ALFRED B. SAMMIS
CONNEAUT -- Alfred B. Sammis, age 86, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, July 4, 2006, at The Villa At The Lake, after a long illness.

Mr. Sammis was born July 10, 1919 in Huntington, Long Island, New York, the son of the late Alfred B. Sammis and Marjorie Andrews Sammis. He lived all his life in Huntington until his retirement and subsequent move to Conneaut in 1977.

Mr. Sammis graduated in 1937 from Huntington High School and in 1941 from the Pratt Institute in New York City with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

His passion was airplanes and flying. He often remarked that he felt very fortunate to be able to earn a living doing what he loved. He spent his entire career with Grumman Aircraft, later Grumman Aerospace, on Long Island, designing and building aircraft used in the war effort, including the Grumman Hellcat. In the 1960s, he felt privileged to help design the Lunar Excursion Module that landed on the moon during the Apollo program. He was an active member of the Grumman Retirees Association and was an expert on aviation history.

He loved to fly, and worked for many years building a small plane of his own design. His last solo flight, at age 75, was in his beloved "Hawk", an ultralight he built himself. In later years, he transferred that love to model planes, building and flying a model of the Hawk.

Mr. Sammis had an uncanny ability to fix things. His daughter dubbed his basement workshop "The Magic Kingdom" when it seemed that anything broken would be magically fixed after a trip with Dad to the cellar. He also had a love of, and great command of words and puzzles. He would often finish the New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzle before noon in ink. He proudly displayed a crossword puzzle that he completed using only the across clues - none of the down clues.

Mr. Sammis came to Conneaut almost every year of his life for vacation, first staying with the Tinney family on South Ridge Road and later with the Cole family on Hatches Corners Road. On February 18, 1947, he married Marian A. Cole, the eldest of Frank and Theodora Kent Cole’s fifteen children.

Mr. Sammis leaves his daughter, Karen Matheson and her husband, Stephen, of West Simsbury, Connecticut; his son, Neil Sammis and his wife, Lynne Aldrich, of The Woodlands, Texas; five granddaughters, Amy Fougerouse, Julie Gills, Kelly Sammis, Jamie Sammis and Mackenzie Sammis; and two grandsons-in-law, Florent Fougerouse and William Gills.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marian in 1990.

Karen, Steve, Neil and Lynne would like to thank their Aunt Arlene Cole and cousins, Paul and Janelle Cole, for their extraordinary care of their father during the last years of his life, particularly during his four year journey through Alzheimer’s Disease. Their unfailing attention and devotion has meant so much.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 7, 2006, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio. Burial will follow the service in East Conneaut Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Funeral Home tonight, Thursday evening, July 6, 2006, from 7 to 8 p.m.The family requests that donations be made in Mr. Sammis’ memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, The Villa At The Lake, or Hospice of the Western Reserve.
