Obituaries - Star Beacon July 1, 2004

 William H. Gerdes

CONNEAUT — William Harry Gerdes, age 77, died of melanoma at his home on Cummins Avenue in Conneaut, OH, on Tuesday, June 29, 2004.

He was born in New Kensington, PA, on October 28, 1926, the son of William Henry Gerdes and Grace Harvey Gerdes. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 - 1946, and married Viola Lucas in 1949. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh College of Pharmacy in 1951.

Bill came to Conneaut in 1955 and worked as a pharmacist at Crombie’s Pharmacy, which he later bought and renamed Gerdes Pharmacy, and owned for 27 years. He continued to work part-time until earlier this year.

Bill was truly active and engaged in his work, not only for professional satisfaction, but for the opportunity to be of service to others and for the personal relationships with his customers and friends he made through his work.

Bill enjoyed tennis, fishing, skiing, bridge, and dancing, and his biggest loves were spending time with his family and working on his home and yard. He was also a terrific baker, and his breads, pies, and chocolate chip cookies were known far and wide.

Bill was an active community leader. He served on numerous committees and was involved in many activities at the First United Methodist Church. He was a very active member and past-president of Rotary Club. Along with his wife, Vi, he was the Conneaut CO-Citizen of the Year in 1993. He was a member of various pharmacy professional organizations. Other community activities included: Trustee of the Record Foundation; former member of Jaycee’s, and recipient of the Jaycee’s Distinguished Service Award for Community Service; member of American Legion Cowle Post #151; Downtown Revitalization Committee; Chairman of Cancer Crusade-Conneaut; Chamber of Commerce; Kent State Ashtabula College Committee; past Chairman of United Way-Conneaut; past Director of the Northeastern Ohio National Bank; CO-chair of city wide Sabin Polio Vaccine Program; member of the Board of Youth Services; and former Cubmaster.

Survivors include his wife, Vi of Conneaut, OH; three sons, Jeffrey Scott Gerdes of Bryn Mawr, PA, Kerry William Gerdes of Conneaut, OH and Robert James Gerdes of Hubbard, OH; nine grandchildren, Erica, Elizabeth, Calpin, Jennifer, Scott, Alex, Abby, Adam and Hannah; and his brother, Thomas Gerdes of Pittsburgh, PA. Bill also loved his daughters-in-law, Marsha, Janet and Tena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Gerdes.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2004, at First United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Chuck Graham officiating. A luncheon will follow the service in Fellowship Hall.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., today, Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the Church and at the Funeral Home.

 

Obituaries - Star Beacon July 6, 2004

William L. Bishop

ASHTABULA — William L. Bishop, 80, died Monday, July 5, 2004 at Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was Born on June 14, 1924 in Apollo, Pa. to Merril B. Bishop and Zelda Pearl (Kettering) Bishop.

Mr. Bishop has resided in Ashtabula County for the last 79 years. Mr. Bishop entered the army just before graduation from Conneaut High School in 1942. He served in the Pacific during W.W.II as a medic assigned to a tank group. He was honorably discharged on January 30, 1945.

Mr. Bishop started with the Conneaut Police Department on December 1, 1945. He held positions as Patrolman, Sergeant and Captain. He retired from the Police Department in March of 1976. He enjoyed his police work, especially the time he spent as the cities juvenile officer. Mr. Bishop also worked part time then full time for the Conneaut Telephone Co. He retired from there in 1983. Mr. Bishop was a member of the Korean Church of Ashtabula. He taught Sunday school from 1982 to 1986.

He is survived by his wife Wonsuk, who he married in 1982. Sons; Robert L. (Earlinda), Naples Fl., Thomas F., N.Kingsville and Philip L.(Tina) Bishop of Austinburg. Daughter; Susan Golding (Andy), of Perry Ohio. 7 Grand children and 10 Great Grand Children.

Preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert L., A B-25 pilot killed in W.W.II. A sister Maryanna Dodge and his first wife Charlotte (Steele)

 Wallace Wolf

ERIE, PA. — Wallace "Wally" Wolf, 56, of 143 Andrews Park Boulevard, died accidentally Friday, July 2,2004.

He was born August 26,1948 in Ashtabula, Ohio son of Doris Jones Wolf Campbell Ashtabula, Ohio and the late Wilber E. Wolf. He lived in Erie most of his life.

He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

He had worked for Keystone Waste; prior to that he had worked for Waste Management.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harborcreek, where he served as a deacon there.

He was a member of the Moose Club and enjoyed camping.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Yakowelloff Wolf; a brother, Wilber Wolf and a sister, Shirley Terry.

He is survived by Three daughters Jodie Forward and her husband, Todd of Ft Carson, Colorado; Michelle Hannoud of Conneaut, Ohio; Becky Beddows and her husband, Mark of Kissimmee, Florida; Two stepdaughters, Shannon Weekley and her husband, Richard of Erie; Leeann Pier and her husband, Jim of Erie; Two stepsons, Robert Davis of Erie; Brian Davis of Erie; Two brothers Charles Wolf of Ashtabula, Ohio; James Wolf of Conneaut, Ohio; Three sisters, Hattie Atsman of Conneaut, Ohio; Betty Cartner of Utah; Carol Barton of Ashtabula, Ohio, He is also survived by 14 grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call at The John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, Wednesday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there Thursday at 10 a.m. with Reverend Anne Horton officiating.

Burial will be at Erie County Memorial Gardens.
 

 Arvin A. Rumer

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Arvin A. Rumer, age 71, of Dickenson Road, Ashtabula Township, died Saturday evening, July 3, 2004, in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born April 4, 1933 in Englon, WV, the son of Gilbert and Idella (Harsh) Rumer and has been a resident of the Ashtabula area since 1955, coming from Thomas, WV. Mr. Rumer was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was married to Lucy M. Porter on May 20, 1955 in Cumberland, MD.

Mr. Rumer was a 23-year employee of the East Ohio Gas Company, retiring in 1981.

He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan, he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, yardwork, and leathercraft. He played the mandolin and loved playing bluegrass music with friends. He mostly enjoyed his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy M. Rumer; three children, Diane L. Rumer of Ashtabula, Gregg A. (Yvonne) Rumer of Conneaut and Kevin D. (Sandra) Rumer of Ashtabula; three grandchildren, Michael B. Szabo of Defiance, Sierra R. Rumer of Conneaut and Amanda N. Rumer of Ashtabula; and four siblings, Alvin E. Rumer of Petersburg, WV, Donna A. Riggleman of Cabin, WV, Evelyn K. Simmons of Abington, VA and Glenn N. Rumer of Glen Burnie, MD.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the FLEMING FUNERAL HOME, INC., 49 West Jefferson Street, Jefferson, OH, with the Reverend Kenneth Roberts, of the Pentecostal Church of God, and the Reverend Duane Ball, of Harvest International Church, officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

 Vida O. Zullo

ASHTABULA — Vida O. Zullo, age 81, of the Ashtabula Towers, Ashtabula, OH, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at the Austinburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

She was born July 12, 1922 in Conneaut, the daughter of Eli Verlin and Emily (Reese) Lawrence and has been a lifetime area resident. She was a 1940 graduate of Kingsville High School.

Mrs. Zullo had been employed by First Federal Bank, T & H Restaurant, Sealtest Milk Company and she retired from the Lakeway Restaurant in Ashtabula.

She is a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church; she had also been a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader.

She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, golfing and bowling.

Surviving her is her daughter, Sandra (Walter) Saari of Saybrook; three grandchildren, David (Denise) Saari, Carl (Jamie) Saari and Tina (Bill) Buser; two great-grandchildren, twins, Aaron and Andrew; and her twin brother, Verlin Lawrence of Kingsville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Warren Kellogg; her second husband, Cosmo Zullo; a son, Warren Kellogg; five brothers, Warren, Earl, Sylvan, Orvel and Adrian Lawrence; and four sisters, Elsie Osborn, Hazel Edith Rutter, Mildred Blenman and Hilda Lawrence.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, July 8, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 4901 Main Avenue, Ashtabula, with Reverend Barbara Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Saybrook Township.

 Ardith L. Teachout

GENEVA — Ardith L. Teachout, age 77, of Cromwell Street, Geneva, OH, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at her home.

Born May 16, 1927 in Fostoria, OH, she was a daughter of Otto P. and Nora H. (Updegraff) Smith and was a 56-year resident of Geneva.

Mrs. Teachout married Ralph A. Teachout on June 21, 1947 in Fostoria, OH.

She was a Kitchen Assistant at Geneva Health Care for 8 years and worked in Geneva Hospital’s Kitchen for 12 years.

She was a member of Geneva Church of the Nazarene. She also enjoyed cats and loved to collect them.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann (Kenny) Johnson of Clearwater, FL and Barb (Garnett) Light of Geneva; one son, Tom (Shelly) Teachout of Ashtabula; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a sister, Mary Hemminger.

Graveside Service will be 10 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2004, at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH, with Reverend Shirley Deemer, of the Geneva Church of the Nazarene, officiating.

Raymond D. Clute

PAINESVILLE — (Jim) Raymond Dale Clute, age 86, of Painesville, OH, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Mentor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mentor, OH.

Born August 24, 1917, in Kelloggsville, he was a son of the late Arch and Mary Edna Clute and was a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County. He was married to Ruth Arlene Clute Henry.

Mr. Clute was a Commercial Fisherman for MiggsGro, working out of the Harbor of Conneaut.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching wrestling, and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his former wife, Ruth; sons, Rodney of Bangor, ME, and Terry of Florida; daughters, Constance McKenney of Painesville, and Diana Taylor of Willoughby; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Hubert Raymond; daughter, Carol Turner; sister, Ilene Morrison; and grandchild, Calvin (Hud) Turner.

Funeral Service will be 12 p.m. (noon), Monday, July 12, 2004, at the BURTON FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, OH, with Reverend Fred Schmidt officiating. Burial will take place at Kelloggsville Cemetery.

David R. Shank III

COLUMBUS — Former Conneaut, OH, resident, David R. “D.R.” Shank III, age 30, of Columbus, OH, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Mt. Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, where he had been a patient since Saturday.

He was born August 26, 1973 in Conneaut, OH, and was a son of David R. Shank, Jr. and Kathryn (Hoagland) Hawn.

A 1991 graduate of Conneaut High School, Mr. Shank was a brick layer employed by Ohio Masonry.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, boating, and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his parents, Kathryn and David Hawn of Conneaut, OH and David and Ranae Shank of North Kingsville, OH; his sister, Stacie Shank, her son, D.R.’s nephew, Quinn Rudler, and her fiancé, Shawn Brink, all of Conneaut, OH; a step-sister, Heather Hawn of Sarasota, FL; a step-brother, Charles Hawn of Conneaut, OH; son, Tanner Shank, and Tanner’s mother, Melissa Mott, both of Conneaut, OH; his paternal grandmother, Thelma Shank of Conneaut, OH; and his maternal grandfather, John Hoagland of Conneaut, OH.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, David R. Shank, Sr.; and his maternal grandmother, Marian (Beard) Hoagland.

CONNEAUT — Helen R. Rossick, age 81, of Conneaut, OH, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center.

She was born September 17, 1922 in Conneaut, OH, and was a daughter of Oscar and Ida (Sundberg) Maukonen.

She was a 1940 graduate of Conneaut High School, and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Mrs. Rossick enjoyed her family, especially attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include her daughter, Katie (Jerry) Lane of Conneaut, OH; two sons, Harold “Buddy” (Carol) Rossick of South Windsor, CT and Robert (Sally) Rossick of Conneaut, OH; six grandchildren, Christopher Rossick, Jennifer Rossick, Bobbie Jo Smith, Brian Rossick, Aaron Lane and Sabrina Lane; and four great-grandchildren, Samantha Lane, Nathaniel Lane, Robbie Rossick and Savannah Rossick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert K. Rossick in 1999; a son, Bruce in infancy; and her brother, Donald Maukonen.

Adelbert W. Lillie

CONNEAUT — Adelbert “Del” W. Lillie, age 79, of Conneaut, OH, died Friday morning, July 9, 2004, at his home.

He was born January 24, 1925, in Conneaut, OH, a son of Willis A. and Clara (Siewert) Lillie.

Mr. Lillie was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of American Legion Cowle Post #151, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He retired in 1983 as Plant Supervisor of Elkem Metals.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Elks Lodge in McAllen, TX.

He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Mission, TX, golfing, bowling, dancing, gardening, and chair weaving.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Martha (Niemi) Lillie; his daughter, Selene E. (Roy) Bean of North Kingsville, OH; his son, Kurt E. (Sharon) Lillie of Kingsville, OH; three grandchildren, Jason Bean, Lisa Moxley and Devin Lillie; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Lillie and Hannah Moxley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Evelyn Morris and Lenora Kobenik.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Dr. Clyde A. McGee, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating.

Mary F. Sava

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Mary Frances Sava, age 58, a resident of Kingsville Township, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at the Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA.

Born January 6, 1946, in Cleveland, OH, she was the daughter of Ernest and Carol (Aleshire) Lowden.

Mrs. Sava worked at Orlando’s Golden Dawn in North Kingsville. She was also a seamstress and loved to sew and cook.

She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Sava Sr. of Kingsville; daughters, Rhonda Kilian of Georgia, Bonnie Dugan of Painesville, Nichole Schafer (Jeffery) of South Euclid, and Amanda Alar (David) of Houston, TX; sons, James Hutson of Lakewood and Robert H. Sava Jr. of Lakewood; grandchildren, April, Erin, Erika, William, Jeremiah, Gabrielle, Michael, Olivia, Sydney and Logan; great-grandchild, Martin; and a sister, Elizabeth Jacobs of Levittsburg, OH.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and grandchildren, Noah Hutson and Patrick Dugan.

Harry W. Olin

PIERPONT — Harry W. Olin, age 82, of Route 167, Pierpont, OH, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born September 25, 1921 in Warren, OH, the son of Walter C. and Ethel G. (Byrnes) Olin. He graduated in June 1939 from Chaulker High School in Southington and went to work in his father’s plumbing business. He served in the U.S. Army in October, 1942 and served with the 168th Field Artillery in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged December 26, 1945.

He married Audrey H. Hazeltine on January 13, 1946 and they bought a farm in Pierpont. Mr. Olin worked for True Temper, farmed with his father, worked for Pierpont Township, and was a Rural Carrier for the Post Office in Pierpont. In 1957, he began working for the Railway Post Office until the service was discontinued and he was attached to the Post Office in Warren. He became a Supervisor in Warren and then Postmaster at Kinsman Post Office in 1972 until his retirement in 1984.

His main hobby was singing and playing his guitar. He played locally at churches and events such as: The Pioneer Picnic, Fireman’s Fair, and various church meetings.

He was an active member of the Denmark E.U.B. and Bulah U.M. Churches. He and his wife were charter members in the Council for Dynamic Rural Ministries. He served as a member on the Pierpont Pioneer Picnic Board.

After retiring, he began making wood plaques as a hobby, which developed into Covered Bridge Clocks.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; daughters, Cynthia (Allen) Richards of Ashtabula and Reverend Patricia (Kenneth) Fischer of Jefferson; 11 grandchildren, Paula (Tom) Peterson, Zack and Kevin Richards, Robert (LuAnne) and Brian (Sonya) Pifer, Kristen Bailes, Mackenzie (Barry) Broughton, K. Martin Fischer, Karen Fischer, Lynne (Scott) Millard and Heather (Jon) Stoltz; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dorothy (Russell) Iliff; and his daughter, Suzanne L. Leonard.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the CHILDS & WILLIAMS FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 96 State Route 7, Pierpont, OH. Reverend Aletta Burkholder, pastor of Bulah Calvary United Methodist Church, Jefferson, OH, will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Pierpont, OH.

ASHTABULA — Roger Charles Stitt Jr., died Monday, July 12, 2004, at Ashtabula County Medical Center shortly after birth.

Survivors include his parents, Roger Charles and Angela Marie (Giannetto) Sr. of Ashtabula; maternal grandparents, David and Juanita Blessing of Ashtabula and Joseph c. and Johanna Giannetto Sr. of Long Island, NY; paternal grandmother, Ruth J. Stitt of Ashtabula; maternal great-grandparents, Philip and Beatrice Giannetto and Ignacio Rivera and Katherine Rivera; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Service will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, 3140 East Center Street, North Kingsville. Reverend Kenneth Roberts will officiate. Interment will follow.

Harry L. Stearns

CONNEAUT — Harry L. Stearns, age 69, of Conneaut, OH, died early Thursday morning, July 15, 2004, at Brown Memorial Hospital.

He was born in West Springfield, PA on March 17, 1935, the son of the late Harry D. and Rose C. (Harris) Stearns.

Harry’s last place of employment was working for Emsco. Previously, he worked at Premix in North Kingsville for over 20 years, where he worked as their Maintenance Supervisor.

He enjoyed boating, fishing, and in his earlier years, he was a pilot flying single engine airplanes. He loved animals, especially his cats. He was an avid Cleveland Indians Baseball fan and liked to watch Nascar races.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jack and Robert Stearns.

Harry is survived by a daughter, Diane Maunus and her husband, Jerry, of Ashtabula, OH; three sons, Ronald Stearns and his wife, Tammy, of Davidson, NC, James Stearns of Orlando, FL and Scott Stearns and his wife, Donna, also of Orlando, FL; friend, Brenda Chambers; nine grandchildren, Josh, Shawn and Matthew Maunus, and Alex, Brian, Michael, Andrew, Emily and Megan Stearns; and also many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Springfield Cemetery, Route 215, East Springfield, PA, with Pastor Barb English, of the Franklin Center United Methodist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Conneaut Volunteer Fire Department, Route 20, Conneaut, OH 44030.

Louise M. Candela

ASHTABULA — Louise M. Candela, age 90, a resident of Ashtabula, OH, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home after a brief illness.

Born January 21, 1914 in Conneaut, OH, she was the daughter of Angelo and Pasqualina (Pabbrocini) Gustaferro.

Mrs. Candela is a life member of Mother of Sorrows Church in Ashtabula.

Survivors include her son, Ronald Candela and wife, Janet, of Erie, PA; granddaughter, Maria Coble (Travis) of Pittsburgh, PA; one great-grandson, Nathan Coble; brother, William Gustaferro of Westlake, OH; sisters, Julia Napoli and husband, Francis, of Ashtabula and JoAnn Kapsanis of Erie, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Anthony Candela; sisters, Mae Lignetta, Clara DiMare and Elma Byrd; and brothers, Joseph and Armand Gustaferro.

Funeral Service will be 12 p.m., noon, on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Mother of Sorrows Church, Ashtabula, with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 West 19th Street, Ashtabula, OH, who has charge of arrangements.

Aileen M. Armstrong

CONNEAUT — Aileen M. Armstrong, age 62, of Conneaut, died Thursday morning, July 15, 2004, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Aileen was born March 24, 1942 in Conneaut, OH, the daughter of Willhart Kallio and Ann Sahl. She attended Conneaut High until her 12th year, then she married her husband, Gerald (Jerry), on January 26, 1960 at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church.

Aileen later became the first manager of the Lawson's Store on Mill Street in Conneaut. The store later changed names to the Dairymart. She managed the store for over 17 years and loved to talk to people and help them find there way in the store.

She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, and enjoyed housekeeping, gardening, traveling, and shopping.

Aileen loved to spend time with her grandchildren and family.

Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her parents.

Aileen is survived by her husband, Gerald (Jerry) H. Armstrong; a daughter, Monica and Larry Distelrath of Conneaut; two grandchildren, Jordan Wieser and Gabrielle Distelrath; and two brothers, Louis and Carolyn Snyder of Ashtabula, and Dennis and Leslie Kallio of North Kingsville.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, with Fr. Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.

The family will gather with friends and family at St. Frances Cabrini School Hall for a luncheon following the burial.

At Aileen's request, there will be no Calling Hours.

 Frank Lundgren

CONNEAUT — Frank “Don” Lundgren, age 73, of Conneaut, OH, died Friday morning, July 23, 2004, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center following a two-week illness.

He was born November 12, 1930 in Ruthven, IA, and was a son of N. Edward and Agnes (Pearson) Lundgren.

Mr. Lundgren was a Veteran of the U.S. Marines, and was owner and operator of Lundgren’s Refrigeration in Conneaut, retiring in 1993. He previously worked at RMI Titanium, the Nickel Plate Railroad, and Grow Fisheries.

He was an active member of United Church of Christ, where he served as usher, former moderator, Sunday School Superintendent, was a member of the diaconate, and a long-time member of the properties board. He was a member of the Conneaut Tree Commission, the American Legion Cowle Post #151, a former member of I.O.O.F., and the Conneaut Kiwanis Club.

He was a handyman who built their home of 55 years, which became a special place for spending time with his family and grandchildren. In his retirement years, he enjoyed woodworking, listening to music, and had a special gift for growing flowers and potted plants, of which he kept hundreds in his self-made custom greenhouse.

Survivors include his wife, Helen M. (Stewart) Lundgren, whom he married March 12, 1949; his daughter, Terri (Bill) Gross of Hampton, VA; two sons, William E. (Dinah) Lundgren and Mark A. (Janet) Lundgren, all of Conneaut; his sister, M. Elaine Nelson of Houston, TX; two brothers, Kenneth (Betty) Lundgren of Conneaut and Gary (June) Lundgren of Ashtabula; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; a grandson, Christopher Matthew Lundgren; and a granddaughter, Beth Lundgren.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Walter Coy, pastor of United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the American Legion.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Church of Christ Handicapped Parking Lot Fund. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

Carl B. Anthony

CONNEAUT — Carl B. Anthony, age 87, formerly of Broad Street, Conneaut, OH, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Inn Conneaut Health Center.

Born in Conneaut on May 9, 1917, the son of the late Michael and Mary (Vacco) Anthony.

Mr. Anthony was employed as a private contractor for many years. He also was a construction foreman at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home and operated the Union 76 Gas Station, on the corner of Lake Road and Broad Street, from where he retired.

He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, and in his leisure time, he enjoyed playing cards with his family. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan and especially enjoyed caring for his dog, Benny.

He is survived by three daughters, Marie (Toby) Workman, Donna (Gene) Jarvi, and Judy Hubenko, all of Conneaut; five sons, Carl R. (Mary Ann) Anthony of Naples, FL, Robert C. (Anita) Anthony of New Orleans, LA, Michael N. (JoAnn) Anthony, David A. (Barbara) Anthony and Gordon P. (Ana) Anthony, all of Conneaut; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Virginia and Dana Mostello, both of Englewood, FL; and a brother, Gordon Anthony of Conneaut.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; and two brothers, Albert and Michael Anthony.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 30, 2004, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Reverend Raymond Thomas, of the St. Frances Cabrini Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Thursday, July 29, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Family suggests memorials be made in his name to the Conneaut Station 3 Rescue Squad or the Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

Hazel E. Bjerstedt

ASHTABULA — Hazel Estella Bjerstedt, age 96, a resident of Ashtabula, OH, died Tuesday July 27, 2004, at Fairview/Grace Hospital in Cleveland, OH.

Born October 22, 1907 in Jefferson, OH, she was the daughter of Frank and Flora (Seelye) Mullen. She lived 75 of her years in Ashtabula, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

During W.W.II, she worked in the war plants in Ashtabula making bayonets and bomb cores. In her last fourteen working years, she was employed by the U.S. Bureau of the Census until her retirement.

Mrs. Bjerstedt looked forward to attending the Book Forum Luncheons, and took part in many activities with the Ashtabula Chapter of the Wayside Garden Club.

In her late seventies she enjoyed traveling and has visited Sweden, London, Alaska, Hawaii, and the west coast of Canada, as well as several mainland states. Most of all she enjoyed time with her loving family.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Francis and Irene Bjerstedt; daughter, Patricia Bjerstedt; grandsons, Thomas (Ines) Bjerstedt, and Robert (Cindy) Bjerstedt; granddaughters, Mary Lynn (Anthony) Tonti, Carol (Andrew) Thomas, and Leslie (William) Shearstone; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Anton Bjerstedt; and a granddaughter, Karen Bjerstedt.

Service will be held Saturday, July 31, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Reverend Ray Williams, Pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.

Calling Hours will be Friday, July 30, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME.

 Robert E. Jarvela

CONNEAUT — Robert E. Jarvela, age 77, of Broad Street, Conneaut, OH, died Wednesday evening, July 28, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville, OH.

He was a lifelong Conneaut resident, being born on February 7, 1927, a son of Elmer L. and Toni (Mackey) Jarvela. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served on the naval destroyer “Nelson” during W.W. II.

He was employed at the P & C Dock Company, the Penn Central and Nickel Plate Railroads, and retired from the Olin Chemical Company as a welder.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a former member of the American Legion.

He loved Lake Erie and enjoyed boating, fishing, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie (Druyor) Jarvela, whom he married March 2, 1950; a daughter, Sandra Jarvela of Conneaut; a son, Carey of Holly Hills, FL; a brother, Bruce M. Jarvela of Norfolk, VA; and a granddaughter, Erin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bobby Jarvela in 2000; a sister, Jean Cunningham; and a brother in infancy.

Family Services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH.

No Calling Hours will be observed.
