Reed
CONNEAUT — Jesse Reed, 79, formerly of East 44th Street died
Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Harrington Care Home.
He was born February 18, 1924 in Iaeger, West Virginia, the son of Albert and
Octavia (Blevins) Reed and had been an Ashtabula resident over 50 years.
Mr. Reed worked for the City of Ashtabula Department of Public Works for 33
years, retiring in 1979.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II earning the following
ribbons: American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific w/1 Bronze Star, Philippine
Liberation, and Good Conduct. He also received the World War II Victory Medal.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, camping and spending time with his
family and grandchildren.
His survivors include four sons, Don, Carl, and Jimmie, all of Ashtabula, and
Billy of Kingsville; three daughters, Mary Terry of Kingsville, Octavia Frishkorn of Conneaut, and Darlene Rose of Marietta, Georgia; 17 grandchildren;
9 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Laurabelle Reed on February 7,
2003; one great-grandson, Clayton Garrett Demshar; one sister, Lillie Powell;
three brothers, Lewis, Jim, and Shelvin Reed; and his parents.
A service will be held 11AM Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at Ducro Funeral Home, 4524
Elm Avenue, Ashtabula, Ashtabula. Rev. Michael Legg, Pastor of First Church of
the Nazarene, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery,
Austinburg Road, Ashtabula Township where full military honors will be held.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 P.M. and 7 to 9 PM Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at the
funeral home.

E. Larry Johnson
CONNEAUT — Lawrence E. "Larry" Johnson, 72, of S. Parrish Rd.,
Conneaut, OH, died Saturday morning, November 29, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center
of complications following a cerebral hemorrhage 11 years ago.
He was born May 25, 1931, in Cleveland, OH, a son of Carl Evert and Leona (Sippola)
Johnson.
He was a U S. Army veteran serving in Germany in the '50's. He was employed as a
machinist by the former "Nickel Plate Railroad and also Maxwell Industries. He
was an avid fisherman and was known for his fishing boat He enjoyed watching
John Wayne movies, and was a former member of the American Legion and the Eagles
Club.
Survivors include his wife Lois (Woodworth) Johnson; four daughters, Kim
(George) Snyder of Conneaut, OH, Betsy (Bob) Moline of Ashtabula, OH, Kathy
(Tim) Hawk of Conneaut, OH, and Tammy Johnson of Hanford, CA; two sons, John
(Diane) Johnson and Ted Johnson all of Conneaut, OH; 10 grandchildren; one great
grandson, and a half brother, Wayne Kamppi, Jr. of Conneaut, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Jeff in childhood, and his
stepfather Wayne Kamppi, Sr.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, December 3, at the Marcy
Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, with Duane
Loomis officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memory
Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 PM. Memorial

Miro
R. Turk, Sr.
HOLLYWOOD, FL — Miro R. Turk, Sr., 75, of Miramar, FL, died
Saturday, November 29, 2003 in Memorial Regional Hospital, Hollywood, FL.
He was born in Conneaut on November 20, 1928, son of the late Frank and Frances
(Slegovec) Turk.
Mr. Turk was employed by the former Nickle Plate and N&W Railroads in the
maintenance department for 47 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and
served during the Korean war. He was a member of the St. Frances Cabrini Church.
Mr. Turk enjoyed woodworking and mechanical repairs.
He is survived by a daughter Denise Marie Costello of Pompano Beach, FL; his
son, Miro R. Turk, Jr. of Southwest Ranches, FL; and two sisters, Flora DeNunzio
of Conneaut, and Mary Kuzna of Croatia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Delores.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at
Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville. Reverend Raymond Thomas, Pastor
of the St. Frances Cabrini Church, will be officiating.

F. Woodworth
ASHTABULA — Boyd F. Woodworth, 87, of Madison, OH, died Sunday,
November 30, 2003, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born on December 6, 1915 in Conneaut, OH, the son of the late Fred and
Zada (Andrews) Woodworth and had been an area resident most of his life.
Mr. Woodworth worked for the RMI Sodium Plant, which he retired from in 1974. He
had served in the U.S. Navy and sailed for the Great Lakes Steamship Company for
16 years.
He is survived by a nephew, Fred Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Lempi (Toikkanen).
Funeral Service will be held 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at the
THOMPSON - SMITH FUNERAL HOME, with the Reverend Clyde McGee, pastor of the Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be at the Kelloggsville

Dorothy R. Horwood Hewit
ASHTABULA — Dorothy R. Horwood Hewit, 92, of East Main Road,
Conneaut, OH, died Wednesday evening, December 3, 2003, at the Ashtabula County
Nursing Home in Kingsville, OH.
She was born on November 3, 1911 in Summerland, British Columbia, a daughter of
Fred G. and Hettie M. (Cowell) Barnard.
A Conneaut resident since 1926, she was previously employed at the Conneaut
Rubber & Plastics and also at the W. T. Grant Company.
Mrs. Hewit was a member of First Baptist Church, was active in the Barbara Deer
Circle, and the church memorial committee. She was an active volunteer at the
Conneaut Railroad Museum, and also belonged to the Happy Oldsters at Amboy
United Methodist Church.
She supported her sons and family in their athletic activities, and served as
room mother and president of the Amboy P.T.A. and the Conneaut P.T.A. She
enjoyed collecting anything related to cardinals, playing pinochle, crocheting,
knitting, baking, and candy making, especially fudge.
Survivors include four sons, Donald A. G. (Patricia) Horwood of Conneaut, Robert
K. (Anita) of Plymouth, MI, James D. (Jean) of Tidioute, PA, and Jeffrey P.
(Kathy) of Conneaut; her half-sister, Joyce Funk of Conneaut; her step-sister,
Velma Eagley of Conneaut; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Horwood in 1959;
her second husband, H. Lyle Hewit; two daughters-in-law, Ruth Horwood, and Mary
Louise Horwood; a brother, David “Sam” Barnard; two sisters, Beatrice Hazen, and
Alfrieda Stevenson; and a grandson, James D. Horwood Jr.
Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2003, at the MARCY
FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the
Reverend Walter Coy, pastor of United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will
be in East Conneaut Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday evening, December 5, 2003, and on
Saturday, December 6, 2003, beginning at 10 a.m.

Richey
PLANO, TX — Patrick Richey, 42, of Plano, TX, formerly of
Ashtabula, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at the Medical Center of Plano, TX.
Born on January 3, 1961 in Ashtabula, Mr. Richey was the son of Joseph P. Richey
and Janet (Robinson) Richey Frazee.
He attended Ashtabula Schools and had served in the U.S. Army. He is married to
Vickie (Busey) Olsen.
Mr. Richey worked in maintenance for the Red Roof Inns, first in Virginia Beach,
VA, and then in Plano, TX, and was in the process of setting up his own
maintenance company.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, sports, and collecting baseball cards.
Mr. Richey is survived by his wife; his mother and step-father, Robert Frazee of
Kingsville and Port Richey, FL; a son, David (Denise) Richey of Conneaut; a
brother, Michael J. Richey of Plano, TX; a step-daughter, Jennie Vincent of
Plano, TX; two half-sisters, Patricia Wanzenberg, and JoAnne Kearney, both of
IL; three step-sisters, Shelley Lyle, Tina Breland, and Debi Frazee, all of
Kingsville; a step-brother, Robert Frazee Jr. of Kingsville; and one grandson,
Cambden.
He was preceded by his father who died in November of 1984.
Services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2003, at the ROSS - BILLMAN
FUNERAL HOME, 526 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Reverend Stephen Long, of
the First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, officiating. Burial will follow at
Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hour will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Funeral Home.

Thomas A. Welker
CONNEAUT — Thomas A. Welker, 63, of Main Street, Conneaut, died
Friday, November 21, 2003, at Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland following a
lengthy illness.
Mr. Welker was born on April 6, 1940 in Cleveland, a son of the late Howard and
Edna (Lauterer) Welker and had been a Conneaut resident since 1994.
While in Conneaut he had been employed by Conneaut Leather Company and Days Inn.
He owned and operated Welker Trucking in Cleveland.
He has no known relatives but is survived by his adopted family, the Blenmans,
here in Conneaut.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2003, in
Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut.

George
F. Ferl
CONNEAUT — George F. Ferl, age 79, of Conneaut, died at the
Ashtabula County Nursing Home early Sunday morning, December 7, 2003, on the
“Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor Invasion,” an event in our nation’s history
that was very dear to George.
George was born in Conneaut on July 25, 1924, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Gersey)
Ferl. He was a 1942 graduate of Conneaut High School, enlisted in the United
States Marines and became a machine-gun expert, receiving an honorable
discharge. He was then drafted in the United States Army, where he served as a
Drill Instructor, and served in Company A, 1st Battalion, Armored Replacement
Training Center until he was honorably discharged in 1945.
George then went to work as a commercial fisherman with D.D. Anthony. For a
short time, he tended bar at the former Cue House and later went on to work at
the P & C Dock Company in the repair gang. He also worked in water construction
with the Merichapman Scott Company. George retired from SCM Chemical Plant in
1992, after 24 years of service in the maintenance department.
Mr. Ferl was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Conneaut, a lifetime
member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Cowle Post #151,
and the United Steel Workers Local #7334.
He also enjoyed horse racing and was an avid sports fan; he enjoyed the
Cleveland Indians and football. He loved to spend time with his family, friends
and especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Anna Fercanna and
Agnes Ferl.
Mr. Ferl is survived by his wife, Joyace A. (Kovacs) Ferl, whom he married on
April 18, 1963; four sons, Jerry of Ashtabula, George of Kingsville, Michael of
San Antonio, TX, and Dennis of Houston, TX; a daughter, Kathy Ferl; two
brothers, Joseph of Conneaut, and John of Erie, PA; a sister, Mary Jane Grubke
of Conneaut; 10 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at
the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Lois R. Detrick, 74, of Creek Road,
Kingsville Township, OH, died Tuesday evening, December 9, 2003, at her home.
She was born on February 11, 1929, in Ashtabula, OH, a daughter of William and
Florence (Rennick) Applebee.
A 1946 graduate of Kingsville High School, she owned and operated Detrick’s
Family Restaurant for many years.
She was a member of Kelloggsville Church of the Nazarene, where her parents were
charter members, and she formerly served as pianist.
Her most enjoyable moments were spending time with her husband, children, and
grandchildren. She had a love for music, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and was an
avid Indians and Browns fan.
Survivors include her husband, Edward R. Detrick, whom she married on October
11, 1947; three daughters, Dianne Fultz, Doreen (Paul) Callaghan and Debbie
(Lance) Drew, all of Conneaut, OH; three sons, Greg (Patti) of Ashtabula, OH,
Gene (Gina) of Conneaut, OH, and Gary (Sherry) of North Kingsville, OH; three
sisters, Edna (Frances) Kitchen of Linesville, PA, Eleanor Dehner and Marilyn
(Joe) Simak, both of Conneaut, OH; two brothers, Donald (Beverly) Applebee of
Ashtabula, OH, and Jack (Bonnie) Applebee of Conneaut, OH; 14 grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William Applebee; and three
sisters, Ethel Anderson, Doris Furmage, and Beth Sheneman.

CONNEAUT — Kathryn Joan Parks, 77, formerly of West Main Road,
Conneaut, OH, died Wednesday morning, December 10, 2003, at The Villa At The
Lake.
She was born on April 24, 1926, in Stockdale, OH, and was the daughter of George
B. and Grace E. (Snodgrass) Wilson.
Mrs. Parks graduated from Minford High School in Minford, OH, and moved to
Conneaut in 1959, where she was employed as a unit aide at Brown Memorial
Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1994.
She attended South Ridge Baptist Church and was a former member of Rose Chapter
#22, Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed her family, especially her
grandchildren, and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Elva (Robert) Busch of Bridgewater, NJ, and
Mary Ellen (Gary) Schatz of Beaufort, SC; two sons, Dean W. (Becky) Parks of
Holland, OH, and George W. (Debra) Parks of North Kingsville, OH; three sisters,
Mary Wilson and Ellen Murphy, both of Minford, OH, and Kay Blackburn of
Columbus, OH; a brother, Robert Wilson of Circleville, OH; five grandchildren,
Laura Noonan, Kathryn Schatz, Karrie Trautman, Erin Wires, and Brian Parks; and
a great-grandchild, Elliot Wires.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Dean P. Parks, in
2001.

W. Lynch III
CONNEAUT — Hiram W. Lynch III, 99, formerly of West Main Road,
Conneaut, OH, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at The Villa At The Lake,
Conneaut, OH.
He was born on January 3, 1904, in Wolf Summit, WV, the son of Hiram W. Jr. and
Susan V. (Ritter) Lynch.
A Conneaut resident since 1939, Mr. Lynch graduated from Salem High School in WV
and attended Michigan State University and Syracuse University.
Following World War I, he was a member of the Michigan National Guard. He was a
graduate of Long School of Navigation and was a pilot for Great Lakes Marine
with the U.S. Steel Fleet. He later worked as a Switchman for the former Nickle
Plate Railroad and retired in 1966 as Yardmaster from the Bessemer and Lake Erie
Railroad.
Mr. Lynch was a member of First Baptist Church, the church’s book club,
Evergreen Lodge #222 F & AM, 32nd degree Valley of Cleveland, and Al Koran
Shrine. He enjoyed traveling, photography, working in his yard, and being with
his family.
Survivors include his son, Hiram W. “Bill” (Marilyn) Lynch IV of Kingsville, OH;
his sister, Harriet Sadler of New Castle, IN; two grandsons, Hiram W. Lynch V of
Indianapolis, IN, and Edmond Ritter Lynch of Rochester, MI; and four
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn S. Lynch, in 1993;
three sisters, Berda B. Butler, Anna Ilett, and Catherine Teeter; and three
brothers, Edmond R., Frank C., and Allen B. Lynch.
Funeral Service will be 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, December 13, 2003, at the

Jean Margaret Huston
CONNEAUT — Jean Margaret Huston, 78, of Daniels Avenue, Conneaut,
OH, died Tuesday morning, December 9, 2003, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital
following a six-month illness.
She was born on November 15, 1925, in Conneaut, OH, a daughter of the late
Charles and Edna (McDonald) Yarnell.
A 1943 graduate of Conneaut High School, Mrs. Huston was a lifelong Conneaut
resident and was employed as a sales clerk at the Western Auto Store for 30
years. She had also worked at Eighmy Products for a short time.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir at one
time.
She enjoyed raising flowers, especially roses, watching the Cleveland Indians
and being with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Donald J. Huston, whom she married on November
24, 1944; her daughter, Susan (Ray) Woodworth of Conneaut; three sons, Roland
(Thelma) of Old Town, ME, Donald II “Joe” (Pat) of Indio, CA, and Larry (Faye)
of Platea, PA; her sister, Barbara Wheeler of Fredericksburg, VA; 22
grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Raymond Woodworth II
and Keith Johnson; a great-grandson, Cody Woodworth; and her sister, Marjorie
Holmes.

CONNEAUT — Marian L. “Mary Lou” Schatz, 75, formerly of Millard
Ave., Conneaut, OH, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, December 11, at UHHS
Brown Memorial Hospital. She was born May 12, 1928, in Conneaut, OH, a daughter
of Carl and Anna (Pratt) Snyder.
A 1946 graduate of Conneaut High School, Mrs. Schatz had previously worked at
the former Sugar Bowl Restaurant and at the Astatic. She was a member of
Lakeview United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and also Bible
school, belonged to the Ladies Aid, Missionary Society, and worked with the
funeral luncheon and altar committees. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and
baking for her family.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan (Tim) Starkey of North Kingsville, OH;
three sons, Dan (Diane) Schatz and Eric (Cindy) Schatz, all of Conneaut, OH, and
Gary (Mary Ellen) Schatz of Beaufort, SC; two sisters, Marilyn Connor of San
Jose, CA, and Marjorie Bacon of Keene, OH; a brother, Carl Snyder of Okeechobee,
FL; 15 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, George Schatz.

John Roger Olds
GREENSBORO, NC — John Roger Olds, 84, passed away peacefully in
his sleep at his home on Thursday, December 11, 2003. He had been under the care
of Hospice since October 1, 2003.
Known to friends and family as Roger, he was born on May 13, 1919, to Ben and
Sada Olds, who lived on Oldholm Farm in Conneaut, OH. Roger enjoyed farm life
and participated in varsity sports and leadership activities at Rowe High
School. Later, he enrolled at Ohio State University. He graduated in 1942 from
Western Kentucky University with a degree in agriculture.
Roger Olds and Bonita Munger of Jefferson, OH, were married 57 years ago. He
began working for International Harvester in Buffalo, NY, shortly thereafter. In
1962, he joined the marketing department of the Ford Tractor Division in upstate
New York. In 1983, Roger retired from Ford in Detroit, after rising to the level
of Marketing Representation Manager with Ford’s Overseas Tractor Operations. In
this position, he traveled to about 40 developing countries. He and Bonnie lived
in Ankara, Turkey, for six months. The couple enjoyed 20 years of retirement
together, including 16 in Leesburg, FL, and three at Abbottwood in Greensboro,
NC.
Roger was preceded in death by his sister, Dora Boling, and brother, Durward
Olds, and he is survived by his sister, Jane Fitzpatrick of Lexington, KY, and
Keith Olds of Forest Hills, NY. Roger is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie,
and four children: Mona Olds of Greensboro, NC, Ben Olds of Valdez, AK, Doug

Rose Marie Garcia
ERIE, PA — Rose Marie Garcia, 85, of West Main Road, Conneaut,
died Friday, December 12, 2003 in the Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA.
Born in Akron on July 7, 1918, the daughter of the late John L. and Estelle (Fossee)
Ruth, she had resided in Conneaut for the past 55 years.
She was a graduate of Akron University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Home
Economics.
During WWII, Mrs. Garcia was employed by the Babcox-Wilcox Company in the
priorities department in Barberton. She was also a physical education teacher at
St. John’s High School for many years.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, enjoyed singing in the church choir, and
was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the
MacDowell Ensemble. Folk dancing was especially enjoyable for Mrs. Garcia, and
she helped to form the Dirndel Dancers, and also performed with the Kilpi
Dancers. She also traveled Europe with several musical tours. For many years,
she taught exercise classes at the Dorothy Malek Annex.
A civic leader, she was a Girl Scout leader, served on the Board of Directors of
the Conneaut Community Center, was named “Citizen of the Year” along with her
husband, Andy, served as a director of Buckeye Girls State, and was a member of
the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her family and grandchildren were very important to her, and she was the family
historian. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, flowers, and canning. She
volunteered much of her time to the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Garcia of San Francisco, CA; six sons,
Andrew and Philip, both of Conneaut, Thomas of Lake Tahoe, NV, Fred of Concord,
CA, James of Canville, CA, and Richard of Shaker Heights; seven grandchildren;
and one sister, Mary Virginia Plotkin of Angola, NY.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; and three
brothers, Richard, Jack, and Ben Ruth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at
St. Mary’s Church, 480 State Street, Conneaut, with the Reverend Raymond Thomas,
Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

died Saturday morning December 13, 2003 at her home following a short illness.

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Carol Ann Duva, 48, a resident of North
Kingsville, OH, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003, in the Austinburg
Rehabilitation Center.
Born on July 22, 1955, in Ashtabula, she was the daughter of Herbert and
Jacqueline (Hoshal) Cuffman.
She attended the Joint Vocational School Data Processing Program and graduated
from Edgewood High School in 1973.
On October 15, 1976, she married Mario Duva.
Mrs. Duva worked for several years with Society Bank as a supervisor, and for 14
years with Carington Park Nursing Home in the Accounting Department.
A member of the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, she enjoyed crafts,
reading, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Shauna Duva of Ashtabula; her parents, of North
Kingsville; a sister, Cathy (Jeff) Ezzone of Conneaut; a brother, Joel (Terri)
Cuffman of Ashtabula; and nieces and nephews, Amber Ezzone, Tracy Deluca, Cami
Stebbins, Bud Mortensen, Ben Mortensen, and Alex Ezzone.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mario, in 1988.

ASHTABULA — Helen Margaret Gruber, 93, formerly of Monroe
Township, OH, died Wednesday evening, December 17, 2003, at the Ashtabula County
Nursing Home.
Mrs. Gruber was born on March 8, 1910 in Hungary, the daughter of Joseph and
Elizabeth (Radvanyi) Kerekes and has been a resident of Ashtabula County for
most of her life.
She was a life member of St. Andrews Catholic Church and was a former member of
St. Andrews Council of Women.
Mrs. Gruber enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara E. Gruber of Kingsville, OH, Helen A.
(Fred) Mallory of Pierpont, OH, and Frances R. (Kenneth) Gainforth of
Unionville, MI; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers,
Adam Kerekes of Ashtabula, OH, Gene Wheeler, and Stephen Kerekes, both of CA.
Mrs. Gruber was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Felix, whom she
married on November 28, 1931; a son, Anthony; and grandson, Patrick.

Martha K. Punkar
CONNEAUT — Martha K. Punkar, 88, of Salem Street, Conneaut, OH,
died Saturday morning, December 20, 2003, upon arrival at Brown Memorial
Hospital in Conneaut.
A Conneaut resident since 1940, Mrs. Punkar was born on April 3, 1915 in North
Springfield, PA, a daughter of the late Salomon and Mari (Riisio) Kesatie.
She was a graduate of Springfield High School and was employed in the office of
the Marcy Funeral Home for a number of years. She was also employed by both
Sears, and Montgomery Ward, while raising her children, and retired in 1977 from
the office of Brown Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Punkar was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, having sang
in the choir, and also served as church organist for over 30 years.
In her leisure, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, crosswords, and most crafts,
including knitting, crocheting, and while wintering in FL, basket weaving.
Survivors include her husband, Oscar O. Punkar whom she married on March 13,
1977 in Conneaut; a daughter, Kathryn (Stephen) Raevuori of Dover, NH; a
step-daughter, Mary Lou (Ron) Rolland of Naperville, IL; two sons, Andrew (Anni)
Raevuori of Valencia, CA, and John (Kerry) Raevuori of Atlanta, GA. There are
four grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two
sisters, Sylvia Lauttamus of Wauwatosa, WI, and Elsa Dross of Albuquerque, NM;
and a brother, Jacob Kesatie of Conneaut.
Mrs. Punkar was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Lempi Kesatie,
Impi Ahlberg, and Ellen Sippola; six brothers, John, Martin, Toivo, Soloman,
Andrew, and Wiljo Kesatie; and a step-son, Robert Punkar.
Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at the Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church, Conneaut, with the Reverend Clyde McGee officiating.
Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.

CONNEAUT — Henry C. Jarvi, 73, of West Main Road, Conneaut, OH,
died unexpectedly Saturday morning, December 20, 2003, at his home of a probable
coronary.
He was born on December 9, 1930 in Conneaut, OH, a son of Henry E. and Sigrid (Leppella)
Jarvi.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, Mr. Jarvi was a self-employed Building Contractor
and also worked at Murphy Phoenix in Cleveland, OH, and at Cabot Titanium in
Ashtabula, OH as Production Supervisor.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Jarvi was Lutheran by faith and enjoyed traveling, animals, watching
football, talking with friends, and being with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Morris, and Lori (Barry) Todd, all of
Conneaut, OH; two sons, Eugene M. (Donna), and Henry Jr. (Chris), all of
Conneaut, OH; two brothers, Robert, and Erland Jarvi, both of Conneaut, OH; 12
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta on April 9, 2002; a
son, David James Jarvi; a grandson, Daniel Bryan Morris; a brother, Richard
Jarvi; and a sister, Eleanor Witt.

CONNEAUT — Anna Mako Ware, 88, died Saturday, December 20, 2003,
at the Villa at the Lake, Conneaut.
Born in Monroe Township on June 5, 1915, the daughter of the late Joseph and
Anna (Zednick) Mako, she had resided in this area most of her life. She was a
member of St. Andrews Catholic Church of Sheffield, where she was a member of
their Senior Society.
Mrs. Ware served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II and Korea as a Sergeant First
Class. She was a member of the DAV Chapter No. 39, the DAV Auxiliary Chapter No.
66, the V.F.W. Post No. 2836, the Women’s Army Corps Veteran Association, the
Gold Star Wives of America, and the Disabled American Veterans.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed fishing, reading, and traveling. She graduated
from Conneaut High School with the Class of 1932.
Survivors include a son, Michael J. Ware of CA; a daughter, Lynne F. Magness of
Glendale, AZ; a grandson, Michael-Jeremy of CA; eight nieces; and 14 nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Ware;
a sister, Rose Yuhas; and three brothers, Joseph Jr., Frank, and Paul Mako.

Mrs. Leonard was a life member of Pierpont Presbyterian Church and also the
Senior Citizens Fellowship Club of the church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking,
and especially baking delicious apple pies, being with family and attending
sporting events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: three daughters: Mrs. Wayne (Virginia) Toivola of Ashtabula,
Ohio; Mrs. Gaylord (Patricia) Millard; and Mrs. Dick (Sandy) Campbell, both of
Pierpont, Ohio; one son, Mr. Norman (Shirley) Leonard of Jefferson, Ohio; nine

CONNEAUT — Donald G. Chadwick, 82, of Fifield Ave., Conneaut, OH, died
Wednesday, December 24, 2003, and Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula,
Ohio following a three-year illness. He was born August 31, 1921, in Washington,
PA, a son of James R. and Agnes M. (Morgan) Chadwick.
A Conneaut resident for 46 years, he moved here from Oakmont, PA, and was a
chemical process operator at R.M.I. for 27 years, retiring in 1985. He was a
U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. He was a member of St. Mary
Catholic Church and Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion. He was an avid
Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan and enjoyed most sports.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn (Lattner) Chadwick whom he married May 22,
1942; two daughters, Cheryl Soltis of Conneaut, OH and Barbara (Michael) Yusko
of Streetsboro, OH; his son, Donald (Loretta) Chadwick of Houston, TX; his
sister Eleanor Verzinskie of Verona, PA; nine grandchildren, Angela Lewis, Brian
Soltis, Donald Chadwick, William Chadwick, Michelle Yusko, Christopher Chadwick,
Daniel Yusko, Lauren Yusko, and Meghan Chadwick; and three great grandchildren,

SAYBROOK TWP. — Ava Rose Loeffel, 49, of North Ridge Road West
died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at her home. She was born
February 2, 1954 in Conneaut, the daughter of Eino and Edna (Kelly) Rantamaki
and had been a lifelong area resident.
An artistic and creative person, she loved taking care of her grandkids and
enjoyed flowers, gardening, antiques, kittens, and the summertime.
Her survivors include her husband, Lester Green; five children, Regina Sheldon
of Kingsville, Brian Susevich and his wife Danielle of Kirtland, Michael
Susevich of Madison, and Jennifer and Amanda Loeffel, both of Ashtabula; and six
grandchildren, Ashley, Randy, Sade’, Mya, Kaleb, and Ethan.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2003

ASHTABULA — Kenneth James Ray, 58, a resident of Ashtabula died
December 25, 2003 at University Hospital of Cleveland. Born January 15, 1945 in
Conneaut he was the son of Louis and Mary (Muchiarone) Ray.
Mr. Ray and his brothers owned and operated Ray Roofing Company and he earlier
worked for and managed Pittsburgh Paint Company. He was a member of Mother of
Sorrows Church and Roofers Local 44, and was a former member of the East
Ashtabula Club, Sons of Italy, Wolves Club and Elks. He enjoyed motorcycling,
was an avid golfer, and for several years he was a drummer for Brothers and
Friends Band.
Survivors include a son Kenny (Cathy) Ray of Ashtabula, a daughter Debi (John)
Stranman of Ashtabula, grandchildren Kenny Ray Jr., Johnny Stranman and Toni
Stranman, brothers Robert (Carol) Ray of Ashtabula and Gary (Ginny) Ray of
Geneva, and a sister LuAnn Izzi of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

NORTH KINGSVILLE — J. Leslie Hadley, 87, of East Center Street,
North Kingsville, OH, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at the Cleveland Clinic in
Cleveland.
He was born on August 14, 1916, in West Branch, Iowa, the son of John H. and
Bessie (Bassett) Hadley. He married Pauline Bower on July 14, 1939.
Mr. Hadley was employed for 25 years with Sanborn Motors in Ashtabula, as a
counter man, until his retirement. He is also a former North Kingsville Village
Councilman and was a very active member of the North Kingsville Presbyterian
Church.
He enjoyed reading and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren.
Surviving him are his wife; three sons, Robert W. (Kathleen) Hadley of Fairfield
Bay, AR, Frank (Diane) Hadley of Ashtabula, and Douglas J. (Priscilla) Hadley of
Grand Rapids, MI; two daughters, Joyce (Bruce) Carpenter of Kingsville, and
Roberta M. (Chris) Svenson of Denmark Township; 12 grandchildren; 13

Born in Everett, WV on June 22, 1933, the son of the late Thomas and Rosebud
(McCormick), he had resided here for the past 54 years. Prior to that he made
his home in Zanesville, OH.
Mr. Thornton was employed by Morrison Molded Fiber Glass in Ashtabula as a
Technical Engineer and retired in 1995 after 45 years of service.
He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in West Springfield,
where he served as an Elder since 1972. For the past two years he had taught
Bible Studies at the Lake Erie Correctional Institute.
In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, and repairing small
equipment.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, to whom he had been married for the past 54
years; two daughters, Tamara DiSanti of Erie, PA, and Teresa Plott of Beaver
Center, PA; a son, William A. Jr. of Albion, PA; six grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Houston of Huntington Beach, CA, and

She was born on March 3, 1927, in Conneaut, OH, a daughter of Arthur Charles and
Elizabeth (Mackey) Adams.
A 1945 graduate of Conneaut High School, Beverly was not only a drum majorette,
but also was active in the music department, where she sang in the choirs, and
played French horn in the band and orchestra. She has sung since she was nine
years old. In her lifetime, she sang with church choirs, the MacDowell Ensemble,
the Covered Bridge Chorus of Sweet Adelines, and the double quartet "Songs R
Us".
She had been employed at the former Astatic Corporation, the Lakeville Water
Office and the Conneaut City Water Office, retiring in 1976.
Other organizations she belonged to were the Dean Avenue School PTA and Rowe
High School PTA. She was a charter member of Rainbow for Girls and the Child
Guidance League. She also was a member of Rose Chapter #22 Order of Eastern
Star, was a Red Cross Volunteer, a former Gray Lady at Brown Memorial Hospital,
and was a member of the P.A.C.E. class. At the Conneaut First United Methodist
Church, Beverly belonged to the Trustees Committee, was a member of the Altar
Guild, the Wesleyan Choir and, for a short time, directed the Junior High Youth
Choir.
Beverly was also keenly interested in tracing her family's roots. In her quest
to unearth genealogical information, she became a member of the Ashtabula County
Genealogical Society and the East London Genealogical Society.
She was an avid reader, and it was not uncommon for her to read two or three
books each month. She also developed an interest in painting in oil, watercolors
and acrylics. Members of her family are honored to display many of her works in
their homes.
Her family was always first and foremost in her life, as her husband and three
sons will attest. She was an enthusiastic supporter of their many and varied
activities.
Survivors include her husband, Charles D. Rockwell, whom she married on January
16, 1946; three sons, Charles A. (Joan Kalmers) of Wexford, PA, Thomas A.
(Connie Nimelli) of Cleveland, OH, and Richard A. Rockwell of Texas City, TX;
her brother, George E. Adams of Conneaut, OH; her grandchildren, Jennifer
(Jeffrey) Chaplin, Jeffrey C. (Salima) Rockwell, "T.J." Thomas J. (Vanessa)
Rockwell, Andrew A. (Elizabeth) Rockwell, Kristen Rockwell, and Kari (Cory)
McIntire; and great-grandchildren, Faith Ashlyn and Lillian Elizabeth Rockwell,
and Emma May Chaplin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Lillian Adams Aho.
Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at First
United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend
Chuck Graham officiating. Private burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening (today), December 30, 2003,
at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut,
OH.

Audrey M. Dodge
CONNEAUT — Audrey M. Dodge, 71, of West Main Road, Conneaut, OH,
died Monday afternoon, December 29, 2003, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
She was born on June 8, 1932, in Olean, NY, to William C. and Ruperta (Smith)
Dodge. A Conneaut resident since 1951, she was employed from 1953 until 1994 as
a Bookkeeper at the Conneaut Telephone Company.
She attended Amboy United Methodist Church, and enjoyed music, reading,
gardening, traveling, and being with her family.
A loving sister and aunt, survivors include three sisters, Phyllis A. Dempsey of
Kinnelon, NJ, Joyce L. Dodge of Conneaut, and Denise L. Oviatt of Cleveland
Heights, OH; her brother, Robert E. Dodge of Cleveland, OH; and eight nieces and
nephews, Mark Oviatt, Howard, Michael, David, Jeremy and Dennis Dodge, Heather
and Holly Dempsey; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2004, at the Amboy
United Methodist Church, 554 West Main Road, Conneaut, OH, with Reverend Gina
Kim officiating. Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.

Twila Belle Petro
ENGLEWOOD, FL — Twila Belle Petro, 83, of Englewood, FL, died
Wednesday, December 24, 2003, in Sterling House of Englewood.
Born on October 26, 1920 in Wesleyville, PA, she was the daughter of the late
Leon and Ella (Joiner) Hackett. Mrs. Petro was a long-time resident of Conneaut
before moving to Englewood in 1969.
She was the owner of LaBelle Beauty Shop and worked at the Astatic Corporation
for many years. She served as a Grey Lady at Brown Memorial Hospital and was
active in the Order of Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters.
Mrs. Petro is survived by one sister, Barbara Chislett of Depew, NY; seven
grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and
numerous nieces and nephews, including Penny McMillan of Tennessee, who was her
caregiver.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Zolton in 1997,
to whom she had been married for 60 years; a son, Phillip in 1999; a brother,
Duane Hackett; and a sister, Marjorie Bacon.
A Memorial Service will be held in mid-January at the Christ Lutheran Church in
Englewood, where she was a member for many years.

L. Murphy
CONNEAUT — Richard L. Murphy, age 63, of Conneaut, died Monday,
December 29, 2003, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Mr. Murphy was born on May 14, 1940 in Conneaut, the son of Hubert and Lidia (VanGorder)
Murphy. He attended school in Conneaut and later went on to enlist in the United
States Navy, until he was honorably discharged.
He worked for several years at Union Carbide and later was employed for many
years with the Conneaut School System as Custodian at Rowe Junior High School
until he faced retirement with a disability.
Mr. Murphy was a member of the National Rifle Association and loved to hunt and
fish. He was an avid gun and knife collector.
He liked watching Jeopardy and enjoyed airplanes and also learned to fly. He
loved his job at Rowe as Custodian and also the school students he encountered.
Richard enjoyed making family and friends laugh and loved to spend time with his
grandchildren.
Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Harold Murphy.
He is survived by his wife, Fayda Tackett Murphy, whom he married July 2, 1966;
a son, Patrick L. Murphy; three daughters, Mary and Marc Tisdale of Ashtabula,
Brinda Murphy of Cambridge, OH, and Jeanie and John Sabo of Conneaut; eight
grandchildren, Heaven LeAnne Sabo, Haleigh Nicole Sabo, Kayla Marie Sabo, Marc
Tisdale, Desere' Cline, Sara Cline, Jennifer Cline and Samatha Craik; a sister,
Kathryn Cline of Conneaut; a niece, Michelle Cline of Crossville, TN; and a
nephew, Jimmy Ray Tackett of Conneaut.
Calling Hours will be held Friday, January 2, 2004, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and
6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor Street,
Conneaut.
Prayer Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2004, at the
Funeral Home with Reverend Kenneth Roberts, of the Pentecostal Church of God,
officiating.
