kenneth

CHICAGO, Ill. - Seaman Christopher C. Cork, 20, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002,
at the Froedtert Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisc. Cork was in basic training
camp at the Great Lakes Naval Center in Chicago, Ill.
He was born Oct. 5, 1982, to Chris L. Cork of Geneva and Diana Smith Grandinetti
of Brandon, Fla. He lived in Conneaut until he was 15, then moved to
Brandon, Fla. with his mother.
Mr. Cork graduated from Brandon High School in 2002, where he enjoyed sports and
was a member of the high school track team. He enjoyed surfing, swimming, golf
and basketball. He volunteered much of his time to Boys Town.
Survivors include his parents; grandmothers Marty Perry of Mentor and Peggy Dodd
of Conneaut; sisters Katarina Cork of Geneva, and Jennifer Lynn Cork and
Stephanie Giardinieri, both of Brandon, Fla.; brother Zach Cork of Geneva; and
fiancee Nicole Cisco of Brandon, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Charles "Bill" W. Cork and Joseph
A. Smith.

ASHTABULA Nellie F. Griffith, 76, of North Bend Road, died Wednesday,
December 25, 2002, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Logan, W.V., the daughter of Truman and Emily (Pridemore)
Stevenson and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1951.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as a nurse's aide at Park Haven Nursing Home
and the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Griffith was a member of Bible Baptist Church and enjoyed reading,
crocheting, cooking and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, George Griffith Jr., whom she married July 30,
1945; eight children, George Griffith III of Conneaut, Donald, David and
Kenneth Griffith, all of Ashtabula, Deborah Kneisley of Rochester, N.H., Donna
Griffith of Ashtabula; Tianna Durbin of Puvcellville, Va. and William Griffith
of Canton; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Ann
Dingus of Melbourne, Fla., and Sue Lopez of Columbus; and two brothers, Billy
Ray Stevenson of Tuscolumbia, Ala., and Willie Gerald Stevenson of Robinette,

Foreign Wars of Ashtabula, as well as a member of Cowle Post 151 of the American
Legion, and Eagles 408 of Conneaut. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and
camping.

SPRING HILL, Fla. - Hilda L. Wolfe, 69, of Spring Hill, Fla., died Sunday,
April 6, 2003, at Oak Hill Hospital.
She was born Aug. 11, 1933, in Ulysses, Pa., the daughter of Milo and Ida
(Dutton) Watson. She had lived in the Spring Hill area for the past 23 years.
She was of the Free Methodist faith.
She is survived by two sons, David Erickson of Conneaut, and Dennis Erickson of
Tampa, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Linda
Erickson and Laura McKinzie, both of Spring Hill, Sherry Finlaw of Brooksville,
Fla., and Candee Berry of Tampa; two brothers, Gerald Watson of St. Petersburg,
Fla., and John W. Watson of Ohio.
Mrs. Wolfe will be cremated, and her ashes will be buried in Kingsville
Cemetery, North Kingsville, at the convenience of the family.

DENMARK TOWNSHIP - Edwin Noel Benson, 76, of Stanhope Kelloggsville Rd., died
Thursday afternoon, Nov. 14, 2002, while cutting wood at his farm.
Mr. Benson was born February 20, 1926 in Conneaut, the son of Julius M. and
Florence (Evans) Benson and had been a lifelong resident of Denmark Township.
At age five, Mr. Benson began school early to make the 13th child, so as to keep
the Turnpike School House, a one room school house, open. Mr. Benson graduated
from Jefferson High School, class of 1943.
He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, from Sept. 1945 to
May 1948. After training, he was Clerk General in Germany, providing supplies to
troops there.
Mr. Benson was a self employed building contractor and carpenter, enjoyed
farming and also was employed by the Ashtabula Box Co.
Mr. Benson began community service by becoming a Denmark Township Trustee in
1972. He was a Democratic Township Committeeman, a member and past master of
Pierpont Relief Lodge 284 F&AM and active in the American Legion Post 691 of
Pierpont, N.R.A., Farm Bureau and Farmers Union.
Survivors include his wife Ann (Britton) whom he married May 31, 1953 in
Andover; two daughters, Jean Thompson of Denmark Township and Susan Benson of
Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Kevin Benson of Rockville, Md. and Brad Benson of
Denmark Township; ten grandchildren, Justin, Adam and Zachary Thompson, Kurt and
Jason West, Kathryn and Juliana Benson and Bethany and Clarisa Benson; four
brothers, Alan Benson of Hotchkiss, Colo., Robert Benson of Pierpont Township,
Frank Benson of Geneva, Ill. and Jack Benson of Silver Spring, Md. and one

Mr. Benson was preceded in death by his parents.

Daniel Anthony Grubke
MONROE TOWNSHIP - Daniel Anthony Grubke, 74, of Monroe Center, died Monday,
Aug. 12, 2002, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 17, 1927, in Kingsville, the son of Anthony and Theresa (Basinski)
Grubke.
A Korean War veteran, he worked for the Nickel Plate, Norfolk and Western and
Norfolk Southern railroads for 41 years, retiring in 1987 as a crane operator.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed riding his golf cart with his dogs Teddy and
Toby. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their
activities.
Survivors include his wife, the former Nora M. Simons, to whom he had been
married 49 years; a son, James Grubke of Monroe; a daughter, Sara Kreisher of
Monroe; four sisters, Rose Williams and Viola Copeck, both of Conneaut, Frances
Reydak of Kingsville, and Amelia Brown of East Springfield, Pa.; and four
grandchildren, Hattie and Sharon Grubke, and Kara and Riley Kreisher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ted, Ed and Joe Grubke; three

Carrie (Cook) Childers.
A Monroe Township resident for the past 44 years, he retired from True Temper in
1983 and was a member of the Conneaut Church of God.
He liked horses, was a member of the Ashtabula County Wagon Train Club, and
enjoyed logging with horses. He also enjoyed woodworking, being with his family,
and providing transportation for his Amish neighbors.
Survivors include his wife, Carol (Foster); a daughter, April M. Childers of
Conneaut; a son, John J. Childers of Saegertown, Pa.; a grandchild, Dakota S.
Childers, also of Saegertown; a sister, Thelma G. Coffman of Ashtabula; and a

Thursday evening, April 17, 2003, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa., where she

Born on July 15, 1921, in Cleveland, a daughter of John P. and Ella (Yuhas)
Gates.
An area resident since 1970, she moved to Monroe Township with her husband from
Ashtabula.
Mrs. Uhrich was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Albion, Pa., and
volunteered at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. She was a trained vocalist and
enjoyed singing, music and dancing.
Survivors include her son Arvin and his wife Connie Uhrich, of Apple Valley,
Calif.; her sister, Harriet and her husband Willis Trumble of Fremont, Ohio; one
niece, Holly Shippy; one nephew, Wayne Trumble; and a great-niece and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin on March 10, 2003;
and two brothers, Ralph and Arnold Gates.

CONNEAUT — Eunice M. Weaver, 87, of Hatches Corner Road, died Sunday,
April 13, 2003, at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
Born in Conneaut on December 24, 1915, the daughter of Albert Johnston and Inez
Brown. She had lived in Conneaut all her life.
Mrs. Weaver was a member of the State Line United Methodist Church. She was a
homemaker, enjoyed bingo and the out-of-doors, especially hunting, and her
family.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Reger, of Missouri City, Texas, and
Harriet Thomas of Florida; four grandchildren, Tammy Ellingson, Danny Thomas,
Scott Thomas, and Barbara Gorham; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Weaver;
son-in-law, Charles Thomas; three brothers, Kenneth, John and Harold Johnston;
and three sisters, Irene Carter, Freeda Hammond and Inez Moses.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 12 noon, at the Thompson-Smith Funeral

Dorothy M. Williams
MONROE TOWNSHIP – Dorothy M. Williams, 83, of Hilldom Road, Monroe
Township, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born January 24, 1920, in Blackwater, Va., a daughter of Lewis and Rosa
(Mullins) Alder. She was a resident of Monroe Township for the past 20 years,
having relocated from Cleveland. While in Cleveland, she was employed as an
assistant administrator for Valley Springs Nursing Home.
During her eight-month battle with terminal cancer, she was featured in a Star
Beacon article by Carl E. Feather, which described her Appalachian roots and the
culture of her period in time. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, canning, gardening,
nurturing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be
lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her kind, gentle and loving
nature. She was the guiding light of her family, and her courage and dignity in
the face of her overwhelming illness set an example for us all.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Carver D. Williams, whom she married
June 14, 1942; two sons, David C. and his wife, Wanda, of North Ridgeville,
Ohio, and Lewis A. and his wife, Danese, of Willoughby Hills, Ohio; one brother,
Cass Alder of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; six grandchildren, David A. Williams and wife,
Rhonda, Michelle Connolly and husband, Patrick, Jason Williams and Becky,
Melissa Williams and Matt, Amanda and Gayle Williams; and two
great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Connolly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her granddaughter Miranda; and a
sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Runyan.
Funeral services will be on Friday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at the Marcy Funeral

CONNEAUT - Margaret L. Tuttle, 88, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the
UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 18, 1915, in Ashtabula, the daughter of Walter and Susie
(Calloway) Mullen.
A Conneaut resident since childhood, she was a 1933 graduate of Conneaut High
School and received her diploma of elementary education in 1936 from Miami
University.
She began her teaching career in a one-room school in Monroe Township. She
retired from Chestnut Elementary School in 1974 after teaching 25 years in the
Conneaut Area School System.
Mrs. Tuttle was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting. She also was an
accomplished artist and specialized in painting landscapes.
Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Hoagland of Conneaut; a son, Larry, also
of Conneaut; four grandchildren, Heather Newton, JoAnn Hoagland, Tammy Mann and
Amy Hahn; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Gordon M. Tuttle, who
died Aug. 16, 1998.

CONNEAUT - Theodore L. Evans, 65, of Conneaut, died early Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002,
at the Cleveland Clinic.
Mr. Evans was born Aug. 2, 1937, in Ashtabula, the son of Versal and Georgia
(Powers) Evans. He attended Ashtabula High School and later entered the U.S. Air
Force, serving from 1955 until 1963. Mr. Evans later worked for Molded Fiber
Glass Co. in Ashtabula as a tooler. He also worked for the former Eighmy Corp.
in Conneaut as a machinist. He retired from the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock
Company in 1988 after working several years as a machinist.
Mr. Evans was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church. He enjoyed collecting
antiques, including military antiques, fishing, playing golf, riding his
motorcycle and traveling to casinos. He loved spending time with his family,
including his grandchildren, who considered him their hero.
Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Evans.
He is survived by his wife, the former Concetta (Connie) Morano, whom he married
Sept. 24, 1955, at St. Frances Cabrini; three sons, Theodore L. Jr., of
Jacksonville, N.C., Michael L. and Anthony L., both of Conneaut; two daughters,
Victoria Sharp and Nancy Henson, both of Conneaut; a brother, Thomas Evans of
Dorset; two sisters, Janice Headley of North Kingsville and Carolee Morris of
Michigan; eight grandchildren, Ginny, Zachary and Alyssa Evans, Lillian and
Pearl Sharp, and Emily, Olivia and Jasmine Henson.
A Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St.
Frances Cabrini Catholic Church with the Rev. Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial
will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.

CONNEAUT - Beverly J. Voytek, 58, of Pryately Boulevard, died Monday,
Nov. 11, 2002, at The Villa at the Lake following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Voytek was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Reynolds-ville, Pa., a daughter of the
late Calvin and Stella (Dziedzic) Horm.
She had been a Conneaut resident since 1967.
A graduate of Reynoldsville High School, she earned her bachelor of music degree
from Youngstown State University and her master's of music degree from Converse
University.
She had been employed in the music departments of the Conneaut Area City
Schools and St. Frances Cabrini School before retiring in 1998. She also gave
private lessons in piano and French horn.
A member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, Mrs. Voytek served as a reader and
cantor at one point. She was active in the Conneaut community as the
director of the First United Methodist Church choir; a member of the Conneaut
Community Center for the Arts and its director for five years; and founder and
director of the Center's Kilpi Chorus.
Mrs. Voytek was also a member of the former MacDowell Music Club and director of
the club's MacDowell Ensemble; performed in the French horn sections of the
Ashtabula Symphonic Band and the W.D. Packard Band, of Warren; and was a member
of the Bridge Club and the United Federation of Musicians #108.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed arts and crafts, reading, walking, and
supporting her husband and sons in their music endeavors.
Survivors include her husband, George V. Voytek, whom she married June 8, 1968;
three sons, Michael of Centerville, Joel of Valley View, and Daniel of Bay
Village; two grandchildren, Mara and Makenna Voytek; three sisters, Candy Horm
of Erie, Marilyn Brown of Ashtabula, and Sylvia McMahan of Iva, S.C.; and two
brothers, Michael Horm of Anderson, S.C., and Calvin Horm of Falls Creek, Pa.
Mrs. Voytek was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sherry.
A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Frances Cabrini Church,
744 Mill St., Conneaut. The Rev. Raymond Thomas, pastor of St. Frances
Cabrini at St. Mary churches, will officiate.

CONNEAUT - James W. Robison, 76, of Buffalo Street, died Tuesday, Nov.
26, 2002, at Hamot Medical Center.
Mr. Robison was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Conneaut, the son of Merle and
Ellen (Niemla) Robison, and graduated from Fairview High School in 1945. After
serving in the United States Army Air Corps at Randolph Field, Texas, Mr.
Robison worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He then joined the Conneaut
Telephone Co., retiring as commercial manager in 1989. He served on the Board of
Directors for the telephone company until his death and was a member of the Elks
Lodge and the American Legion. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's and St.
Frances Cabrini Churches and sang in St. Mary choir for more than 17 years.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, James thoroughly
enjoyed his retirement years with his family and close friends. He loved Italian
food and good song; enjoyed traveling, golf, going for walks with his wife and
cultivating his tomato plants. He was exceptionally fair, was a generous and
simple man, and will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Janis (Joslin) Robison; a sister, Betty
J. Robison, of Conneaut; four sons, James F. Robison of Conneaut,
John T. (Eileen) Robison of Barre, Vt., Joseph L. (Becky) Robison of Conneaut,
Jerome A. (Natalie) Robison of Hilliard; and two daughters, Julia A. Notte and
Jennifer L. (Douglas) Cleveland, both of Conneaut. Grandchildren include
Kelly (Robison) Cicon, Kerry (Robison) White, James M. Robison, Allison and
Lyndsey Robison, Alisa and Mindy Notte, Melanie and Chad Robison, Nicole and
Lauren Robison, Alex Roseberry, Connor and Cooper Cleveland; seven
great-grandchildren; Colin, Conor and Caden Cicon, Morgan and Whitney White,
James and Ryan Robison and an aunt, Esther Reinke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Howard Pat Robison, and
great-grandson, Cody James Robison.

CONNEAUT - Gloria Ann Arcaro, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002.
Born May 29, 1931, in Ashtabula, she was the daughter of Samuel and Anna (Peterangelo)
Zappa.
A 1948 Ashtabula High School graduate, she went to work at the Ashtabula
Telephone Co. She married Fiory (Fee) Arcaro on Sept. 24, 1955, at Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Church, Ashtabula.
She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, Conneaut; Conneaut TOPS Club OH
971 for many years; and was a former TOPS queen.
She also enjoyed softball and fast-pitch games at Lakeview Park and was a fan of
the Cleveland Indians and Browns for many years.
She enjoyed line dancing, bingo, craft shopping and spending time with her
friends, family and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna McLaughlin of North Kingsville; a son, David
of Conneaut; a sister, Jean May of Ashtabula; and two grandchildren, Brianna and
Connor A. McLaughlin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1995; and a sister,

CONNEAUT - John W. "Jack" Sanford, 79, former Conneaut police
chief, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at his home on Buffalo Street.
He was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Conneaut, the son of Phil and Dorothy (Henesey)
Sanford. He resided in Conneaut his entire life.
Mr. Sanford began his career with the Conneaut Fire Department and became
a patrolman with the Conneaut Police Department in 1950. He was appointed
chief at the age of 29 in 1954, and he later retired after 35 years of service.
After his retirement from the police department, he was employed by the Port
Authority as a boat ramp attendant.
Mr. Sanford was a World War II veteran, serving as a turret gunner on B-25
bombers in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church, the former Veterans of Foreign Wars of
Conneaut, the Fraternal Order of Police and Prisoner of War Association. In
his leisure time, he enjoyed motorcycling, weight lifting, walking on the beach
and following his children and grandchildren in their sporting events.
Survivors include daughters Barbara Sanford of Charlottesville, Va. and Becky
Soller of Conneaut; sons Joseph of Union City and Mike, Daniel and Jeff
Sanford, all of Conneaut; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
half-sisters Jackie Walsh of Florida and Sandy Best, Patricia Wadsworth, Donna
Fuller and Carol Stump, all of Conneaut; and half brothers Pete Sanford
of California and Harland Sanford of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia, brother Charles "Ed"

CONNEAUT — Marjorie J. Sedmak, 65, of Keefus Road, died Friday, Dec.
6, 2002, at the Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following a brief
illness. She was born Dec. 13, 1936 in Conneaut, a daughter of Ben and
Rose (Kraus) Sedmak.
She attended Rowe High School, was employed as head cook at the Ashtabula County
Nursing Home for 30 years and had also worked at one time for the former Astatic
Corp.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed crocheting and being
with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed baking,
especially cookies for the holidays, weddings and festivities.
Survivors include two sisters; Louise Poprocky of Conneaut and Pauline
Monda of Ashtabula; two brothers, Frank and Alex Sedmak of Conneaut.

Mr. Dascoli graduated from Ashtabula High School and was a veteran of the U.S.
Army, serving during World War II.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Dascoli worked for the former Penny Furniture Company, Brown Furniture and
Fortune Wholesale.

CONNEAUT - Charles A. Harmich, 83, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at
his home following a five-month illness. He was born May 13, 1919, in
Youngstown, a son of Charles and Mary (Wanca) Harmich.
Mr. Harmich moved to Conneaut in 1946 with the Astatic Corp., where he
was employed in the warehouse and stockroom for 26 years. He then worked for SCM
in Ashtabula, as a supervisor, for 16 years, until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the group of old-timers from the
Astatic. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends every day, playing the piano,
working outdoors, and spending times with his family and his dog, Chico.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred "Maizie" (Kain) Harmich, whom he married
April 29, 1944; his son, John J., of Erie, Pa.; four grandchildren, Kathryn
Bliley, Michelle Cochran, Michael J. Harmich, and Melissa Fetzner; and 14
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John J., in World War

CONNEAUT - Harold R. "Dutch" Wiley, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at
Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.
Mr. Wiley was born July 7, 1924, in Cranesville, Pa., the son of Eugene and
Hazel (Neckerauer) Wiley.
He was a 1942 Rowe graduate. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1943 and was
honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Wiley served his country in the 379th Bomb Group, 526th squadron, flying
B-17s. He was a "tailgunner" on many missions over Germany.
He then worked at the Conneaut General Electric Co. plant as a tool
setter and retired in 1986 after 37 years of service.
He was a member of American Legion Cowle Post 151 and the Conneaut Moose
Lodge. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Alice T. Klepek, whom he married Sept. 30, 1950;
three daughters, Suzanne Peglow of Indianapolis, Alyson Wiley of Akron, and
Peggy Merlene of Stow; five grandchildren, Amanda and Joseph Peglow, and
Anthony, Meg and Madison Merlene.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert Wiley.

(Matthews) Ahlstrom.
He was a graduate of Dickinson University.
Mr. Ahlstrom was employed with Ashta Chemicals in Ashtabula for almost 30
years, until his retirement because of ill health.
He enjoyed the Cleveland Browns and cared about the environment, animal rights
and spending time with his grandchildren.

CONNEAUT - Michael David Isbrandt Jr., 20, of Orange Street, died Friday, Aug.
16, 2002, in an automobile crash.
He was born Aug.. 31, 1981, in Conneaut, the son of Michael David and
Donna (Miller) Isbrandt.
He attended Conneaut High School, where he played football and wrestled for the
Spartans. He was a free spirit who enjoyed golf and spending time with family
and friends.
Survivors include his father of Conneaut and mother of Madison; paternal
grandfather, William Isbrandt of Ashtabula; maternal grandparents, Joseph and
Virginia Miller of Ashtabula; and four sisters, Emily Isbrandt of Madison, and

28, 2002, at her home following a year's illness.
Born March 5, 1943, in Conneaut, she was a daughter of Iran (Pudge) J. and Helen
K. Floro. She married Robert R. Dello on March 31, 1973.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, she was a 1961 Conneaut High School graduate and
was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar
Guild, the visitation team and the Women's Circle. She enjoyed her family,
especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Susan K. Reinke of Conneaut,
Elizbeth A. Lehtonen of Lawton, Okla., and Patricia A. Rhoads of Conneaut; two
sons, Ronald J. Spaller of Madison and Donald B. Spaller of Ravenna; three

CONNEAUT - Harriet L. Ross, 88, of Main Street, died at the home of
her niece Monday, Nov. 4, 2002.
She was born July 23, 1914, in Buffalo, N.Y. to Dr. Carl W. and Louise
(Martindale) Dewey. She was a lifelong Conneaut resident.
Mrs. Ross worked for the U.S. Postal Service 10 years, as well as 18 years at
Conneaut Savings and Loan.
She was a 1932 graduate of Conneaut High School and a member of the
United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Ross was a 53-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Squad where she
served as president and county president as well as a 52-year member of the Rose
Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star 22.
In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family.
Survivors include nieces Susan Urshel, Fran Tessmer, Kay Greenfield, Jean Wilson
and Linda Phares; nephews Bob Ross, Dick Gehr, Bob Wright, James Wright and Gary
Coccittio; and sisters-in-law Midge Wright and Jean Vest.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, sister Helen Dewey
and brother Raymond.

CONNEAUT - Clarence I. Seline, 86, of Lake Road, Conneaut, died
Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1916, in Clifford, Wis., the son of William I. and Hulda S.
(Ekman) Seline. He lived in Conneaut for 25 years and Willoughby Hills
for 40 years.
After retirement, he relocated to Inverness, Fla., and recently had moved back
to Conneaut.
A 1934 graduate of Conneaut High School, he was a painting contractor in
the Cleveland area, and owned and operated the Seline Painting Company for 35
years.
He was a life member of the BPOE 256; a life member of the Fraternal Order of
Eagles in Willoughby and a member of the FOE in Inverness; a member of the Loyal
Order of Moose 472 in Conneaut; a life member and past master of Pierpont
Relief Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons 284; and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was
also a life member of the Painters and Allied Trade Union.
He and his wife, Marjorie, enjoyed visiting casinos during their later years.
Survivors include a brother, Eugene W. Seline of Conneaut; and a friend
and care giver, Margaret Lowery of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Judith
Pelow; and a sister, Irene Sorenson.

KINGSVILLE- Elizabeth A. Humphrey, 80, of Kingsville died, Friday, Sept. 20,
2002, at home.
She was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Cleveland, to Loren Cecil and Anna (Andrejkovics)
Stewart.
She graduated from North Kingsville High School in 1939. She married Howard E.
Humphrey, Sept. 15, 1946. She worked most of her adult live as a bookkeeper for
the family service station and wrecker business.
Mrs. Humphrey was a member of the Kellogsville United Methodist Church. She
loved taking care of her family.
Survivors include two sons, Nelson of Homosassa Springs, Fla., Howard Jr. of
Kingsville; four daughters, Zoanna Bartone of Ashtabula, Christine Hudson of

CONNEAUT - John Allen Baldwin Jr., 15, of Craytor Avenue in Conneaut,
died Sunday, Sept. 15, in Conneaut.
He was born Nov. 3, 1986, in Big Spring, Texas, the son of John Sr. and Ann (Parmely)

A freshman at Conneaut High School, he enjoyed riding four-wheelers, spending
time with family and friends, drawing pictures and playing on the computer. He
also enjoyed baseball and softball, and earned an award for the Most Improved
Attitude for the 2002 Adolescent Softball League. He also participated in the
LARC Youth Co-Ed Softball team for 2002.
He earned several awards throughout his school years.
Survivors include his parents, of Conneaut; and a brother, Larry Baldwin,
at home.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Richard and Naomi
Baldwin; and maternal grandfather, Franklin Parmely.
Service is 7 p.m. Friday at Amboy United Methodist Church, 554 W. Main Road,
Conneaut. The Rev. Gina Kim of the church will officiate, assisted by the Rev.
Don Hammer of the First Assembly of God in Ashtabula.

Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002.
She was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Cleveland, a daughter of Constantine and Mary
Edikiz.
She was a homemaker. She lived in Geneva before moving to Ashtabula six years
ago. She enjoyed reading and cooking.
Survivors include her nephew, George Kerutis of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two
great-nephews, William Kerutis of North Kingsville, and Brian Kerutis of Big
Fork, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Michael Edikiz; and a
sister, Anna Kerutis.

PAINESVILLE - Leland D. (Lee) Gochneaur, 77, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in
Brecksville.
Mr. Gochneaur was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Conneaut, the son of Clifford
and Effie (Crawford) Gochneaur. He also lived in New Castle, Pa.
He was a member of New Castle Eagles Club and a local carpenters' union.
He was employed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as a fireman. He retired in
1989.
Mr. Gochneaur was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Cleo (Phillips) Gochneaur of Painesville; two sons,
Gary and Glenn, both of Painesville; two daughters, Judy Hehr, also of
Painesville, and Doris J. Rogal of North Olmstead; a sister, Janice Bradley of
Brookfield; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Vernon, Clifford Jr.,
Cecil and Keith; and a sister, Gail Pacquette.

GENEVA - Kenneth Louis Klasen, 78, of Cromwell Street, died Monday, Nov. 18,
2002, at Rae-Ann Geneva.
He was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Madison, the son of Henry and Mildred (Benjamin)
Klasen. He married Dorothy Rowan April 19, 1947.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and three
Bronze Stars after landing on Omaha Beach and being wounded near Paris.
Mr. Klasen owned and operated Ken's Water Service 30 years and retired from
Sanborn Wire in 1986. He previously worked as a security guard for Diamond
Shamrock Corporation in Fairport Harbor, for 15 years.
He enjoyed antiques, especially antique tractors. He enjoyed collecting vintage
materials and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; sons David Klasen of Geneva and Timothy Klasen of
Saybrook; daughters Marlane Burgett of Saybrook and Joanne Cunningham of
Jefferson; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother Paul Klasen of
Rosebury, Ore.; and sister Ruth Brunson of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by brothers Richard and Lynn Klasen, sister Dorothy
Chapel and his parents.

POLAND - Roy W. Wilson, 68, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002.
He was born Feb. 13, 1934, in Youngstown, to Roy and Edith (McCutcheon) Wilson.
Mr. Wilson graduated from Poland Seminary High School, where he played
basketball and football. He marred Sondra Sivey in 1953.
He was self-employed in the carpet industry for 35 years.
Mr. Wilson was a church member for more than 40 years and served as a member of
the general board and as a trustee. He was also a member of the Conneaut
Fish and Game Club. He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Glenn Wilson of Normal, Ill., Wayne
Wilson of Lisbon, and Gregg Wilson of Youngstown; a daughter, Bonny Lewis of Las
Vegas; and grandchildren Quinn and Lydia Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Robert Nelson.

11, 2002, at her son David's home in Geneva.
She was born May 12, 1932 in Ashtabula, the daughter of George E. and Aleen
(Tilton) Swanson and had been a lifelong Ashtabula County resident.
Prior to her retirement, she along with her sister Margaret, owned and operated
North Coast Mini Mart in North Kingsville for nine years and previously worked
19 years at Yoder Brothers Nursery.
Mrs. Downie was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashtabula and was also
active in the Ashtabula Eagles Ladies Auxiliary F.O.E. 1463 and the Quilter's
Guild.
She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and an accomplished painter, she enjoyed
geneology, gardening, traveling, baking apple pies and spending time with her
grandchildren.
Survivors include her mother, Aleen Swanson of Ashtabula; seven children, Beckie
A. Bartel of Mayfield Heights, Joe H. Downie II of Ashtabula, Sally C. Condra of

ASHTABULA - Donald Wilson Frick Sr., 55, died Sunday, April 13, 2003,
at his home.
Born January 2, 1948, in Conneaut, he was the son of Harold and Dorothy (Suojanen)
Frick.
In 2001 he married Janis (Deurlein) Frick on October 31 in Ashtabula.
He was a Juvenile Probation Officer/Trainer for Ashtabula County for 23 years. A
graduate of Ashtabula High School in 1966, he then went on to Kent State
University and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was in the United
States Navy, serving in Vietnam.
Mr. Frick enjoyed playing golf, and he loved helping the young people of
Ashtabula County.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald Wilson Frick Jr., of Minot Air
Force Base, N.D., and Gerald Joseph Frick, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; two sisters,
Nancy (Red) Evix and Sue (James) Atzemis of Ashtabula; two brothers, Joseph
(Tracie) M. of Conneaut and Russell Frick of Ashtabula; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

HARLINGEN, Texas - Charles D. Williams, 84, formerly of Conneaut, died
Friday, March 28, 2003, at Valley Baptist Memorial Hospital in Texas. He was
born Sept. 3, 1918 in Conneaut, the son of Joseph and Mary Williams. Mr.
Williams was a graduate of Conneaut High School in 1937. He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II and held the rank of sergeant and was in the
military police.
Mr. Williams lived in Matteson, Ill., for years where he worked as a
self-employed painter, decorator and contractor.
In recent years he spent his summers in Conneaut with his wife, Madeline.
Mr. Williams enjoyed playing golf and watching sports and working in his yard.
Survivors include his wife, whom he had been married for 60 years; three
sisters, Sue Vandetti of Dunkirk, N.Y., Lucy Hultgren of Erie, Pa. and Katherine
Ille of Conneaut; and a brother, Paul of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers, Tony, John, Rocco,
James and Nick Williams. Cremation took place in Harlingen, Texas. A memorial
service will take place at a later date in Conneaut.

Survivors include his father, of Mentor; his wife, Vera (Bradley) Clute; three

CONNEAUT— Wallace G. Greenlee, 79, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his
home in New Port Richey, Fla. He was born May 27, 1923, in Youngstown, the son
of Perry (Dee) and Merl Greenlee.
A Conneaut resident for many years, he moved to Florida 13 years ago. He
was a retired quality control worker at Linde Wire, Ashtabula. He also worked at
the Astatic Corp. in Conneaut for several years.
Mr. Greenlee was an U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean
War.
He was a member of the Cranesville First Methodist Church and belonged to the
American Legion and the Loyal Order of the Moose.
A longtime member of the Conneaut Boat Club, Wally enjoyed spending time
on Lake Erie, and took great pleasure in boating trips up and down the Great
Lakes, as well as spending time with good friends at the boathouse.
He was a member of the Power Squadron for many years. His other interests
included reading, and stamp and coin collecting.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Caroline (Swanson) Greenlee; two sons,
David and Daniel, both of New Port Richey; one daughter, Dana Williams, of
Beaver Center, Pa.; his brother, Daniel of Newberry Springs, Calif.; seven
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

CONCORD TOWNSHIP - William A. Pierce, 61, died Saturday Nov. 9, 2002, at
LakeWest Hospital in Willoughby after a two-year battle with ALS.
He was born Dec. 11, 1940, in Middlebourne, W.Va., the son of Robert A. and B.
Irene Pierce.
An educator, he served as associate principal at Mentor High School in the 1970s
and 1980s and West Geauga High School principal from 1982 until his retirement
in 1995.
He loved music and had an impressive tenor voice. His major interests were
Habitat for Humanity, the Indians on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota,
Painesville Township Band, vocal music and reading historical biographies.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, the former Kathy Richards, formerly of
Conneaut; a daughter, Kaari Pierce of Concord; a son, Robert Pierce of
Concord; and sisters Elizabeth Stuart of St. Mary's, W.Va., Sara Lilly of
Hurricane, W.Va. and Patricia Pierce of Chicago.

Fla. area from Conneaut 30 years ago.
Mrs. Albertone worked as a waitress at the Oyster Bar. She was also a volunteer
for the Salvation Army, sponsored children for Children's International and was
a member of San Antonio Catholic Church, Port Charlotte, Fla. She was a loving
mother, best friend and a "compagno divita."

She and her husband owned Hartstown Golf Course for 18 years, and operated Iron
City Window Cleaning Co. for 17 years.
She enjoyed cooking, traveling, shopping and collecting Beanie Babies.

UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.
He was born April 5, 1914, in Portage County, the son of Merton J. and Ida May
(Beal) Vaughn.
A Conneaut resident the past two years, he retired as a supervisor from
Goodyear Aerospace in 1974. He was a member of Adoniram-Joppa Lodge 517 Free and
Accepted Masons.
He enjoyed walking, tinkering with cars, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, the former Helen L. Bennington, whom he married Oct.
6, 1934; a son, Kenneth H. of Conneaut; two grandchildren, Rachael Irish

Brooksville.

PLEASANT BEND - Cloyd English, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at
home.
He was born Feb. 27, 1917, the son of Roy and Minnie English.
Mr. English hauled milk for many years before going into carpentry work,
remodeling and building homes. He retired in 1980.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Pleasant Bend.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Weller of Continental, and Sharon Kohart of
Angola, Ind.; three brothers, Bernard of Oakwood, Donald of Van Wert, and Gerald
of Conneaut; a sister, Evelyn Butler of Conneaut; four grandchildren, and

NORTH SPRINGFIELD, Pa. - Eleanor H. Turner, 94, of Maple Drive, died
Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at The Villa on the Lake, Conneaut.
She was born Feb. 20, 1908, in Stateline, N.Y., to Harley and Willhellmina
(Oaks) Adams. She graduated from the Academy High School, in Erie, in 1927. She
married Harold W. Turner June 29, 1929.
Mrs. Turner worked at the Boston Store in Erie years ago. Her favorite job was
working at the Peggy Gray Candy and Gift Shop in West Springfield, Pa., selling
candy and gifts for more than 20 years.
She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Erie and a past Grand Noble
for the Edris Dale Rebeckah Lodge. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry and
playing Chinese checkers.
Survivors include sons Dale Turner of East Springfield, Pa., Alan Turner of
Pierpont, Lane Turner of Geneva, David Turner of West Springfield, Glenn Turner
of Conneaut, Ralph Turner and Kent Turner, both of North Springfield;

grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

William Capela
MURPHY, N.C. - William (Bill) Capela, 78, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, in
a Murphy, N.C., health care facility.
A former Conneaut resident, he was the son of Joseph and Louise Capela.
Mr. Capela had lived in Florida before moving to North Carolina in 1980.
He had worked as a foreman for the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, retiring in
1960.
He was a member of St. William Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Wanamaker Capela; two sisters, Jean
and Florence Capela, both of Conneaut; and a brother, Richard of North
Kingsville.
Mr. Capela was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers and four
sisters.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 7 at St. William Church, with the Rev. George
Kloster officiating.

ASHTABULA - Ronald Watts, 52, of Ashtabula died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the
Cleveland Clinic.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Brenda Watts in 1965.
Services will be 11 a.m., Monday at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave.,
Ashtabula, with the Rev. Kenneth Roberts, pastor of the Pentecostal Church of
God officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Plymouth Township.

CONNEAUT - Lucille L. (Toot) Hedglin, 79, of West Main Road, died
Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Conneaut.
Mrs. Hedglin was born March 22, 1923, in Franklin, Pa., a daughter of the late
Charles and Pearl A. (Deeter) Norris.
A Conneaut resident since 1968, she was a member of the Conneaut
First Assembly of God. She traveled throughout the United States with her
evangelist husband, sharing in his ministry for 57 years with the Church of God.
He also served as pastor of the Church of God in Nectarine, Pa., and overseer of
the entire Church of GodHouse of Prayer in Markleysburg, Pa.
She enjoyed raising roses and was known for her cooking and pie baking.
Survivors include her daughter, Sonja Penniman of Conneaut; her brother,
Charles (Bud) Norris of Grove City, Pa.; two grandchildren, Michele Rapose of
Conneaut, and Scott Penniman of North Kingsville; and four
great-grandchildren, Amber and Devin Rapose, and Nicholas and Zachary Penniman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, the Rev. Evan Hedglin, in
1995; five sisters, Jennie Norris, Margaret Surrena, Grace McFadden, Mae Surrena
and Pearl Norris; and three brothers, Harold, Richard and Gerald Norris.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of God in Barkeyville, Pa., with the
Rev. Fred Goldine officiating.
Burial will be in Clintonville Methodist Cemetery in Clintonville Boro, Pa.
At Mrs. Hedglin's request, there will be no calling hours.

PIERPONT TOWNSHIP - Andrew J. Janowich, 98, formerly of Conneaut, died
Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Pleasant Lake Villa in Parma.
He and his wife, Helen (Zaturski), moved to Pierpont from Parma after he retired
from Ford Motor Co.
He loved the country and was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing,
especially in Canada.
Survivors include his daughter, Gerry Franczak of Parma; a stepson, Dick Sanzo;
four grandchildren, Tim and Bob Franczak, Ellen Lewis and Carol Fallon; seven
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Barbena.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Mary Scullion; and four
brothers, John, Joseph, Steve and William Janowich.
Prayer service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Golubski Funeral Home, 5986 Ridge Road,
Parma, followed by a Funeral Mass, 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Charles Borromeo
Church, 5839 Ridge Road, Parma.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Charles B. Megyesi, 77, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002.
A longtime resident of Redwood City, Mr. Megyesi was born Nov. 21, 1924, in
Conneaut, the son of John and Mary (Szabo) Megyesi.
A retired Navy lieutenant, he graduated from Conneaut High School in
1942. He enjoyed traveling, chess and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Gizella Megyesi; two daughters, Virginia Haddad and
Charlene Saltzer; a stepdaughter, Susie; a stepson, George; five grandchildren;
two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Thompson, of
Conneaut; and a brother, John Megyesi, also of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings, Elizabeth Tantari, Helen
Simon, Richard Megyesi and a sister, in infancy.
A service was held on Monday at the Hungarian Reform Church in Redwood City.

ASHTABULA - Ronald Watts, 52, of Ashtabula died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at

Frank S. Simons
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico - Frank Stanton Simons Jr., 58, of
Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, died at his brother's home in Superior,
Colo., on Aug. 29, 2002.
He was born March 17, 1944, in Santiago, Cuba, the son of Frank S. Simons Sr.
and Mary (Edwards) Simons, and later lived in Mexico and Peru before moving to
Colorado at age 13.
He was a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder and The George
Washington University Law School in Washington.
He worked as an attorney in Colorado Springs for many years, serving as chief
deputy public defender and also working in private practice.
He was appointed and served as a member of the 4th Judicial District Nominating
Commission for five years.
He retired in 1998 and moved to Mexico, where he enjoyed traveling, scuba
diving, backpacking and people.
Survivors include his mother, Mary, of Lakewood, Colo.; his wife, the former
Karen Bittner, of Playa del Carmen, Mexico; two brothers, John Simons of
Superior, Colo., and Andrew Simons of Seattle; his maternal grandmother, Anna
Edwards, of Alhambra, Calif.; his father- and mother-in-law, Sulo and Leah
Kleimo of Conneaut; and two sisters-in-law, Susan Esposito of Ashtabula,
and Joan Richards of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Respecting his wishes, no formal funeral services were held. A gathering to
celebrate his life will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo.

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - Hannah Quinn Palo, 68, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002
at her home. Born June 27, 1934 in Conneaut, daughter of George and
Veronica (Cantlin) Dusenbury.
She married Maurice "Skip" Palo Aug. 10, 1957. A devoted mother and grandmother,
she gave an abundance of love and kindness to others.
Mrs. Palo also lived in Hudson, Ohio, Kansas City, Mo. and Denver, Colo.
She graduated from Conneaut High School in 1952 and from St. Mary's
College in South Bend, Ind. in 1956.
She was past president of the Women's Council in California at St. Kilians
Church.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Catherine Peterson of San Clemente,
Calif.; a son, Micheal Palo of Mission Viejo, Calif. and seven grandchildren.
Service is Wednesday, at St. Kilian's Church in Mission Viejo, Calif. Burial
will be in Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest, Calif.

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Henry A. Barrante, 84, died Oct. 24, 2002, of a heart
attack.
He was born Feb. 28, 1918, in East Springfield, Pa., the son of James G. and
Marina Barrante.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, served in Europe and Korea, and retired as a
lieutenant colonel. Mr. Barrante was awarded many medals, including the Silver
Star.
He was a member of Camp Knox, Lodge Fort A.M. Guam, Scottish Rite bodies, Boumi
Shrine Temple and the Royal Order of Jesters. He served as commander of the
Legion of Honor and colonel of the units and director of the temple.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley (Mason) Barrante; a daughter,
Carolyn Washburn; a grandson, Sean Washburn of Utah; a granddaughter, Nicole
Dunn; twin great-grandsons; three sisters, Ann Filegar of Girard, Pa., Peggy
Imig Johnson of Lake City, Pa., and Joanda (JoAnn) B. Humalainen of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald; four brothers; and four
sisters.
He was buried with full military honors at London Park Cemetery in Catonsville,
Md. Singleton Funeral Home, of Glen Burnie, handled the arrangements.

KINGSVILLE - Robert C. Loftis, 77, of Kingsville died Thursday, Nov. 21,
2002, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born April 15, 1925, in Columbus, Miss., the son of William W. and
Virginia W. (Stevenson) Loftis.
He was a corporal in the U.S. Marines during World War II in the Pacific
theater. He then worked as a conductor for the New York Central Railroad for 39
years.
Mr. Loftis was a member of Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his two children, Linda McNutt of Ashtabula and Bruce Loftis
of Conneaut; four grandchildren, Nicole, Christopher, James and Andrew;
and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis (Corbett) Loftis, in
1987; two brothers, William and James; and a sister, Helen Perry.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday, at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road,
Ashtabula. Gordon Emerson, lay pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church,

Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at his home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 27, 1943, in Girard, Pa., to George E. and Dorothy (Kinney)
Moyer.
Mr. Moyer attended Northwestern High School in Albion, Pa. He lived in
California more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife Renee; sisters Marie Heinonen and Mildred Wade of
Conneaut and Virginia Marcy of Cherry Hill, Pa.; a brother, Frank Moyer of
Albion, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Betty (Waldo) Moyer; sisters
Georgia, Judy and Bonnie Moyer; and brother Robert.

PIERPONT — Leota L. Cork, 93, of Route 167, West Pierpont, died Thursday
evening, Nov. 21, 2002, at the Jefferson Geriatric and Rehabilitation Center in
Jefferson, where she had been a resident the past year.
She was born Dec. 6, 1908, in Linesville, Pa., the daughter of Raymond and
Mabelle (Corey) Shepard. She was a longtime Pierpont resident.
She worked at the Woolworth Company for 10 years and the P&J Variety Store for
25 years, before retiring in 1980. Both stores were located in Conneaut.
She was past president and lifetime member of the Ashtabula County Fireman’s
Auxiliary; past president and lifetime member of Pierpont Firebelles; served 39
years on the Pierpont Election Board; past president of Pierpont P.T.O.; site
coordinator for government food commodities and free clothing at the Pierpont
Presbyterian Church; involved in the reading program at the Pierpont grade
school; vice-president of the Fellowship Club; and a member of the Advisory
Board of Presidents’ Club of Andover Bank.
She attended Pierpont Presbyterian Church and in her early years, enjoyed
dancing and square dancing.
Survivors include two children, Jean Ensman of Dorset and Russell V. of
Pierpont; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence E., whom she married
Feb. 25, 1928, in Ripley, N.Y.; two sons, Lawrence and Howard Cork; two sisters
and a brother.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday, at Pierpont Presbyterian Church, 71 Route 7,
Pierpont. The Rev. Ed Diehl, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow

DADE CITY, Fla. — Dean W. Beckwith, 75, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at his
home. He was born Feb. 22, 1927 in Conneaut, a son of Ralph and Maude
(Barrett) Beckwith.
Mr. Beckwith was a member of the Civil Air Patrol while a student at Rowe High
School prior to his enlistment in 1944 in the U.S. Navy. During World War II he
served on a destroyer in the Pacific Theater and was a member of the Albion, Pa.
V.F.W. He owned and operated Dean Beckwith Feed & Supply in East Conneaut
in the early 50s. He worked in sales in automobiles, insurance and real estate
in Conneaut and Ashtabula. He worked as building inspector and served on
the North Kingsville Village Council. He last worked for Gleason Real Estate
before retiring to Florida in 1992.
Mr. Beckwith was a 32nd degree Mason and was very active in Masonic
organizations: Past Master Relief Lodge #284 of Pierpont, member of Conneaut
Chapter 76 Royal Arch Masons, Conneaut Council #40, Royal & Select Masons
of Ohio, Cache Commandry #27, Knights Templar, Noble in Zem Zem Shrine of Erie,
Pa., Rose Chapter #22 Order of Eastern Star. He had been awarded Holy Royal Arch
Knight Templar and Knights York Cross of Honor.
As a young man, he was a licensed pilot flying out of the North Kingsville air
strip. He loved music and played the trumpet, organ and guitar. He was a
handgun-shooting enthusiast having competed in many regional and national
championship matches. He was a member of the Amboy Rifle Club.
Mr. Beckwith was a member of the East Pasco Amateur Radio Society of Florida and
had been volunteering at the East Pasco Medical Center, Zephyrhills, Fla. He
enjoyed his flower gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Viola (Bishop) Beckwith, whom he married March 7,
1945 in Ripley, N.Y.; a son, David L. of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter, Janet M.
Lapinskas of Dade City, Fla.; a grandson, Sean D. of Conneaut; and a
sister, Doris House of Encinitas, Ca.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gertrude; and four brothers,
Harold, Floyd, Charles, and Carlyle.

LILY DALE, NY - Alfred M. (Ozzie) Osborne, of 8 Cleveland Ave., died Friday,
Nov. 22, 2002. Mr. Osborne was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Conneaut, the son
of Veda and Harry Osborne.
A retired glazier, Mr. Osborne was a member and past president of Local 482 of
Erie for many years. He was also a member of the Erie County Beagle Club. A
charter member of the First Spiritualist Church of Erie, he devoted much of his
time to the study and practice of healing and was a certified healer. A lover of
the outdoors, he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, boating and working with horses.
Mr. Osborne loved traveling and was particularly interested in exploring areas
of the country rich in Native American culture.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Kitty; one son, Ricky Osborne of Grand
Valley, Pa.; five daughters, Joanne Nadasi of Phoenix, Stasha Boltz of Liberty
Lake, Wash., Sherry Bainbridge of Cheektowaga, N.Y., Linda Smith of Conneaut,
and Shelia Medved of Girard, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Clara Bidel of San Diego;
two brothers, Mason Osborne of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Fred Osborne of Frederick,
Md.
Mr. Osborne was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harry and
Otis.

KINGSVILLE — Evelyn L. Kobernik, 83, of Creek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14,
2002, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. He was born in Conneaut, Dec.
12, 1919, the daughter of the late Carl and Flora Parker Montgomery.
She was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Kobernik was a licensed masseuse,
receiving her degree from Great Lakes College in Cleveland. She was a dedicated
assistant to her husband and son in their mechanotherapy practice in Conneaut.
She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in West Springfield,
Pa.
Survivors include her husband, Claude L. Sr., to whom she had been married for
the past 64 years, two daughters, Barbara Bartram of Ashtabula and Karen Dewey
of Roy, Utah; six grandchildren, Claude Kobernik III, Gail Loreth, Rhonda
Ludwick, Monica Folsom, Kristy Adams and Greg Dewey; nine great-grandchildren
and three sisters, Harriet Klumph of Ashtabula, Marjorie Fergus of Finley Lake,
N.Y and Elizabeth Tuttle of Cuyahoga Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Claude L. Jr., two
granddaughters, Julie Sandberg and Tracy Dewey; two brothers, Elmer and Robert
Montgomery; and three sisters, Hazel Rice, Eshter Battles and Viola Loomis.
It was the request of the deceased that her body be cremated and that
there be no service or calling hours.

PAYSON, Ariz. - Lora J. (Moross) Van Nortwick, 77, a former Conneaut
resident, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002.
She was born June 27, 1925, in Youngstown, to Gabrial and Agnes Moross. The
family moved to Conneaut in 1926. Mrs. Van Nortwick moved to Torrance,
Calif., in 1948 and retired to Payson, Ariz., in 1995.
Survivors include her husband of 30 years, George Van Nortwick; three sons,
James Best of Paradise Valley, Ariz., John Best of Chico, Calif., and Richard
Bigus of Kailua, Hawaii; a daughter, Barbara Cunningham of Long Beach, Calif.;
10 grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Moross of Whittier, Calif., and George
Moross of Battle Creek, Mich.; and a sister, Eleanor M. Goodman of Kingsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Best; and two

FAIRPORT HARBOR - George V. Olle, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at LakeMed
Nursing Home in Painesville.
Mr. Olle was born Sept. 23, 1911, in Conneaut, the son of John and Ida
Olle.
He was a plant superintendent at Diamond Shamrock, retiring after 40 years. He
was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Fairport Harbor, where he served on the
church council for many years.
Mr. Olle also was on Fairport Harbor Village Council, Fairport Harbor School
Board and the Lake County Planning Commission.
Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Heuer of Mentor; a grandson, Clayton
Heuer, also of Mentor; and a sister, Florence Wainio of Allen Park, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ina Olle, in 1983; four
brothers, Matt, Ted, Art and Elmer Olle; five sisters, Sue Harza, Mayme Fisher,
Ida Olle, Saima Haglund and Allie Richard.

CONNEAUTVILLE, Pa. — Sadie Ruth Clute, 84, of State Highway 198, died Friday,
Dec. 6, 2002, at Rolling Fields Inc. She was born June 30, 1918 in Coraopolis,
Pa., the daughter of Vensel Holets and Alma Dozark Holets.
She worked as an LPN at Shadeland Nursing Home and Heasters Nursing Home of
Conneautville.
She married three times. Her first husband was Anathony Mayers, her second
husband was William L. Warner and her third husband was John Clute.
Survivors include three daughters; Ruby Ball of Conneaut, Bonnie Egli of
Springboro, Pa. and Alma Warner of Polk, Pa., two sons; Frank Warner of
Proctorville and Elvin Warner of Meadville, Pa.; four sisters, Etta Barton of
Platea, Pa., Rose Henretta of Springboro, Pa., Gladys Whippo of Albion, Pa. and

Church officiating.
Interment will be at Albion Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from noon to the time of the service
Tuesday at the funeral home.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Pa. - Alberta P. "Bert" Henry, 89, formerly from West
Springfield, Pa., died Thursday Dec. 5, 2002, at the Inn Conneaut Health
Center in Conneaut.
She was born May 20, 1913 in Lawsonham, Pa., in Clarion County, the daughter of
George Washington and Della May (Cobbett) Cerby.
She worked as a cooking assistant in the New Kensington Citizen's General
Hospital for five years and previously for Rich's Food Products in Lake City,
Pa.
Mrs. Henry was a member of the Weslyan Methodist Church in North Springfield,
Pa.
Survivors include her son, Robert H. Henry of Lake City, Pa.; two sisters,
Harriet E. Rusnock of Arnold, Pa. and Virginia Rochna of New Kensington, Pa.;
and a brother, James F. Cerby of Edinboro, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marchand H. Henry on May 8,
1971; whom she married in 1937; a daughter, Rosalee Henry; and a sister, Mary
Stanley.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Jean Evans Thompson Funeral Home,
11883 Main St., East Springfield, Pa., with the Rev. Marvin Davis of the
Federated Church of East Springfield officiating.
Burial will be in Erie County Memorial Gardens

ASHTABULA - Kenneth Juhola, 70, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at his residence.
He was born March 25, 1932, in Ashtabula, to Swante and Nelma (Lintala) Juhola.
Mr. Juhola graduated from Harbor High School in 1950. He served on the U.S. Navy
icebreaker, the USS Staten Island, from 1952-1956. He married Rosemary England
Nov. 21, 1953.
He enjoyed all sports, especially when his sons and grandsons were playing. He
was a past president of the Harbor Athletic Boosters. He worked to build the
concession stand tower at Wenner Field and coached Senior League baseball teams.
He built 15 miniature lighthouses to rehabilitate his shoulder after neck
surgery.
Mr. Juhola retired from the Emco Wheaton Company in Conneaut in 1992,
after working there as an "A" machinist 20 years.
He was a lifetime member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; sons Michael of Columbus and Daniel, Thomas and
Andrew of Ashtabula; and grandchildren Andria, Danny, Greg, Kaylee, Ryan, Emily
and Abby.
Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Potti Lakeside Funeral Home, 1329 Lake Ave.,
Ashtabula, officiated by the Rev. Richard Bowen. Burial is in Edgewood
Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6-9 p.m. Thursday.

ASHTABULA - Donald Charles Harley, 86, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at The
Villa at the Lake in Conneaut.
He was born June 22, 1916, in Albion, Pa., the son of Roy R. and Mable E.
(Hoxie) Harley. He had been an Ashtabula resident since 1940.
Mr. Harley was employed as an engineer for the former New York Central Railroad
for more than 39 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the United Transportation Union. He enjoyed carpentry,
gardening, fishing and camping during his early years.
Survivors include his wife, Marion E. (Brail), whom he married June 21, 1940, in
Austinburg; a son, Wayne M. Harley of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a daughter, Brenda J.
Korb of North Kingsville; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey D., Bradley J. and
Gregory S. Korb, Craig D. and Michael T. Harley, and Jennifer L. McReynolds and
Angela K. Thompson; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marian Ellis of
Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bruce A. Harley; and a sister,
Bernice Hallett.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Childs and Williams Family Funeral Home,
1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Lay pastor Bill Daywalt of Prospect
Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Burial will follow in Ridgeview Cemetery, Ashtabula Township.

CONNEAUT - Evener E. Joiner, 87, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at
Inn-Conneaut Health Center, where he had been a patient for the past week.
He was born Oct. 21, 1915, in New London, Conn., a son of Evener A. and Edna
(Cornell) Joyner.
Mr. Joiner had lived in Arizona for 18 years before moving to Conneaut in
April 2001. He spent most of his adult life in Connecticut, where he had built
his own home. He worked in the warehouse for General Dynamics in Groton, Conn.
Mr. Joiner enjoyed his family, camping, traveling, and having cookouts with his
brother Paul.
Survivors include his four daughters, Diana McGuire, with whom he lived in
Conneaut, Nancy Brown of Marana, Ariz., Kathleen Baffuto of New York, and
Rosemarie Rizzuto of Florida; two sons, Frederick Joiner of Ledyard, Conn., and
Russell Joiner of Joplin, Mo.; a sister, Flora Maynard of Groton, Conn.; three
brothers, Milton Joyner of Waterford, Conn., Paul Joyner of Enfield, Conn., and
William Joyner of Oakdale, Conn.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred (Maynard) Joiner; two
daughters, Linda Espinosa and Mary Joiner; and two sons, John and Joseph Joiner.
No service or visitation will be observed.

CONNEAUT - Charles L. Daub, 96, of Conneaut, died Wednesday, April
2, 2003, at Carington Park in Ashtabula, where he had been a patient the past
five days.
He was born Sept. 6, 1906, in Conneaut, in his current home on Mill
Street, the son of Frank L. and Emma A. (Daugherty) Daub, and was a lifelong
Conneaut resident.
He worked as a machinist and sand molder at the former Nickel Plate Railroad. He
was retired from the former Webb Manufacturing, where he was employed as a
pattern maker and also worked in the maintenance department.
He married Elnore Daub on Jan. 11, 1937, in Waterloo, N.Y.
A Methodist, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, camping, genealogy,
astrology, woodworking and machining in his own shop.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Hoag of Phoenix; two sons, Frank of
Conneaut, and Jack of Williamsfield; 16 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elnore, in 1992; two sons,
Charles and James; and two brothers, George and Peter Daugherty.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208
Liberty St., Conneaut. The Rev. James Daub of York, Pa., the deceased's
grandson, will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, Pa.
Calling hour is 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the funeral home.
