LINDA YOUNG
CHICAGO, IL -- Linda Gates Young, who lived the past 35 years in Chicago, IL, fought a brave 14-month battle against cancer and passed away at Northwestern Hospital on Sunday, October 30, 2005. She was born August 3,1946, in Conneaut, Ohio.

Linda was an initial planner of and helped launch the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) in 1973. CBOE was the first U.S. options exchange, and she became one of the first women to own a CBOE seat. She left brokering when she sold her CBOE seat in the mid 1980's. She then began working in the Cook County capital planning department, where she was employed at the time of her passing. She had originally moved to Chicago in the 1960s, going to work for Northern Trust.

Linda was active in Chicago's Democratic Party as a precinct captain.

She loved living in Chicago and being close to the water. Growing up on the shores of Lake Erie, and then her later proximity to Lake Michigan, nurtured her love for open waters and led her to learn how to sail. She loved to spend days sailing up to northern Michigan, particularly to Traverse City, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. Linda was an accomplished cook, and her sailing companions relished her galley-prepared meals.

Combining her love for travel, water and her ancestral history, she visited Ireland two times. Her favorite quote was: "Life is either a great adventure, or it's nothing at all."

In Conneaut, Linda attended grades K-12. She had been a political science student at Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio.

Steve Bailen, her brother-in-law, summed up what all those close to Linda feel: "She was the best of the best. You really get to know people on a sailboat, and when we sailed with Linda you appreciated even more what a kind and loving human being she was to everyone she met."
