BERTHA E. HORVATH 
   
CONNEAUT — Bertha E. (Tuci) Horvath, age 79, of Harbor Street, 
Conneaut, OH, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in UHHS-Brown Memorial Hospital,
Conneaut. 
 
Born in Cleveland, OH, on February 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late 
Steve and Bertha (Nyilas) Horvath, and had resided in this area for most of her 
life. 
 
She was employed at the General Electric Base Plant in Conneaut, and 
retired as Executive Secretary of RMI in Ashtabula after 30 years of service. 
 
Miss Horvath was a member of the Hungarian Evangelical Reformed United Church of 
Christ, and the Rose Chapter Order of Eastern Star #22. 
 
She wintered in Florida, enjoyed bus trips, and animals, especially Lexi, her 
Pomeranian. She had a very special love for her great niece, Analynn. 
 
Survivors include her brother, Steve E. Horvath; a nephew, Stephen Horvath; a 
niece, Susanne Horvath; and great-niece, Analynn Horvath-DiFilippo, all of 
Conneaut. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents. 
 
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the 
Hungarian Evangelical Reformed Church, on the corner of Lake Road and Harbor 
Street, Conneaut, with the Reverend Robert Leonard, Pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. 
 
Friends may call today, Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL 
HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, from 6 to 8 p.m.

JOHN P. PAL 
ASHTABULA — John P. Pal, age 83, of East 29th Street, Ashtabula, OH, died 
Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. 
 
He was born December 15, 1920 in Ashtabula, OH, the son of Julius and Bertha (Mosko) 
Pal and has been a lifetime area resident. 
 
Mr. Pal was a Veteran of World War II serving in the Merchant Marines. 
 
He was employed with the Pennsylvania Ore Docks in Ashtabula, sailing the Great 
Lakes on Ore Boats until his retirement. 
 
He is a member of the Second Congregational Church of Christ of Ashtabula. He 
enjoyed gardening and was a baseball fan. 
 
Survivors include his wife Oleta (Mourer) Pal, who he married August 8, 1953; a 
son, Gary John Pal of Kings Mountain, NC; two grandchildren, Allen John Pal and 
Nicole Rae Pal; and three brothers, Alexander Pal of Plymouth Township, Joseph 
Pal of Ashtabula and Jim Pal of Plymouth Township. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother, Julius Pal. 
 
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the ROSS-BILLMAN 
FUNERAL HOME, 526 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, OH, with Reverend Glen Warner, 
of the Second Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial 
will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.

ROBERT R. HARWOOD 
   
ASHTABULA — Robert R. Harwood, age 88, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Park Haven 
Home.  
 
He was born April 17, 1916 in Cleveland, OH, the son of Robert and Clara (Zikovsky) 
Harwood and had been an area resident most of his life.  
 
A graduate of Ashtabula High School, he worked as a machinist for Thompson 
Products (now TRW).  
 
He had attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses when he had been able.
 
 
A member of the Saybrook Rod and Gun Club, he enjoyed playing cards and board 
games, horse racing, and spending time with his grandchildren.  
 
His survivors include one daughter, Lora L. Veres of Ashtabula; three 
grandchildren, Anne (Dolgosh) Starcher, Caryl (Dolgosh) Sheldon, and Cheryl (Dolgosh) 
Adang; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one 
half-brother, William Forte’ of Florida.  
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora (Hawkins); one daughter, Susan Jean 
Harwood; one great-grandchild, Michael Adang; one brother, John Harwood; one 
half-brother, James Forte’; one half-sister, Jean Lexa; and his parents.  
 
A service will be held 12 p.m., Noon, on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at the Edgewood 
Alliance Church, 3137 East Center Street, North Kingsville. Reverend 
Kenneth Roberts, Pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God, will officiate. 
Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville.  
 
Calling Hours will be at the Church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of 
service.

CONNEAUT — Former Conneaut resident, Frances H. Church, age 77, of 
Kawkawlin, MI, died November 15, 2003, in Bay City, MI, following a short battle 
with cancer. 
 
She was born in Bangor Township, MI, and was a daughter of Edward and Agnes (Libera) 
Church. She was a longtime resident of Conneaut before moving to Bay 
City, MI, to live with her brother, George. 
 
While in Conneaut, Mrs. Church was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, 
and enjoyed playing bingo and traveling. 
 
Survivors include her daughter, Nanci Church of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL; two 
sons, John (wife Phyllis) Church of Fayetteville, NC and Nic (wife Debbie) 
Church of Conneaut, OH; her sister, Pat (husband Larry) Ollett of Naples, 
FL; her brother, George Libera of Kawkawlin, MI; and eight grandchildren. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony “T.C.” Church in 
1980; and two daughters, Linda Church in 1954 and Suzanne Church-Wright in 2003. 
 
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in 
St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Raymond Thomas, pastor 
of St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini Churches, officiating.

CONNEAUT — Pearl R. Natto, age 84, of Wrights Avenue, Conneaut, 
OH, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. 
 
Born in Conneaut, June 4, 1919, the daughter of the late Frank and 
Elizabeth (Sivula) Humalainen, she had been a Conneaut resident her 
entire life. 
 
Mrs. Natto owned and operated the Deluxe Dry Cleaners in Conneaut with 
her husband for 39 years. 
 
She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, the Loyal Order of Moose #472, 
and the Fraternal Order of Eagles #408. In her leisure time, she enjoyed arts 
and crafts. 
 
She is survived by two sons, Thomas A. of Conneaut, and Daniel A. of 
Cleveland; six grandchildren, Daniel, Timothy, Patrick, Mellissa, Joel and Cindy 
Natto; several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Humalainen of 
Conneaut. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Milo A. Natto; 
six brothers; and three sisters. 
 
Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 4, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the 
THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, OH, with the

CLARENCE H. MILLER 
 
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Clarence H. Miller, age 94, of North Ridge East, Ashtabula 
Township, OH, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at the Country Club Retirement Center 
in Ashtabula. 
 
He was born June 1, 1910 in Plymouth Township, OH, the son of Ralph G. and 
Bessie (Case) Miller and has been a lifetime area resident. He graduated from 
the Grand River Institute of Austinburg in 1929 and was a Veteran of World War 
II, serving in the U.S. Navy. 
 
He was employed for 47 years with the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company 
until his retirement in 1975. 
 
He is a member of the Kingsville Presbyterian Church; Orion Lodge #353 
F&AM; Western Reserve Chapter #8 RAM; Conneaut Council #40; Columbian 
Commandery #52 Knights Templar; Past Patron of Orion Chapter #12 OES; Scottish 
Rite Valley of Cleveland; and Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland. He was a member of 
the Ashtabula Township Zoning Board during the 1960’s. 
 
He enjoyed gardening, running, traveling and photography. 
 
Surviving him are four granddaughters, Billie Moore, Barbara Minns, Bonnie 
Foderetti and Bobbi Weeks; five great-grandchildren; one 
great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Tranie; his second 
wife, Opal; his son, Charles William Moore; his brother, Howard Miller; and his 
sister, Marion Warren. 
 
Funeral Services will be Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 12 p.m. (noon) at the ROSS-BILLMAN

CONNEAUT – Lillian M. Dibbs, 90, formerly of Park Ave., Conneaut, 
died Thursday, June 3, 2004 in the Cuyahoga Falls Hospital, Cuyahoga Falls. 
 
Born in Worcester, MA, Nov. 10, 1913, the daughter of Shikrey and Sadie Debs, 
she had resided in Conneaut since 1940, for the past four years she had 
resided in Stow, OH. 
 
Mrs. Dibbs was a member of the former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Conneaut. 
She and her husband owned and operated the Anchor Inn for forty-five years.  
 
In her leisure time she enjoyed reading, writing, watching the Cleveland 
Indians, reading and writing poetry and especially being with her grandchildren. 
 
She is survived by her daughter Lenore Zimmer of Stow; her son Richard Dibbs of 
Huron; four grandchildren, Mark Dibbs, Karyn Sullivan, Ryan and Michael Catrow; 
three step-grandchildren, Brandon, Bryce and Kaitlyn Zimmer and three 
great-grandchildren. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Dibbs 
and eleven brothers and sisters. 
 
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 7 at the THOMPSON-SMITH 
FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut. Tim Kraus of the Church of 
Christ will be officiating.

ASHTABULA — Peter A. Tredent, age 92, a resident of Ashtabula, died Saturday, 
June 5, 2004, at the Austinburg Rehabilitation Center. 
 
Born April 21, 1912 in Ashtabula, OH, he was the son of the late Domenic and 
Mary Lapillo Tredent. 
 
Mr. Tredent retired from the Reliance Electric. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Tredent; son, John A. (Susan) of Mentor; 
daughter, Mary Ellen (John) Meehl of Painesville Township; brothers, Daniel and 
John M. Tredent, both of Ashtabula; and several nieces and nephews. 
 
He is preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Domenic; brothers, Anthony 
and Michael Tredent; and sisters, Virginia Incorvia, Carmel Tredent, Niles

CONNEAUT — Lee J. Rakowski, age 56, of Ashtabula, OH, died Saturday 
evening, June 5, 2004, at The Villa At The Lake in Conneaut, OH. 
 
He was born January 15, 1948 in Cleveland, OH, and was the son of Stanley J. and 
Mary (Javorich) Rakowski Golic. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army and served in 
Viet Nam. 
 
An Ashtabula resident for the past 10 years, he was employed at Morton Salt, 
retiring in January 2004. 
 
He was a member of In Country Viet Nam Vets; the Army and Navy Union Garrison 
#411 in Ashtabula; and enjoyed playing cards, fishing, playing pool, and 
supporting other Viet Nam Vets. 
 
Survivors include his mother, Mary V. Golic of Conneaut, OH; a son, Brian 
J. Rakowski of Ashtabula, OH; his sister, Joyce S. Greene of Conneaut, 
OH; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. 
 
He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley J. Rakowski; his sister, 
Patricia M. Passerella; his step-father, William J. Golic; and his grandparents,

Born October 7, 1974 in Ashtabula, OH, he was the son of Theodore N. and the 
late Joyce (Meadors) Keyes. He was a graduate of Ashtabula High School.  
 
Eugene enjoyed camping with his son, deep sea fishing, and his family.  
 
Survivors include his wife, Bettina; two sons, Preston Matthew Keyes and Dylan 
Michael Keyes, both of Ashtabula; father, Theodore N. Keyes of Ashtabula; a 
sister, April Bowen of Vass, NC; two brothers, Richard Keyes and Charles Shaw,

CONNEAUT — Anne E. Weber, age 85, of Austinburg Road, Ashtabula, OH, died 
Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula, OH. 
 
She was born August 29, 1918, in Conneaut, OH, a daughter of the late 
Hjalmer and Hilma (Orrenmaa) Rankinen. She spent most of her life in Conneaut 
and, for the past three years, had made her home with her daughter, Lynda, and 
her husband, Earl, in Ashtabula. 
 
She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Royal Neighbors of 
America. 
 
During her lifetime, she enjoyed crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles and 
riding her bike. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. 
 
She is survived by her daughter, Lynda (Earl) Scott of Ashtabula; two sons, Jon 
(Kay Ann) Brabender of Jefferson, and Arnold W. “Skip” (Marcey) Brabender of 
Huntington Beach, CA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Mark, Christine, 
Eric and Dena Brabender, Brian and Kevin Burke, Cathlene Nitowski and Kirsten 
Millet; and six great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Anthony Jon Nitowski, Jessica 
and Zachary Brabender, and Jana and Kylie Burke. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbur Weber, in 2002; a 
brother, William Rankinen; four sisters, Laina Sharp, Pearl Nook, Lillian 
Lindgren and Alice Dickson; and a granddaughter, Brenda Brabender.

ERIE, PA — Anna D. Green, age 79, of Eureka Road, Ashtabula, died Wednesday, 
June 9, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital, Erie, PA. 
 
She was born June 17, 1924, the daughter of Nick and Lucy (Longobucco) Ray, and 
had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident. 
 
A graduate of Edgewood High School, she worked as a title clerk for Earl Rowe 
Chrysler and Callender Chevrolet. 
 
A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, she served during World War II. 
 
She enjoyed baking, knitting and camping, and loved to share the things she 
made, with everyone. 
 
Her survivors include her husband, Earnest Green, whom she married May 25, 1968; 
one son, Anthony “T.J.” Palmerezzi Jr. of Ashtabula; one sister, Palma Benedict 
of Ashtabula; and her nephew and niece, Gary “Mousey” Benedict and LouAnn 
Chambers, both of Ashtabula. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents. 
 
A Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Greenlawn Memory 
Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Reverend Fr. Joseph Ruggieri, Pastor of Our Lady of 
Mount Carmel Church, will preside. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory 
Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville.

EVIE LOU WHELPLEY 
 
KINGSVILLE — Evie Lou Whelpley, age 86, died early Wednesday morning, 
June 9, 2004, in the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. 
 
She was born in Lexington, MS, on July 3, 1917, the daughter of Jake and Cora 
(Truitt) Frazier. 
 
She worked as a bookkeeper all of her life. She was the Payroll Clerk and Office 
Manager of Carlisle’s Department Store until her retirement in 1976. 
 
She remained very active after her retirement, serving as a representative on 
the District 11 Board of Ashtabula; the Human Services Advisory Board; the 
Ashtabula Council on Aging; was the president of the AARP in Ashtabula, in 1988, 
and was also the Assistant State and District Director of the Ohio AARP. 
 
She was an active member of the Prospect Presbyterian Church. 
 
She is survived by several nieces and nephews around the country, but locally by 
her nieces Cheryl Stills of Kingsville, who was also her local care 
giver, Ingrid Whitaker and Norma Eble; and her nephews, Dan and Paul Cochran, 
and also her nephew, David Frazier and his wife, Nancy, of Martinez, GA. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Millard “Mike,” on 
February 4, 1989. 
 
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the 
ROSS-BILLMAN FUNERAL HOME, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, OH, with the Reverend

CONNEAUT — Nickolas A. Narducci, age 76, of 15th Street, Conneaut, 
OH, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the Villa at the Lake. 
 
Born in Conneaut, OH on November 22, 1926, the son of the late Lebro and 
Mary (Phil) Narducci, he had resided her his entire life. 
 
Mr. Narducci was employed by the Nickel Plate Railroad for several years and 
retired from the Ashtabula Bow Socket as a press operator. 
 
He was a member of the Lakeview United Methodist Church and was a Veteran of 
World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. 
 
In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling and fishing.  
 
Survivors include his wife, Thelma (Hewitt), to whom he had been married to for 
the last 53 years; a daughter, Joyce Schreiber, and a son, Gary Wood, both of 
Conneaut; three grandchildren, Pan Nyman of Conneaut, Brenda Jaworski 
of Erie, PA and Shelly Runyeon of Arlington, TX; five step-grandchildren; and a 
brother, Lebro Narducci of Cranesville, PA. 
 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters; and one brother.

CONNEAUT — Anne E. (Rankinen) Weber, age 85, of Austinburg Road, 
Ashtabula, OH, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Ashtabula County Medical Center, 
Ashtabula, OH. 
 
She was born August 29, 1918, in Conneaut, OH, a daughter of the late 
Hjalmer and Hilma (Orrenmaa) Rankinen. She spent most of her life in Conneaut 
and, for the past three years, had made her home with her daughter and 
son-in-law, Lynda (Burke) and Earl Scott, in Ashtabula. 
 
She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Royal Neighbors of 
America. 
 
During her lifetime, she enjoyed crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles and 
riding her bike. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. 
 
She is survived by her daughter, Lynda (Earl) Scott of Ashtabula; and two sons, 
Jon (Kay Ann) Brabender of Jefferson and Arnold W. “Skip” (Marcey) Brabender of 
Huntington Beach, CA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Mark, Christine, 
Eric and Dena Brabender, Brian and Kevin Burke, Cathlene Nitowski and Kirsten 
Millet; and six great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Anthony Jon Nitowski, Jessica 
and Zachary Brabender, and Jana and Kylie Burke. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbur Weber, in 2002; a 
brother, William Rankinen; four sisters, Laina Sharp, Pearl Nook, Lillian 
Lindgren and Alice Dickson; and a granddaughter, Brenda Brabender. 
 
Funeral Services will be on Friday, June 11, 2004, at 12 p.m. (noon) at the 
MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, 
OH, with Reverend Meredith Coleman, pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist

CONNEAUT — Nickolas A. Narducci, age 76, of 15th Street, Conneaut, 
OH, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the Villa at the Lake. 
 
Born in Conneaut, OH on November 22, 1926, the son of the late Lebro and 
Mary (Phil) Narducci, he had resided her his entire life. 
 
Mr. Narducci was employed by the Nickel Plate Railroad for several years and 
retired from the Ashtabula Bow Socket as a press operator. 
 
He was a member of the Lakeview United Methodist Church and was a Veteran of 
World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. 
 
In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling and fishing.  
 
Survivors include his wife, Thelma (Hewitt), to whom he had been married to for 
the last 53 years; a daughter, Joyce Schreiber, and a son, Gary Wood, both of 
Conneaut; three grandchildren, Pam Nyman of Conneaut, Brenda Jaworski 
of Erie, PA and Shelly Runyeon of Arlington, TX; five great-grandchildren, Scott 
and Haylee Nyman, Cory and Casey Runyeon, and Jamie Jaworski; five 
step-grandchildren; and a brother, Lebro Narducci of Cranesville, PA. 
 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters; and one brother.

RAYMOND A. BOVEE, JR. 
 
CONNEAUT — Raymond A. Bovee, Jr., age 72, of Monroe Township, OH, 
died Friday, June 11, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital, Conneaut, OH. 
 
He was born February 23, 1932 in Girard, PA, a son of Raymond A. and Edna 
(Olmstead) Bovee. 
 
Mr. Bovee was president of his graduating class at Rice Union High School in 
Girard, PA. He spent his early years in Girard and was a Monroe Township 
resident for the past 49 years.  
 
A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Korea. Mr. Bovee was stationed on the 
38th Parallel when the conflict ended. He was awarded many medals including the 
United Nations Medal. 
 
Retiring in 1987, he was employed as an inspector at Rockwell in Ashtabula, OH. 
He was a staunch union man and was a member of U.A.W. Local #274, where he 
served as an officer for many years. 
 
He coached Little League in Monroe Township and North Kingsville, and served as 
scoutmaster for the Boy Scout troops at State Line United Methodist Church. Mr. 
Bovee also served as vice president of the Conneaut Board of Education. 
 
Mr. Bovee enjoyed all sports and was an avid Ohio State and Cleveland Browns 
fan. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling, golfing, camping, building model 
airplanes and cars, and helping his grandsons work on their cars. He was 
enthusiastic in all that he did. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Doris (English) Bovee, whom he married November 1, 
1952; three daughters, Debra (Edward) Ball of Ashtabula, OH, Sandra (Mike) 
Crawford of Conneaut, OH and Theresa Bovee of Coventry, CT; two sons, 
Mathew R. (Martha Sue) Bovee of Monroe Township, OH and Daniel J. 
(Kathleen) Bovee of Conneaut, OH; four sister, Evelyn (Sam) Baker of West 
Springfield, PA, Joanne (Fred) Regal and Beverly (James) Ulbrich, both of Erie, 
PA and Mary Jane (Harry) Hill of Wilmington, DE; his brother, Fred (Pauline) 
Bovee of Lewes, DE; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Jimmie Bovee.

CONNEAUT – Robert Hanzelka, 64, of Old Lake Road, East Springfield, PA 
died Monday, June 14, 2004 at UHHS – Brown Memorial Hospital.  
 
He was born July 18, 1939 in Erie, PA the son of Carl S. and Margaret (Warhola) 
Hanzelka and had been an East Springfield resident for the past four years. He 
had either wintered or lived in the Tampa, Florida area for many years.  
 
A graduate of Rice Avenue Union High School in Girard, PA, he worked for JC 
Penney in Florida and previously worked construction as well.  
 
A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed sports, collecting old motorcycles, and archery.
 
 
His survivors include his mother, Margaret Hanzelka of Jefferson; three 
brothers, Carl J. of Ashtabula, Edward C. of East Springfield, PA, and Clarence 
E. Hanzelka of Girard, PA; and several nieces and nephews.  
 
He was preceded in death by his father.  
 
A service will be held 11 AM on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at the Edgewood 
Alliance Church, 3137 East Center Street, N, Kingsville. Rev. Gordon 
Emerson, Lay Pastor of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Monday morning, June 14, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital in Erie, PA, 
following a lengthy illness. 
 
She was born September 3, 1920 in Springfield Township, PA, she was a daughter 
of Jacamo and Maria (Rinella) Barrante. A graduate of Rice Avenue Union High 
School in Girard, PA, she was a lifelong area resident. 
 
She held many jobs over the years including waitressing at various area 
restaurants, and was employed at Premix, Inc. and General Electric Base Plant. 
She retired after 15 years as dispatcher for the Conneaut Police 
Department. 
 
Mrs. Humalainen was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, the Cara Mia Club, 
the Moose Auxiliary, the Eagles Auxiliary, and was past president of the 
American Legion Auxiliary. 
 
In her younger years, she played softball, volleyball, and basketball. She 
enjoyed all kinds of dancing, crafts, and collecting Hummels. 
 
Survivors include her husband, Robert A. “Ralph” Humalainen, whom she married 
June 30, 1945; a daughter, Barbara J. (John) Coe of Conneaut, OH; a son, 
Eric L. (Mary) Humalainen of Conneaut, OH; her sister, Anne (Gene) 
Filiger of Girard, PA; six grandchildren, Debbie Coe, Tracie Getchell, Jason 
Coe, Joshua Humalainen, Crystal Drummer, and Michael Crossman; and four 
great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Coe, Darek Getchell, and Courtney and Makayla Coe.

On August 22, 1964, she married John Camplese. In 1966, she came to the U.S. to 
make her home.

CONNEAUT — Theresa A. Kobernik, age 84, of Lake Erie Street, Conneaut, 
OH, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center. 
 
Born in Youngstown, OH, August 10, 1919, the daughter of the late Nicholas and 
Mary Miladore, she had resided in Conneaut since 1949. 
 
She was employed by Youngstown Steel Door for several years. 
 
Mrs. Kobernik enjoyed being with her family, was an avid Indians fan, and 
enjoyed watching “Days of Our Lives”, cooking and knitting. 
 
She was a devoted, loving and faithful wife for 55 years to Oscar J. Sr.; and a 
special mother to Debbie and husband, Joe Abraham, of Old Brooklyn, OH and Oscar 
J. (Butch) Jr. and wife, Charlotte, of Conneaut, OH. She is also survived 
by four grandchildren, Colleen and Kelly Kobernik and Jeremy and Chad Abraham; 
and one great-grandson, Kyle Kobernik. Several nieces and nephews also survive. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters. 
 
It was the request of the deceased that she be cremated and no calling hours or 
services be held. 
 
The family suggests that memorials be made in her name to Hospice of Western

CONNEAUT — Conneaut industrialist, Edward J. Malek, age 95, died 
Thursday evening, June 17, 2004, at The Villa At The Lake, Conneaut, OH. 
 
He was born August 26, 1908 in Cleveland, OH, and was the son of Anthony and Eva 
(Kalucka) Malek. 
 
Mr. Malek was an entrepreneur who founded many businesses including Rubber 
Products, Inc., Conneaut Rubber & Plastics, Inc., Conneaut 
Buildings, Inc., Allied Resins, Inc., Allied Resinous, Inc., and Allied, Inc. 
 
He was a philanthropist who supported his community in many ways including the 
Malek Wing and Dorothy Malek Annex at Brown Memorial Hospital. He donated land 
to the City of Conneaut for Malek Park, a tractor to the city, land to 
the Conneaut Area Schools, and built the clubhouse at Conneaut 
Shores Golf Course. 
 
In 1959, Mr. Malek was named “Mr. Community” by the Conneaut Chamber of 
Commerce, and in 1987 was awarded a key to the City by Mayor Edward Griswold. 
 
He was a member of Amboy United Methodist Church, B.P.O.E. Elks #256, and was a 
lifetime member of Conneaut Rotary Club. 
 
He enjoyed spending time on his tractor mowing and farming, golfing, and 
wintering in Englewood, FL, where he also loved to fish. 
 
Survivors include his sister, Helen Kuzmick of Ashtabula, OH; his 
brother-in-law, N. Keith Anderson of Conneaut, OH; nephews, Gary Anderson 
and Gerry Anderson, both of Conneaut, OH, Chuck Anderson of New York and 
Steven Hoplight of Ashtabula, OH; and nieces, Linda Streva of Greensboro, NC, 
Diane Anderson of Conneaut, OH and Brenda Pahmayer of Seven Hills, OH. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy F. Malek in 2002; and

Mr. Pizzi was a Veteran of the United States Navy. On October 4, 1947, he 
married Eloise Antonelli in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. 
 
The Superintendent of Carriage Hill Apartments in Ashtabula, he also retired 
from Elkem Metals in 1982. In 1982, he and his wife moved to Phoenix, AZ, where 
he worked for U-Haul and returned to Ashtabula in 2003. 
 
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus; VFW; and a former member of Sons of 
Italy of America. He was an 8-gallon donor to the American Red Cross. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Eloise Pizzi of Ashtabula; son, Nicholas G. Pizzi 
and his wife, Barbara, of Twinsburg, OH; grandson, Sean Thornton of Elyria; 
brother, William J. Pizzi of Ashtabula; and sister, Bertha Colucci of Ashtabula.

Kostalek, she had resided most of her life in Conneaut. 
 
She was employed by the former Bonnie Dee Sewing Factory, in Ashtabula, for 
several years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, and in her leisure time, 
she enjoyed making rag rugs, sewing and raising flowers. 
 
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Krajeski of North Kingsville, 
and a grandson, Robert Krajeski of North Kingsville. Besides her 
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; her two sisters, Mae

CONNEAUT — James A. Gottschalk, 52, of East Main Road, Conneaut, 
died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Keefus Road, Conneaut. 
 
Born in Los Angeles, Ca., January 17, 1951, the son of the late Charles E. and 
Margaret (Brett) Gottschalk, he had resided in Conneaut for the past 13 years. 
 
Prior to that, he had made his home in Euclid. 
 
He was employed for several years by the Cleveland Clinic and Progressive 
Insurance Co., as a technical support manager. He had received his Ph.D. in 
Computer Science and Physics. He was treasurer of the Conneaut Fish and 
Game Club and spent most of his time working with computers. 
 
He is survived by his wife, Angela, to whom he had been married the past 20 
years; a daughter, Marissa Gottschalk, and a son, James V. Gottschalk, both of
Conneaut; two grandchildren, Savannah and Dylan Gottschalk; and a 
brother, Robert Russell of Broadview Heights. 
 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Pokorny. 
 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 26, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the 
THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. 
Raymond Thomas, pastor of St. Mary’s Church and St. Frances Cabrini Church, 
officiating. 
 
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens. Friends may call at

She is survived by her husband, Robert Furmage; sons, Eli Roath of Ashtabula, 
Charles Furmage of Conneaut and Kenneth Furmage of West Springfield, PA; 
daughters, Helen Jacobs of Valley Springs, CA, Wilma Zeppettella and Susan 
Johnson, both of Conneaut, Agnes Pickett of Ashtabula and Carol Griffis 
of Altamonte Springs, FL; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. 
 
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dora Schatz; former husband, Giles 
Roath; a infant son; her parents; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 
 
A Memorial Service will be held 7 p.m. on Monday, June 28, 2004, at the

WEST SPRINGFIELD, PA — Harley G. Whitney, age 82, of West Springfield, PA, died 
Wednesday afternoon, June 23, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in 
Conneaut, OH, of a probable coronary. 
 
He was born May 5, 1922 in West Springfield, PA, and was a son of Ernest C. and 
Louise (Gould) Whitney. A 1940 graduate of West Springfield High School, he was 
a lifelong resident being the fourth generation to run the family farm, Sand 
Ridge Farms. 
 
Mr. Whitney was a member of West Springfield United Methodist Church and was a 
volunteer fireman with the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department. 
 
He and his wife, Esther, loved square dancing and were members of the “Stars N 
Thars” square dance club. 
 
He was also an avid bicyclist and enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Esther (Wright) Whitney, whom he married May 2, 
1945; his daughter, Gail (Paul) Whitney-Reszkowski of Millcreek, PA; two sons, 
Ray H. (Rebecca) Whitney of Bloomingburg, OH and Glen A. (Roxane) Whitney of 
West Springfield, PA; four sisters, Mabel (Joe) Konopa of West Springfield, 
Luella (Robert) Murch of Columbus, NC, Jane (James) Trolier of Wayne, PA and 
Margaret (Roy) Potts of Moon Township, PA; a brother, Charles (Nancy) Whitney of 
Vassar, MI; six grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William, Ernest and 
Loren Whitney; and a sister, Elizabeth Dorchester.

ANNA E. ONION 
   
CONNEAUT — Anna Elizabeth (Brown) Onion, age 80, died Thursday, June 24, 
2004, in Ashtabula County Medical Center after a 19-month struggle with cancer. 
 
Born May 26, 1924 in Painesville, OH, she was the daughter of the late Ernest 
and Rose (Palacek) Brown. She married George A. Onion, Sr. on March 14, 1953 in 
Painesville, where they lived for several years before moving to Ashtabula 
County. 
 
Mrs. Onion was a member of the First Baptist Church, and also attended Good 
Shepherd Lutheran Church of Conneaut. She was a former member of the 
Faith Lutheran Church of Ashtabula. 
 
She was very involved in the Senior Programs in both Ashtabula and Conneaut, 
and was the first person to receive the “Conneaut Senior Citizen of the 
Month” award in February of 2004. 
 
She loved her family, enjoyed gardening and early morning walks, and being 
around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 
 
Mrs. Onion is survived by her son, George A. Onion, Jr. of Conneaut; 
daughters, Rose McKiethan, Dixie Onion and Dinah Grimes, all of Conneaut 
and Ruth Powell of Kingsville; a sister, Florence May (Brown) Walker of 
Painesville; grandchildren, Rochelle Biemsederfer, Charles D. Grimes, Sarah 
Burress, Star Grimes, Joshua Powell, Jeremy S. Grimes and Nathan A. Powell; and 
great-grandchildren, Alexis, Candace and Shelby Elizabeth Kirby. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George A. Onion, Sr.; and 
several brothers and sisters. 
 
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at the

FRANCES C. WALBRIDGE 
 
EAST SPRINGFIELD, PA – Frances C. Walbridge, 84, of East Springfield, Pa., died 
Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Sarah Reed Retirement Center in Erie, Pa., 
following a brief illness. 
 
She was born June 24, 1920 in Cleveland, and was the daughter of Guy T. and 
Winifred E. (Tripp) Janes. 
 
A lifelong Springfield area resident, Mrs. Walbridge was a graduate of West 
Springfield High School and attended Grace Episcopal Church in her early years 
and more recently attended West Springfield United Methodist Church. 
 
At one time she worked at the Boston Store in Erie, and the Conneaut 
Grain and Feed Store and W. T. Grant Co. in Conneaut. She was a member of 
the Friendly Neighbors and enjoyed art, painting, crocheting, raising house 
plants and flowers, farming and raising horses. 
 
Survivors include her husband Richard H. Walbridge Sr., whom she married Aug. 
13, 1943; her daughter Linda (Frank) Walbridge Melvin of Blairsville, Ga.; and 
her granddaughter Rebecca Sue Hanas of Blairsville, Ga. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Malcolm G. Janes, and her 
son, Richard H.. Walbridge, Jr. 
 
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, at East 
Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield, Pa. 
 
There will be no visitation or funeral service.

ANTHONY J. NUNES 
   
CONNEAUT – Anthony J. Nunes, age 66 of Conneaut died Friday, June 
25, 2004 at UHHS Brown Memorial. 
 
Mr. Nunes was born February 21, 1938 in Erie, PA, the son of Anthony J. and Jane 
(Wawszczyk) Nunes. 
 
He was a 1955 graduate of Tech Memorial. He then went on to serve his country as 
a U.S. Marine for two years until he was honorably discharged. He then attended 
the University of Slippery Rock, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 
Education. 
 
He was also the star quarterback at Slippery Rock, where he still holds many of 
the school's passing records and led his team to a NCAA Division II title. 
Tony's first teaching and coaching job was at Uniontown, PA. Tony then went to 
Jamestown, New York where he also taught and coached. 
 
While at Jamestown he also won a league championship. In 1976, Tony came to 
teach at the Conneaut School system and served as the head football coach. His 
team won the 1978-79 N.E.C. championship. In 1981, he went to work for high 
school in Girard, PA, until his retirement in 2003. 
 
Tony loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren. He loved to coach 
football, and playing golf was a true passion of his. He enjoyed his Tuesday 
Traveling Golf League and all the guys in it. 
 
Tony was preceded in death by his father, Anthony J. Nunes in 1980. 
 
He is survived by his mother, Jane (Wawszczyk) Nunes of Erie, PA; his wife, 
Irene M. (Lafferty) Nunes, whom he married July 3, 1965; five children, a son, 
Anthony J. & Carrie of Richmond, VA; daughters, Natalie & Todd Conway of 
Williamsburg, VA., Nancy & David Lassiter of Williamsburg, VA., Nikki & Shane 
Chaffin of Williamsburg, VA., and Noelle Nunes of Conneaut; a brother 
James Nunes of Erie, Pa., 10 grandchildren Abby, Amy, Michael, Peter, Kayliegh, 
Kaitlyn, Braelyn, Shane, Haley and Anthony J. 
 
Calling hours will be held Monday, June 28, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the 
RAISIAN FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut. Funeral services will be
