KINGSVILLE — James P. Wilbert, 94, of East 51st Street, died Sunday, 
March 28, 2004, at Ashtabula County Nursing Home. A Memorial Mass will be held 7 
p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Avenue, 
Ashtabula, OH. Reverend Fr. Philip Miller, Pastor, will preside. A Graveside 
Service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the family grave

WILLIAM R. COLBY 
 
CONNEAUT — William Rea Colby, 82, of Conneaut, OH, died Thursday 
morning, April 1, 2004, at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was 
born May 2, 1921, in Amboy, OH, and was a son of Earl L. and Dorothy L. (Frary) 
Colby. 
 
He was employed as electrical supervisor at Union Carbide–Elkem Metals in 
Ashtabula, OH, retiring in 1983 with 36 years service. Mr. Colby was a member of 
the Keepville Wesleyan Methodist Church in Keepville, PA, and devoted his life 
to his church and Lord. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. 
 
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Cheryl Ann (Brocksieker) Colby; his 
daughter, Barbara E. (Thomas) Alexander of Austin, TX; four sisters, Esther R. 
Nelson of Macomb, IL, Sarah Colby of High Point, NC, Dorothy (Paul) Brinks of 
Salisbury, NC, and Rebecka F. (Bill) Untch of High Point, NC; three brothers, 
Earl E. (Betty) Colby of Saybrook, OH, Jim (Loretta) Colby of Monroe 
Township, OH, and George (Dolores) of Ft. Collins, CO; four grandchildren, 
Thomas and Theodore Alexander, William Burr, and Melanie Padilla; and a 
great-granddaughter, Keyana Alexander. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Deborah L. Burr, in 1976; 
his sister, Mary Golden; and his brother, John Colby, in infancy. 
 
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, at the Marcy 
Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with 
Rev. Dan Cope of Keepville Wesleyan Methodist Church officiating.  
 
Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

CONNEAUT — Ernest “Soupy” Pasqualone, 79, a resident of Geneva, died 
Thursday, April 1, 2004 at The Villa at the Lake, Conneaut.  
 
Born on Dec. 8, 1924, in Geneva, he was the son of Anthony and Mary (DeFalicibus) 
Pasqualone. 
 
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. 
 
He was plant manager of Molded Fiber Glass. 
 
He was a member of the Geneva VFW, American Legion and Rotary. 
 
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Pasqualone and Karen Anderson; one 
sister, Lucy (William) Lindquist and one brother, Mike (Norma) Pasqualone, all 
from Geneva. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; sister, Lucy; 
brother, Edward. 
 
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 5 at WALKER FUNERAL 
HOME, 828 Sherman St., Geneva with Fr. Paul Tobin, of Assumption Church 
officiating. 
 
Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Geneva.

GEORGE A. POTTER 
 
CONNEAUT – George A. Potter, Jr., 76, of Detroit St., Conneaut, 
died Friday morning, April 2, 2004 of cancer. He was born September 10, 1927, in 
Cleveland, and was a son of George A. Potter Sr., and Lula (Curtis) Potter 
Hengartner. 
 
A lifelong Conneaut resident, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, 
and retired from Copes-Vulcan in Fairview, PA. He was a member of Fraternal 
Order of Eagles Aerie #408, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #472, and American Legion 
Cowle Post #151. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, and hunting. 
 
Survivors include tow daughters, Nancy (Joe) Rockwell of Conneaut, and 
Sandra (Bruce) Campbell of Ashtabula; six sons, Bradley (Cheryl) Potter of 
Conneaut, Russell (Lisa) and Gregory (Tamara) all of Ashtabula, Gary (Lidia) 
of Conneaut, Patrick of Conneaut, and Kirk of Florida; two 
sisters, June Varketta of Ashtabula, and Lula Howland of Kingsville;  
19 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ralph. 
 
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, at the Marcy Funeral 
Home and Cremation Service, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with Tim Kraus 
of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in East Conneaut 
Cemetery, with full military rites.

He was born July 23, 1909, the son of Adam Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth (Haley) 
Wilbert and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.  
 
Prior to his retirement, he worked 40 years for C.E.I. as an electrician.  
 
A Veteran of the U. S. Army, he served at the Battle of Okinowa.  
 
A member of St. Joseph Church, he loved to travel all over the world with family 
and friends.  
 
His survivors include several nieces and nephews; and his god-son, Robert 
Scherman of Galloway, OH.  
 
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Daniel, George, Edward, and William; 
two sisters, Agnes and Martha; and his parents.  
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 7 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. 
Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, OH. Reverend Fr. Fred Nachtigal, 
Pastor, will preside. 
 
A Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the

DOUGLAS L. BEERS 
 
WEST SPRINGFIELD, PA — Douglas L. Beers, age 73, of West Springfield, PA, died 
Monday, April 5, 2004, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA. 
 
He was born in Greenville, PA on March 26, 1931, the son of the late Earl D. and 
Winifred Agnes (Peabody) Beers. 
 
Douglas served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and then went to work on 
the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroads. In 1960, he took a position at Rockwell 
International in Ashtabula, OH where he worked until the plant re-located in 
1984. He then went to work at Chapens West End Hardware in Conneaut, OH 
where he has been currently working. 
 
He was a member of the Conneaut Moose Lodge #472 and the American Legion 
#567. 
 
He enjoyed his collection of Cub Cadet tractors and he enjoyed plowing snow and 
mowing lawns with them. He also enjoyed reading the local newspapers in the 
morning. 
 
He is survived by a sister, Carolyn R. Biscoff of West Springfield, PA; a niece, 
Bonnie (David) Howland of Conneaut, OH; and a nephew, Daniel (Sharon) 
Biscoff of West Springfield, PA. 
 
There will be no Calling Hours. 
 
Life Celebration Services will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at 12 p.m., 
noon, at the JEAN EVANS THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME, 11883 Main Street, East

CONNEAUT — Arlowene N. Rector, 81, of Parrish Road in Conneaut, died 
Thursday, April 8, 2004 at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. 
 
She was born August 4, 1922 in Conneaut. She was the daughter of Lee R. 
and Lottie L. (Barney) Goldsmith. 
 
A 1940 graduate of Rowe High School, she had worked in the accounting department 
of General Electric. She lived in Traverse City, Michigan for 30 years before 
returning to Conneaut in 1991. 
 
She was a member of Amboy United Methodist Church and W.I.M.A.R.E.N.S. (Wives of 
Marine Engineers). She loved to play bridge and enjoyed spending time with her 
friends at The Villa At The Lake. 
 
Survivors include her brother, Robert L. Goldsmith of Conneaut; a step-daughter, 
Joy Gwaltney of Alexandria, Virginia; and two step-sons, Cle Rector of Chicago, 
Illinois, and James Rector of Boulder, Colorado. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George B. Rector in 1992; 
and a half-sister, Leah O’Connell in 1992. 
 
Funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004 at the MARCY

A lifelong area resident, he formerly worked at Newcomb Lumber, attended the 
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and enjoyed fishing and collecting 
aluminum cans. 
 
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Gier) Waldo, whom he married November 23, 
1979; a step-son and step-daughter; and three step-grandchildren.

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Lloyd E. Morris Sr., 71, of North Ridge Road East, 
Ashtabula Township, OH, passed away Friday morning, April 9, 2004, in the 
Hospice Unit of the Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula, OH. 
 
Mr. Morris was born to Wallace Richmond and Velda Marina (Hudson) Morris on May 
5, 1932 in Belva, WV, on 20 Mile Creek. He spent his early life there before 
moving to Ashtabula, OH as a young man. 
 
Mr. Morris was employed by Sheffield Manufacturing of Ashtabula for 26 years. 
After retiring, he spent several more years working for Normandy Development as 
an apartment manager and Balkan Bakery as a delivery driver. 
 
Mr. Morris enjoyed cooking, building furniture, blue grass and country music, 
gardening, bowling and helping people. 
 
Survivors include a daughter, Linda E. Judge of Indianapolis, IN; sons, Lloyd E. 
(Doreen) Morris Jr. of Jefferson, OH and Kenneth R. (Sherri) Morris of Rome, OH; 
seven grandchildren, Lloyd E. (Janice) Morris III, Mike S. (Heidi) Morris, Keith 
R. Morris, Todd R. Morris, Kevin R. Morris, Kendra E. Morris and Megan M. Judge; 
four great-grandchildren, Lloyd E. Morris IV, Brent A. Morris, Caitlin N. Morris

CLEVELAND — Marcelene J. Pape, age 76, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at the 
Cleveland Clinic. 
 
Mrs. Pape was born December 30, 1927 in Conneaut, the daughter of Carl 
and Ethel Notte. She graduated from Conneaut High School and worked for the 
Astatic Corporation as an assembler.  
 
Marcelene was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut. She 
was also a member of the Cara Mia Club, the Friendship Club and the Garabaldi 
Club.  
 
She enjoyed traveling, cruises and bingo. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony (Nean) Pape; her 
11-year-old daughter, Gail Pape; and a twin sister at birth. 
 
Mrs. Pape is survived by three sons, Mark Pape of Strongsville, OH, Robert C. 
and Debbie Pape, and Anthony Pape, both of Conneaut; a granddaughter, 
Christina; a grandson, Nick; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Pape; foster-son, George 
Osborn of Huntsville, AL; and her close friend, Jane Cornuet. 
 
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, 
at St. Mary Church in Conneaut, with Father Philip Miller, of St. Joseph

HOWARD D. LAIRD 
   
NORTH KINGSVILLE — Howard Duane Laird, 76, died peacefully at home in 
North Kingsville, on Saturday, April 3, 2004, after a long battle with 
prostate cancer. 
 
Beloved husband of Joan Walrath Laird; loving father of Pamela S. Laird of 
Occidental, CA, Stephanie J. Wong of Portland, OR, and Ned W. (Chip) Laird of 
Boise, ID; and dedicated grandfather of Rachel and Jessica Wong, and Emma and 
Graham Laird. He is also survived by his stepmother, Catherine Anne (Nan) 
Stearns Laird of Monroeville, OH; and brothers, William Scott of Lyndhurst, OH, 
John Scott of Frankfurt, IN, and Henry James of Clyde, OH, all formerly of 
Conneaut. 
 
Duane was born in Conneaut, OH, on January 3, 1928, and graduated from 
Conneaut High School in 1946. He served in the Air Force from 1946-48, 
including at Air Force Headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany, during the Berlin 
Airlift. He played baseball with the Monroe Athletic Club for 16 years. 
 
Duane made his career with the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, where he 
advanced from operations to industrial engineering, and finally to labor 
relations. He was the Manager of Labor Relations in Greenville, PA, prior to his 
retirement in 1983, after 34 years of service. In retirement, he operated a 
framing business in conjunction with the Pine Needle Craft Studio, a Greenville 
business created by his wife, Joan. 
 
During the 30 years he lived in Greenville, he was a member of Greenville First 
Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at Greenville Hospital, a director of the 
Bessemer Federal Credit Union, and an Elk. He was an ordained elder of the North 
Kingsville Presbyterian Church, and an avid golfer and member of Village Green 
Golf Course. 
 
Duane will long be remembered for his positive spirit, generous nature, 
welcoming smile and joyful sense of humor, even in the most difficult of 
circumstances. 
 
A Memorial Service will be held at the North Kingsville Presbyterian 
Church, located at Church and Maple Streets, on Friday, April 16, 2004, at 11 
a.m. 
 
Immediately following the service will be a luncheon in his honor at the Church 
Fellowship Hall, where the family will greet guests. No other calling hours will 
be observed.

Mr. Belnap was born April 26, 1924, in Conneaut, OH, the son of Henry and 
Alta (Gibson) Belnap. He was a 1942 Rowe High School graduate. 
 
Following graduation, he went on to work at the General Electric Company and 
then enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army from 1943 until he 
was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He went back to work at the 
Conneaut General Electric Base plant. He started in the production 
department and later worked as a foreman for over 15 years. He retired in 1984 
following 41 years of service. 
 
He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut 
and the American Legion, Cowle Post #151. 
 
He enjoyed bowling, gardening, traveling and yardwork. Mr. Belnap loved to watch 
sports, especially the Cleveland Cavs, Indians and Browns. 
 
Mr. Belnap was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Henry Belnap 
and Leon Belnap. 
 
He is survived by his wife, Jennie DeNunzio Belnap, whom he married June 26, 
1948, at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. Also surviving are many special nieces 
and nephews. 
 
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, 
2004, at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, Conneaut, with Father 
Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 
Conneaut, with the American Legion Honor Squadron conducting Full Military 
Rites.

CONNEAUT — Thelma J. Hirsimaki, 77, of Conneaut, OH, died Monday 
morning, April 12, 2004, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA. 
 
She was born April 11, 1927, in Conneaut, OH, to Walter and Grace (Eighmy) 
Burdick. 
 
A 1945 graduate of Conneaut High School, she retired as office manager 
from her husband’s car dealership, Hirsimaki Pontiac, to raise her son. She 
formerly worked in the office at J.C. Penney’s and was a secretary at Russell 
Company. 
 
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, tatting, gardening both flowers and vegetables, 
shopping, dancing, and was a dog fancier. 
 
Survivors include her son, Todd R. Hirsimaki of Conneaut, OH; her sister, 
Norma (Bob) Marn of Conneaut, OH; and numerous nieces, nephews and 
cousins. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ted, in 1997. 
 
Graveside Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at East 
Conneaut Cemetery, with the Reverend Dr. Clyde A. McGee, pastor of Good 
Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating.

KINGSVILLE — Thomas F. Bancroft, 88, of Route 193, Kingsville, 
died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at his home. He was born February 10, 1916, in 
Lenox Twp., the son of Lynn and Jennie (Weaver) Bancroft, and has been a 
lifetime area resident. 
 
He was a graduate of Kingsville High School. He worked for 30 years with 
East Ohio Gas Company, and in the 1930s he was with the United States CCC 
program. 
 
He was a member of the Gageville United Methodist Church; the Orion Lodge 353 F 
& AM, and the Bennett Hunting Club in Pennsylvania. He was a former 
Kingsville Township trustee. He enjoyed making Maple Syrup, playing pool and 
cards, and fishing. 
 
Surviving him are his son, Craig (Cheryl) Bancroft of Kingsville; a 
daughter, Glenna (Joe) Rodebaugh of Kingsville; six grandchildren and 
eleven great-grandchildren. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marbelle, on January 27, 
2004; a son, Gary, in 1987; a daughter, Joyce Ann at birth; a granddaughter, 
Robin Bancroft Knapp; and two brothers, Clyde and Jay. 
 
Graveside services will be Friday, April 16, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Lulu Falls 
Cemetery in Kingsville, with Rev. Bonnie Habbersett of the Kingsville 
Presbyterian Church, officiating.

MATTHEW D. ZOLNIER 
   
CONNEAUT — Matthew David Zolnier, age 21, passed away unexpectedly on 
April 5, 2004. 
 
Matt was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on December 29, 1982. Matt had been a 
longtime resident of the San Ramon Valley in California. He was a 2001 graduate 
of San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., where he was a varsity 
soccer player. He also played soccer for the San Ramon and Mustang leagues. Matt 
attended Diablo Valley College, and recently attended La Mesa City College. He 
was looking forward to attending UC–San Diego in the fall. What was most 
important to Matt was making his friends laugh and building friendships that 
would last a lifetime. 
 
Matt is survived by his parents, James and Kathy (Spencer) Zolnier of San Ramon, 
Calif.; two brothers, Michael Anthony Zolnier and Casey James Zolnier of San 
Ramon; grandparents, Chloe Spencer of Conneaut, and Michael and Pearl Zolnier of 
Masury, Ohio; many aunts and uncles; and the “Cousin Club.” 
 
Matt was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Chuck Spencer.

WILLIAM E. LAITURI 
 
CONNEAUT — William E. Laituri, 79, of Conneaut, OH, died Monday 
evening, April 12, 2004, at his home of a probable coronary. He was born August 
9, 1924, in Conneaut and was the son of William A. and Matilda (Maki) 
Laituri. 
 
A Conneaut High School graduate, he was a lifelong Conneaut 
resident and was employed at the Conneaut Base Plant of General Electric, 
retiring in 1984 as a machinist. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran 
Church, Evergreen Lodge #222 F. & A.M., and the Shriners. He enjoyed watching 
stock car racing locally at Raceway 7, and Nascar on TV. He raced cars himself 
in the ’40s and ’50s and later sponsored cars. He enjoyed his cars and taking 
care of them. 
 
Survivors include two nephews, David Arkilander of Stratford, Conn., and William 
Arkilander of Riverton, Conn.; a niece, Sue Herron of Burlington, Conn.; and his 
friends and care givers Joe Griffey and Dick Meinke of Conneaut, OH. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lula Arkilander.

JEFFERSON — James W. Bloom, 65, of Doyle Road, Jefferson Township, OH, died 
Wednesday morning, April 14, 2004, at his residence following a short illness 
with cancer. 
 
He was born August 2, 1938 in Ashtabula, OH, the son of George W. and Ina M. (Peaspanen) 
Bloom and has lived in Plymouth Township and Jefferson Township all of his life. 
He was a 1956 graduate of Ashtabula High School. 
 
Mr. Bloom was an electrician more than 30 years with I.B.E.W. Local #673, 
retiring in 1987. Mr. Bloom also owned and operated Bloom’s Arena. 
 
He was a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran 
Church, was involved with the Rhythm Riders 4-H Club more than 48 years, was a 
life member of the Dusty Boots Riding Club, receiving the President’s Award, was 
a member of the Ohio Team Ropers Association and for 20 years hosted the Biff 
Fitting Memorial Roping at his arena. 
 
He had a great love for horses, enjoyed his longhorn cattle and farming. He had 
an innovative and creative ability to work with most things and loved to watch 
his grandchildren’s activities. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Andrea J. (McClure) Bloom, whom he married September 
6, 1996 at the Bloom Farm; four children, Terri Bloom Tisch of Jefferson, OH, 
LuAnn Fischer of Sheffield Township, OH, Bonnie S. Brockway and Gregory S. 
Bloom, both of Jefferson, OH; two step-sons, Chad C. Glunt of State College, PA

Loren, Thomas, Adam and Kelly; a great step-granddaughter, Genevieve; three

Reo, Conneaut, OH and the late Ralph Reo. 
 
She had been an art teacher at the Warren County Technical School, Washington, 
NJ for 20 years. She was a talented artist and gifted singer. She graduated from 
Bowling Green University. 
 
Survivors include her mother; her husband of 18 years, Frank Delmore; daughter, 
Marisa and son, Cullen, both at home; brother, Richard of Paw Paw, MI; five 
sisters, Rosemary Fails of Alliance, OH, Bonnie Schiavone of Brook Park, OH,

He was born June 22, 1975, in Conneaut, OH, and was a son of Richard E. 
and Alice (Mozena) Artman Jr. 
 
A 1993 graduate of Conneaut High School, he was employed as a paint 
department supervisor at Enterprise Welding in Madison. He was a lifelong area 
resident and was a member of State Line United Methodist Church in Monroe
Township, OH. 
 
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking in the woods, and generally being outdoors. 
 
Survivors include his parents, of Conneaut, OH; two brothers, Rick and 
Scott Artman of Conneaut, OH; his maternal grandmother, Grace I. Mozena 
of Conneaut, OH; his girlfriend, Misty Workman of Madison, OH; and aunts, 
uncles, and more distant relatives. 
 
He was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Artman; his paternal

CONNEAUT — Eugenia Raciborski, 90, of Madison Street, Conneaut, 
OH, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. 
 
Born in Conneaut, OH, on December 14, 1913, the daughter of the late 
Teofil and Julia (Drongroski) Raciborski, she had resided in Conneaut her 
entire life. 
 
Mrs. Raciborski was employed by the former Conneaut Banking and Trust 
Company and retired from the Second National Bank as a teller; she was also in 
charge of the safety deposit boxes. 
 
She was a member of the St. Mary’s Church and the Polish American Ladies. She 
graduated from Conneaut High School in 1932 and enjoyed meeting her 
classmates for lunch. 
 
Survivors include two nieces, Karen Bordeaux Williams of Streetsboro, OH, and 
Barbara (Robert) Bordeaux Silverberg of Kent, OH; two nephews, William (Rose) 
Hill and James (Barbara) Hill, both of Conneaut; and several 
great-nieces, great-nephews; and great-great nieces and great-great-nephews. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Hill and 
Sophia Bordeaux.

CONNEAUT — Frieda Wartiainen, 84, of Harbor Street, Conneaut, OH, 
died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. 
 
Mrs. Wartiainen was born in Germany, November 22, 1919. She had resided in 
Conneaut most of her life. 
 
She was an avid league bowler at El Camp Lanes for many years and enjoyed 
crossword puzzles. 
 
She was a graduate of Lancaster High School with the Class of 1938, and she 
served as secretary for several schools where her husband, Lauri, was a teacher. 
 
She is survived by a daughter, Janet Wartiainen of Ashtabula, OH. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lauri, to whom 
she had been married for 62 years; and a daughter, Carol Wartiainen. 
 
Mrs. Wartiainen donated her body to Case Western Reserve Medical School. There 
will be no service or calling hours.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, PA – George W. Hills, 81, of West Springfield, PA, died 
Thursday morning April 15, 2004, at the Tavares Hospital Waterman, in Tavares, 
FL. 
 
He was born February 3, 1923 in Spring Township, PA, and was a son of Wallace A. 
and Edith E. (Congdon) Hills. 
 
A Springfield area resident since 1940, he graduated from Springfield High 
School and attended Edinboro University.  
 
He was a career veteran of the U.S. Army. He served during World War II and the 
Korean Conflict, retiring after 23 years as a major. 
 
He was a Teamster and a local truck driver mostly in Erie, PA, and was employed 
as evening terminal manager at Terminal Transport. 
 
He was a member of West Springfield United Methodist Church and the Veterans of 
Foreign Wars West Springfield Post. He had served on the Northwestern School 
Board for over 20 years. 
 
He was an avid boater and was a member of the Conneaut Boat Club and the 
Lake Erie Boat Club. He enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. 
 
Survivors include his wife Agnes D. (Devlin) Hills whom he married November 25, 
1942; two sons, Laurie L. (Denise) and Dennis C. (Debbie) Hills all of West 
Springfield, PA; four grandchildren, Kimberly Hills, Jessica Hills, Kristina 
Buzard, and Justin Hills; and two sisters, Verna Weldon of West Springfield and 
Marjorie (Clair) Cherry of Peoria, AZ. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers Gerald V., Richard

ASHTABULA – Former Conneaut, resident, Susan B. Conroy, 63, of Ashtabula, died 
Saturday afternoon, April 17, at Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula. She 
was born May 27, 1940 in Glassport, PA, and was the daughter of David and 
Elizabeth (Wilding) Salvi. 
 
She graduated from Glassport High School in 1958 and from California State 
College in 1962 where she was active in theater and was a member of Tri Sigma 
Sorority. She was employed as a speech therapist in the Ashtabula schools and in 
the Conneaut schools. She was a member of First Baptist Church in 
Conneaut and the Women of the Moose. She coached C.L.Y.O. Little League for 
seven years with her husband, and enjoyed bingo, reading, crafts, and was an 
animal and bird lover. 
 
Survivors include her husband James J. Conroy whom she married July 7, 1962; a 
daughter Kelly L. (Christopher) Cimino of Austinburg Township; a son David S. 
Conroy of Austinburg Township; and triplet grandchildren Christopher W., 
Katherine A., and Paige Elizabeth Conroy. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents. 
 
A prayer service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, at the Marcy

ERIE, PA – Sheila A. Kahler, 65, of Conneaut, OH, died Saturday morning, 
April 17, 2004 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA. She was born September 24, 
1938, in Conneaut, OH, and was a daughter of James I. Milne and Ruth M. (Sjostrom) 
Milne Lampela. 
 
A lifelong Conneaut resident, she was a 1956 graduate of Conneaut 
High School and had attended the Buffalo Grooming School. She was the owner of 
Happy Pets and raised and bred Briards. She was a member of the Briard Club and 
participated in many dog shows. She was a member and past president of the 
Ashtabula County Business Women’s Association. She had also sold copperware for 
many years and was district manager at one time. 
 
Sheila was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she sang in the 
church choir, directed the children’s choir, and taught Sunday School at one 
time. She also sang with the Erie Philharmonic Chorus. 
 
She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and roller-skating. 
 
Survivors include her daughter Julie M. (Gary) Caito of Tonawanda, NY; two sons 
William P. (Marita) Kahler of Smyrna, GA, and David E. Kahler of Austin, TX; her 
sister Trudy M. (Gene) Daly of West Palm Beach, FL; and her brother Jerald E. 
(Faye) Lampela of Conneaut, OH; and five grandchildren, Justin, Brandon, 
Carina, Katie and Brady. 
 
She was preceded in death by her mother Ruth Lampela in 1989; her husband George 
T. Kahler in 1994; a grandson Ryan Kahler; and her stepfather Edwin H. Lampela 
in 2003 who had raised her since early childhood.

CONNEAUT — Barbara A. Vaughn, of Conneaut, OH, died Thursday, 
April 22, 2004, at University Hospital in Cleveland, OH. 
 
A daughter of Theodore and Lydia (Montgomery) Reynolds, she was born and raised 
in Warren, OH. 
 
She was employed by Republic Steel in Warren until 1974, when she moved to 
Conneaut.  
 
She was a member of the Mary Redmond chapter of the Daughters of the American 
Revolution. 
 
She was a gourmet cook and enjoyed music, sewing, playing cards, and bird 
watching. 
 
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth H. Vaughn, whom she married September 12, 
1960; two daughters, Lydia Rachel (Gary) Potter of Conneaut, OH, and 
LuAnne (Allen) Waha of Dorset, OH; and eight grandchildren, James Robert Potter, 
John Spencer Potter, Kim, Michelle, Stacy, Angel, Bill and Frank Waha. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rebecca and Theatis; and 
four brothers, Theodore and Orace Lee Reynolds, both killed in action during 
World War II, and James and Ronald Reynolds. 
 
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 26, 2004, at the MARCY 
FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the 
Reverend Raymond L. Lamb, pastor of the Conneaut Church of God,

ASHTABULA — Elsie Bertha VanKirk, age 83, of Columbus Avenue, Ashtabula, OH, 
died April 24, 2004, at the Country Club Retirement Center in Ashtabula. 
 
Born August 5, 1920 in Cleveland, OH, she was a daughter of the late Ernst 
Edward and Emma (Wischalski) Schanfish. Mrs. VanKirk lived in Ashtabula most of 
her adult life. 
 
At one time, Mrs. VanKirk owned her own company running ice cream trucks in 
Ashtabula. Mrs. VanKirk also worked at Molded Fiberglass. 
 
On December 27, 1943, she married Charles Wesley VanKirk in Cleveland, OH. Mrs. 
VanKirk was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Ashtabula.  
 
She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, painting, spending time with her family, 
gardening, traveling, and wintering in Florida. 
 
Survivors include her husband, Charles Wesley VanKirk; children, Charles VanKirk 
Jr. (wife, Chris) of Ashtabula, Connie True (husband, Clair) of Haysville, KS 
and Edward VanKirk of Reading, PA; grandchildren, Melanie Hanson and Heather

Emelia (Hakola) Isaacson, she had resided in Conneaut most of her life 
but had lived with her daughter in Chandler, AZ, since this past December. 
 
She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and, in her leisure time, 
enjoyed bowling, cooking and baking. 
 
Survivors include her daughter, Candice Hope of Chandler, AZ; two grandchildren, 
Jason Hope of Glendale, AZ, and Ashley Hope of Chandler, AZ; and three 
great-grandchildren. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold S.; and a 
sister, Sanelma (Sam) Kallio.

JAMES H. JONES SR. 
   
CONNEAUT — James H. Jones Sr., age 82, of Conneaut, OH, died 
Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut. 
 
Mr. Jones was born February 1, 1922, in South Amboy, NJ, the son of James H. and 
Ada (Ward ) Jones. 
 
In June of 1940, Mr. Jones enlisted in the United States Army, following high 
school, to serve his country. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor during World War 
II and was honorably discharged in July of 1945. He worked for the Standard Oil 
Company for several years and later the City of Conneaut, where he 
retired from the Public Works Department. 
 
Mr. Jones enjoyed fishing and hunting, was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed 
watching television. He loved to go to the Light House Cafe Coffee Shop in the 
mornings, to socialize with his friends. 
 
He was also a member of the former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Conneaut. 
 
He is survived by two sons, James H. (and Patricia) Jones Jr. of Conneaut, 
and Charlie (and Dolly) Jones Sr. of Roanoke, VA; a stepson, Frank Vigarito of 
Cleveland; a daughter, Deborah Kaye of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Tracy 
Marvin, Katherine Fuller, Charlie Jones Jr., Tiffanie Jones, Michael Miller and 
Tammy Moffat; and several great-grandchildren. 
 
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jessie Jones; 
and his second wife, Edith Jones. 
 
Graveside Service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at St. 
Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut, with Father Raymond Thomas officiating. At the 
request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

CONNEAUT — Marion Ralston, 94, formerly of King Street, Conneaut, 
OH, died Monday, April 26, 2004, in Southland Suite, Lakeland, FL. 
 
Born in Conneaut, OH, May 29, 1910, the daughter of the late Charles B. 
and Daisey O’Brien. She had resided in Conneaut until moving to Florida 
in 1979. 
 
Mrs. Ralston was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the L.C.B.A. 
 
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Shirkman of Davenport, FL; two sons, 
Brien Ralston of Beverly Hills, MI, and John (Jack) Ralston of Northfield, OH; 
13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Ralston. 
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 30, 2004, at 1 p.m. at St.

KINGSVILLE — Donald L. Trask Jr., 54, a former resident of the Kingsville 
area, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital of San Jose, CA. 
 
Born in Ashtabula, OH, September 20, 1949, he was the son of Donald and Maxine 
(March) Trask. Leaving the Kingsville area 30 years ago, he has lived in 
California for the last 13 years. 
 
He was a graduate of Edgewood High School, in 1967; attended Kent State; and was 
a Veteran of the Ohio National Guard, Company B, from 1969 to 1975. On June 28, 
1986, he married the former Deborah Cannon. 
 
For over 30 years, he was in the electronics business. He worked for Integrated 
Solutions Inc. and was vice president of worldwide sales, traveling all over the 
world. 
 
Mr. Trask enjoyed racing his vintage Jaguar and a Reynard Formula III. 
 
Survivors include his wife, of San Jose; a sister, Deborah L. Johnson of 
Austinburg; a brother, Dennis L. Trask of Bristolville, OH; his parents, Donald 
and Maxine Trask of Kingsville; and grandparents, Joseph and Alma 
Leskovsky of North Kingsville.

He was born March 6, 1956, in Rutland, VT, and was the son of Burless and Ida 
(Springer) Belcher. 
 
A Conneaut resident most of his life, he was employed at General 
Aluminum; enjoyed listening to music; and spending time with his children, 
granddaughter, and his best friend, Jimmy Connors. 
 
Survivors include his mother, of Conneaut, OH; three daughters, Starr and Cassie 
Belcher, both at home, and Tracey Belcher, who is out of state; his son, Willie 
Belcher of Conneaut; two sisters, Bonnie (Dale) Dudas of Honolulu, HI, 
and Lois Fleming of Canton, GA; and his granddaughter, Haylee Belcher. 
 
He was preceded in death by his father; and his son, Richard Jr., who was 
stillborn in 1982.

KINGSVILLE — Victor E. Fetters, 83, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at 
the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville, OH. 
 
He was born on February 23, 1921, in New Lyme, OH, the son of Roy A. Fetters and 
Wilma M. (Bebout) Fetters. 
 
A lifelong New Lyme resident, Mr. Fetters graduated from Deming High School in 
New Lyme in 1939. Mr. Fetters owned and operated with his son a dairy and grain 
farm for over sixty years, remaining active until the last year. He was a member 
of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, where he formerly served as a 
trustee. Mr. Fetters was a member of the Jefferson Grange #1311, the Ashtabula 
County Holstein Club, the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club, the Farm Bureau, 
the United Methodist Men, and an associate member of the Laker Ruritan Club. He 
was the sole recipient of a sixty-year attendance award at the New Lyme Alumni 
Banquet. 
 
His Hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking, and being with his family. 
He was well-known for roasting pigs for area fund-raisers. 
 
Mr. Fetters married Alice E. Betts on December 31, 1944, in Andover, Ohio. 
 
Mr. Fetters is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernon and Roy 
Fetters Jr., and one sister, Glenna Lipps.

CLEVELAND — Helen E. Wright, 86, of Conneaut, OH, died Thursday morning, 
April 29, 2004, at University Hospital in Cleveland, OH. She was born May, 27, 
1917, in Hazelton, PA, and was a daughter of Victor and Theresa (Marini) 
Philistine. 
 
A Conneaut resident most of her life, Mrs. Wright was employed as a buyer 
in the children’s department at the former Pelton’s Department Store in 
Conneaut. During World War II, she worked in a war plant in New Jersey. She 
was a member of First United Methodist Church and Rose Chapter #22, Order of 
Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and dancing. 
 
Survivors include her daughter, Linda J. Wright of Conneaut, OH: four 
sisters, Genevive Sheridan of Arlington, VA, Lenora Broyan of Yardley, PA, 
Angeline Planck of Hazelton, PA, and Mary McGlynn of New Jersey; her brother, 
Victor Philistine of Florida; and her grandson Thomas J. Ritari of Willoughby, 
OH. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John H. Wright Jr., in 
1922; two sisters, Joyce Tucciarone and Nancy Repanshek; two brothers, Donald

JEAN A. LOOMIS 
 
ASHTABULA — Jean A. Loomis, 72, of Crown St., died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at 
UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. Born in Conneaut on January 23, 1932, the 
daughter of the late Roland H. and Amy (Knapp) Downing, she had resided here her 
entire life. 
 
Mrs. Loomis was employed by the Conneaut Area City Schools for 28 years 
as the head cashier and bookkeeper for the cafeteria. She also served as 
treasurer of the Non-classified employees union. She served as president of the 
PTA and was also president of the Child Guidance Mothers’ Club. She was a member 
of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday 
School for several years. Mrs. Loomis was actively involved with her children 
and grandchildren where she served as a Girl Scout leader and was a scorekeeper 
for the girls softball team. She especially enjoyed attending her children and 
grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. 
 
She is survived by her husband, Claude M., to whom she had been married for the 
past 54 years; Two daughters, Amy (Robert) McClintock of Conneaut, and 
Susanne Loomis of Boston, MA; a son, Claude R. Butch (Nancy) Loomis of 
Conneaut; seven Grandchildren, Robert McClintock, Jodie Pape, Sally Ann 
Campbell, Jeff McClintock, and Natalie, Claudia and Erika Loomis; Five 
great-grandchildren, Hunter McClintock, Nathan Pape, Kaylin McClintock, Howie 
Campbell, and Jozlyne Pape; and a sister, Janet Smith of North Carolina. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Beatrice Atkins. 
 
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Thompson-Smith Funeral 
Home, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. Charles Graham, pastor of the 
First United Methodist Church, officiating. 
 
Following cremation, interment will be in the East Conneaut Cemetery.
