OCTAVIA SMITH
NORTH KINGSVILLE -- Octavia Smith, age 64, of North Kingsville, OH, died Thursday, December 29, 2005, at her home in North Kingsville.

She was born June 25, 1941, in Cleveland, OH, daughter of Daisy (Johnson) Hawkins and James Hawkins, Octavia Smith attended Cleveland Public Schools, graduating from East Technical High School in 1959.

After her high school years, she attended Central State University in Wilber Force, Ohio, with a comprehensive degree in Business Education and did graduate work at the University of Tennessee, University of Memphis, Duquesne University and Nazareth College. During her career she received several awards and recognition's: Applied Economics Teacher of the Year for the state of Tennessee in 1995, the Tom E. Hendrix Chair of Excellence Scholar in 1995, Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1990, and in 1971, she set up the Business Education Program for Bratenahl High School to conform with State of Ohio requirements in 1971. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Federation, Corresponding Secretary and active member and a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She chartered and sponsored the Junior Civitan Club for Kirby High School in Memphis, Tennessee. During her 37 year career, she taught school in the Cleveland Public Schools, Erie Pennsylvania's St. Benedict Academy, Erie Public Schools, Euclid Public Schools, Rochester, New York Rush-Henrietta High School, Memphis Kirby High School, Mill Creek, Pennsylvania High School and Lakeside High School in Ashtabula.

Octavia (Hawkins) Smith married Johnnie B. Smith on August 28,1965, in Cleveland, Ohio. From their marriage, three sons were born, Thomas of Painesville, Ohio; Gregory of Atlanta, Georgia and Jeffrey Smith of Painesville, Ohio. She was active in the church from the date of her conversion to the Catholic Church in 1967. She has served as Eucharistic Mister, Mister of the Work, Church Greeter, a strong supporter and member of the Cursillo movement in the Church and the latest involvement participated as a member of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) team at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.  

Surviving Octavia Smith in death is her husband, loving mother Daisy (Johnson) Hawkins, her sister Barbara (Hawkins) Bray and her spouse William Bray, sisters & brothers in-laws Connie Eggleston, Lynda Bivins, Debbie Smith, Dariene Beckles, Claude Smith, Harold Smith and LaJuan Johnson. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Alexander and Maximus Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, Mattison Smith of Wichita, Kansas, Elijah, Ethan, and Jordon Smith of Painesville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 West 19 Th. Street, Ashtabula, Ohio, starting at 5 p.m., Monday, January 2, 2006, with vigil prayers at 7:30 p.m. The burial Mass will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 1200 East 21st Street, Ashtabula, OH, beginning at 10 a.m. The internment will be at Cleveland's Calvary Cemetery.

VERNA S. WARPULA
CONNEAUT -- Verna S. Warpula, age 94, of Conneaut, OH, died Saturday, December 31, 2005, at UHHS-Brown Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 12, 1911, in Musta Saari Vaasa, Finland, and was the daughter of Henry and Susanna (Myllymaki) Warpula.

She worked the family farm in Monroe Township for many years, and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and belonged to the Adelphi Society. She was also a member of the Kilpi Society, the Monroe Grange, the Farnham Birthday Club, the Conneaut Quilt Club, and the Conneaut Artist's Guild. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, making rugs, and painting.

Ms. Warpula is survived by several cousins, including Suzan Dewey of North Kingsville, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Weikko A. H. Warpula.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Lake Rd. and Grove St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev. Franklin Gore officiating. Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.

THOMAS B. CODDING
BRADENTON, FL -- Thomas B. Codding, former Conneaut resident, age 60, died Thursday, December 29, 2005, in Bradenton, FL. He was born March 5, 1945, in Conneaut, OH, and was the son of Leon and Hazel M. (Carlson) Codding.

Mr. Codding was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had served during the Vietnam era. He had lived in Erie, PA, for 30 years, where he worked for General Electric before moving back to Conneaut in 1995. He had moved to Florida six months ago. He attended the Bradenton Pentecostal Church and drove for Faith In Action of Ashtabula County. He enjoyed working on cars, old vehicles, riding his Harley, and talking about his faith.

Survivors include his wife, Linda (Christo) Codding, whom he married August 18, 1973; his daughter, Stacy (David) Horn of Kingsville, OH; two sisters, Marilyn Jarvi of Conneaut, OH, and Evelyn Knapp of Trenton, MI; his brother, Gordon Stoker of Conneaut, OH; and two grandchildren, Matthew Will and Sarah Polacci.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Clifford Ross Stoker.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with Pastor John Hornyak of the Cornerstone of Faith, officiating.

MARCINE E. UDELL
CONNEAUT -- Marcine E. Udell, age 84, of Beaver Street, Conneaut, died Saturday, December 31, 2005, at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.   :

Born in Painesville, February 25, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Bion and Irene Baird Prendergast and had resided in Conneaut most of her life. She was employed for over 25 years at the Premix Corporation in the Human Resource Department and she and her family operated Udell's Store on Harbor Street for many years.

She was a graduate of Kingsville High School, and had also attended the Andrews School for Girls in Willoughby. Mrs.Udell was a member of the former St, Paul's Episcopal Church, a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She also served as a director for the Donahoe Center. In her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling and helping animals. Marcine adored her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Donna (Richard) Dibbs of Huron, Ohio, Sharon (Marty) Matchik of Conneaut, and Terry (Leon) Wilson of Hemet, CA, two sons, William (Dottie) Udell of Wooster, OH, and Thomas Udell of Conneaut; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Donald W. and 2 sisters, Maxine Burlingame and Donna Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2006, at the THOMPSON- SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street Conneaut, with Pastor Tim Kraus of the Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

The family suggests that memorials be made in her name to the Inn-Conneaut Health Center. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

WALTER C. BARTLETT
CROSSVILLE, TN -- Walter Clyde Bartlett, age 95, of Crossville, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2005.

Born January 2, 1910 in Gustavus Township, Ohio, he was a son of Louis and Flossie Bell (March) Bartlett.

Mr. Bartlett was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Walter L. and Joyce Bartlett of Conneaut, Emery F. and Dolores Bartlett of Strongsville, Ohio, Carroll V. Bartlett of Roanoke, Virginia, and Albert "Bud" and Kathleen Evans of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee; daughter, Eileen O'Barsky of Crossville, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Sarah (Raymond) Bartlett; brother, Donald Bartlett; sister, Marion LaMont; great-grandchild, T.J. Morehouse; and son-in-law, Charles O'Barsky.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at West Springfield United Methodist Church in West Springfield, Pennsylvania.

ROY C. SUMMERS
CONNEAUT -- Roy C. Summers Jr., of Conneaut, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at his home. He was born October 30, 1930, in Conneaut, the son of Roy C. Sr. and Eva (Van Gorder) Summers.

Mr. Summers was a U.S. Army veteran in the 1950s, and worked for Allied Resinous as a press operator. He also worked for Cummins Can Company and Dean Wible Oldsmobile, as a body man. Mr. Summers was a kindhearted man who enjoyed CB'ing, puzzles, crafting, camping, and wrestling.

He is survived by his four sons, Ronald (Bonnie) Summers, Stephen (Cheryl) Summers, Theodore (Traci) Summers, all of Conneaut, and Gregory Summers of Geneva; two daughters, Maryjane (Robert) Slaughter of Naples, FL, and Pamela (David) Daggett of East Springfield, PA; two brothers, Victor (Joan ) Summers of Leesburg, FL, and David (Claire) Summers of Plymouth Township, OH; two sisters, Esther Penniman of Conneaut, and Dorothy (James) Makynen of Kingsville, OH; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Summers is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary (Angerer) Summers, on October 6, 1986; and two brothers, Donald and Harold Summers.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2006, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Pastor Jeff Maurer of Family Fellowship Church officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

LAKENHEATH, ENGLAND - Dalton James Kennedy, infant son of Dale and Misty (Westerburg) Kennedy, was stillborn December 30, 2005 at RAF Lakenheath Air Force Base Hospital.

His survivors include his parents; his paternal grandparents, Bridget (Donald) Lute of Sheffield Township and John (Debbie) Arp of Jefferson; his maternal grandparents, Carl and Judy Westerburg of Conneaut; his paternal great-grandparents, Ruth Ann Falcione of Ashtabula, Howard and Janet Kennedy of Ashtabula, and Lauretta Lute of Sheffield Township; his maternal great-grandmother, Lillian Westerburg of Kane, Pennsylvania; three aunts, Mandy Westerburg, Crystal Arp, and Samantha Arp; one uncle, C.J. Westerburg; and one step-uncle, Christopher Moody .

He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, Richard Westerburg, Dorothy Snyder, and John Snyder; and his paternal step-great-grandfather, Geno Falicone.

A Service will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at the ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Reverend Sandra Dennis, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

BETTY M. SAYLOR
CONNEAUT -- Betty M. Saylor, age 88, of Conneaut, died Friday, January 6, 2006, at the Harrington Care Center.

She was born in Conneaut on September 22, 1917, the daughter of W. B. and Lottie (Porter) Quinn.

Mrs. Saylor was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star Orion Chapter, the Conneaut Moose Lodge, and was a Cub Scout Leader. She enjoyed gardening, golfing, bowling, and most of all, spending time with her family.

Mrs. Saylor is survived by her husband Bruce Saylor, whom she married on September 4, 1938; three sons, Richard (Diane) Saylor of Conneaut, Robert (Beth) Saylor of Stouton, VA, and Jon (Rose) Saylor of Jefferson, OH; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2006, in Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Chuck Graham of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

CORA M. (LAGO) WESTON
RIVERSIDE, CA -- Cora M. (Lago) Weston, went home to be with the Lord on December 19, 2005, in Riverside, CA.

She was born in Kingsville, OH to Charles and Mabel (Cone) Lago and attended North Kingsville School.

She retired from Medtronics, Irvine, CA after 22 years as a Heart Valve Technician. She loved to do crafts, crochet afghans, and sew for her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Marty (Diane) Weston of Fullerton, CA, Susie (Bill) Russell of Moreno Valley, CA, and Nancy (Ed) Baucom of Ashtabula; Six Grandchildren; Eight Great-Grandchildren; One sister, Lillian "Dit" Weagraff of Ashtabula; and many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.

Other family now deceased as well are six sisters, Cora Weston, Helen Hart, Audrey Makynen, Katherine Sposito, Alice Hawes, and Elsie "Midge" McKain; five brothers, Charles, Leonard, William, and Robert Lago, and Melvin "Pete" Todd; and her parents.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at 11a.m., at the Open Door Community Church, 5802 Cemetery Rd, Kingsville. (Off of Rt.193, at Cemetery Rd, in Kingsville).

LOLA L. CAMPBELL
ASHTABULA -- Lola L. Campbell, age 72, of Gageville-Monroe Road, Sheffield Township, died Friday, January 6, 2006, in the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.

Born in Dorset, Ohio, February 1, 1933, the daughter of the late Eugene and Dorothy Melinger Hart, she had resided in Sheffield most of her life. Mrs. Campbell was employed by the former Conley's Department Store and the Algier's Restaurant in Kingsville for several years, and also worked for Premix.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsville. She enjoyed crafts, and was a member of both the Conneaut and the Kingsville Quilting Clubs.

Survivors include her husband Richard, to whom she had been married for the past 55 years; two sons, Dean A. (Karen) Campbell of N. Kingsville, James L. (Cindy) Campbell of Conneaut; three grandchildren, Timothy and Andrew Campbell and Kevin Coleman; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler and Ambria Campbell, and Alex Coleman; a sister, Dora Gene Thompson of Prescott Valley, Arizona; a brother, Allen Hart ofTuczon, Arizona, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Steve Campbell.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. David Hines, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kingsville, officiating. Interment will follow in Gageville Cemetery.

MARTHA P. HALTER
ASHTABULA --Martha P. Halter, age 78, of Conneaut, died Thursday, January 5, 2006, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.  

She was born October 10, 1927, in Akron, OH, the daughter of Paul and Ethel (Walls) York.  

Mrs. Halter worked for General Electric as a press operator for 22 years, and also worked at the White Turkey Drive-In for many years. She was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star Rose Chapter, was a member of the Girl Scout Area Council, Western Reserve Emmaus Community, East Conneaut Garden Club, and Progressive Mothers Group.  

She enjoyed golfing, gardening, wildlife, hummingbirds, baking cakes, which she has done for the past 59 years, and most of all, spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband John Halter; four daughters, Barb (Don) Ertel of Petersburg, W. VA, Sandy (Thomas) Ryan of Conneaut, OH, Peggy (Grant) Bennett of Monroe Township, OH, and Becky (Mike) Bajornas of Canton, OH; her son Rev. William (Sharon) Halter of DeGraff, OH; her sister Elizabeth Lafferty of Akron, OH; her brother William K. York of Milton, FL, and grandchildren, Jeremy Ryan of W. Liberty, OH, Jeffery Ryan, of Conneaut, OH, Nathan Ertel of Tigerville of S. Carolina, Bonnie Helmick of Petersburg, W. VA, Laura Ertel of Petersburg, W. VA, Kelly Furmage of Conneaut, OH, Grant Bennett, Jr. of Conneaut, OH, and John Bennett of Monroe Township, OH; great-grandchildren, Colt Webb Bennett and Katlyn Furmage, both of Conneaut, OH.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

ANDREW J. TRIZNA JR.
NEW PORT RICHEY, FL -- Andrew J. "Andy" Trizna Jr., age 85, Ashtabula, and formerly of Conneaut, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at the Morton Plant North Bay Hospital in New Port Richey, FL. He was born on November 6, 1920, in Butler, Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew Sr. and Mary (Sabo) Trizna.

Mr. Trizna lived in the area most of his life, working for Norton Plastic as a supervisor, retiring in 1982. He once belonged to the Hungarian Reform Church and attended The United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Conneaut Moose Lodge, and enjoyed reading, traveling, sports, especially football, and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Trizna has wintered in New Port Richey, Florida, since 1982, and was in the Shuffle Board Club there.

He is survived by his wife, Evangeline L. (Silbaugh) Trizna; his daughter, Roxanne (David) Orrenmaa of Conneaut; two brothers, Archie (Edith) Trizna of Conneaut, and Gilford (Delores) Trizna of Lorain, OH; grandchildren Monica Orrenmaa of Ashtabula, OH, Matthew (Billy Jean) Orrenmaa, who is stationed in Colorado Springs, CO; and a great-granddaughter, Ariana Orrenmaa, also of Colorado Springs, CO.

Mr. Trizna is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Green.

 THOMAS R. OLSEN
CONNEAUT -- Thomas Richard Olsen, age 73, of Conneaut, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Friday afternoon, January 6, 2006, at his home.

Tom was born in Stoughton, Massachusetts, on May 27, 1932, the son of the late Thomas M. and Dorothy E. (Lindsay) Olsen.

Tom retired in 1994 as a Plumber from the Plumber's Union, Local 55. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during Vietnam and was a member of the West Springfield Baptist Church. He was a member of the Lake Erie Boat Club and enjoyed sailing, gardening, camping, and was an avid reader.

Besides his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by a brother, Frank M. Olsen.

Tom is survived by his wife of 48 years, Leilamae "Polly" Olsen; and five daughters, Robin O. Lamont and her husband, Frank, of Bradenton, FL; Kirsten J. "Kiko" Crilley of Columbus, OH; Kendra L. "Abi" Ferm and her husband, Christian, of Raymond, NH; Saundra L. "Blossie" Castrilla and her husband, John, of Ashtabula, OH; and Darlene I. Dohanic and her husband, John, of West Springfield, PA. Tom is also survived by two brothers, Robert Olsen and his wife, Joan, of Pompano Beach, FL; and Harold "Gus" Olsen of Needham, Mass. He is further survived by seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

BLANCHE B. BLACKMAN
KINGSVILLE -- Blanche B. Blackman, age 99, formerly of West 48th Street, died Friday, January 6, 2006, at Ashtabula County Nursing Home.  

She was born April 27, 1906, in Cleveland, the daughter of James and Mary (Prusha) Behm, and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1965. She previously lived in Conneaut, Jefferson, Cleveland, and Cincinnati.

A graduate of South High School, she married Leon E. Blackman in 1925 and had been a homemaker ever since.

She enjoyed reading and gardening.

Her survivors include her daughter, Marion (Robert) Gohs of Sun City Center, FL; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

A service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at the DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula. Rev. Vernon Palo, Pastor of Plymouth United Methodist Church, will officiate. A calling hour will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut, on Thursday.

CONNEAUT -- Joseph A. Armeni, age 87, of Conneaut, Ohio, died early Monday morning, January 9, 2006, at UHHS Brown Memorial in Conneaut.

Mr. Armeni was born March 19, 1918 in Conneaut the son of James and Angeline DiPlacido Armeni. He attended Conneaut High School and during those years he also worked at a Buick garage in Ashtabula.

He opened Armeni's B-Line in 1940 and then later volunteered for the United States Army and served his country proudly during World War II in Europe. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Armored Division and was involved in the "Battle of the Bulge". Joe was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He returned to Conneaut and went back to work at Armeni's B-Line with his brother, Arthur, who kept the business running while Joe was away. He and Arthur ran the business for over 44 years until their retirement.

Joseph was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, honorary member of the Knights of Columbus #627, and the American Legion Cowle Post #151.

Joseph enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He always took the time to talk to his customers. He was always very supportive of his church and family.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arthur Armeni (2002); and a sister, Sarah Armeni (2003).

Joseph is survived by his two sisters, Mary Armeni and Violet Armeni, both of Conneaut; and special thanks to care givers, Henry (Butch) Zappitelli, Sally Ericksen, and Barb Ericksen.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2006, at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, Conneaut, with Father Francis Zappitelli, cousin of Joseph, officiating. Burial will follow with the American Legion Honor Squadron presenting Full Military Rites at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.

Calling Hours will be held Saturday at St. Frances Cabrini Church from 10 to 11 a.m.

DONATO M. RUSSO
CLEVELAND -- Memorial services for Donato M. Russo, age 76, of Madison, Ohio, and St. Petersburg, Florida, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2006, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 2846 Hubbard Road, Madison, Ohio.

Mr. Russo died Saturday, January 7, 2006, at University Hospitals in Cleveland. He was born October 20, 1929 in Conneaut, Ohio, to Rocco and Mary (Riccardelli) Russo.

Mr. Russo attended Conneaut High School. After high school, he worked for Kroger's in Ashtabula, Conneaut and Geneva. In 1962, he and his partner, Richard McCrone, worked with Convenient Food Mart, as Convenient extended its franchise into the Cleveland market. He owned and operated Convenient Food Mart stores in Lake and Cuyahoga Counties. Mr. Russo retired in 1990 when he became a resident of Florida.

Survivors include three sons, Sam (Nancy) Russo of Cleveland, Dennis Russo of Madison, and David W. Daniels of Sandusky; five daughters, Rebecca Russo of Rowlett, Texas, Connie (Robert) Spaller of KilIeen, Texas, Patricia (Dolph) McCraney of Goliad, Texas, Mary Beth (Frank) Porto of Watertown, Connecticut, and Donna Daniels of Madison; a brother, Rocco (Debra) Russo of Rockledge (formerly of Conneaut), Florida; sisters, Florence Myers of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Mary Ulbrich of New Albany, Anna Brundage of Madison, Rose (Robert) Yonka of Johnstown, and Antoinette Russo of Columbus; and sixteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta (White).

Burial will be in the Madison Memorial Cemetery in Madison.

ELLEN M. BOGART
CONNEAUT -- Ellen M. Bogart, age 89, of Conneaut, died Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at the Harrington Care Home in Conneaut.

She was born August 4,1916, in Conneaut, the daughter of Dr. A. C. and Maude (Holdson) Greenlee.

Mrs. Bogart worked for Dr. Well's medical office, the East Springfield Telephone Company as an operator, and also was a spotter for the Civil Air Patrol during WWII in Springfield, Pennsylvania, She and her sister played dueling piano's for WICA in Ashtabula. She was longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Conneaut, where she had been the organist for nearly 30 years, and belonged to the church book club. She was a member of the Eastern Star Rose Chapter in Conneaut, and the Conneaut Boat Club. She enjoyed traveling and camping with the Travel Club, and she knew how to play several musical instruments, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Nyla Wells, of Conneaut; two sons, Gary (Pat) Bogart of Columbus, OH, and Duane Bogart of Conneaut; two sisters, Arline "Beth" Greenlee and Mary Jane Greenlee, both of Conneaut; two foster sisters, Margaret Mathers of Corry, PA, and Jean Morris of Indianapolis, IN; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Archie Bogart in 2003; her brother John Greenlee, and her grandson, Brian K. Bogart.

Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 370 State St., Conneaut, at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2006, with Pastor James R. Rushing of Twin Rivers Baptist Church officiating, and Rev. Jonathan Singer of the First Baptist Church assisting in the services.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH.

 FRANK GURTO
CONNEAUT -- Frank Gurto, age 72, of Conneaut, OH, died Sunday, January 15, 2006, at his residence following a short illness with cancer.

Frank was born in Conneaut on September 11, 1933, the son of Peter and Mary (Delveccio) Gurto. He attended Conneaut High and then went to work for the former Nickel Plate Railroad.

He enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country until his Honorable discharge in 1956. He remained in the Army Reserves until 1962. Frank returned to Conneaut and worked again for the Nickel Plate and later Norfolk and Southern Railroad until his retirement from the maintenance department in 1993.

Frank was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, American Legion Cowle Post #151, the Kiwanis Club, Conneaut Eagles, and the VFW.

He enjoyed gardening, remodeling, and woodworking. He loved to help others; his door was always open to all his family and friends. He especially loved the Gurto family reunion each and every year.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Gurto; three sisters, Mary Moneypenny, Rosie Speer, and Susie Petrovski; and grandchildren, Rose Best and Adriel Gurto.

He is survived by three sons, Frank Gurto, Darwin Gurto and Darrell Peterson, all of Conneaut; a daughter, Kimberly Angelbrandt of Michigan; grandchildren, Joshua and Justin Gurto, Daniel Oliver, Loretta Teneyuke, Angela Ramey, Frank McMahon, Nathan Gurto, Matthew Gurto, Kelly Gurto, and Joshua Peterson; great-grandchildren, Tara Best, Cheyenne Gurto, Jeremiah Gurto, Cierra Oliver, Katrina Oliver, Bianca Oliver, Caleb Felger, Kimberly Felger, Alyssa Ramey, and Aidan Ramey; four brothers, Christy and Peggy Gurto of West Palm Beach, Florida, James and BAnn Gurto of Wexford, Pennsylvania, Anthony and Lucile Gurto of Montpelier, Ohio, and Pat and Gayle Gurto of Conneaut; and one sister, Florence (Effie) Lewis of Conneaut.

At the request of Frank himself, there will be no calling hours.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church later this summer. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.

CONNEAUT -- Charleen Q. Sabo, age 67, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Saturday evening, January 14, 2006, at her home.

She was born September 16, 1938, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Arden and Arvide (Quimby) Spaulding.

Ms. Sabo was a 1957 graduate of Rowe High School in Conneaut. She worked for twenty years in the accounting department for the NEO Hospital in Madison, Ohio, and had also worked for several private practices in the insurance department.

She was a member of the Legion in Madison, and enjoyed camping, traveling, watching sunsets on the beach, painting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her mother, Arvide (Quimby) Spaulding Patterson of Conneaut; her daughter, Lisa (Jamie) Bushman of Pierpont, Ohio; three sons, Michael Sabo and William (Melissa) Sabo, both of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Robert (Alice) Sabo of Cleveland, Ohio; her stepsister, Mary Jane Jarvi of Conneaut, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Emily, Genevieve, and Leah.

She is preceded in death by her father.

A Memorial Gathering took place at 7 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2006, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio.

Friends were invited to call at the Funeral Home one hour prior, at 6 p.m., until the time of the Service at 7 p.m.

PASTOR ELDON H. HUSTON
GADSDEN, ALABAMA -- Pastor Eldon H. Huston, age 68, of Annville, KY, formerly of Conneaut, OH, died unexpectedly of a probably coronary Sunday, January 15, 2006, in Gadsden, Alabama while on a mission trip. He was born June 19, 1937, in Monroe Township, Ohio, and was a son of Howard I. and Mildred (Graves) Huston.

Following graduation from Conneaut High School, he was employed as a mechanic at Emhoff Motors and Lillie-Holden Ford; progressed to maintenance director at Conneaut Rubber and Plastics until its acquisition by Norton Company when he became plant manager. Following Norton's closing, he helped Plycraft Doors (now Wayne-Dalton) build its new location. While he was plant manager there from 1984 to 1989, he was instrumental in hiring many of the employees who had lost jobs when Norton's closed.  

Pastor Huston attended Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL, and later served the Kelloggsville United Methodist Church from 1973 to 1988, the South Harpersfield Church in Cork Township, OH from 1988 to 1990, and was currently pastor of the Annville United Methodist Church in Annville, KY.  

While in Conneaut, he was a member of the Conneaut Chamber of Commerce, the Conneaut Rotary Club, the Conneaut Area Ministerial Association, and the Council for Dynamic Rural Ministries of Ashtabula County. During that time, Pastor Huston and his wife served as foster parents for over 15 years. He was also a Boy Scout leader at one time.

After moving to Annville, KY, he served as an EMT and was chief of the volunteer fire department. He also served as Director of Maintenance of Housing Development for Red Bird Mission in Beverly, KY.

He was an avid woodworker, and enjoyed computers, gardening, and singing. He was a people person with a great sense of humor, and had a special relationship with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Naomi (Watts) Huston whom he married July 20, 1957; two daughters, Beth (Michael) Christiansen of Monroe Township, OH, and Connie (Robert) Hodde of Wingate, NC; three sons, Dr. Gary and Karen Huston of Albion, PA, Paul and Robin of Sheffield Twp, OH, and Wayne and Kimberly of Monroe Township, OH; his sister Lida (Milton) Maurer of Kingsville, OH; his brother Floyd L. (Eleanor) Huston of Monroe Township, OH; 11 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Doris.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 20, 2006, at Stateline United Methodist Church, 7330 Bushnell Rd., Monroe Township, OH with the Rev. David Anderson, pastor of Gageville United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Kelloggsville Cemetery, Monroe Township, OH.

ELIZABETH PETZ
CONNEAUT -- Elizabeth Petz, age 94, of Conneaut, died Saturday afternoon, January 21, 2006, at UHHS-Brown Memorial Hospital.  

Mrs. Petz was born September 22, 1911, in Provincia di Isernia, Commune di Santa Maria del Molise, Italy, the daughter of Amodio and Carmella (Castrilla) Pizzi. She came to the United States with her family and attended Dean Avenue grade school. She went to work for the former Goldette Clothing Factory, and also worked 13 years at Talarico's State Line Restaurant, running the kitchen. Elizabeth then went to work at Pape's Restaurant, also working and cooking in the kitchen for over 24 years until her retirement.

Elizabeth was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, a former member of the Altar Rosary Society, a member of the Cara Mia Club and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, crocheting and especially cooking and baking for her family and friends. Elizabeth loved to spend time with her family and grandchildren.

Mrs. Petz was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Michael Petz, in 1957; two brothers, Nicholas Pizzi and Nicholas Pizzi II; and two sisters, Dorothy Mucciarone and Adolarata Pizzi.

Elizabeth is survived by a son, Gerald and Joann Petz of Melbourne, Florida, and a daughter, Anita Jones of Conneaut; grandchildren, Tammie Moffatt Miller, Charlie Jones, Michael Miller, Alicia Maenpaa, Jerry (J.J.) Petz Jr., Tiffanie Jones; eight great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Michael Mucciarone of Erie, Pa.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at 10 a.m., at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Thomas officiating.

KINGSVILLE -- Barbara A. Keehl, age 63, of School Street, died Saturday, January 21, 2006, at the Palliative Care Unit in the Cleveland Clinic.

Born June 20, 1942, in East Cleveland, she was the daughter of John and Lucille (Tobolski) Rose. She has been an area resident for the past thirty-three years, moving from Cleveland.

Barbara and her husband, Bill, founded the Achromic Corporation in Ashtabula since its inception in 1975.

Barbara enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren; collecting antiques; going to auctions; and taking care of her brother, Raymond.

Survivors include her husband, William, whom she married April 2, 1966, in Jefferson; three daughters, Kim (Mark) Schanzenbach of Powell, Ohio, Kathy (Phil) Pape of Kingsville, and Kristen (Everret) Carlton of Jefferson; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Raymond Rose of Kingsville, and Jack Rose of Bath, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Service will be Thursday, January 26, 2006, at 11 a.m. at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula. Reverend Vernon Palo will officiate. Burial will follow at LuLu Falls Cemetery in Kingsville.

KINGSVILLE -- Joseph W. Williams, age 80, of Kingsville, Ohio, died Monday, January 23, 2006. He was born January 3, 1926 in Anderson, Indiana, and was a son of Joseph H. and Anna (Warren) Williams.

A graduate of Ohio State University, Mr. Williams was employed as Chief Management Analyst at Ohio State Employment Services, retiring in 1983. He was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy. Following his time in the service, Mr. Williams worked with his father in the family's hardware stores in Rushville, Indiana.

An area resident for the past 22 years, Mr. Williams was a member of Kingsville Presbyterian Church, an active member and former secretary of the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club, and at one time was active in Boy Scouts. He enjoyed historical antique farm tractors, and worked on the grounds and wiring of the Antique Engine Clubhouse. He had assisted in the construction of the Caine Road Covered Bridge, and enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, boating, and computer work.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Caroline (Magill) Williams, whom he married August 1, 1974; two sons, Joseph E. (wife Christine) Williams of Grand Junction, Colorado, and James A. (wife Stephanie) Williams of Sanford, Florida; his brother, Fred I. Williams of Pembroke Pines, Florida; his sister, Anna L. Reineman of Seattle, Washington; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Estes and Doris Warriner, both of Monroe Township, Ohio; and nieces and nephews, June Coover of Bellevue, Washington, Dr. Diane (Rosner) Reineman of Tacoma, Washington, Bill Reineman of Tacoma, Washington, Maryann Schanfish of New Lyme, Sylvia Town of Ashtabula, and Rosanne Warriner and Laura Ross, both of Monroe Township; and 15 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ALBION, PA -- Ray A. Warren Sr., age 79, of Albion, Pennsylvania, died peacefully, Monday morning, January 23, 2006, at his home following a short illness.

He was born September 13, 1926 in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Bruce and Olive (Byers) Warren.

Mr. Warren was a resident of Albion for 48 years, and was employed as a tool and die setter at the former Astatic Corporation in Conneaut, Ohio, for 38 years, retiring in 1988.

He attended the Federated Church in East Springfield, Pennsylvania, and was a member of the Cherry Hill Grange, the Lake Erie Boat Club, and S.O.N.S. Fishing Club. He was an avid bowler, softball player, and fisherman, and enjoyed hunting and car racing.

He is survived by two sons, Ray A. Warren Jr. and his wife, Evelyn, of Crestview, Florida, and Timothy W. Warren and his wife, Terry, of Albion, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Warren is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor E. Warren; a son, Thomas A. Warren; two brothers, James and Price Warren; and a sister, Ruth Shearer.

LELA G. PETHTEL
CLEVELAND -- Lela Gay Pethtel, age 99, of Westburn Road, East Cleveland, entered into eternal rest January 22, 2006, while surrounded by family and friends at Inn Conneaut, Conneaut.

Her death was the result of injuries inflicted upon her during a robbery and rape attempt at her home November 15, 2005. She had been a resident of Inn Conneaut since November 20.

Born October 4, 1906, in Richland City, Ohio, she was a twin daughter of Lawrence R. and Waitie A. (Schroeder) Eller. Indicative of her great sense of humor, Lela often told the story, however, that her parents found her and her twin, Lula, under an old rail fence on the farm.

As a young girl, she and her twin worked at Unionville Tavern. She graduated from Andrews School for Girls in 1927 and was that school’s oldest alumnus. Lela worked in dress shops in both Geneva and Cleveland before marrying Isaac Newton Pethtel in May 1929.

Lela was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Geneva, Windermere Chapter No. 388 Order of Eastern Star for more than 75 years and a member of the Widow’s Club of Al Koran Temple.

She collected antiques, enjoyed supporting and participating in Eastern Star functions and faithfully attended the Eller Family Reunion and other family gatherings in Ashtabula County. She was a lady in every sense of the word and provided a role model of familial caring for her younger siblings, their children and grandchildren.

Strong of body, mind and spirit, and living independently until the night of the crime, Lela was looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday with her family later this year.

Survivors include three sisters, Clouris Arden and Maxine King of Geneva, and Mildred Beers of Westland, Michigan; several nieces, nephews and their children; and her "dear, sweet friend" of more than 60 years, Mildred Snyder of Cleveland Heights.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Clarence, Merrell, and Lawrence R. Eller; and six sisters, Vesta White, Lula Beaber, Mabel Wolcott, Susie Maltby, Ethel Cosgrove, and Verness, in infancy.

Funeral Service is noon Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, INC., Geneva Home, 323 South Broadway, Geneva, Ohio, with the Reverend Paul Marbury, Lela’s great niece, of East Conneaut United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Madison.

Calling Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2006, at the Funeral Home. An Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held after 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Eastern Star or Andrews School for Girls. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home

GARY E. SCHOR
ASHTABULA -- Gary E. Schor, age 56, of Ashtabula, OH, died Friday, January 20, 2006, in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born August 16, 1949, in Conneaut, OH, and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Schor was a graduate of Conneaut High School, attended Kent State University, and served with the U. S. Coast Guard from 1969 to 1973. He was employed for over 30 years by C.E.I., now First Energy, in Inventory Control at the Perry Nuclear Plant. He enjoyed designing and building decks and started his own company, American Outdoor Decks in 1974. He was a member of the Ashtabula County Builders Association.

A Catholic by faith, Mr. Schor was a nature lover and enjoyed whale watching.  He also enjoyed older cars, especially Corvettes, anything nautical, and traveling, particularly to Aruba.

Survivors include his mother Mary (Mecci) Schor of Ashtabula, OH; two daughters, Christa Schor of Ashtabula, OH, and Shannua Crossman of Roaming Shores, OH; a son Jayson Schor of Cleveland, OH; and a sister Theresa Bradley of San Francisco, CA.

Friends and family are invited to attend the graveside service which will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2006, in St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut, OH, on the corner of route 20 and Keefus Rd., with the Rev. Raymond Thomas, pastor of St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini Churches, officiating.

No calling hours will be observed.  

Memorial contributions may be made to Dr. Donald Anthony’s Cancer Research Fund, c/o Ireland cancer Center, University Hospital, 2945, Adelbert Rd., Cleveland, OH, 44106. BETTY LOU NELSON
JEFFERSON -- Betty Lou Nelson, age 68, a resident of Sheffield Township died Friday, January 27, 2006, at Jefferson Geriatrics Center.

Born Mar. 22, 1937, in Bennettsville South Carolina she was the daughter of Douglas and Sophia (Freeman) Freeman.

Mrs. Nelson enjoyed crafts, gardening, and flowers.

She is survived by daughters Michelle (Rob) Price of Sheffield, Rose Shaw of Ashtabula, Patty (Chuck) Worley of Sheffield, and Audrey (Mark) Herman of Ashtabula, sons David Nelson of Saybrook, Dwight (Caroline) Nelson of Sheffield, and Doug Nelson of Ashtabula, 16 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, and brothers Terrell Freeman of N.C., and Douglas, Bumette, Gilbert, and Lester Freeman of S.C.

Beside her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Herman, a grand daughter Tiffany Shaw, and a brother Richard Freeman.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday in the GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 6280 South Main North Kingsville with burial to take place in Gageville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral Home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.
