A. Masick Irish
CONNEAUT — Louise A. Masick Irish, 89, formerly of Sunset Drive,
Conneaut, died Saturday, February 28, 2004, at the Country Club Retirement
Center, Ashtabula, OH.
She was born on January 30, 1915 in Erie, PA, a daughter of Henry and Rose
(Heck) Miller and was a resident of Conneaut for 68 years.
She was primarily a homemaker, being a devoted daughter, wife, loving and caring
mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She loved being with her family, and
enjoyed gardening and baking. She was curious, imaginative, and liked to play
board games and cards. She was always concerned about the welfare of others,
both people and animals.
Mrs. Irish skillfully managed numerous apartments for several years, and was a
member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she was active with the Church
Women, the Social Ministry Prayer Chain and the telephone committee.
She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Pillars of Ashtabula; and twin
grandchildren, Wendi and Travis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Edward R. Masick in
1969; her second husband, Howard A. Irish in 2000; a sister, Helen Guckes; and
two brothers, Marty and Henry Miller Jr.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at the MARCY
FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, with
Reverend Dr. Clyde McGee, pastor of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church,
officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Conneaut.
Calling Hour will be one hour prior to the service, starting at 11 a.m. at the
Funeral Home.

Miranda Marie Gonzalez
CONNEAUT — Miranda Marie Gonzalez, infant daughter of Juan and Cathy
(O’Connell) Gonzalez of Conneaut, died at 34 weeks gestation, on Sunday,
February 29, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital, Conneaut.
She is survived by her parents; a brother, Juan Gonzalez, Jr. at home; maternal
grandmother, Patricia O’Connell of Conneaut; paternal grandfather,
Francisco Gonzalez of Puerto Rico; and maternal great-grandmother, Alice Lenhart
of West Springfield, PA. Also surviving are aunts; uncles; and many more distant
relatives.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Richard O’Connell Jr.;
and paternal grandmother, Juana Miranda Gonzalez.
A Private Graveside Service will be held in East Conneaut Cemetery with
Pastor Duane Loomis officiating.

Dennis E. Luce
OCALA, FL — Dennis E. Luce, 49, of Ocala, FL, died Thursday morning, February,
26, 2004, at home.
He was born June 8,1954, in Youngstown, OH and grew up in Ashtabula and North
Kingsville, OH; he was the son of Dean and Hilda (Bedell) Luce.
He was a 1972 graduate of Edgewood High School. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard
in 1975 and served 5 years.
After locating in Ocala, he became an EMT and then a Paramedic and was recently
employed by Marion Medical Associates as a phlebotomist.
Mr. Luce was a member of the Springs Presbyterian Church in Dunnellon and the
First Baptist Church of Ocala.
He enjoyed his children, boating, cars, and people.
Surviving him is his wife, Heather (De Vane) Luce, whom he married December 1,
2001; and children, Dean E. Luce II, Rachel and Kyle De Vane; his parents;
sister, Bonnie Buus of Tollhouse, CA; and first wife, Judy Davis.
Memorial Services were held Monday, March 1, 2004, at HIERS-BAXLEY FUNERAL HOME,
910 SE Silver Springs Boulevard, Ocala, FL 34470. The Reverend Keeth Staton, of
Springs Presbyterian Church in Dunnellon, and the Reverend Phillip Hanes, of

George B. Smith
JEFFERSON — George B. Smith, 90, of Brown Road, Jefferson, OH, passed away
Monday morning, March 1, 2004, at the UHHS Memorial Hospital of Geneva, OH.
Mr. Smith was born on October 20, 1913, the son of Cyrus Henry and Bertha (Hibbler)
Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County.
Mr. Smith was a farmer and small-business man. He was employed by Ashtabula
Rubber Company and Millennium Inorganic Chemicals of Ashtabula Township. He had
many small businesses over the years, including Smith’s Meat Market and an
upholstery shop. He also owned and operated Sheffield Filter, where he washed,
repaired and constructed filter cloths, and started a tarp and awning business.
Mr. Smith was a longtime committee member of the Pioneer Picnic of Pierpont, OH.
He served with the Auxiliary Police force, was a member of the Sheffield Grange,
and was on the official board of the Conneautville, PA, Methodist Church. Mr.
Smith enjoyed raising and showing a team of oxen. He also enjoyed the art of rug
weaving during his retirement years and attended various local festivals to sell
his rugs. He had an avid interest in covered bridges, which spanned back to his
father’s involvement with the construction of the Graham Road Covered Bridge in
1913, the year Mr. Smith was born.
Survivors include one son, Robert B. (Mary C.) Smith of Kingsville, OH;
one daughter, Dr. Elaine (Robert) Cocanower Marlowe of Akron, OH; three
grandchildren, Robert G. (Kim) Smith, Robin M. (Clyde Jr.) Foster, and Andy
Jarvi; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Robinson and Clyde Foster III; three
nieces; three nephews; six great-nieces; nine great-nephews; and several
great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and great-great-great-nieces and
great-great-great-nephews.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jennie (Price) Smith,
in 1986; two brothers, Paul M. and Orlando S. Smith; and one sister, Beatrice
McCroskey.
Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the CHILDS &
WILLIAMS FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1440 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, OH. Pastor
William Bruehl will officiate. Burial will follow in Kelloggsville Cemetery,

Lawrence L. Krenisky
CONNEAUT — Lawrence L. “Larry” Krenisky, 52, of Root Road, Conneaut,
died Sunday, February 29, 2004, at his home following a probable coronary.
He was born on April 16, 1951, in Conneaut, a son of George and Lois
(Mason) Krenisky.
Larry was a lifelong Monroe Township resident and a Veteran of the U.S.
Army. While serving our country, he was among the wounded during the racial
riots in Germany.
During his high school years, he was employed at the former Pelton’s Clothing
Store and had been employed at the former Trans Plastic Corporation. Most
recently, he was employed at Creative Mill Works.
He was one of the charter members of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department
and was a railroad enthusiast, having ridden on the “611 J” train.
He enjoyed our local parks, taking walks and hiking. He especially enjoyed
spending time with his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by two brothers, Dave (Joyce) Krenisky and Edward (Jennifer)
Krenisky, both of Monroe Township; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Andrew.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at St. Mary Catholic
Church, 480 State Street, Conneaut, at 12 p.m. (noon), with Reverend
Raymond Thomas, pastor of the church, officiating. A Celebration of Life will
follow at the MARCY FAMILY CENTER, 180 Harbor Street, Conneaut, from 1 to
3 p.m.

COOPERSTOWN, PA — Alfred D. Boggs, 85, died Wed., March 3, 2004, in Franklin
Hospital, Franklin, PA.
Born Aug. 24, 1918, in Pitcairn, PA, a son of Abner and Drusilla (Tallhamer)
Boggs.
He was retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad as a conductor; and enjoyed
hunting, fishing and gardening.
Mr. Boggs was a Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Esther (Spear) Boggs; daughter, Joanne Keating of
Sierra Madre, CA; 3 grandchildren, Timothy, Shelly and Jon; 2
great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph; and 3 sisters, Doris Lemmo, Betty Kahler
and Fran Metcalf.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolee Greiner of Bloomington, CA; his
parents; and 4 brothers, George and Ted of Conneaut, James of Erie, PA,
and Kenneth of W. Springfield, PA.

Boneda L. Bruckman
SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP — Boneda L. Bruckman, 86, of Dewey Road, Sheffield Township,
died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Geneva.
She was born July 21, 1917 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Vern and LaVern (LaBounty)
Cummings and has been a lifetime area resident.
She was a member of the Gageville United Methodist Church; the Neighborhood
Sunshine Club; the Rebekahs; the Sheffield Grange and the Welsh Pony Society.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Surviving her are two sons, Richard of DesMoines, IA and Vern of Ashtabula;
three daughters, Judy Olah of Ashtabula, Rebecca Harmon of Lexington, KY and
Vickie Newbold of Kingsville; fourteen grandchildren; eleven
great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert Cummings of Conneaut.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon U. Bruckman in
1998; a son, Raymond in 1986; two brothers, Burton and Francis Cummings; and a
sister, Marjorie Mitchonie.

Eugenia E. Marvin
CONNEAUT — Eugenia (Jean) E. Marvin, age 75, of Conneaut, died
Friday, March 5, 2004, at her residence.
Mrs. Marvin was born November 13, 1928 in Tiffin, OH, the daughter of William A.
and Gladys (Heilman) Shafer. She moved to Conneaut in 1944, where her
mother was a teacher at Rowe School. Jean graduated from Conneaut High
School in 1946. She was a Girl Scout for many years and later a leader. She was
also a cheerleader. She worked at the former J.J. Newberry’s, Lake Shore Gas
Company, Webb Manufacturing, Astatic Corporation, Premix and Printcraft.
Jean was a charter member of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Conneaut, the
Conneaut Artist Guild, the Conneaut Colleens, the Conneaut
Quilt Guild, the card club (Bonanza) for over 40 years and enjoyed ceramics and
china painting and oil, water colors and pastels. She was also an officer in the
15th Street School and Dean Avenue School PTA organizations. She enjoyed working
on family genealogy for over 40 years, finding many of her families back in the
16th and 17th centuries, which she shared with the families. Jean belonged to
the Seneca and Wyandot County Genealogy Societies.
Mrs. Marvin was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dorothy Quentmeyer;
and three very dear nephews.
She is survived by her husband, George (Pete), whom she married September 20,
1947; three daughters, Deborah (John) Furry of Conneaut, Julie (Ronald)
Stettler of Painesville and Lisa Marvin of Conneaut; two brothers, George
Shafer of Tiffin, OH and William Shafer of Newaygo, MI; a sister, Esther Drew of
FL; five grandchildren, John III and George Furry, Joshua and Emily Stettler and
Jennifer Shinsky; and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Bennet and Randy Furry.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 10 a.m. at
St. Frances Cabrini Church with Father Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial
will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.

Richard
H. Belnap
ASHTABULA — Richard H. Belnap, age 59 of Ashtabula died March 5, 2004 at the
Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Mr. Belnap was born in Conneaut on July 7, 1944 the son of Henry and
Violet (Coccitto) Belnap. He was a 1962 Conneaut High School graduate and
later he attended Kent State University. Dick served in the United States Army
Reserves and was honorably discharged from the National Guard. He worked for a
short time at the original Premix in Conneaut, the original McDonald's in
Ashtabula, the New York Central Railroad, Rockwell Brake Plant, and also owned
the former Sandpiper Restaurant in Ashtabula and the Colonial Grocery Store in
Geneva-on-the-Lake. He also worked for Western-Southern and the Modern Woodman
Insurance Companies, and for Nassief's Auto Group in both Jefferson and
Ashtabula.
Dick was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Conneaut. He was a
hard core sports fan who loved the Cleveland Browns, Cavs and Indians. He
enjoyed watching soap operas, his favorite being General Hospital. Dick was very
family oriented and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Belnap was preceded in death by his parents.
He was survived by his former wife, Diane (Rigo) Belnap of Ashtabula; two
daughters, Tonya Belnap of Ashtabula and Andrea (& Scott) Penniman of Ashtabula;
a brother, Thomas Belnap of Conneaut; two sisters, Carol Miller of
Conneaut, Joanne Bush (& Matt Crawford) of Conneaut; and two
grandchildren, Zachary and Nicholas Penniman.

C. (Skip) Stambaugh
CONNEAUT — Alvin C. (Skip) Stambaugh, age 56 of Conneaut, died Friday,
March 5, 2004 at the Harrington Care Home.
Mr. Stambaugh was born in Sharon, PA on February 12, 1948 the son of Carlton and
Jennie (Mackey) Stambaugh. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1966 and
attended Youngstown State University. He served for a short time in the United
States Army. He went to work for many years for the Bessemer and Lake Erie
Railroads as a brakeman and later became an Engineer for over 18 years. He was
last employed with the United States Postal Service in Conneaut as a
postal clerk.
He was a life member of the Conneaut Boat Club and was a current Trustee
and former dock master. Skip loved boating on Lake Erie and spending time at the
boat club with his friends.

Wayne
M. Kauppila
CONNEAUT — Wayne M. “Sonny” Kauppila, 79, of Lake Breeze Drive,
Conneaut, OH, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born November 28, 1924 in Conneaut, OH, a son of Waino and Alice
Mae (Morton) Kauppila. A graduate of Conneaut High School, Mr. Kauppila
served with the U.S. Navy as a torpedo men’s mate aboard the U.S.S. Franklin
Roosevelt during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was employed as a firefighter with the Conneaut Fire Department,
retiring as Lieutenant in 1982 after 33 years service. He was also employed
part-time over the years at Allied Resinous, Busy Beaver and Conneaut
Shores Golf Course.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, a life member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post #2836, American Legion Cowle Post #151 and was a member of the
Association of Torpedo Men Mates.
He enjoyed golfing and most sports, and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns,
Cleveland Indians and of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Survivors include two daughters, Kandace L. Kubichek of Conneaut, OH and
Kimberly A. (Bill) Tackett of North Kingsville, OH; four sons, Mark A.
(Linda) of North Kingsville, OH, Joel W. (Jackie) and Brian R. (Janice),
all of Conneaut, OH, and Jeffrey C. of Austin, TX; his sister, Mary Alice
(Bob) Marks of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Donald of Jacksonville, FL and
Richard (MaryLou) of Sarasota, FL; and 11 grandchildren, Matthew Kauppila, Katie
Runyon, Ashley, Brianna, Tommy, Chrissy, Timmy and Bethany Kauppila, Paige
Kubichek, Jacob Tackett and Ame Erdman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, M. Lois Kauppila in 2002,
whom he married October 12, 1946.

CONNEAUT — Marcia E. Louden, 92, of Washington Street, Conneaut, OH,
died Saturday morning, March 6, 2004, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center, Conneaut,
OH.
She was born August 2, 1912 in West Millcreek, PA, and was a daughter of Frank
and Susan (Whitaker) Guernsey.
As a child she lived in West Springfield, Albion and Cherry Hill, PA, and was
employed at Springfield Canning, and was a shipping clerk at the former Astatic
Corporation for 25 years.
She enjoyed making porcelain and ceramic dolls and was known as the “Doll Lady
of Conneaut”. She also enjoyed sewing, and flower and vegetable gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary L. Bailey of Conneaut, OH and Lois
E. Louden of Tuscon, AZ; her son, Perry Louden of Jasper, TN; six grandchildren,
Christine Louden, David Louden, Perry Louden Jr., Shirley Woodard, Brian Bailey
and Susan Fertig; and 13 great-grandchildren, Brandon Nicholson, Kenny Robinson,
Kyle Pellicana, Drew, Chelsea and Ashley Woodard, Peyton Louden, Taylor, Alex
and Micah Louden, and Cooper, Hannah and Clay Fertig.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lewis Alonso Louden in
1985; two sisters, Olive Houghtaling and Gloria Louden; and two brothers, George
and Clarence Guernsey.

Robert
E. Marshall
CONNEAUT — Robert E. Marshall, 65, of Tallmadge, OH, passed away
unexpectedly on Friday, March 5, 2004.
He was born in Conneaut, OH, to his parents, Robert C. Marshall and
Margaret (Vacco) Marshall (Mullen) on September 13, 1938. Bob was a 1956
graduate of Conneaut High School. Soon after graduation he joined the
U.S. Army with friends from Conneaut.
He returned to Conneaut and became a patrolman for the City of
Conneaut Police Department. Bob then worked at the East Ohio Gas Company for
10 years, followed by the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company for 7 years
before realizing his dream of owning his own business. In 1983, Bob and his wife
created the Rainbow Cafe, which quickly became the favorite spot in town for
food and drink, best known for its great pizza and stromboli. He then departed
Conneaut in 1987 to manage the Ashtabula Bar Supply for 5 years.
In 1992, Bob relocated to Gulfport, MS, and was employed by Ingles Shipyard
before returning to Northeast Ohio to be closer to his family. Bob worked for
Greg Sweet Chevrolet for two years before attending HVAC school in 1997. He then
worked for Quail Hollow Resort in Painesville in the maintenance department for
three years. Bob decided to relocate to Shaker Heights to become an apartment
maintenance supervisor in 2000. In 2001, Bob moved to Akron to be closer to his
children and was employed by Summit Management Services as a maintenance
supervisor at Brook Ledge Apartments at the time of his death.
He attended St. Eugene’s Church in Cuyahoga Falls, OH and enjoyed the company of

to “have a little something” in the way of food and drink. Bob defined himself
through hard work and strived for perfection. He was a responsible man, husband,
and father. Bob always kept trying to achieve a better life for his family.

Jill (Dan) Newman of Norton, OH; two sisters, Gail (Ed) Mathews of Monroe
Township, OH and Paula Loyer of Erie, PA; and three grandsons, Zachary Marshall,
Clayton and Cole Newman.

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Gladys (Gladdy) Mae Eldred, 65, of Stanhope-Kelloggsville
Road, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. She went peacefully at
her home with her loving family present.
Gladys married Richard C. Eldred Sr. on November 6, 1954. She was a lifelong
resident of Pierpont and Kingsville. She was the only child of
Myron and Flora (Bromfield) Lewis. She, her husband and family own and operate
Eldred and Sons Dairy, and she was very active in the day-to-day operations of
the farm. She enjoyed the outdoors, bowling, watching the Cleveland Indians,
playing cards, attending church and, most of all, spending time with her family.
She is survived by her seven children and 15 grandchildren: Son, Richard Jr. and
wife Janice (Rinto) and children, Cassandra and Justin, of Kingsville; son,
Lonnie and wife Robi (McClintock) and daughter, Danielle, of Phoenix, Arizona;
daughter, Joyce Newhart and husband Terry Sr. and children, Terry Jr. and wife,
Lisa, who are expecting the first great-grandchild, Todd, all of Jefferson; and
Travis of Dyess Air Force Base in Texas; daughter, Julie Funk and husband, Gary,
and children, Elizabeth and Amanda, of Clintonville, Wisconsin; son, Myron and
wife, Rosemarie (Polchin), and children, Raeann and Katherine, of Kingsville;
son Rodney and wife, Rachel (King), and children, Alexis and Zachery, of
Conneaut; and daughter, Joanne Stover and husband, Steve, and children,
Miranda, Morgan and Megan, all of Conneaut.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, in 1998; mother, Flora Lewis,
in 1998; and father, Myron Lewis, in 1972.
The funeral is 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the Kelloggsville
Church of the Nazarene, 4841 Route 84. The Reverend Jerry Webb, Pastor, will

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Virginia R. Robertson, 83, passed away on Sunday, March
7, 2004.
She was born in East Sparta, Ohio, on November 23, 1920.
Virginia is preceded in death by her father, Henry Fetters; her mother, Maude
Brown; a sister, Frances Unkefer; a brother, Vincent Lucas and her husband,
Allen Robertson.
Virginia lived with her husband and two children in Conneaut, Ohio,
before retiring in 1976 to Brownsville, Texas.
Virginia is survived by her son, Tom Robertson of Geneva, and her daughter, Jan
Robertson, who now lives in Houston, Texas. She has three grandsons, Bret of
Greensboro, N.C.; Byron and Tyrone of Geneva; five great-grandchildren; Jack
Lucias of Montana, her brother; and two nieces, Nancy Unkefer and Normal
Pavelzik, both of Canton.
Virginia was very active at Portway Baptist Church while living in Brownsville.
She also enjoyed activities at Rio Mobile Home Park. She was known as the Granny
Red Ant at Cummings. For years, she was their number-one fan.
She loved to attend athletic events all over the valley, supporting all the
youth. She loved to paint and do arts and crafts with friends. She loved to
travel and visit friends throughout the United States.
She was a past matron of the Rose Chapter of Eastern Star in Conneaut.
She was an officer in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and a Rose Bud Clown.

JEFFERSON — Aili S. “Alice” Makepeace, 83, formerly of Conneaut, died
Tuesday afternoon, March 9, 2004, at the Jefferson Geriatric Center in
Jefferson.
She was born November 13, 1920, in Conneaut, and was a daughter of Jacob
and Emma (Humalainen) Soini.
A 1938 graduate of Conneaut High School, she was employed as payroll
clerk at the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir,
and was a member of the altar guild, and served as church treasurer.
She was also a member of the Women of Finnish Heritage and enjoyed golfing,
bowling and her grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Kananen of Conneaut and Barbara
Wing of Grove City, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard, in 1997; her
son, Richard, in 1996; her sister Senja J. O’Neill; her brother, Arne J. Soini;
a grandson, John Szalai Jr.; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Kananen.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL

where she resided until 1994 when she went to live with her great-nephew, Arthur
Norton Jr., in Worthington, OH.
Helen was a Warren High School graduate and attended business school for two
years. She worked for GE Lamp Works in Warren for 30 years before retiring in
1963. She married Stephen Franek in 1951.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Clarence
Fenton; her sister, Lila Clark; her niece, Ida Rae Jones; and her nephew, Calvin
Fenton.
Helen is survived by nieces, Blanche Norton of Worthington, Helen Armstrong of
Pierpont, Frances Armstrong of Conneaut and Betty (Calvin) Fenton of
Portland, ME; nephews, Albert Fenton of Aransas Pass, TX and John Clark of Ivins,
UT; a great-niece, Dorothy (Paul) Wheeler; great-nephew, Arthur Norton where she
resided for over 8 1/2 years; and many other nieces and nephews ranging from
great to great, great, great, great.
She was loved by all! Helen enjoyed spending birthdays, holidays, etc. with
family as well as reading, cooking and crocheting.

CONNEAUT — Mary Louise Phelps, 83, died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at

She was born December 15, 1920 in Cleveland, the daughter of John and Katherine
(Maurer) Frank and had been an Ashtabula resident most of her life.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as the Ladies Wear Department Manager for
Hills for 15 years.
Mrs. Phelps enjoyed reading, gardening, antiques, tole painting, quilts, rugs,
and woodworking.
Her survivors include two children, William Frank (wife, Kathie) Phelps of
Lancaster, PA and Mary Louise (husband, Lee) Phelps Shinault of North
Kingsville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Phelps, Sr. in 1976; one son, Ray
Phelps, Jr. in 1994; her grandson, Devin Shinault in 1993; and her parents.

CONNEAUT — Former Conneaut, OH, resident, Harold Marlowe, 88, died Sunday
evening, March 14, 2004, at the Sunrise Assisted Living in Erie, PA.
He was born October 5, 1915, in Batavia, NY, and was a son of Edwin and Lily (Shearsmith)
Marlowe.
A graduate of Union City High School, he had resided in Conneaut for over
50 years, where he was employed at the former Strong Steam and later retired
from the former Emco-Wheaton Corporation as purchasing manager. He also served
as executive director of the Conneaut Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Marlowe was a member of St. Mary Church, where he served as usher, and was
president of the P.T.A. of St. Mary School. He was affiliated with the
Republican Party and served as Conneaut City Councilman and was also
Council President at one time. He was also a member of the Conneaut Kiwanis Club
and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed reading, swimming, golfing and music.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen (Bob) Snider of Elyria, OH, Jean
(Pat) Christie of Erie, PA, and Mary (Kenneth) Witt of Erie, PA; two sons, Bill
(Maribeth) of Mentor, OH, and Bob (Cheryl) of Willoughby, OH; 12 grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Florence, in
1995; his sister, Winifred Burnett; and three brothers, Charles, Arthur and
Douglas Marlowe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at St.
Mary Church, 480 State Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Raymond

OCALA, FL — Former North Kingsville resident Dorma Faye (Means) Tuttle,
75, passed away at her home Tuesday morning, March 16, 2004.
She was born September 28, 1928, in Conneaut, OH, the daughter of Laurel
H. and Alice P. (Carmichael) Means.
A 1946 graduate of Conneaut High School, she went on to earn degrees from
Kent State University (A.B., 1949; B.S., 1964) and Edinboro State University (M.E.,
1968). She received her Superintendent Certificate in 1974. She was a teacher
from 1949 to 1953 at North Kingsville Elementary School; from 1954 to
1956 at Broad Street School in Conneaut; and from 1960 to 1968 at
Southeast Elementary, also in Conneaut. In 1968, she became Principal at
Monroe Elementary School as well as teaching 6th Grade there. She
simultaneously held positions as Principal at Southeast, West Main and Amboy
Elementary Schools while, additionally, serving as the Administrative Assistant
to the Superintendent. She retired from the Conneaut School System in
1985.
She was a longtime member of the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church,
Village Green Golf Course, and was a former Trustee of Brown Memorial Hospital.
She enjoyed golfing, bridge, traveling, and basket making.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard; sons John R. (Krista)
Tuttle of Pickerington, Ohio, and Steven B. (Cheryl) Tuttle of North Royalton,
Ohio; sisters Alice Jane (Means) Anderson Roecker of Brooksville, FL, and Dr.
Mary (Means) Ford of Chagrin Falls, OH; plus eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gordon Means and Richard Means.

ASHTABULA — Glenn Robert Van Buren, 49, of North Ridge East, died unexpectedly

He was born October 20, 1954, in Painesville, the son of Gene and Barbara (Synenberg)
Van Buren, and had been a longtime Ashtabula resident.
A 1974 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he had been employed at RMI for many
years and recently worked for ESAB.
Glenn and his wife have always been there for others, and they loved to attend
church at the Lily of the Valley, Old Regular Baptist Church, where Glenn joined
on March 30, 1986.
A terrific husband, father and papa, he enjoyed traveling, spending time with
his family, doing yard work for his mother, and attending his children’s school
activities.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette (Hamilton), whom he married July 20, 1980;
three sons, Ron Van Buren of Las Vegas, and Glen “Rob” Van Buren Jr. and Shawn
(Holly) Van Buren, both of Ashtabula; two daughters, Melissa (Jose) Padilla and
Trisha Van Buren, both of Ashtabula; four grandchildren, Adrianna and Tatiana
Padilla, and Abriel and Autumn Van Buren; three brothers, Gene “Russ” (Jan) and
Gregg, both of Ashtabula, and Gary (Linda) of Kingsville; two sisters, Cheryl
(Jim) Reidel of Madison and Sandy (Bob) Fortune of Geneva; and his mother,

early Wednesday morning, March 17, 2004, at the Mentor Way Nursing Home, Mentor,

Mrs. Vacco was born January 15, 1911, in Conneaut, Ohio, the daughter of
Stephen and Anna (Papernik) King. She graduated from St. Mary High School in
Conneaut. Margaret worked at the former Astatic Corporation as an assembler
for over 24 years, until her retirement.
Margaret was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut, the
Senior Citizens Center, and she also liked to paint watercolors and play bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony Vacco, in 1986,
whom she married November 24, 1937, in St. Mary Church; five brothers, Edward
King, Stephen King, Cyril King, Albert King and Edward King; and two sisters,
Helen Smith and Ann Purdy.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Vacco of Placentia, California; a daughter,
Beth and Ben Morano of Mentor, Ohio; two sisters, Lucille Bartone of Conneaut
and Virginia Baker of Buffalo; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

ERIE — John G. Howell, 64, of Monroe Township, OH, died Thursday evening
March 18, 2004 at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA, following a brief illness.
He was born April 22, 1939, in New Martinsville, West Virginia, and was a son of
Otto and Dorothy (Neff) Howell.
Prior to moving to Monroe Township, he resided in Applecreek, OH.
He was employed primarily as head mechanic by the Ohio Department of
Transportation, retiring as an inspector after 23 years of service.
A Monroe Township resident since 1972, he was a charter member,
treasurer, and former Fire Chief of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.
He enjoyed his family and grandchildren and talking with them on the computer.
He also enjoyed his dog “Bubba”, bingo, traveling, eating out, camping, and
wintering in Lake Wales, FL.
Survivors include his wife Ruth (Ingram) Howell, whom he married June 16, 1962;
two daughters Robin (Rick) Welker of Ashtabula and Bonnie (Dan) Welker of
Conneaut; his son John Earl Howell of Monroe Township; his sister
Mary Doyle of Cleveland, TX; two brothers, Charles Howell of Marshallville, OH,
and Joseph Howell; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Thomas, Jeremy, Tiffany,
Douglass, Samantha, and Mikey Welker; and a great granddaughter Marissa Forbes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Franklin, Harry,
Donnie (Shike), and Paul Howell.

ELSIE L. CAMPBELL
CONNEAUT — Elsie L. Campbell, 95, formerly of Marshall Street died March
18, 2004 at the Inn Conneaut Health Center.
Elsie was born in Sheffield Township, April 10, 1908, the daughter of the late
Lewis and Edna (Lewis) Olin.
She had resided in Conneaut since 1943, prior to that she made her home
in Albion, Pa.
Mrs. Campbell was a homemaker and a member of the Lakeview United Methodist
Church.
She was a graduate of Kingsville High School and was a member of the
Salem Rebekah Lodge #385 and also Orion Order of Eastern Star #12.
Mrs. Campbell enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and cards, but most of all she
enjoyed playing the harmonica and spending time with her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Norma J. (Jack) Carr of Pierpont, OH.,
Paula Carole (Anthony) Zappitelli of Conneaut, a son Thomas C. Campbell
of Conneaut, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren.
Beside her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Paul C. in 1992, two
sisters, Belle Lillie and Glade Makynen and four brothers, Elwin, Neal, Newell
and Paul Olin.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL
HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. David Miller, Pastor of
the Lakeview United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Friend may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The family suggests the memorials be made in her name to the church, Hospice of
Western Reserve or the activity department at the Inn Conneaut Health
Center.

KINGSVILLE — Florence E. Cox, 85, of Harbor Street, Conneaut, OH, died
Friday morning, March 19, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home,
Kingsville, OH.
She was born March 26, 1918, in Conneaut and was a daughter of Claude E.
and Ada May (Bunce) Wheattall.
Mrs. Cox was a member of First Assembly of God, a 50-year member of the Women of
the Moose, and a member of the North Amboy Birthday Club.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading, traveling, and being with her grandchildren and
great grandchildren.
Survivors include her son Gerald L. Cox of Conneaut, OH; two sisters, Mae
Cichocki and Eleanor Szuchmanski both of Erie, PA; her former daughter-in-law
Suzan Waits of Longmont, CO; 9 grandchildren, Daniel E. Cox of Broomfield, CO,
Lisa L. Bicknell of Loveland, CO, Jessica Adler of Frederick, CO, Ronda Soules
of Lyons, Neb., Roland Waits of Georgetown, TX, Pamela Bean of Ashtabula,
Michael Allen of Jefferson, Stephen Allen and Shelly Allen both of Ashtabula;
nine great grandchildren; and her best friend and caregiver June Georskey of
Conneaut.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ralph L. Cox in 1988; her
son Ralph E. “Eddy” Cox; and her brother Claude Wheattall.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2004 at the MARCY
FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICE, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev.

THELMA L. HOTCHKISS
CONNEAUTVILLE, PA — Thelma L. (Perk) Hotchkiss, 97, formerly of Albion, PA, died
on Monday, March 22, 2004, at Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville, PA.
She was born in Conneautville, PA, on March 7, 1907, the daughter of the late
Marsh and Florence Munger Beebe.
She attended Grace United Methodist Church, Albion, PA.
Prior to her retirement several years ago, she owned Perk's Dairybar in
Springboro, PA, for 31 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Hotchkiss, on June 14, 1994; two
brothers, Earl Beebe and Gordon Beebe; two sisters, Helen Mead and Margaret
Jones; a grandson, Daniel Hotchkiss; and a granddaughter, Alexis Sanders.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane Featherolf, Conneaut, OH, and
Jeanne Connors, Albion, PA; and a son, Alvin Hotchkiss and his wife, Daphna, of
Baytown, TX. She is further survived by ten grandchildren, several
great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

VIRGINIA L. PARKOMAKI
CONNEAUT — Virginia L. “Ginny” Parkomaki, 58, of Center Road, Monroe
Township, OH, died Monday afternoon, March 22, 2004, at the Austinburg Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center, Austinburg Township, OH. She had been ill with
Multiple Sclerosis since 1972.
Mrs. Parkomaki was born November 1, 1945, in Conneaut, OH, and was a
daughter of J. Fred Perry and Kathryn L. (Herget) Perry Thompson.
A 1963 graduate of Conneaut High School, she had worked at one time as a
bookkeeper for the former Dean Wible Motor Sales in Conneaut.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rose Chapter #22, Order of
Eastern Star, and the Mothers Achievement League.
She enjoyed her family, camping, traveling and yardwork.
Survivors include her husband, Jack (Donald J.) Parkomaki, whom she married May
15, 1965; two daughters, Tammy (Jim) Monday of Ashtabula, OH, and Heidi
Parkomaki of Conneaut, OH; her son, John (Chrissy) Parkomaki of Cranberry
Township, PA; two sisters, Anne (Buck) Gilbert of Buffalo, WY, and Jean (Dennis)
Turner of Chardon, OH; and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Emma and Jacob
Parkomaki. Also surviving are A.F.S. exchange student, Pat Dearing, wife Nadine
and two sons, Jordon and Connor of Lisarow, New South Wales, Australia.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

CONNEAUT — Jennie A. Palagyi, age 87, of Conneaut, died Tuesday,
March 23, 2004, at The Villa at the Lake in Conneaut.
Mrs. Palagyi was born in Cleveland, OH, on September 17, 1916, the daughter of
Alex and Johana (Kepec) Milac.
Mrs. Palagyi was employed with the former Goldette and then as a receptionist at
Brown Memorial Hospital and as a Gray Lady in the X-Ray Department.
She was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut. She
enjoyed preparing all ethnic foods, gardening, canning, and attending polka
functions with her husband, Jim.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Palagyi, whom she
married November 7, 1936, at St. Mary Church; and two brothers, Frank Milac and
Joseph Marn.
Mrs. Palagyi is survived by a daughter, Judith Ann (Robert) Brown of Conneaut;
one brother, Alex Milac of Dayton, OH; a sister, Mary Berfield of Conneaut;
a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Godfrey; and nieces and nephews, Jack and Gloria
Berfield of Delray Beach, FL, Connie and Paul Newman of Dayton, OH, Dr. Charles
Marn of Ann Arbor, MI, Michael Marn of Cleveland, James Marn of Pinkerington,
OH, and Joseph Marn of Cincinnati, OH.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 26, 2004, at 10
a.m. at St. Mary Church, Conneaut, with Father Raymond Thomas

EDITH D. NAPPI
ASHTABULA — Edith D. Nappi, 83, a resident of Ashtabula, died Tuesday, March 23,
2004, at the Austinburg Rehabilitation Center.
Born December 23, 1920, in Conneaut, OH, she was the daughter of Cosmo
and Micheline (Delemmo) DiBaggio.
Mrs. Nappi worked for the Nickle Plate Railroad during World War II, the former
Astatic Company and the box factory in Ashtabula. She and her husband owned and
operated a doughnut shop on Center Street in Ashtabula. After retirement, they
spent their winters in Lakeland, FL.
She enjoyed ceramics, loved the Cleveland Indians and was a member of Saint
Joseph Church in Ashtabula.
Survivors include a sister, Helen Meyers of Conneaut; brothers, Albert
DiBaggio of Nashville, TN, and Anthony DiBaggio of San Antonio, TX; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Nappi; son, Richard;
twin brother, Albert; and sister, Angeline Nappi.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2004, in Saint Joseph
Church, 3330 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, at 2 p.m., with burial to follow at St.
Joseph Cemetery.

THOMAS E. SCRUGGS
ASHTABULA — Deacon Thomas Edward Scruggs, 61, was the third-oldest child of 19
children of the late Reverend Joseph and Thelma Scruggs.
Thomas was born on April 14, 1942, in Nashville, TN. Thomas and his family moved
to Huntsville, AL, and later to North Kingsville, OH. He departed this
life on Sunday, March 21, 2004, after a prolonged illness at the Cleveland
Clinic in Cleveland, OH.
Thomas graduated from Rowe High School in 1963. After graduation, he
became a resident of Ashtabula, where he retired as an Auto Detailer in 1989
from Nassief Pontiac, formerly known as Child Motors.
He had accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized at the Meridian
Bottom in Huntsville, AL. He was a member of the Peoples Baptist Church, where
he served as Deacon for many years. Deacon Scruggs enjoyed bowling,
roller-skating, golfing, playing baseball and working. He truly loved the Lord,
helping others and cleaning cars.
Survivors are his wife, Barbara Ann (Cole); one daughter, Tasheca O’Nitra
BaChelle (Antonio) Young of Lorain, OH; two sons, Kevis Maurice Scruggs of
Elyria, OH, and Tony Ross of Oklahoma City, OK; eight brothers, Joseph (Loisteen),
Willie (Fannie), Isaac and Brian (Amy), all of Ashtabula, OH, Robert (Joann) of
Geneva, OH, Leevale (Kim) of Cleveland, OH, Steve (Melanie) and Gary Lee of
Columbus, OH; nine sisters, Lucille (Hank) Byrd of Los Angeles, CA, Thelma (Nate)
Jones, Mary Wells, Haroldine (Henry) Barnum, Janet Scruggs, Florence Grady and
Connie Lee Scruggs, all of Ashtabula, Lois Wiggins and Tanya (Jack) Wilson, both
of Columbus, OH; two grandsons, Dominic Rice of Lorain, OH, and Mikal Ross of
Oklahoma City, OK; and one granddaughter, Tonia Ross of Oklahoma City, OK. He
has six godchildren, Daryl McDonald of Sandusky, OH, Shalisa Lewis of Kent, OH,
Jamar McMillian of Atlanta, GA, Deundra Dupree of Erie, PA, Min. Kenny Tyler of
Elyria, OH, and Kieran Jones of Ashtabula, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Deacon Scruggs was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend and Mrs. Joseph
Scruggs; and one brother, Kevin Scruggs.

CONNEAUT — Albert Johnson Sr., 87, of Lake Road, Conneaut, OH,
died Wednesday morning, March 24, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 2, 1916, in Conneaut, OH, a son of Peter Emil and Anna
Belle (Stearns) Johnson.
A 1935 graduate of Conneaut High School, he sailed on the Great Lakes for
several years before working for 30 years at General Electric Base Plant in
Conneaut, retiring in 1985.
A member of First Baptist Church in Conneaut, he was also formerly active
in school groups in which his children and grandchildren were involved. He
enjoyed visiting with friends at the City News, farming, and was a fan of the
Cleveland Indians and Browns.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen V. (Lane) Johnson, whom he married February
4, 1941; two daughters, Sharon K. (Earl) Karr of Conneaut, OH, and Irene
M. Johnson of Woodbridge, VA; his son, Albert Johnson Jr. of Conneaut,
OH; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren;
and his only other relative, cousin Evelyn Marburger of Humboldt, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Rachel Dixon.

OKEY M. WEBER
MONROE TOWNSHIP — Okey M. Weber, 66, of Root Road, Monroe Township,
OH, died at his home Saturday evening, March 27, 2004.
He was born February 23, 1938 in Wheeling, WV, a son of George T. and Belva F. (Schaub)
Weber.
He was employed for many years at Pinney Dock and Transport in Ashtabula, and
worked on the road crew for Monroe Township for 12 years, retiring in
2003.
He enjoyed fishing, working on vehicles, puzzles, playing cards and visiting
local fairs, festivals and horse pulls.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia A. (Hanson) Weber with whom he celebrated
their 46th wedding anniversary on March 15; his father, George Weber; two
daughters, Donna (Mark) Moore and Kathy (Matthew) Moore, all of Conneaut,
OH; four sons, Dale (Vicky) Weber of Ashtabula, OH, Okey Jr. (Vicki) of
Conneaut, OH, Terry (Renay) of Dorset, OH and Timothy (Melissa) of
Conneaut, OH; a brother, George (Clara) Weber of Ashtabula, OH; four
sisters, Linda (Guy) Blankenship of Union, WV, Sharon (Chris) Judge of PeeWee,
KY, Diana Morey of Lakewood, OH and Nancy Toy of Ashtabula, OH; 10
grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1998; a sister, MaryLu; and a
grandson, Michael Weber.

Kelloggsville Church of the Nazarene, 4841 State Route 84, Monroe Township, with

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Nancy L. Scalise, 68, of Dunbar Avenue, Saybrook Township,
died Monday, March 29, 2004, at her home after a long illness.
She was born October 20, 1935, in Lake City, PA, the daughter of Samuel and
Irene (Gehtz) Tome.
She was employed with the Ashtabula Area City School District, in the Central
Kitchen, as head cook until her retirement in 1999. She also cooked at different
summer camps, including Camp Calvary and Wing Foot Camp.
She enjoyed bowling, camping, baking and gardening. She was also a big sports
fan, enjoying the Browns and Indians.
Surviving her are two sons, Kevin (Darlene) Scalise and James (Annette) Scalise,
both of Ashtabula; two daughters, Valerie Tackett of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Lisa
(Keith) Stewart of Jefferson; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Scott, Mindy, Branden,
Nicole, Tyler, Jeremy and Amber; her companion, Jay Kinney; and a brother, Sam
Tome of Lake City, PA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, in 1980; and by a
brother, Donald “Slugger” Scalise.
Funeral Service will be Thursday, April 1, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Pentecostal
Church of God, Cook Road, Ashtabula, with Reverend Kenneth Roberts officiating.
