CONNEAUT - Calling hours for Luke A.  Petrik, 24, have been scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m.  Friday at Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.  Luke was killed by hostile action near Baghdad, Iraq on April 21.  Time of services and complete obituary information will be announced Wednesday by the funeral home.  The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Friends of Conneaut Creek in care of the funeral home.

 FLORENCE P. CAPELA

CONNEAUT - Florence P.  Capela, age 91, of Conneaut, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.  Florence was born October 14, 1913, in Conneaut, the daughter of Joseph and Louise (Brooks) Capela.  She was a graduate of Conneaut High School, Class of 1931, and has been a livelong resident of Conneaut.  

She was a member of St.  Mary Roman Catholic Church, former member of Women of the Moose, and the Conneaut Eagles Club in Conneaut.  She was employed for over 21 years at the former Goldette Clothing Factory as a sewing operator, and later, she worked at the Conneaut General Electric Base Plant for over 23 years, in quality control, retiring in 1977.  

Florence enjoyed bowling, crocheting, reading, painting, gardening, being outside, yardwork, cooking and especially baking her favorite pies for her family to enjoy.  She loved to take care of her family and friends and spend time with all of them.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Ray, Frank (Dutch), Roland (Bob), Merle, and William; and two sisters, Roseann (Honey) Capela, and Mary Lou (Dolly) Saturday.

Florence is survived by a sister, Jean Capela of Conneaut; a brother, Richard and Martha Capela of North Kingsville, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Jeff and Darlene Capela, Micky and Jane Capela, Cheryl Capela, Ray Capela, Mitzi Kennedy, Linda and Donald Braunstein, Jan and Gene Noller, Michelle and Patrick Williams, Kathy and Ron DiDonato, Becky and James Packer, Karen Simmons and their families; and a sister-in-law, Bruna Capela.  

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at 2:00 p.m.  at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut, with Father John Summers officiating.  Burial will follow at St.  Joseph Cemetery in Conneaut.

Calling hour will be Wednesday, May 4, 2005, from 1:00 p.m.  to 2:00 p.m.  

Memorial contributions may be made to St.  Mary Church Capital Campaign Fund, or the charity of one's choice.  Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

CONNEAUT - Florence P.  Capela, age 91, of Conneaut, OH, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.

 LUKE A. PETRIK

CONNEAUT - Luke A.  Petrik, age 24, of Conneaut, Ohio, was killed by hostile action outside of Baghdad, Iraq, on Thursday, April 21, 2005.  He was employed by Blackwater Security Consulting at the time of his death.

Luke was born in Conneaut, Ohio, on April 1, 1981, to Diana (Petrik) Spencer and John Petrik.  A lifelong Conneaut resident, he graduated from Conneaut High School in 1999.  He was very interested in his community and in government, and participated in the American Legion's Boys State program.  He was a member of the American Legion Cowle Post #151.

In August 1999, Luke entered the United States Army with the goal of becoming an Army Ranger.  In April 2001, after completing the grueling Ranger Training Course, Airborne training, and the Ranger Indoctrination Program, Luke realized his goal by receiving the coveted Ranger tab.  As he did in every facet of his life, Luke served with distinction, completing many specialized training schools, including the renowned and demanding Survival Evade Resist and Escape (SERE) training program.

He spent his entire four year Military career as a member of the Elite 3rd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.  He completed combat tours in two major campaigns: Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF, Afghanistan), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF, Iraq), participating in many low profile combat missions.

After contracting with Blackwater Security Consulting in December, 2004, Luke subsequently returned to Iraq, serving the US Embassy in Baghdad as second in command of Blackwater's Counter Assault Team.  At the time of his death, he was on his way from Baghdad to Tikrit, as part of Blackwater's Iraq Protection Detail.

Luke will be remembered as a man of great honor; of laughter and loyalty; and as a loving son, who honored his parents, and took care of his friends.  And, as a Hero...not for the way he died, but for the way he lived.  He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, and a huge void will forever be in the hearts of those who loved him.

Luke is survived by his mother, Diana Spencer, of Conneaut; his father and step-mother, John and Alice Petrik, of Oklahoma; his brother, Daniel (Loryn) Petrik, and nephew, Jacob Petrik, of Waterford, New York; his maternal grandfather, Joseph Schor, of Conneaut; his step-father, Eldridge Smith, of Conneaut; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Delores Schor; and his paternal grandparents, John and Catherine Petrik.

A Memorial Service will be held 4 p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo Street, Conneaut, Ohio 44030 with Reverend Chuck Graham officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m.  Friday, May 6, 2005, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio 44030.

  CLARENCE D. RICKARD
CHARDON - Clarence Donald "Red" Rickard, left this earthly life on Monday, May 2, 2005, after a brief stay at Jefferson Medical Associates (Jefferson Geriatric), Jefferson, Ohio.  Prior to his stay in Jefferson, Mr.  Rickard had made his home with his daughter, Peggy Rickard, of Chardon, Ohio.  

Mr.  Rickard was born at the home of his parents in North Kingsville, Ohio, on September 15, 1924.  He was the son of Cullen and Mildred (Marker) Rickard.

1n 1943, Mr.  Rickard left High School to serve in the US Army, and was stationed in China, Central Burma, and India Burma.  He received the American Theater Ribbon, the Asian-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and was awarded three Bronze Stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.  At the urging of his mother, and after serving his country, Mr.  Rickard earned his G.E.D.  from Conneaut High School.  Mr.  Rickard always looked forward to his Class Reunions and the renewing of old friendships, and was able to attend the 60th reunion this past August.

Mr.  Rickard began his employment with the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad in 1946, where he initially worked as a steam engine fireman, advancing first to steam train engineer and then diesel engineer, finishing his career as Road Foreman of Engines, the position he held until his retirement in 1983.  In 1976, when railroads across the country were running "Freedom Train" steam engine excursion trips, Mr.  Rickard was the only qualified steam engineer employed by the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad.  He had the honor of being the engineer of a "Freedom Train" steam engine running on the Bessemer tracks from Wallace Junction in Girard, Pennsylvania, to North Bessemer, Pennsylvania.  In the latter years of his railroading days, and into retirement, Mr.  Rickard also worked with the NTSB (National Transportation and Safety Board), investigating train accidents.  His devotion to trains and train safety was a passion throughout his career and in his retirement.

Mr.  Rickard married Patricia Ann Johnson on January 4, 1947, at the home of Patricia's aunt and uncle, Clara and Otto Collar, on Thayer Avenue in Ashtabula.  The Rickard's were married for 48 years before Mrs.  Rickard died in March of 1995.

The Rickard's made their first home on Marshall Street in Conneaut, moving to Parker Street in 1949.  In 1964, the Rickard's moved to a large brick home on Main Street, which was a flurry of fun and activity, as the Rickard's raised their two daughter's, Sharon and Peggy.  For many years, the Rickard's owned a cottage at Harrington Point, which was the sight of many summertime parties, reunions, and fun times.  In 1985, the Rickard's purchased a winter home in Mesa, Arizona, where they enjoyed ten winter's together, and met new friends from all over the United States and Canada.

Mr.  Rickard attended Lakeview United Methodist Church (formerly The Evangelical United Brethren Church), and maintained strong ties to the church.  Mr.  Rickard was a member of Evergreen Masonic Lodge #222, El Kadir Grotto, and the American Legion.

Mr.  Rickard is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Bill) Van Fossan of Steubenville, Ohio, and Peggy Rickard (Dwayne Bargholt) of Chardon, Ohio.  He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jay (Dorothy) Bishop of Mentor, Ohio, Michael (Vicki) Bishop of San Francisco, California, Megan (Jose) Zambonino of Washington, Pennsylvania, and Amy Dorsey of Steubenville, Ohio; great-granddaughter, Justina Dorsey; a brother, Ernest (Joyce) Rickard of Fairview Park, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Louise (Mrs.  David) Rickard; and several nieces and nephews.  

Mr.  Rickard remained close to his wife's aunt, Mrs.  Mae Hill and cousin, Mrs.  Denise (Ray) Johnson.  Mr.  Rickard also leaves his favorite personal health care aide, Mrs.  Mary Wilson.

In addition to being predeceased by his wife, Patricia; a grandson, Jeffrey Donald Bishop, died at age 3 in 1982; and a brother, David Rickard died in 1997.

A "Celebration of Life" Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, May 7, 2005 , at MARCY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio.  

The family will receive guests at noon, one hour prior to the start of the 1 p.m.  Memorial Service.  Private Burial Services will be held at a later date.

Mr.  Rickard suffered from Neuropathy; therefore the family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a Memorial Donation may do so to the Neuropathy Association, 60 East 42 Street, Suite 942, New York, New York 10165-0999.  Please be sure to indicate the donation is in Memory of Clarence D.  Rickard.

GRACE L. CONNERS
CONNEAUT - Grace L.  Conners, age 77, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Tuesday afternoon, May 3, 2005, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center.

She was born September 6, 1927, in Albion, Pennsylvania, and was a daughter of the late Henry and Lillian (Shartner) Randall.

A Conneaut resident since 1957, Mrs.  Conners was a cook for the Senior Aide Program of Community Action, retiring in 1987.  She was a member of St.  Frances Cabrini Church, and enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, reading, and spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Paul W.  Conners, whom she married November 22, 1946; two daughters, Gail Conners, and Sheila (Harold) Peterson Jr., all of Conneaut, Ohio; three sons, Paul D.  Conners, and James E., both of Conneaut, and Lawrence (Claudette) Conners, of Girard, Pennsylvania; six sisters, Dorothy Pintea of Lake City, Pennsylvania, Martha Northrup of Winterhaven, Florida, Marion Downing of Largo, Florida, Janice Minch of Albion, Pennsylvania, Linda Douglas of Hartsville, Tennessee, and Shirley Phelps of Conneautville, Pennsylvania; a brother, Edward Randall of Albion, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Norma Burnell; and two brothers, Robert and James Randall.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2005, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio, with Reverend Ralph Emus officiating.

There will be no Calling Hours.

FREDA M. HERL

KINGSVILLE - Freda M.  Herl, age 90, of Lake Street, Kingsville, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, in the Elyria Memorial Hospital, Elyria, Ohio.

Born in Kingsville, August 11, 1914, the daughter of the late Charles Brydle and Nine McGown, she had lived in the Kingsville area her entire life, until moving to Elyria March to live with her daughter.

Mrs.  Herl was a homemaker.  She was a graduate of Kingsville High School, and in her earlier years, enjoyed traveling, and playing cards.  She also was a member of the Kingsville Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by five daughters, Bonnie Parco of Kingsville, Lois Smith of Elyria, Beverly Spencer of Conneaut, Janice Sanden of Phoenix, Arizona, and Patty Hoover of San Antonio, Texas; four sons, Russell N.  Herl of Ashtabula, Harold L.  Herl of Hernando, Mississippi, Richard W.  Herl of San Diego, California, and Larry L.  Herl of Platea, Pennsylvania; numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rachel Loomis of Austinburg, Ohio.

Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; and brother, Robert McGown.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2005, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut.

Interment will follow in Lulu Falls Cemetery, Kingsville.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home, on Friday, from 11 a.m.  until the time of the Service.

 ARTHUR W. ROWBOTHAM
CONNEAUT - Arthur William Rowbotham, 87, passed away Saturday morning, May 7, 2005, at his home.

He was born March 23, 1918, in Youngstown, the son of Arthur W.  and Sylvania (Whiteside) Rowbotham.

Mr.  Rowbotham was a 1937 graduate of Youngstown Chaney High School and enjoyed reminiscing about growing up in Youngstown near Mill Creek and the log cabin there in which his father was born.

He married the former Audrey E.  Woodworth on Feb.  28, 1941, and they moved to Conneaut in 1945.  He served as an Electronics Technician Mate 3rd Class in the Navy during World War II.  He was employed at the Astatic for almost 35 years as a foreman, retiring in 1973.

Mr.  Rowbotham became active in Scouting as a youth and later was scoutmaster of Troop 15 at Trinity Methodist Church in Youngstown.  He continued with scouting in Conneaut as Cubmaster of Pack #36, committeeman, and district training chairman.  In 1960, he received the Silver Beaver Award, one of the highest awards in scouting.

Mr.  Rowbotham was a member of Conneaut First United Methodist Church, the Conneaut Amateur Radio Club (call sign KA8ZVB), and the Conneaut Boat Club of which he was past commander.  He was a 50-year member of Youngstown Lodge 615, Free & Accepted Masons, as well as of Conneaut Chapter #76, Conneaut Council #40 and Cache #27, Commandery Knights Templar.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Karl A.  (Patti) of Brookfield, OH, Tim B.  (Brenda) of Conneaut, Scott F.  (Bonnie) of Painesville, and Garth of Powell, OH; and five grandsons, Tim F., Mark, Jeffrey, Scott and Michael.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Dorothy Fithian.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m.  Wednesday at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev.  Chuck Graham of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery with military rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.  Tuesday, with Evergreen Lodge #22, F & AM, conducting Masonic services at 8 p.m.

The family requests that material tributes take the form of donations to Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America, 4930 Enterprise Dr., Warren, OH 44481, or First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

MARY JANE GRUBKE

CONNEAUT - Mary Jane Grubke, age 78 of Conneaut died late Friday at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.

Mary Jane was born May 7, 1926 in Conneaut the daughter of Joseph & Josephine Ferl.  She graduated from Conneaut High Class of 1944.  She was a homemaker for years taking care of her family and also enjoyed helping at the Day St.  Inn.  She enjoyed reading and was especially fond of dancing in her younger days with her husband Ed.  They belonged to the Slovenian Folk Dancers out of Geneva, and she was a former member of the Women of the Moose lodge, the Eagles Club and the Polish Ladies Auxilliary.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward Grubke in 1993, two brothers Henry and George Ferl and two sisters Ann Fercana and Agnes Kannen.

Mary Jane is survived by one son Ronald and Karen Grubke of Conneaut, two brothers John Ferl of Erie, and Joseph Ferl of Conneaut.  Five grandchildren Jeff Grubke, Corrine Wojtowicz, Marty Wojtowicz, Scott Rennick, Jamie Rennick and one great grandchild Alexis Wojtowicz.

A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at 1:00PM at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut with Father John Summers officiating.

ALICE SHIFLET
KINGSVILLE - A Memorial Service for Alice Turner Brescianni Shiflet will be 1 p.m.  Saturday, at Kingsville Presbyterian Church, 3056 West Main St., Kingsville, with Reverend Bonnie Habbersett officiating.  Mrs.  Shiflet died November 24, 2004 in Coshocton at age 67.

 DORLAND C. BOVEE
KINGSVILLE - Dorland C.  Bovee, age 78, of State Route 84 East, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Jefferson Medical Associates, Jefferson.  

He was born June 1, 1926, in Kingsville, the son of the late Hardy and Gertrude (Childs) Bovee, and had been a lifelong area resident.  

He enjoyed woodworking and built his home in 1949.  He enjoyed gardening and mowing the lawn.  

Prior to his retirement, Mr.  Bovee was employed by Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co.  as a mechanic, and was a member of Kingsville Baptist Church.

A veteran of the U.S.  Army, he served during World War II.  

He is survived by his wife, Ruth J.  (Loomis) Bovee, whom he married October 29, 1949; three sons, Reverend Brian A.T.  Bovee of Rockford, Illinois, Mark Bovee of Kingsville, and Evan L.  Bovee of Madison; five grandchildren, Jami Mallory, and Marc, Jesse, Jennifer and Jeremy Bovee; four great-grandchildren, Seth Miller, Ethan Bovee, Kayleigh Mallory, and Austin Malachin; and one brother, Gordon R.  Bovee of Kingsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Service will be at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula, on Thursday, May 12, 2005, at 11 a.m.  Reverend David Hines, Pastor of Kingsville Baptist Church, will officiate.  Interment will be at Lulu Falls Cemetery in Kingsville, Ohio.

DEBRA A. PECK

MONROE TOWNSHIP - Debra A.  Peck, age 52, of Monroe Township, Ohio, died at University Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, after suffering an aneurysm.

She was born November 10, 1952, in Austin, Texas, and was the daughter of Frank and Edith (Marks) Koller.

Mrs.  Peck received a degree in accounting from the Notre Dame University, in Cleveland, and was employed as an accountant at the Y.M.C.A., in Ashtabula.  She had previously worked at SCM Millennium.  She enjoyed her horses and being with her family.

Survivors include her father, of Burton, Ohio; her husband, Jeffrey E.  Peck, whom she married March 11, 1989; a daughter, Jennifer; a son, Timothy, both at home; her step-daughter, Shannon (Joe) Spitler, of Mineral Ridge, Ohio; her sister, Nancy Koller, of Burton, Ohio; four brothers, Butch, Gary, and Mark Koller, all of Burton, Ohio, and Glen Koller, of Detroit, Michigan; and a grandson, Blaine Joseph Spitler.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and a brother, Skip Koller.

Funeral Service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio, with Tim Kraus of the Church of Christ, officiating.  Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery

EDITH L. PEASE
CONNEAUT - Edith L.  Pease, age 79, of Harbor Street, Conneaut, Ohio, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Inn Conneaut, in Conneaut.

She was born May 31, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of George F.  and Lucile F.  (Locher) Mishler.  

She had worked for the Astatic Company in Conneaut.

She was a member of the St.  Paul's Episcopal Church in Conneaut, for 50 years; the VFW auxiliary; she was a life member of the Wimarines; and when her daughters were young, she was a Girl Scout Leader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert E.  Pease in 1990; and by her brother, George Mishler.

 RICHARD C. REINKE
WEST SPRINGFIELD, PA - Richard C.  Reinke, age 84, of West Springfield, Pennsylvania, died Thursday evening, May 12, 2005, at the home of his daughter, in Andover, Ohio.

He was born March 11, 1921, in Conneaut, Ohio, and was a son of the late Carl A.  and Harriet P.  (Prindle) Reinke.

A lifelong West Springfield resident, Mr.  Reinke was a 1939 graduate of West Springfield High School.  He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was custodian at the Conneaut Post Office for 27 years, retiring in 1973.  

He was an active member of the Federated Church of East Springfield, where he was an Elder, served on council, and as custodian.  Mr.  Reinke enjoyed boating and fishing, both saltwater and freshwater, and was a member of the Conneaut Boat Club.  He also enjoyed NASCAR racing, and at one time, was a shuffle board champ in Florida.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie (Post) Reinke, whom he married May 26, 1942; his daughter Karen E.  (Fred) Gillespie of Andover, Ohio; his son, Robert G.  (Laureen) Reinke of Erie, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dorothy E.  Joslin; his brother, Donald A.  Reinke; and his son, Andy Reinke, in 1991.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio, with Reverend Rick Plunkett, of Federated Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

 ROBERT J. EAGLEY

WEST SPRINGFIELD - Robert J.  Eagley, age 87 of West Springfield, Pa.  died early Thursday evening, May 12, 2005 at Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut, Ohio.

Robert was born in West Springfield, Pa on June 12, 1917, the son of the late Earl J.  and Mertie (Scobey) Eagley.

Robert retired after 23 years of service from Reactive Metals (RMI) in Ashtabula, Ohio and previously worked as a self-employed independent truck driver and general repair garage.  He was a member of the West Springfield United Methodist Church and had served in the U.S.  Coast Guard during W.W.  II.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Irene (Deets) Eagley whom he married on July 3, 1947.  She died on July 30, 2002.  He is also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Dorchester and two brothers, Howard and Clarence Eagley.

Robert is survived by a son, David Eagley and his wife, Denise of Conneaut, Ohio and a daughter, Sandra Weeks and her husband, Gary of Meadville, Pa.  He is also survived by three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

No Calling hours will be observed.  Private Life Celebration Services will be held on Monday with Pastor Robert Klingler of the West Springfield United Methodist Church, Officiating.  Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery.  The arrangements are being handled by the JEAN EVANS THOMPSO FUNERAL HOME at 11883 Main Street, East Springfield, Pa.

ANTHONY MOSTELLO
CONNEAUT - Anthony "Tony" Mostello, 89, of Conneaut, OH, died Saturday afternoon, May 14, 2005, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.  He was born August 23, 1915, in Conneaut, and was a son of Daniel and Theresa Mostello.

A Conneaut resident most of his life, Mr.  Mostello was a U.S.  Army veteran of World War II, having served in Central Europe.  He was employed as a car knocker with the Nickel Pate Railroad and Norfolk & Western Railroad for 27 years.  He also worked for the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad and retired from the Exomet.  He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sports.  He was an avid New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Shuster) Mostello, to whom he had been married for 65 years; his daughter, Rosemarie (Craig) Gamble of Conneaut; his son, Anthony M.  (Patty) Mostello of Conneaut; three brothers, Ned (Dana), John (Virginia), and Leonard (Ona) Mostello, all of Englewood, FL; three grandchildren, James (Debi) Sanford, Steve (Amy) Sanford, and Brian Sanford; and nine great-grandchildren, Nick, Skip, Mikey, Sky, Kassie, Amanda, Andrea, Selina, and Clarrisa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jeffrey Sanford; two brothers, Joe and Mike; and a sister, Carmel Pizzi.

A service will be held at 6:00 p.m.  Tuesday, May 17, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.

MARGARET E. NICKEL
CONNEAUT - Margaret E.  Nickel, 78, of Conneaut, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center.  She was born June 16, 1926, in Conneaut, and was a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Dudas) Tobias.

She was a lifelong Conneaut resident and had been formerly employed at the Conneaut Can Co.  and C.G.  Wood Co.

Mrs.  Nickel is survived by her sister, Helen (Henay) Castrilla of Conneaut; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Betty Showalter; and her husband, Joe.

MOUNT VERNON, OH - Elvi (Nyman) Laslo, age 84, of Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home.

She was born on June 14, 1920, in Conneaut, Ohio, to the late Gust Jacob and Ottilia Hanna (Raita) Nyman.  Elvi moved to the Knox County area in July 2000 from Mayfield Heights, Ohio.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  

She is survived by her two sons, Richard (Nancy) Laslo of Mount Vernon, and Robert (Ann) Laslo of Aurora; a brother, Waino (Betty) Nyman of Conneaut, Ohio; and two sisters, Linda (Ray) Laine and Estella Grow, also of Conneaut.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Z.  Laslo; and a daughter, Anita Mishka.  

A Memorial Service was held at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.  These services were under the care and direction of the FLOWERS-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME.

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Robert Vance Holden, former Geneva resident, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in New Orleans, LA, from complications of emphysema.  He was 81.

He was a retired Building Services Manager of the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans.  Formerly, he was employed as a Shift Supervisor at Reactive Metals in Ashtabula, and a co-owner with his wife, Pat, of Cooks Nurseries, Geneva.

Mr.  Holden was a U.S.  Army Veteran of W.W.  II.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Schroll Holden, and son, Garth Erie Holden, both of New Orleans; his mother, Bessie Holden; and a sister, Mary Jane Winnen of Geneva.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael David Holden; and his father, Mahlon Holden.  

Services were held in New Orleans.

HARRIET M. DORMAN

HASTINGS, MI - Harriet M.  "Billie" Dorman, age 93, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Thornapple Manor in Hastings, Michigan.

She was born October 27, 1911, in Conneaut, Ohio, the daughter of the late Lewis H.  and Harriet E.  (Ames) Smith.

She was raised in Conneaut and Lakewood, Ohio, as well as North East, Pennsylvania.  She graduated from Lakewood High School, Ohio, majoring in art, and then went on to earn a beautician's license.

In 1936, she married Miles E.  Dorman, also from Conneaut, Ohio.  They moved frequently during their long marriage as his work with Goodrich Tire and Rubber and E.  W.  Bliss transferred them from place to place.  They lived in Brooklyn, New York during World War II, and Billie had many interesting stories to tell of that place and time.  She took these moves in stride, and always found a way to make a new house, a home.  The Dorman's moved from Brooklyn to Hastings in 1945, then to Canton, Ohio in 1951, and back to Hastings in 1961.

Billie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, and Thornapple Arts Council in Hastings.  She was also active in the Artist's Workshop, an art group who painted together during the 1960's and ‘70's.  She loved gardening; sewing; reading; and taking long walks, especially on beaches.  She was a devoted mother, and homemaker.

Preceding Billie in death were her husband, Miles; two sons, Miles E., and T.  Michael Dorman; two sisters, Adalynn Smith, and Amey McDowell.

Surviving her is her sister, Betty S.  Horton of Conneaut, Ohio; daughter Kathleen (John) Crane of Hastings; grandchildren, Suzanne Depp, Michael (Shannan), Kristine, and Lewis Dorman; as well as great grandchildren, Tyler Thomas and Elise Marie Dorman.

Funeral Services are being held in Hastings, today, Wednesday, May 18, 2005.  Graveside Service will be 10 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2005, in Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut, Ohio, with Reverend Chuck Graham, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.

She was born September 27, 1937, in Conneaut, and was the daughter of the late Charles L.  and Toini L.  (Kauppinen) Marker.

A 1955 graduate of Conneaut High School, Mrs.  Soltis was a lifelong area resident.  She was President of Charles-Steven Inc., and was previously employed as executive secretary for RMI, both the Metals and Sodium plants; legal secretary for Kingdom and Hoyt; and secretary for the Record-Findley Foundation.  She was a member of the Edgewood Alliance Church and enjoyed collecting various items, traveling, and shopping.

Survivors include her husband, Jack E.  Soltis, whom she married February 2, 1973; three sons, Eric (Donna) Pollard of Franklin, Tennessee, Gary (Joy) Pollard of Clover, South Carolina, and Steven E.  Soltis of Ashtabula, Ohio; her brother, Charles Marker of Superior, Wisconsin; and five grandchildren, Brian, Kevin and Grant Pollard, Tanner Soltis, and Jayson Barnett.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mr.  Hayes was a veteran of the US Navy, and was an over-the-road truck driver for 33 years, the past 16 years with Agricultural Transport.  He enjoyed being with his family, NASCAR racing, golfing, and was a Cleveland Indians and Browns fan.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Richards) Hayes, whom he married October 18, 1971; two sons, Charles E.  (Trista) Hayes Jr.  of North Canton, Ohio, and David (Catherine) Hayes of Jefferson, Ohio; five grandchildren, Trevor, Kyle, Jordan, Megan, and Zachary; two sisters, Ann (Kenneth) Freede of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Marjorie (Lawn) McCormack of North Kingsville, Ohio; and a brother, James Hayes of Fort Pierce, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Nancy Gibson.

DONNA JEAN CAMPBELL

KINGSVILLE - Donna Jean Campbell, 61 of South Wright St., Kingsville died Friday, May 20, 2005 at Lake East Hospital in Painesville.  She was born June 21, 1943 in Geneva, Ohio the daughter of Jack and Eleanor (Coy) Tenney and has been a lifetime area resident.  She married Austin Campbell on February 22, 1964.

She enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, needle work with plastic canvas, baking and her family and grandchildren.

The family is appreciative of the Ireland Cancer Center in Mentor for their help and support.

Surviving her is her mother Eleanor Tenney, of Saybrook Twp., her husband, Austin; two sons, Patrick (Sonya) Campbell of Nashport, Ohio and Brian Campbell of Kingsville; a daughter, Jennifer (Scott) Johnson of Kingsville; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother, Jim (Linda Sue) Tenney of Talking Rock, Georgia and three sisters, Carol (Allen) Tantari of Conneaut, Pat (Willie) Cole of Albion, PA.  and Jackie (Ray) Manes of Saybrook.  She was preceded in death by her father Jack Tenney and her grandparents, Mr.  & Mrs.  Wilber Coy and Mr.  and Mrs.  Everett Pringle.

MONROE TOWNSHIP - John J.  Houghtland, age 58, of Monroe Township, Ohio, died Sunday evening, May 22, 2005, at UHHS Memorial Hospital, of a probable coronary.  

He was born May 24, 1946, in Elyria, Ohio, the son of Elmer and Edna Houghtland.

Mr.  Houghtland served in the US Army during the Viet Nam era.  He was employed for 17 years at the General Motors Elyria Plant, Utilicon Corp., and was shuttle bus driver from Cleveland Hopkins Airport to Park Air.  A Monroe Township resident for the past five years, he enjoyed his family, and was a loving and devoted father to his children.  He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan, enjoyed his farm animals, and collecting various things.  He loved everything about the Old West when cowboys were prevalent, and sometimes wished that he could have been a part of that era.

Survivors include his mother of Lorain County; three daughters, Kim (Tim) Leap, with whom he made his home in Monroe Township, Stacia of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Renee of Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, Chris of Elyria, and Joe (Valerie) of Amherst, Ohio; a step-daughter, Amanda of Olmsted Township, Ohio; and a step-son, Robert Kirby of Pierpont, Ohio.  Also surviving him are his sisters and brothers, Nancy, Patty, Tom, Ronnie, Donna, Pam, Judy, and Tammy; 16 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two former wives, Marlene Kirby of Olmsted Township, Ohio, and Debra Houghtland of Cleveland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father.

SANTA RAPOSE
CONNEAUT - Santa Rapose, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Monday evening, May 23, 2005, at the Cleveland Clinic, following a brief illness.

Mrs.  Rapose was born September 9th, the daughter of John and Jennie (Campanelli) Ruccolo, and lived her entire life in Conneaut.  Santa worked at the former Goldette Factory, Meg's Grove Fisheries, and for many years at the Conneaut Leather Company.  

She was a member of St.  Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut.  Santa was an excellent cook and loved to bake.  She also enjoyed canning fresh vegetables, working in her yard, and taking care of her flowers.  She loved to read and collect antiques.  The most important part of her life was her family, and she always cherished family time.  She would brighten one's day with her sense of humor, always kind hearted, caring, and generous to others.  

Santa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Anthony D.  Rapose in 1990; a three year old daughter, Rita M.  Rapose; three brothers, Anthony, Paul, and Louis Ruccolo; two sisters, Mary Taddeo and Virginia Incorvia.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia A., and son-in-law, Paul Palagyi of Conneaut; a granddaughter, Ranae and grandson Bob Dombrowski of Conneaut; two sisters, Lena Orrenmaa of Conneaut, Lucille and brother-in-law, Herb Mononen of Conneaut; a very dear and special niece and godchild, Donna and nephew, Jim Miller of West Lake; sister-in-law, Dorothy Arcaro, and brother-in-law, Raymond Rapose, both of Conneaut; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Friday, May 27, 2005, at St.  Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, with Father Raymond Thomas officiating.  Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

 CHARLES A. ELLIOTT
CONNEAUT - Long time Ashtabula County resident, Charles A.  ("Chuck") Elliott, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his home in Conneaut, OH, with his family at his side.

Over his 88 years, Chuck was the inspirational center of his family and a model of a life well-lived.  He never stopped forming close friendships and pursuing knowledge and adventure.  His accomplishments include 45 years with Union Carbide, lifelong community service, and active church life, military service in World War II, and 23 years in the Army Reserve where he received the Army Reserve Medal.  He was blessed with two loving marriages, raised four children, and remained an avid reader, genealogist, and traveler all his life.

Born to Arthur and Mabel (McLaughlin) Elliott in Cheboygan, Michigan, on July 16, 1916, Chuck spent his youth and early adulthood in Sault Ste.  Marie, Michigan.  He began his career at Union Carbide in the Sault at the age of 17 and was active in Scouting there for many years.  A 1948 graduate of Albion College, Chuck was a member of the Goodrich Club and a miler on the college track team.  In 1947, he married Helen Sullivan and moved to Ashtabula, where he raised four children on his own after HelenΉs death in 1954.  He continued his career in Industrial Relations at the Ashtabula Union Carbide plant where he most enjoyed the camaraderie of his co-workers and his role in helping local boys achieve a college education through summer employment at Carbide.

Chuck was a member of Ashtabula toastmasters for 15 years, serving as club president and area governor.  He served in various community organizations, including the boards of the Cancer Society and Family Services Organization.  In his 20 years of service to Mother of Sorrows parish, he was a lector and served on the parish council.  He was a founding member of Union Carbide Employees Credit Union, serving on its Credit Committee for 25 years.

In 1983, he married Elizabeth Dewey Littlefield and moved to Conneaut.  Together they enjoyed an active retirement, traveling widely, volunteering in the winters in Gulf Shores, AL, and hosting their grateful children and grandchildren at their summer ³camp² in upstate New York.  Chuck was known for his inquisitive mind and wide-ranging interests.  In the last decades of his life, he and Betty attended numerous Elderhostels here and abroad, including trips to Scandinavia, the Baltics, Russia, and Labrador.  He became a certified scuba diver and took up woodcarving.  Chuck enjoyed a hand-built fire, interesting conversations, a good game of dominoes, and the company of family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Dewey Elliott; his son, Donald C.  Elliott of Key West, FL; his daughters, Susan and Nora Elliott of Anchorage, AK; his step-son, David Littlefield of Conneaut; his brother, John (Bette) Elliott of Birmingham, MI; his sisters, Carol (Fred) Kneisler of Birmingham and Helen (Larry) Stuart of Niles, IL.  Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kathryn and Robert Elliott of Ashtabula, Robyn Hafner of Kamuela, HI, and Sarah DeAnna of Columbus; his step-grandchildren, Matthew Littlefield of Conneaut, Mark Littlefield of Ashtabula, Michelle Tscherne of Mentor, and Melanie Littlefield of Akron; his great-granddaughter, Tasman Burau of Kamuela, HI; and several step-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Sullivan Elliott; his son, William J.  Elliott; his step-son, Robert Littlefield; his sisters, Jean Kane, Lillian Elliott and Cathy McNichol; and his brother, Harold Elliott.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 28, 2005, at St.  Mary Catholic Church, 480 State Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Raymond Thomas officiating.  Burial will be in St.  Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula.

Friends may call at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, on Friday, May 27, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m.

NEIL L. HOWLAND
EAST SPRINGFIELD, PA - Neil L.  Howland, age 79, of East Springfield, PA, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA.  

Neil was born in Conneaut, OH, on March 12, 1926, the son of the late Walter R.  and Henrietta J.  (Stebbins) Howland.

Neil worked for many years as a supervisor at R.L.  Hopkins in Girard and retired from custodial duty from the Girard School District.

Neil was a member of the West Springfield Baptist Church and was an avid fan of motorsports.  He spent many nights and days out at Speedway 7.  He also really enjoyed watching WWF.

Neil was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Lane; a daughter, Linda Catalano; a son, Michael Howland; a brother, Howard, and a twin brother, Noel; also a sister, Margaret Wheeler.

Neil is survived by his wife, Mary L.  (Clough) Howland; and five children: Ronald Howland and his wife, Marilyn, of Amarillo, TX, Donald Howland of Conneaut, OH, June Hills and her husband, Bradley, of Hanoverton, OH, David Howland and his wife, Cynthia, of West Springfield, PA, and Bonnie Ridenour and her husband, Bruce, of East Springfield, PA.  He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 11 Great-Grandchildren; and three nephews.

Friends and family are invited to call at the JEAN EVANS THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME at 11883 Main Street, East Springfield, PA, today, Friday evening, May 27, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m.  and are invited to attend Life Celebration Services at the Funeral Home on Saturday at 11 a.m.  with Pastor Robert Klingler, of the West Springfield United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will follow in Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield, PA.

DARLEEN C. BOUGHNER
JEFFERSON - Darleen C.  Boughner, 60 a resident of Jefferson Geriatric and Rehabilitation Center, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 following a two-year battle with cancer.

She was born June 29, 1945 in Conneaut, the daughter of Thomas E.  Boughner and Elma E.  (Dalrymple) Boughner Karanasky, and had lived most of her life in the Ashtabula area.

She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1964 and worked for 40 years as a nurses aid, retiring in 2003.  She enjoyed listening to southern gospel and classical music.  She loved to play the organ and making stationary and cards on her computer for her friends.  She also enjoyed doing ceramics and loved to read.  Her dog "Patches" was the love of her life.

She is survived by a stepson, Kevin Throop of Colorado; a stepbrother, Jim Karanasky of Ashtabula; a stepsister, Janice DeHaven of Pennsylvania; two step grandsons, Eric and Dane Throop and nieces and one grandniece.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas R.  Boughner; a stepbrother, John Karanasky, Jr; a niece; a nephew and one step granddaughter.

Per her wishes to be cremated, there will be no calling hours but a Graveside Service will be Wednesday at East Conneaut Cemetery on Furnace Road in Conneaut with Rev.  Kenneth Roberts of the Pentecostal Church of God officiating.

She asked for no flowers but donations can be made to the Cancer Fund or Kidney Foundation in her name.

The ROSS-BILLMAN FUNERAL HOME, 526 W.  Prospect Road, Ashtabula is in charge of arrangements.

EITHEL TENNANT
MONROE TWP - Eithel Tennant, age 81, of Monroe Township, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.

She was born November 28, 1923, in Lima, West Virginia, and was a daughter of the late William E.  and Viola (Bunting) Spencer.

An area resident for more than 50 years, Mrs.  Tennant was a homemaker and enjoyed baking, flower gardening, quilting, crocheting, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Stanley) Read of Conneaut, Ohio; four sons, William (Janice), Larry P.  (DeAnna), Ronald R., and Ronald L.  (Karen) Tennant, all of Conneaut, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.  Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Ruth Tennant, and Freeda Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lonnie A.  Tennant in 1996; a granddaughter, Heather Lynn Tennant in infancy; three sisters; and five brothers.

Private Funeral Service will be held at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio, with the Reverend Jerry Webb, Pastor of Kelloggsville Church of The Nazarene, officiating.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

RODNEY V. HALE
MONROE TWP - Rodney V.  "Hotrod" Hale, age 51, of Monroe Township, Ohio, died Monday morning, May 30, 2005, at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born August 21, 1953, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and was a son of the late Norval and Virginia (O'Rielly) Hale.

Mr.  Hale was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during the Viet Nam Era.  An area resident since 1982, he was employed at Zehrco, Lukjan, and most recently, owned and operated R & J Sports.  He attended the Conneaut First Assembly of God, and enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

He is survived by his wife, Jill Tsepelis Hale, whom he married February 14, 1980; his daughter, Bridgett (Chris) Stiltner of Conneaut, Ohio; two sons, Nathan K.  (Sara) Hale, and Brandon M.  (Brittany) Hale, all of Conneaut; and three grandchildren, Hunter Stiltner, Hannah Stiltner, and Paige Hale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Allen, and Chuck Hale; and his sister, Shirleen Hale.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 2, 2005, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, Ohio, with the Reverend Andrew Warren, Pastor of First Assembly of God, officiating.  Burial will be in Kelloggsville Cemetery, Monroe Township.

Calling Hours for friends will be on Wednesday, from 7-9 p.m.  at the Funeral Home.  Envelopes for contributions to the family will be available at the Funeral Home.

HELEN E. ARMSTRONG
PIERPONT - Helen E.  Armstrong, age 68, of Pierpont, died unexpectedly May 25, 2005, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.

Helen was born December 4, 1936, the daughter of John and Lila Fenton Clark.  She was a homemaker most of her life, raising her family.

She also was the former owner of the Starlite and Shooting Stars Dance and Drill Team for many years.  She enjoyed baking, crafts and painting, designing artifical flower and planters.  She loved to sing and was an animal enthusiast with her love of cats, dogs and horses.  Helen was a member of the Kellogsville Church of The Nazarene.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, John E.  and Jeff Armstrong; two sisters, Ida Rae Jones, and Faye Clark; and a granddaughter, Kira Jones.

She is survived by her husband, John I.  Armstrong, whom she married December 31, 1955; two sons, Ronald Armstrong of Conneaut, and Donald and Traci Armstrong of Conneaut; two daughters, Susan Armstrong of Monroe, and Debra Armstrong of Conneaut; a brother, John H.  Clark of Utah; a sister Frances Armstrong of Conneaut; half sister, Blanch Norton of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Daniel James, Kristina Marie, Lori Lynn, Billy, Jackie, Tyler, and Amanda; and her favorite dog "Hope Destiny".

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Kellogsville Cemetery, with Reverend Jerry Webb, of the Kellogsville Church of The Nazarene, officiating.  Burial will follow.

RHONDA L. MANNIKO
CONNEAUT - Rhonda L.  Manniko, age 44, of Clinton Avenue, died Monday, May 30, 2005, in the Hospice Unit of the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

 MARK A. BERTOLOTTI
JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Mark A.  Bertolotti, age 50, of Jefferson City, Missouri, died Sunday, May 22, 2005.  

He was born September 4, 1954, in Conneaut, Ohio, a son of E.  A.  "Chili" and Eleanor Bertolotti.

He was a 1973 graduate of Conneaut High School and served in the US Navy.  He and his family resided in Jefferson City, Missouri, and he worked in the construction trade.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.  They vacationed in Conneaut every summer where his whole family enjoyed staying and playing on the shores of Lake Erie.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Bertolotti; two daughters, Ashley J.  Bertolotti, and Carrie E.  Bertolotti, all of Jefferson City, Missouri; his mother Eleanor Nierzejewski of Ashtabula, Ohio; his brother, Chris Bertolotti of Conneaut; four sisters, Cyndi Bertolotti Clark of Columbus, Ohio, Darla Korkhill of Dallas, Texas, Kim Haney of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lori Carpenter of Jefferson, Ohio.  

He was preceded in death by his father, E.  A.  "Chili" Bertolotti of Conneaut.

Graveside Service will be held 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 2, 2005, in East Conneaut Cemetery, with the Reverend Chuck Graham, Pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.
