 Evelyn Rudler Loomis
ASHTABULA — Evelyn F. Loomis, 80, 12 East 9th Street, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at her residence. Born in Conneaut, OH, October 27, 1923, daughter of the late Henry and Frances Hatch Rudler. She was an in home caregiver for many years in the Erie area. She enjoyed cooking, reading and watching nature shows.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Norman A. Loomis in 1955 and two brothers, Cleo Rudler and Milton Rudler.
     She is survived by a son, Norman Loomis, Jr. and his wife Connie, Austinburg, Oh; two daughters, Johanna Scharrer and her husband Charles, Erie, and Nancy Carraher, Conneaut, OH, two sisters, Helen Orrenmaa of Texas and Francis Wojtowicz and her husband Pat of Conneaut, OH; three brothers Henry (Hank) Rudler of Conneaut, Rowland Rudler and his wife Diane of Conneaut, OH and Robert Rudler and his wife Jill of Florida, eight grandchildren Normal Loomis, III, Ann, Trudy Julie, Steven Jr., Karen, Chuck and John; 17 Great grandchildren, Nikki, Jennifer, Jessica, Sean, David, Norman IV, Tony, Erica, Kristina, Tiela, Rebecca, Brittany, Seth, Steven, Jr., Michael, Kyle and Ashleigh. Further survived by many nieces and nephews.
     Services were private and held at the convenience of the family.
     The Burton Funeral Home, 602 West 10th Street, is handling the arrangements.

KAREN L. ASHMAN
PAINESVILLE - Karen L. Ashman, 57, died Saturday, November 1, 2003 at her home in Painesville.
Karen was born May 17, 1946 in Conneaut, Oh. She was the daughter of Vivian (Hall) and Hank Whitford.
     She worked at Homestead in Painesville.
   Survivors include her daughter Kelly (Ken) Blystone of Painesville, Oh., two sons, Kevin (Anne) Hooper of Perry, Oh., Kris Hooper of Painesville, Oh., three grandchildren, Tiffany, Gregory, Geoffrey, Ryan and Alex, one brother, Rick Whitford of Painesville, Oh, her mother, Vivian Whitford of Painesville, Oh.
     She was preceded in death by her father, Hank Whitford and brother, Gary Whitford.
     Burial will be at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.

JOSEPH A. PARMA JR.
ASHTABULA - Joseph A. Parma Jr., age 70, died early Saturday morning at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
     Mr. Parma was born February 21, 1933 in Conneaut the son of Joseph and Jennie (Violanda) Parma. Joe was a graduate of Conneaut High Class of 1951. He went to work at the Nickel Plate Railroad for a short and then enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country during the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged in 1956 he returned to the Nickel Plate Railroad. He later became a licensed barber and open on State St. in Conneaut Joe's Barber Shop. He later worked for the P & C Dock Company and retired from the Conneaut Street Department in 1996. Joe was a member of St. Frances & St. Mary Churches and the Conneaut Moose Club. He loved to ride his Harley Davidson Motorcycles. He was well known for his homemade wine making, woodworking and tinkering with things.
     Mr. Parma was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Donald Parma and Andrew Parma, a sister Madeline and an infant daughter Mary Josephine.
     Joe is survived by two daughters Jennie and Lester Weagraff of Concord, Ohio and Bernadette Parma of Lafayette, Louisiana. One son Adam Parma of Mentor, a sister Angeline Fedor of Conneaut ,two grandchildren Joseph and Stephanie Weagraff and former his former wife Mary Ann Ostrowski.
     Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Tuesday 10 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, with Father Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.
     Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Raisian Family Funeral Home, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut.

Robert H. Benson
Robert H. Benson, 68, of Whitney Road, Conneaut, died Saturday, November 1, 2003, in the University Hospitals, Cleveland.
     Born in Conneaut, May 5,1935, the son of Henry C. And E. Marie (Bennett) Benson, he resided here most of his life, except for 10 years when he made his home in Boulder, Colorado.
     Mr. Benson was a self-employed contractor until his retirement. He was a member of the B.P.O. EIks No 256, the Loyal Order of Moose No. 472, The American Legion Cowle Post 151, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Conneaut. He attended Lakeview United Methodist Church. In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking and computers.
     Survivors include his wife Mary (Babich), to whom he had been married for 21 years; son Robert Benson, Jr., of Wickliff; his mother, E. Marie Benson of Conneaut; a step-daughter Samantha Sonnie of Mentor, two grandchildren, Richie and Sara Sonnie, two sisters, Mary Lou Swain of Hilton Head, S. Carolina, and Susan Pfeifer of Bucyrus, Ohio; and a brother Larry Benson of Costa Rica.
     He was preceded in death by his father, Henry C., a daughter Cheryl Brooks, and a sister, Laura Kennedy.
     It was Mr. Benson's request that he be cremated and that no service be held. The Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, is in charge of the arrangements.

 Dennis J. Brisley
LOUISVILLE, KY · Dennis J. Brisley, 49, of Norton, died in an auto accident Saturday, November 1, 2003, in Louisville, KY, of an apparent heart attack while moving to Mesa, AZ.
     He was born August 7, 1954, in Albion, PA, the son of John J. and Rebecca R. (Cessna) Brisley. He spent his early life in Albion and also resided for two years in Conneaut.
He was a graduate of Northwestern High School and received an Associate Degree in Business from Barton Community College in Killeen, TX. He graduated in July from Akron Machine Institute. He was a career veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring in 1995 as a Sergeant 1st Class with 20 years of service as a Nuclear-Biological-Chemical Specialist. He had served three tours in Germany, and in Desert Storm for which he was awarded a Bronze Star. Following his retirement, he was employed as a Lab Technician by Shell Chemical in Akron. While in Copley, he was a member of the Copley United Methodist Church and the Norton Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed hunting, motorcycling, and gardening.
     Survivors include his wife, Terry (Zappitello) Brisley of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Copley, whom he married November 21, 1983; three sons, Dennis J. Brisley Jr. and wife, Harmony, of Crossville, TN, Erik M. of Copley, and Sean R. of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Copley; a daughter, Becky M. Brisley of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Copley; three brothers, John of Chardon, Bill and wife, Darlyene, of Conneaut, and Kevin and wife, Chris, of Kennerdell, PA; three sisters, Sarah Jane Brisley of Marietta, GA, Edla Brisley of Chardon, and Evelyn of Fredonia, PA; his mother-in-law, Daisy, and husband, Robert Hains, of Mesa, AZ.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David; a sister, Brenda Brisley; and his father-in-law, Mike Zappitello. His Cocker Spaniel "Bo" also died in the accident.
    Funeral Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2003, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, with the Reverend Frank Woodrum of Copley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery with full military rites to be accorded by a military detachment from Ft. Knox, KY.
   
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, November 6, 2003, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Copley United Methodist Church or to any retired veterans organization. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.


William W. "Bill" Sherman
ASHTABULA · William W. "Bill" Sherman, 76, of West Main Road, Conneaut, died Saturday, October 25, 2003, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center.

    He was born June 10, 1927, in Erving, MA, and was the son of William and Ann (Bailey) Sherman.
    He was a World War II Veteran and served in Korea and Japan. He was a long-distance truck driver for many years and also drove for Greg Sweet Auto Group, transferring cars for 8 years. He also worked for Conneaut Township Park at one time and was a member of the Optimist Club, the Painters Club, and enjoyed woodworking.
      Survivors include his companion of five years, Peggy Valenti of Conneaut; his son, William Sherman of Lowell, VT; three stepchildren, June Beck and husband, Fred, of Sheffield Township, David Dickson and wife, Renae, of Conneaut, and Norman Dickson of Ft. Worth, TX; two sisters, Helen Walczewski and Dorothy Zakrewski, both of Connecticut; and a brother, Robert Sherman of Connecticut.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald and Kenneth.

 Edgar Lawrence Austin
NORTH KINGSVILLE · Edgar Lawrence Austin, 88, of Amherst Circle, died Sunday, November 2, 2003, at his home.
He was born on July 28, 1915, in Denmark Township, the son of John and Olive (Avery) Austin, and had been a lifelong area resident.
He began his working career as an apprentice carpenter at 16. After his marriage in 1940, he became a full-time farmer and dairyman. In 1967, he returned to the work he enjoyed the most.
     He designed and built a beautiful home in North Kingsville for his family, and continued to build homes in the area, full time, until his retirement.
     His interests included attending auctions and buying and restoring antique furniture. He enjoyed antique car shows (he collected many trophies for the ones he owned) and all types of woodworking. He created many unusual things in his well-equipped workshop. All the kids in the neighborhood loved him and nicknamed him "Big Guy."
      He regularly attended Kingsville Baptist Church and Edgewood Alliance Church.
     His survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Evelyn Lillie of Sheffield; a son, Kenneth of Plymouth; a daughter, Linda Vaughn of Lilburn, GA; four grandchildren, Jeff Austin, Ann Cartwright, and Austin and Taylor Vaughn; one brother, Raymond of Canfield; one sister, Edith Cary of Ashtabula and of Stuart, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by one sister, Laura Sheeley; and his parents.
     A Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2003, at the Edgewood Alliance Church, 3137 E. Center Street, North Kingsville. The Reverend Fred Brown and the Reverend Keith McKenzie, Pastors, will officiate. Burial will be in Gageville Cemetery, Sheffield Township.
     Calling Hour will be held at the church from 12 p.m. (noon) until the hour of service.

David G. Miller, Sr.
ASHTABULA — David G. Miller, Sr., 48, died unexpectedly Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.
He was born on April 20, 1955, the son of Theodore and Dorothy (Lampkin) Miller and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
A 1973 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he worked as an inspector for General Aluminum.
He loved football and played linebacker for his high school team. A huge Cleveland Indians and Browns fan, he was one of the Browns’ “Dawgs”. He loved all sports, enjoyed his family, the blues, and was a great cook.
Survivors include two sons, David Gene Miller Jr., and Devan S. Miller, both of Ashtabula; four brothers, Jesse Miller of Newark, NJ, Jerry Miller of Atlanta, GA, Eugene Miller of Jacksonville, NC, and Douglas (wife Teresa) Miller of Ashtabula; one sister, Martha (husband Vernon) Gambill of Erie, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his nephew, Donnell Crockett; and his parents.
A Service will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2003, at the Peoples Baptist Church, West Avenue, Ashtabula. Reverend Steven Sargent, Pastor of Hiawatha Church of God in Christ and the Reverend Louis Grandberry, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

Bill was born on May 23, 1935 to Raymond and Bertha (Heath) in Conneaut.
He attended and earned his BBA from the University of Toledo. He worked as an accountant, and after retiring in 1985, he worked for H&R Block during tax season.
He was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ and Toledo Zoo. He loved to play bridge and pinochle and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns.
Surviving are his children, William (Linda) Bisbee, Jr., Candace Bisbee, David (Goldie) Bisbee, Jennifer (Richard) Rymers; brothers, Raymond and Richard (Peggy) Bisbee; sisters, Alice (Paul) Hart, Marilyn Jennings; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard Schweikert; and friend Shirley Judy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Coette; sister, Beverly Schweikert; and brothers, David, and Charles Bisbee.

 Delores L. “Dee” Hicks
CONNEAUT — Delores L. “Dee” Hicks, 74, of West Main Road, Conneaut, OH, died Saturday morning, November 8, 2003, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, OH, following a three-month illness.
She was born on May 2, 1929 in Leechburg, PA, a daughter of Fred and Sadie (Tackus) Humphrey.
A Conneaut resident since age 3, she had been employed at Montgomery-Wards in Ashtabula, and at the Astatic Corporation in Conneaut.
She was a member of the Conneaut First Assembly of God, where she had served as Sunday School Treasurer, and belonged to the Women’s Missionary Group, and the Tuesday Morning Prayer Breakfast Group.
She enjoyed quilting, gardening, traveling in their motor home, and taking care of her home and family.
Survivors include her husband, Laurel V. “Larry” Hicks whom she married on July 31, 1948 in Greenup, KY; her daughter, Renee D. Renshaw of Conneaut; two sons, Richard F. Armstrong of Franklin, NC, and Wayne M. Hicks of Pierpont; her sister, Virginia Shepard of San Jacinto, CA; six grandchildren, Scott Smith, Bobbie Jo Lower, Michael, Julia, Christian, and Stephan Armstrong; and four great grandchildren, Dylan, and Brandon Armstrong, and Chandler, and Jacob Lower.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at the Conneaut First Assembly of God, 389 West Main Road, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Archie Strong officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2003, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, and on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.

Sarah J. Armeni
CONNEAUT — Sarah J. Armeni, age 87, of Conneaut, died Monday, November 10, 2003, at home following a brief bout with ovarian cancer.
Sarah was born in Conneaut on June 16, 1916, the daughter of James and Angeline (DiPlacido) Armeni. She graduated from Conneaut High, Class of 1934.
She went on to work for the City of Conneaut as Chief Clerk for over 41 years until her retirement in June of 1977. She was a dedicated employee to the city of Conneaut.
A member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, Sarah lovingly served for several years as the second church bookkeeper and secretary. She also served as the first treasurer of the former Altar & Rosary Society and a long time member of the Cinquanta Club for the Oblate Sisters, S.H.J.
She enjoyed gourmet cooking and was known among family and friends for her cinnamon sweet rolls and cream pies. When caring for children in the family, she loved to feed them treats.
Sarah is survived by her brother, Joseph Armeni, and two sisters, Mary and Violet Armeni, all of Conneaut; her god-children, Barbara Ericksen of Conneaut, and John Zappitelli of Hilliard, OH; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Arthur Armeni (2002).
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2003, at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, 744 Mill Street, Conneaut, with Father Raymond Thomas, pastor of St. Frances & St. Mary churches, and Sarah’s cousin, Father Francis Zappitelli, pastor emeritus of St. Daniel the Prophet in Phoenix, AZ, officiating.
Calling Hours will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday morning, November 13, 2003, at St. Frances Cabrini church.

PIERPONT TOWNSHIP — Richard G. Hayden, 53, of Stanhope-Kelloggsville Road, died Monday, November 10, 2003, at his home.
Born December 20, 1949, in Cleveland, he was the son of Richard F. and Eleanor (Sochor) Hayden.
He belonged to the NRA, and SAAS–Single Action Shooting Society. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and his grandchildren.
Survivors include four children, Rob and Richard C. of Pierpont, and Joseph and Julie Hayden of Cleveland; seven grandchildren, Damion, Alexes, Destiny, Douglas, Charles, Raven, and Lilith; parents, Richard F. and Eleanor of Pierpont; and one brother, Garrett of Eastlake.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, November 13, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 17 North Market Street, Jefferson, with Kenneth Roberts, Pastor of Pentecostal Church of God, officiating. Burial will take place at Western Reserve Cemetery in Chesterland.
At Mr. Hayden’s request, no calling hours will be observed.

Elizabeth M. “Liz” Kukkola
CONNEAUT – Elizabeth M. “Liz” Kukkola, 90, of Millard Ave., Conneaut, OH, and formerly of Jefferson and Ashtabula, OH, died Saturday morning, November 15, 2003, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center where she had been a patient for the past two weeks. Mrs. Kukkola was born May 1, 1913, in Andover, OH, and was the daughter of George Ernest and Florence (Webster) Bailey.
An Andover High School graduate, she had been employed by the Jefferson School System in maintenance and had also worked in the office at the Pember Electric in Ashtabula, Ohio. A Conneaut resident for nearly 30 years, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, Orion Chapter of Eastern Star in Kingsville, OH a lifetime member of the Jefferson Grange, and the Gray Ladies of Brown Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, cooking and baking, and caring for her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Laughlin (William) of Conneaut, OH, Eloise Purtilo (Robert) of Andover, OH, and Emily Grimes (Thomas) of Auburndale, FL; four grandchildren, Debra Latva, Karen Wivell, Ken Purtilo, and Valerie Grimes; six great grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elmer in 1970; two sisters, Eleanor Overly and Mildred Britton; and a brother Arthur Bailey.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev. Mark Berg of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Dorset Cemetery, Dorset Township, OH.

Christie M. Hamper
CONNEAUT — Christie M. Hamper, 28, and her unborn son, Thomas Robert Hamper, died unexpectedly Friday morning after being rushed to the emergency room at UHHS-Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.
She was born May 18, 1975 In Madison, the daughter of Roger P. & Ruth L. (Gromley) Haines and has lived in the Denmark Twp., Dorset Twp. & Jefferson area all of her life. She was a 1993 Jefferson Area High School graduate and recently served on the 10 year class reunion committee. She was married to Joseph P. Hamper on February 18,1999 in Jefferson.
Mrs. Hamper previously worked at the Country Doctor Veterinary Clinic and at Griffith's Furniture. She was a former member of the Dorset United Methodist Church and is currently a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She was active with Bit's and Tail’s 4-H Club. Her greatest love was her family and enjoying the flower and vegetable gardening and birds and animals on their small farm. She loved to cook and bake and always feed people.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph P. Hamper, three children, Kaitlynn Marie, Tyler James & Joseph Patrick, Jr., her parents, Roger & Ruth Haines of Dorset Twp., her grandparents, Robert A. & Cassie P. Haines of Denmark Twp., two sisters, Corine S. Haines of Jefferson and Cindi L. Haines of Dorset Twp., 16 nieces and nephews, David, Michael, Garrett, Michael, Nicole, Gregory, Joshua, Celeste, Andrew, Jenna, Julia, Liam, Stuart, Braden, Austyn & Preston and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Thomas & Martha Gromley.
The funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 10:00 A.M., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 1200 E. 21st St., Ashtabula, with Fr. Joseph Ruggieri and Fr. Arthur King officiating. Burial will be in South Denmark Cemetery, Denmark Twp.

CONNEAUT — Virginia M. Lewis, 76, of Williams Street, died Saturday, November 15, 2003, at her home.
Born in Cleveland on August 16, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alma (Friedel) Schreiber. She resided in Conneaut most of her life and had also lived in various cities with her husband while he was in the military.
Mrs. Lewis was employed by the Conneaut General Electric Base Plant as an assembler for several years and also worked for the Conneaut New Herald in the circulation department.
She was a member of the Penney Camper Camping Club, and in her leisure time she enjoyed walking, sewing, and crafts. She also enjoyed attending Bluegrass and Gospel Music Concerts.
Survivors include her husband, Jack, who she had been married to for the past 52 years; three daughters, Kathryn Vanderveer of Stafford, VA, Carol Drake of Genoa, NY, and Patricia Lewis of Rock Creek; a son, Jacob Lewis of Fredricksburg, VA; seven grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two sisters, Mary Ann Bartlette of Chardon, and Margaret Wencil of South Carolina; and six brothers, Art of Oregon, Howard of California, Bill of Kingsville, Joe, and Bob, both of Conneaut, and Larry of Monroe Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

BAY CITY, MI — Frances H. Church, 77, passed away Saturday night, November 15, 2003, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City, MI, following a short battle with Cancer.
The daughter of the late Edward and Agnes Libera, she was born in Bangor Township, MI. Frances was a longtime resident of Conneaut before moving to Bay City to live with her brother, George.
She was formerly a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mrs. Church is survived by her three children, John and Phyllis Church of Fayetteville, NC, Nicholas and Debbie Church of Conneaut, and Nanci Church of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL; eight grandchildren; a sister, Pat and Larry Ollett of Naples, FL; and a brother, George Libera of Kawkawlin, MI.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Church was also preceded in death by her husband, Anthony “T.C.” Church, in 1980; and two daughters, Linda Church in 1954, and Suzanne Church–Wright in 2003.
Cremation has taken place, and there will be no services. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Conneaut.

 Robert A. (Buff) DeMarco
CONNEAUT — Robert A. (Buff) DeMarco, 82, of Buffalo Street, Conneaut, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA.
Born on July 7, 1921, in Erie, Pa, the son of the late Ferndinando and Frances (Trolli) DeMarco, he resided in Conneaut most of his life.
Mr. DeMarco owned and operated B&B Cleaners for 50 years and retired in 1996. Prior to opening the cleaners, he also sailed on the Great Lakes.
He was a graduate of Conneaut High School, with the Class of 1939, and a member of St. Mary’s Church. He served with the Merchant Marines in W.W. II in the Atlantic, Pacific and Asiatic Theaters, and was a member of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Vets. He was an active member of the Conneaut Lion’s Club, where he served as President in 1955.
Mr. DeMarco was also Chairman of the Conneaut Safety Town Program and served as Zone Chairman in 1956. He served two terms on the Conneaut School Board and was a past President. He was also a former member of the Conneaut Recreation Board.
He is survived by his wife, the former Donna Perkio, to whom he’d been married for the past 57 years; a daughter, Connie Fedor of North Kingsville; a son, Robert C. (Patty) DeMarco of Conneaut; two grandchildren, Jessica DeMarco and Cassie Fedor; and three sisters, Margaret DeMarco of Erie, PA, Carmel Ferrio of Conneaut, and Gloria Ross of Ashtabula.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas R. DeMarco, and three brothers and two sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at St. Mary’s Church, with the Reverend Raymond Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
The Family will receive Friends at the Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Service.

Bert J. “BJ” Williams
ASHTABULA — Bert J. “BJ” Williams, 82, of North Chestnut Street, Jefferson, OH, and longtime resident of Pierpont, OH, died early Tuesday morning, November 18, 2003, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center in Ashtabula, OH.
Born on October 5, 1921, in Conneaut, OH, he was the son of Bert J. Williams Sr. and Anna (Bellinger) Williams and has been a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County.
Mr. Williams was owner-operator of Pierpont Meat Processing for several years, which he started in 1962. He was also employed for ten years by the Ashtabula County Highway Department and retired in 1986.
Mr. Williams was a life member of Pierpont Presbyterian Church, 60-year member of Masonic Relief Lodge #284 F&AM of Pierpont, former member of the Jefferson Rotary Club, member of Percheron Draft Horses Association, and member of the 4-H Cattle Club of Pierpont, past president of the Ashtabula County Fair Board in 1971, member of Pierpont Volunteer Fire Department, and he had a passion for his horses and being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby E. Hruska–Williams of Jefferson, OH, whom he married June 22, 1991, in Pierpont, OH; daughter, Betty Jean and husband Ron L. O’Baker of Pierpont, OH; two stepsons, John L. and wife Connie Hruska of North Kingsville, OH, and Rodney A. and wife Christie Hruska of Dorset, OH; three grandchildren, Ruthella Coder, Lynnette and Justus O’Baker; four step-grandchildren, Rad, Rene, Ryan, and Adam Hruska; six great-grandchildren; one great-step-granddaughter; two sisters, Ruth Carr of Pierpont, OH, and Rose Marshall of Venice, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen R. (Broughton) Williams, in 1990; one brother, Floyd Williams; and one sister, Ruby Mallory.

She was born on March 10, 1945, the daughter of Edwin Joseph and Mabel (Manes) Zellinger, and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
A graduate of Ashtabula High School, she loved animals and adopted many strays over the years. She also truly enjoyed her daily routine of going out to breakfast.
Her survivors include one son, Michael Randolph of Geneva; one daughter, Kim Randolph of Phoenix, AZ; two grandchildren, Amber and Sean Murphy; her mother, Mabel Fassett of Idyllwild, CA; one brother, Joe Zellinger of Conneaut; one sister, Joanne Zellinger of Idyllwild, CA; and one step-sister, Linda Cupka of Eads, TN.
She was preceded in death by her father.

A lifelong Conneaut resident, Mrs. Philip was employed as a State Tested Nurse’s Aide at Whole Person Home Health for nine years. She enjoyed collecting teddy bears, riding 4-wheelers, talking to friends on the phone, and caring for her patients and friends.
Survivors include her parents of North Kingsville, OH; her husband, Joseph A. Harriet L. (Montgomery) Klumph
ASHTABULA — Harriet L. (Montgomery Klumph, 75, of Ashtabula, OH, died Saturday, November 22, 2003, at Ashtabula County Medical Center Hospice of Western Reserve.
She was born on January 7, 1928 in Conneaut, OH, a daughter of Carl F. and Flora (Parker) Montgomery.
A 1946 graduate of Rowe High School, she was a lifelong County resident and was employed for 25 years at Carlisle’s workroom, making custom-made slipcovers and drapes. Following her retirement, she opened a slipcover shop in her home.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashtabula where she served as Deaconess for many years and sang in the choir.
She enjoyed sewing, reading, and being with her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards and camping and was a member of camping clubs in Ashtabula and Conneaut.
Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Klumph, whom she married on July 30, 1949; two daughters, Donna (Ernest) Repp of Finksburg, MD, and Debra (Larry) Schray of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren, Timothy Repp, Shelley Repp, Erich Repp, Melanie Smith, Amy Wood, Jody Schray, and Sara Schray; two great grandchildren, Sabrina, and Matthew Repp; and two sisters, Marjorie Fergus of Findley Lake, NY, and Elizabeth Tuttle of Cuyahoga Falls, OH.

Taylor was a 4th grade student at Chestnut Elementary School and enjoyed riding her bike, going to school, swimming at the beach, playing with her friends, spending time with her family, fishing, riding 4-wheelers, dancing and horses.
She is survived by her father, Edward of Conneaut; her mother, Michelle and fiancé’, Tommy Trainer, both of Conneaut; her sister, Kayla Rettinger at home; her brother, Ryan Rettinger at home; her half-brother, Landen Trainer at home; paternal grandparents, Edward and Barbara Rettinger of North Kingsville; maternal grandparents, Charles and Sheryl Lehtonen of North Kingsville; paternal great grandmother, Margaret Rettinger of North Carolina; paternal great grandparents, Richard and Dorothy Stasiak of Kingsville; maternal great grandmother, Ima Helton of North Kingsville; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

MAULDIN, SC — Richard Anthony Todaro, 63, of Mauldin, SC, died Monday, November 24, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Formerly of Conneaut, OH, he was the son of the late Anthony R. and Kathryn E. Lamont Todaro.
He was General Sales Manager with Chrysler and Ford Corporations for 30 years. A U.S. Navy Veteran, he was of the Catholic faith, and was kind and generous to children’s organizations.
Survivors include four daughters, Cassandra Bayer, Jaci Wheeler, and Julie and Kristi Todaro; a son, Jason Todaro; a sister, Janet Kosola; two brothers, Robert and Anthony Todaro; and grandchildren, Aeriel and Noah Wheeler, Abigail and Zackary Todaro.  Charles M. Suttles
ASHTABULA — Charles M. Suttles, M.D., of Ashtabula, died Friday, November 28, 2003, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
He was born January 11, 1916, in East Conneaut and was the son of Walter H. and Blanche (Hicks) Suttles.
Dr. Suttles was a 1935 graduate of Conneaut High School, a 1940 graduate of the College of Wooster, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA.
Before continuing his medical career, he entered the U.S. Army and served with the Medical Corps in Brazil during World War II.
He was certified by the Board of Internal Medicine in 1951 and practiced medicine for a short time in Conneaut and Norwich, CT, prior to moving to Ashtabula. He served most of his career there, eventually becoming Chief of Staff at Ashtabula County Medical Center, and retired in 1986.
Dr. Suttles was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the American Medical Association, and Ohio State Medical Association. During college, he began acting in theater and continued to act in Little Theater in both Conneaut and Ashtabula. He enjoyed golfing, taught himself to play the organ, loved his dogs and enjoyed training them. He also enjoyed snow skiing with his fellow doctors and, following their retirement, having dinner with the so-called “medical dropouts.”
Survivors include four daughters, Susan Lillie (Dick) of Kingsville, Linda Gaffey (Bob) of Delaware, OH, Marcia Palm (Don) of North Kingsville, and Carol (Randy) McConnell of Ashtabula; a sister, June Janson (Al) of Conneaut; six grandchildren, Rex Lillie, Kimberly Kreider, Aimee Watts, Donny Palm, Miranda McConnell, and Brett McConnell; six great-grandchildren; his former wife, Betty Suttles of Ashtabula; and more distant relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Karen G. Suttles, in 1992.

 Edwin H. Lampela
ASHTABULA — Edwin H. Lampela, 83, of Conneaut, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born January 15, 1920, in Ashtabula, and was the son of Paul H. and Anna (Pekkarinen) Lampela.
A 1938 graduate of Ashtabula Harbor High School, he worked on the carpenter and bridge gang for the former Nickel Plate Railroad. He was U.S. Army veteran, serving in Europe during World War II. A Conneaut resident for the past 54 years, he was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he served as council president during the construction of the church. He was a former member of the Moose Club and Cowle Post 151 of the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, wintering in Florida, playing cards, watching sports, and doing crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed painting, especially of landscapes, ships, and covered bridges.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Wolstencroft) Lampela, whom he married July 18, 1992; two daughters, Sheila A. (Milne) Kahler of Conneaut, and Trudy M. Lampela of West Palm Beach, FL; his son, Jerald E. and wife Faye Lampela of North Kingsville; eight grandchildren, Chris, Paula, Julia, Kevin, Bill, Juli, Dave, and Jennifer; four great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Carole Greenauer of Philadelphia, PA, and Richard Bloom of Erie, PA; and two step-grandchildren, Megan and John Greenauer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth Lampela, in 1989; two sisters; 6 brothers; and a great-grandson.
Funeral service will be Monday, December 1, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Lake Road and Grove Street, Conneaut, with the Reverend Dr. Clyde A. McGee officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2003, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Abiding Memorial of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society. Helen S. Waddle
CONNEAUT — Helen S. Waddle, 96, formally of Center Road, Conneaut, died Thursday, November 27, 2003, at the Villa At The Lake.
Born in Conneaut on June 11, 1907, the daughter of the late Mott and Ella (Felch) Watson, she had resided in the area her entire life.
Mrs. Waddle was employed by Eaton Florist for ten years. She and her husband developed Evergreen Lake and Campgrounds, which they owned for over 20 years.
She was a member of the Kelloggsville Methodist Church, the Ladies Aid of the church, and the Monroe Grange. In her leisure time, she enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by two sons, William Waddle of Brooksville, FL, and Richard (Mary Ann) Waddle of Ashtabula; one grandson, Todd (Cyndi) Waddle of Ashtabula; two great-grandchildren, Colin and Ethan Waddle; a sister, Katherine Wygle of Conneautville, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Miller Waddle, in 1993; and a brother, Frank Watson.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon, Monday, December 1, 2003, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME with the Reverend A.K. Graff officiating. Interment will follow at the Kelloggsville Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The family suggests that memorials be made in her name to the Conneaut Station 3 Rescue Squad, Hospice of Ashtabula County, or the church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

CONNEAUT — Margaret JoAnn Scarry, 82, died Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Villa At the Lake, Conneaut.
Born in Chester, West Virginia on October 6, 1921, the daughter of the late John C. and Doane (Johnston) Hobbs, she had been at the Villa since last April. Prior to that she made her home in Sheffield Lake.
Mrs. Scarry was employed by Bank One for 20 years as a customer service manager. She had a great interest in sports, and enjoyed playing golf and bowling. In her younger years, she had played high school basketball and loved roller-skating. She also had an interest in photography, and enjoyed sewing.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Robert) Anderson of Conneaut; two sons, John (Margaret) Scarry of Chapel Hill, NC, and James Scarry of Sheffield Lake; three granddaughters, Clara Scarry of Tempe, AZ, Kara Birt of Geneva, and Kathryn Rickard of West Springfield, PA; a great-granddaughter, Jenna Birt; and one sister, Jean Frank of Washington, PA.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George; a brother, Kenneth Hobbs; and two sisters, Helen Pinney and Georgia Cook.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at the Church of God, Rt. 7, Conneaut, with the Reverend Raymond Lamb, Pastor, officiating. CONNEAUT — Jesse Reed, 79, formerly of East 44th Street died Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Harrington Care Home.
He was born February 18, 1924 in Iaeger, West Virginia, the son of Albert and Octavia (Blevins) Reed and had been an Ashtabula resident over 50 years.
Mr. Reed worked for the City of Ashtabula Department of Public Works for 33 years, retiring in 1979.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II earning the following ribbons: American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific w/1 Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation, and Good Conduct. He also received the World War II Victory Medal.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, camping and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
His survivors include four sons, Don, Carl, and Jimmie, all of Ashtabula, and Billy of Kingsville; three daughters, Mary Terry of Kingsville, Octavia Frishkorn of Conneaut, and Darlene Rose of Marietta, Georgia; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Laurabelle Reed on February 7, 2003; one great-grandson, Clayton Garrett Demshar; one sister, Lillie Powell; three brothers, Lewis, Jim, and Shelvin Reed; and his parents.
A service will be held 11AM Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula, Ashtabula. Rev. Michael Legg, Pastor of First Church of the Nazarene, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery, Austinburg Road, Ashtabula Township where full military honors will be held.

Patricia Ann (March) Huggins
BROOKSVILLE, FL — Patricia Ann (March) Huggins, 71, former Ashtabula resident, flew away with the angels on Saturday, November 22, 2003, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born on January 5, 1932 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Claude and Theda (Roberts) March. She married Harry E. Huggins Sr. on March 14, 1947.
She was a member of the V.F.W. and a devoted housewife who enjoyed Bingo, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She provided her children with standards to forever live by. When times were rough we could always go to her for comfort and careful advice; never controls, but always loving guidelines.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Harry E. Huggins Sr. of Brooksville, FL; two sons, Harry E. Huggins Jr. of Laguna Beach, CA, and Garry R. Huggins (Carol) of Dana Point, CA; a daughter, Tarry L. Petrella (Ron Thomas) of Conneaut; two brothers, William March (Martha) of Ashtabula, and Chuck March (Willetta) of Amarillo, TX. She also has one grandson, Bruce Holland (Jennifer) of FL; three granddaughters, Trista Petrella-McMullen (Antoine) of Ashtabula, Amy Thomas of Conneaut, and Danielle Petrella of Lakeland, FL. Patricia has eight great-grandchildren, Brittney and Lindsey Holland of FL, Jabreea, Jordan, Jonte, and Jamari McMullen of Ashtabula, Trenton Thomas, and Autumn Windler of Conneaut. As will as a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry L. Huggins; and a brother, Paul (Eilene) March.
A Chapel Memorial Service will be Thursday, December 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville. A gathering will be held after the services at Conneaut Eagles on Main Street.

CONNEAUT — Geraldine M. VanCise, 72, of Conneaut, died Saturday, November 29, 2003 at her residence at the Conneaut Manor.
Geraldine was born September 9, 1931 in Northeast, PA, the daughter of James and Veronica (Mehalova) SanMarco.
She formerly worked at the Lakefront News, Tony’s Golden Anchor, 6N & I90 Truck Stop, Windy Hill Golf Course, and as a cook and waitress in and around the Conneaut area. She was the secretary and former fire warden for the Conneaut Manor Association. She was also a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church.
Geraldine is survived by her husband, Cloid W. VanCise; four daughters, Claudia (Sue & Phil) Warren of Conneaut, LuAnne & Ron Morris of Conneaut; Veronica VanCise of Pittsburgh, PA, and M.J. Summerville of Conneaut; a son, Cloid (Jim) VanCise of Conneaut; a sister, Josephine Scott of Erie, PA; a brother, James SanMarco of Nevada; 14 grandchildren, Charleen Krolczyk, Cheryl Shields, Rich Shields, Jennifer Warren, Jessica Morris, Michael VanCise, Veronica Hand, Jessica Hand, Robert Hand, Anthony Hand, Travis Hand, Charles Lawrence-Hewel, Jammi Hewel, Justine VanCise; three great grandchildren, Brett Lowe, Ryan Beals, and Prestone McIntire; and a son-in-law, Dick Shields.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister Josephine SanMarco.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church with Father Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial of Geraldine’s ashes will take place in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Erie, PA.

The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2003 at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.
