Margaret R. Mason 
 
MELBOURNE, FL — Margaret R. Mason, age 79, of Northern Oak Street, Melbourne, 
FL, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at her home in Florida. 
 
She was born July 26, 1925, in Ashtabula, OH, the daughter of Floyd and Julia 
(Collier) Thorpe, and has lived in Florida since the mid-1980s. She was a 
graduate of Edgewood High School and married Leonard Mason on June 21, 1946. 
 
She had worked for Ashtabula Rubber, also as a hotel clerk and waitress, and 
various other jobs in the Ashtabula area. 
 
Mrs. Mason was an avid bowler and enjoyed cooking for her family. She also 
enjoyed gardening and her flowers, and she loved going to Las Vegas. 
 
Surviving her is her husband, Leonard; four sons, Jerry Mason of Mentor, OH, 
Geary Mason of Ashtabula, Roy Mason of Pierpont, OH, and Todd Mason of Palm Bay, 
FL; two sisters, Judy Hedrick of Madison, OH, and Connie McCroskey of 
Kingsville, OH; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Arthur Thorpe; and a 
granddaughter, Jody Hedrick. 
 
Funeral Service is Monday, October 4, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the ROSS-BILLMAN 
FUNERAL HOME, 526 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Reverend Stephen Long, of 
the First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, officiating. Burial will be in 
Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville, OH.

CONNEAUT — Katherine A. Ille, 82, of Conneaut, died Thursday, 
September 30, 2004 at Inn Conneaut Health Center. 
 
She was born February 16, 1922 in Conneaut, the daughter of Joseph and 
Mary (Bianco) Williams. 
 
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harold D. 
Hoover; and five brothers, John, Jim, Tony, Nick and Charles Williams. 
 
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Ille of Conneaut; two sons, 
Harold Hoover of Ada, Michigan and Robert L. Ille, Jr. of Conneaut; two 
grandchildren, Robbie Hoover of Brentwood, California and Scott R. J. Ille of 
Conneaut; a brother, Paul Williams of Conneaut; two sisters, Lucy 
Hultgren of Erie and Sue Vandette of Dunkirk, New York. 
 
At the request of the deceased, no calling hours will be observed. It was 
Katherine’s wish to donate her body to Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

Joseph F. Wenger 
   
PIERPONT — Joseph F. (Hofka) Wenger, 77, died Saturday, October 2, 2004, at 
Mahoning Valley Hospital-Trumbull Branch. 
 
Born Feb. 9, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was a lifelong Pierpont resident. 
 
Mr. Wenger was a 1945 graduate of Pierpont High School. From a very early age, 
Mr. Wenger was raised by Stanley and Mary Hofka, where he ran the family dairy 
farm for most of his life. Along with dairy farming, he raised pigs, beef cattle 
and grain-farmed. He was a member of the Cattle Association and the Ashtabula 
Farm Bureau. Mr. Wenger enjoyed hunting and bowling. 
 
He is preceded in death by his mother Martha (Starcheski) Wenger; his parents, 
Stanley and Mary Hofka; and a sister, Eleanor Trout. 
 
Survivors include a sister, Virginia Dinger of Akron; two nephews, Jerry Trout 
and Ronald Dinger; three nieces, Kathleen Trout, Marcene Griffin and Ellen 
Milhoan; and two cousins with whom he was raised, Stanley and William Hofka. 
 
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at 1 p.m. at 
BAUMGARDNER FUNERAL HOME, 134 Prospect St., Andover, with Pastor Brenda Loucks 
officiating. 
 
Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Pierpont.

 Thomas C. Campbell 
   
CONNEAUT — Thomas C. Campbell, age 70, of Conneaut, OH, died Saturday, October 
2, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. 
 
Mr. Campbell was born July 19, 1934, in Albion, PA, the son of Paul C. and Elsie 
L. (Olin) Campbell. Tom was a graduate of Conneaut High School and also served 
in the United States Air Force, until he was honorably discharged. 
 
He later went to work for the Norfolk and Western Railroad as a dispatcher, 
working in Conneaut and Fairport Harbor, until 1984. He also worked for Ohio 
State Life Insurance Co. as a licensed agent.  
 
Tom enjoyed bowling, fishing, and loved to play cards with his friends at the 
Moose Club. 
 
He was a member of the Masonic Temple Evergreen Lodge, and also a former member 
of the Conneaut Moose and Eagles Club.  
 
Tom enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and especially his 
grandchildren. 
 
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Laura A. Campbell, in 
September of 2000. 
 
He is survived by four daughters, Tomasina and (Mark) Tafelski of Erie, PA, 
Jennifer and (Richard) Grant of Okinawa, Japan, Apryle and (Bruce) Davis of 
Springboro, PA, and Valerie and (Tom) Freeman of Fairview, PA; two sisters, 
Norma M. and (Jack) Carr of Pierpont, and Carole and (Anthony) Zappitelli of 
Conneaut; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 
 
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, October 7, 2004, at the RAISIAN 
FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut, with Pastors Cheryl and Howard Shouse, of the Erie Christian Fellowship Church, Fairview, PA, officiating. 
Burial will follow at East Springfield Cemetery.

Howard P. Wheeler 
   
CONNEAUT — Howard P. Wheeler, 91, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Sunday afternoon, 
October 3, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville, Ohio. He 
was born March 25, 1913, in Conneaut, Ohio, and was a son of William and Stella 
(Payne) Wheeler. 
 
A lifelong area resident, except for nine years spend in Brooksville, FL, Mr. 
Wheeler attended Defiance College and was employed as a boiler operator at Union 
Carbide. He was instrumental in starting both the Ashtabula and Conneaut 
congregations of the Church of Christ. He served as elder and Sunday school 
teacher in Conneaut. He was an avid card player and also enjoyed playing 
dominoes. His family held weekly Thursday night Hearts tournaments, keeping 
computerized records of scores and winners over the years, and also held family 
Canasta tournaments. He also enjoyed farming and gardening, especially raising 
strawberries. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Esther (Molzon) Wheeler, whom he married February 5, 
1940; his daughter, Loretta Williams of Morrilton, AR; four sons, Russell H. 
Wheeler of Geneva, OH, Donald A. of Austinburg, OH, Larry L. of North 
Kingsville, OH, and Ronald A., also of North Kingsville; 10 grandchildren; and 2 
great-grandchildren. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Helen Cook, Mabelle 
Cleveland, Dora Robinson, and Dorothy Pratt; and a brother, Corwin Wheeler. 
 
Funeral services will be at noon Friday, October 8, 2004, at the Conneaut Church 
of Christ, 448 West Main Rd., with Tim Kraus officiating, assisted by Terry Silverd of the Cortland, Ohio, Church of Christ. 
 
Friends may call at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty 
St., Conneaut, OH, on Thursday from 6 to 8 PM, and on Friday at the church, 
beginning at 11:00 AM.

KINGSVILLE — Dolores “Do Do” J. Kovacic, 76, of Monroe Center Rd. died Tuesday, 
October 5, 2004 at Ashtabula County Nursing Home. Born December 1, 1927 in 
Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Joe and Stella Mosinski. 
 
She attended St. Andrew Catholic Church. Dolores was a member of the Altar 
Rosary Society at the church. She enjoyed making afghans, cooking, and her 
grandchildren. 
 
Survivors include her husband, Harold of Monroe, whom she married August 9, 
1958; four daughters, Susan (Larry) Deak of Ashtabula, Patti (Tom) McClain of 
Cuyahoga Falls, Mary Jane (Nate) Boyd of Geneva and Virginia (Greg) Kendro of 
Chicago; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Larry 
Mosinski. 
 
Mrs. Kovacic was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Jane Stickney, Rita 
English, Elaine Rock; a brother, Joe Mosinski; and her parents. 
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 8, 2004 at 11:00 AM at St.

 Harry Stichick 
 
CONNEAUT — Harry Stichick, age 87, of Conneaut, died Monday, October 4, 
2004, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center in Conneaut. 
 
Mr. Stichick was born May 16, 1917, in Rome, NY. He attended Lowe Hill School 
and then went to work in the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. Harry also 
served in the United States Army for one year. Following his Honorable 
Discharge, he later became employed as a tool setter with the Conneaut 
General Electric Base Plant for 36 years, until his retirement in 1979.  
 
Harry was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Crossingville, PA; 
the Conneaut Moose Lodge #472, the Girard American Legion for 56 years, a 
life member and past Commander (1992) of Eagles #494, and the Legion Century 
Club #151. 
 
Harry enjoyed socializing with all his friends, and playing poker was a favorite 
pastime of his. 
 
Mr. Stichick was preceded in death by his mother, Anna (Huk) Stichick, and 
stepfather, Anthony Selstow; his wife, Anna (Gruzosky) Stichick; and two 
brothers, Lin Stichick and Paul Stichick. 
 
He is survived by four sons, Harry Donald Stichick of Springfield, PA, Michael 
E. Stichick of Palmer, AK, Paul Stichick of California, and Nicholas Martin 
Stichick of Washington; a brother, Michael (Mickey) Stichick of Denbo, PA; three 
grandchildren, Theresa Betancourt, Matthew Stichick, and Tina Stichick; and two 
great-grandchildren, D.A. Stichick and Anna Betancourt. 
 
Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Sts. Peter and

HARPERSFIELD – Frank Edward Drugovich, 74, a Harpersfield Township resident for 
53 years, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 5, 2004, at UHHS Memorial Hospital of 
Geneva. 
 
Born Oct. 26, 1929, in Cleveland, he married Mary (Kerin) on May 9, 1953, in 
Cleveland. 
 
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict; member of the VFW and 
American Legion in Geneva; a 53-year member of the National Grape Co-op; a 
member of Assumption Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Harpersfield 
Ruritan Club. He served as a volunteer with the Harpersfield Fire Department. 
Mr. Drugovich had a deep devotion to his community and family and particularly 
enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. 
 
He owned and operated the family grape farm in Harpersfield Township, where he 
also served as a past Zoning Administrator. 
 
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Drugovich of Harpersfield; two 
daughters, Linda (Jacob) Chicatelli of Conneaut, and Margaret Drugovich 
(Elizabeth Steele) of Delaware, OH; a son, Michael (Collette) Drugovich of 
Harpersfield; eight grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley and Billy Chicatelli, Lindsey, 
Martina and Adam Drugovich, and Elizabeth and Billy Kelly; and a sister, Mildred 
Hoegler of Euclid. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise (Cesen) and Frank Drugovich.

Betty J. (Shauberger) Brunell, and has been a lifetime area resident. 
 
He attended Happy Hearts School and has been employed by Ashcraft Industries in 
the Greenhouse. 
 
He is a member of Kingsville Presbyterian Church and, in his younger years, was 
a Boy Scout. 
 
Surviving him is his brother, Timothy Brunell of Kingsville; a sister, Judy M. 
Cusano of Bradenton, FL; and Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Roger Brunell.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, PA — Mabel R. Konopa, 80, of Blood Rd., West Springfield, PA, 
died Thursday evening, October 7, 2004 at University Hospital in Cleveland, OH. 
She was born February 29, 1924, in West Springfield, PA, and was a daughter of 
Ernest C. and Louise (Gould) Whitney. 
 
Mrs. Konopa was a registered nurse and graduated with honors from the University 
of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She did some special duty and industrial 
nursing and was a school nurse for three years. She was a member of St. Mary 
Catholic Church in Conneaut, OH, Catholic Daughters of America, was a charter 
member of Eta Chapter, Pittsburgh, PA Honorary Society; a charter member of Our 
Lady of the Lake, Edinboro, PA; and was past president of the Friendly Neighbors 
Club. She enjoyed music, gardening, traveling, and oil painting. 
 
Survivors include her husband Joseph Konopa whom she married December 24, 1948; 
two daughters, Julia Burke of Milliken, Colorado, and Janice DeLong of Conway, 
Arkansas; and seven sons: Joseph Konopa III of Singapore, China, John Konopa of 
West Springfield, PA, James of Geneva, OH, Jerome of Jefferson, OH, Jeffrey of 
West Springfield, PA, Justin of Conneaut, OH, and Jason of Ashtabula, OH; three 
sisters, Luella Murch of Columbus, NC, Jane Troiler of Wayne, PA, and Margaret 
Potts of Monroe Twp, OH; a brother Charles Whitney; and 13 grandchildren.

CONNEAUT — Betty L. Earle, 79, of Conneaut, OH died Thursday evening, October 7, 
2004 at Inn-Conneaut Health Center. She was born February 17, 1925, in 
Barnesboro, PA. 
 
Mrs. Earle and her husband ran a handicapped school for the state of New York 
for several years before retiring. She lived in North Kingsville, OH for 31 
years and in Conneaut for 14 years. She was a former member of St. Gregory’s 
Church, and enjoyed growing vegetables and spending time with her son. 
 
Survivors include her son Henry C. Earle III of Akron, OH; her sister Phyllis 
Overdorf of Indiana, PA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Henry C. Earle II in 1971; 
two sisters, Annie Krause and LeVia Krause; and two brothers Paul Krause and 
David Krause, Jr.

Richard A. Talso 
   
ASHTABULA – Richard A. Talso, 70, of East 39th Street, Ashtabula died Monday, 
Oct. 11, 2004 in Ashtabula County Medical Center. 
 
Born in Erie, Pennsylvania on Feb. 3, 1934, the son of the late Walter and Irene 
(Konlo) Talso. He had resided in the Conneaut and Kingsville area for 39 
years. For the past six years he had lived in Ashtabula. 
 
Mr. Talso was employed for several years with the Erie Forge and Steel Company 
and retired due to a disability. He was also employed as a machinist for Emco 
Wheaton Company. He was a member of the Kingsville Presbyterian Church where he 
served as an Elder. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, going to flea 
markets and especially being with his grandchildren. 
 
His is survived by his wife Judy (Blenman) to whom he had been married for the 
past 39 years; a daughter Rebecca Taylor of Ashtabula; a son Timothy Talso of 
Ashtabula; six grandchildren and three sisters, Marie Gresh and Ruth Stearns 
both of Girard, Pa., and Winifred Brinkley of Brookfield, Pa. 
 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Walters 
and Yvonne Payne and a brother Emory Talso. 
 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL 
HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut. 
 
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

SOUTHGATE, MICHIGAN – Paul Raymond Dobbins, Sr., 70 of Southgate, Michigan died 
on Monday, Oct. 11, 2004. 
 
Mr. Dobbins was a 1952 graduate of Conneaut High School and attended John 
Carroll University. He was the dearest son of the late Ralph and Margaret 
Dobbins. 
 
He was the loving father of Diane (Anthony) Balint, Paul Jr. (Jennifer), 
Catherine (Steve) Cordon, Kelly (Scott) Offman and the late Mary Dobbins; the 
dear grandfather of eleven; dear brother of Denise Thompson, Margaret Dobbins 
and Colleen Grabski and the late Frank, Joe and Phil Dobbins. 
 
Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 2 to 9 p.m., Scripture Service at 7

home after a lengthy illness. Born November 12, 1949, she was the daughter of

moving to Cleveland. Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Allan; three

KINGSVILLE — Virginia I. Nagle, age 75, of Dibble Road, Kingsville, OH, 
died Thursday, October 14, 2004, in the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. 
 
Born in Ashtabula County on October 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Victor 
and Irene (Johnston) Grand, she had resided in the Kingsville area her entire 
life. 
 
Mrs. Nagle was a homemaker and graduated from the former Kingsville High School.
 
 
She was a member of the Sheffield Grange and Orion Chapter Order of Eastern Star 
of Kingsville. 
 
She is survived by a sister, Nancy Stewart of Sheffield Township; and six nieces 
nephews. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George; and a 
sister, Marie Sharp. 
 
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2004, at the

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – Former Conneaut resident, Harold W. Armstrong, 85, died 
unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 at Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville, 
Florida. 
 
He was born Feb. 6, 1919, in Conneaut, a son of Walter and Hildred 
(Hicks) Armstrong, and had lived in Jacksonville for the past four years with 
his daughter Ginny. 
 
He lived in Conneaut for 80 years where he owned and operated Armstrong’s 
Bike Shop for 30 years. He was also employed for many years by Fortune & Byers 
Hardware Store, Herrick & Irving, Marcy’s Applicator Services and had served 
with the Merchant Marines during World War II. A member of First United 
Methodist Church, he was also a dedicated member, leader and former officer of 
many Masonic orders including Evergreen Lodge #222 F & AM, Rose Chapter, #22 
O.E.S., Conneaut Chapter #76 Royal Arch Masons, Conneaut Council 
#40 Royal & Select Masters, Cache Commandry #27 and Knight York Cross of Honor. 
He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and entertaining his friends and family 
by playing guitar and harmonica. He was a devoted father and husband who will be 
missed by all who knew him. 
 
Survivors include his daughter Virginia Swartz of Jacksonville, Florida; two 
sons, Gerald Armstrong of Conneaut and William Swartz of Valparaiso, 
Indiana; two sisters, Viola Erdman of Wellsburg, West Virginia and Thelma Szalai 
of Conneaut; a brother Richard Armstrong of West Springfield, 
Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Monica Distelrath, Katherine Swartz, Elizabeth 
Neff and Abigail Swartz; and two great grandchildren Jordon Wiser and Gabriella 
Distelrath. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 41 years E. Rosemary (Lowler) 
Armstrong; two brothers, George Edmond Armstrong and Robert Armstrong, a sister 
Norma Szalai; his son Larry Swartz and daughter-in-law Aileen Armstrong. 
 
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at MARCY FUNERAL 
HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut with Evergreen Lodge 
in charge. 
 
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

 CONNEAUT – Jeanette R. Cox, formerly of 
Conneaut, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 in the Western Reserve Masonic 
Community in Medina. 
 
Born in Conneaut on Jan. 4, 1913, the daughter of the late Robert B. and 
Phoebe (Randall) Spicer, she had resided in Conneaut most of her life and 
also lived in Bellvue, Ohio for several years, the past year she resided in 
Medina. She was employed for many years at the former Goldette as a seamstress. 
She was a member of East Conneaut United Methodist Church. 
 
Mrs. Cox was a graduate of Conneaut High School with the class of 1930. 
She was an avid reader and enjoyed being with her family and friends and was a 
talented seamstress and needlework hobbyist. She was a member and past Noble 
Grand of Salem Rebekah Lodge #385, of Conneaut. She was a member and past 
Noble Grand of Speedwell Rebekah Lodge of Bellvue and was a member of the Rose 
Chapter Order of Eastern Star #22. She was also a member of Lone Star Grange and 
the Pamona Grange. 
 
Survivors include her daughter Joan Curtis of Lewis Center, Ohio; five 
grandchildren, Greig Curtis of Conneaut, Bonnie Harris of Medina, Jill 
(Robert) Rudler of New Albany, Ohio, Sarah (Steve) Beall of Hudson, Ohio and 
Jack (Linda) Curtis of Westerville, Ohio; six great-grandchildren, four 
great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
 
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur to whom she 
had been married for 42 years and two sisters, Ruth Hall and Mary Spicer, in 
infancy. 
 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.. Monday, Oct. 18 at THOMPSON-SMITH 
FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut with Rev. Armondo Arellano pastor 
of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church officiating assisted by the Rev. 
Hugh Hubbard, a family friend. 
 
Interment will be made in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

MONROE – Rachel A. Cole, of South Monroe Center Rd., Monroe Twp., 
died Friday morning, Oct. 15, 2004 at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie, Pa., 
following a three-year illness. 
 
A lifelong area resident, Mrs. Cole was born Oct. 16, 1933 in Girard, Pa., a 
daughter of J. Clifford and Bernice (Griffey) Wheeler. 
 
She was valedictorian of the 1951 graduating class of Springfield, PA High 
School and graduated in 1954 from Hamot School of Nursing. Mrs. Cole served as 
office nurse for Dr. Stephen Gates in Conneaut for over 30 years and 
assisted her husband in his business, Robert A. Cole Plastering. 
 
She was an active member of the Federated Church of East Springfield, Pa., where 
she held several volunteer positions including a number of years as church 
pianist. She also was a former board member of the Conneaut Savings Bank, 
and enjoyed camping with her family, gardening and knitting. Mrs. Cole was a 
life-long dedicated caregiver to her extended family and friends. 
 
Survivors include her husband Robert A. Cole, whom she married Sept. 17, 1955; a 
daughter Bobbi A. (Mark) Wiseman of Bradford, Oh; a son, Ronald A. (Bridget) 
Cole of Chardon; a sister, Marjorie M. Kantola of West Springfield, Pa. Also 
surviving are grandchildren Kelsey, Allison and Daniel Wiseman and Mitchell, 
Mason and Regan Cole. 
 
Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her parents. 
 
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18 at the Federated

Born January 5, 1930 in Andover, OH, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Yola 
(Grice) Peck. She was a graduate of Conneaut High School. 
 
Before her retirement, she was a Veterinarian Technician. 
 
Mrs. DiGiacomo was a member of the First Methodist Church of Ashtabula and was 
active in the Ashtabula High School Boosters when her children were students. 
 
She enjoyed knitting and caring for animals. 
 
Survivors include her husband, George of 47 years; children, Steve (Laura) of 
Harpersfield, Michelle DiGiacomo of Placierville, CA, Michael (Pam) of 
Ashtabula, and Gary of Jefferson; and five grandchildren, Steve, Carley, Connor, 
Ryan, and Joseph DiGiacomo. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her stepfather, Elmer J. Whaley.

Born in Conneaut, June 19, 1942, he was the son of the late Martin J. and 
Cecelia (Best) Conoboy and had resided here his entire life. 
 
Mr. Conoboy was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Loyal Order of Moose #472. 
 
In his leisure time, he enjoyed cards, bingo, sports, picture puzzles, and being 
with his family and friends. 
 
Survivors include a sister, Coletta Conoboy, and a brother, Martin B. Conoboy, 
both of Conneaut; his sister-in-law, Marie L. Conoboy of Jefferson; and 
several nieces and nephews, including Sharon M. Conoboy, Joseph P. Conoboy,

CONNEAUT — Adah Irene Fralic, age 88, of South Ridge Road, Conneaut, 
OH, died Monday, October 18, 2004, at the Harrington Home in Conneaut. 
 
Born January 31, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Clyde H. and Mabel 
(Blakeslee) Smith and had resided in Conneaut her entire life. 
 
She was a member of the South Ridge Baptist Church where she taught Bible School 
for several years. She was a 50 year member of the Rose Chapter Order of Eastern 
Star #22, the Wimarine Club and was it’s oldest member. 
 
In her earlier years, she owned and operated a ceramic studio in her home and 
was also a 4-H Leader for seven years. 
 
She is survived by her daughter, Jean (Ford) Bailey of North Springfield; a son, 
James (Linda) Fralic of Conneaut; seven grandchildren, Mark Bailey, 
Gregory Bailey, Brad (Bonnie) Fralic, Robert (Shannon) Fralic, Terry (Jenny) 
Fralic, Cheryl (Keith) Myers, and Karyn (Curt) Weidenaar; 12 
great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Charlotte Anderson and Needa Simmons, 
both of Conneaut, and Ruth Hazen of West Springfield. 
 
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; three 
brothers, Clyde E., Charles G. and Allen H. Smith; and one granddaughter, Gayle

A Girard resident for the past 15 years, he was a member of New Life Christian 
Fellowship in Girard.

and stepmother Stanley and Wilma Walker of Ashtabula; two daughters, Angela 
Ramey of Louisiana and Jennifer Hutchison of Ohio; three sisters, Linda Morse of

MONROE – Gerald C. English, 77, of Monroe Township, died Monday morning,

A lifelong township resident, he was born Oct. 11, 1927, in Kelloggsville and 
was a son of Roy and Elva (Hoover) English. 
 
Mr. English served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, and he was employed 
for 40 years at Union Carbide/Elkem Metals, retiring in 1984. He was a member of 
St. Andrew’s Church where he was active in the Men’s Club and also was a member 
of the Ashtabula Post of the V.F.W. Mr. English enjoyed hunting, woodworking, 
gardening, traveling with his wife and spending time with his family. 
 
Survivors include his wife Therese (Remedios) English; three daughters, Margaret 
(Jerry) Nappi of Austinburg, Barbara (Frank) Adley and Susan English, all of 
Ashtabula; two sons, Daniel (Jane) of Kingsville and Christopher (Linda) of 
Hendersonville, NC; his sister Evelyn (Ralph) Butler of Monroe Township; two

Mrs. Storozuk was employed by the former Bell Telephone Co. of Ashtabula and 
Double A Leather Co. before retiring several years ago. Mrs. Storozuk was a 
member of the Monroe Suburbanites, Monroe Mother & Father Club, 
Pierpont Fire Bells and the Mini Macs Club. In her spare time she enjoyed 
reading, traveling, crocheting, making doll houses and being with her family 
especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, PA — Linda A. Hossman Cross, age 61, of State Line Road, West 
Springfield, Pa, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, at her home following a brief 
illness. 
 
Linda was born January 20, 1941 in Erie, PA, a daughter of the late Walter E. 
and Ann (Faytak) Hossman. She graduated from Girard’s Rice Avenue Union High 
School in 1958 and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary 
Education from the Indiana State Teachers College, (now Indiana University of 
Pennsylvania) in 1962. 
 
She was a teacher at the elementary levels for many years in Simi Valley, CA, 
later returning to Girard to teach at St. John’s Catholic School in Girard. She 
most recently taught at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School in Conneaut. 
 
She was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Albion; the Delta Zeta 
Sorority; was a former Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout den mother in the Simi 
Valley area; and loved crocheting, shopping, traveling, and especially being 
with her grandkids. 
 
She is survived by her husband, Joe Cross, whom she married October 20, 1962, in 
Girard; also by two daughters, Michelle L. Shipe and her husband, Jonas, of 
Saugus, CA and Marsha A. Cross of Cockeyville, MD; two sons, Mark E. Cross and 
his wife, Suzette, of Lake City, PA and Michael C. Cross and his wife, Lee, of 
Woodbridge, VA; a sister, Wilma Legnard and her husband, James, of Peterborough, 
NH; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Orlo C. Penniman 
   
CONNEAUT – Orlo C. Penniman, 91 of Conneaut, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 
26, 2004 at Inn-Conneaut Health Center where he had been a patient for the past 
three years. 
 
A Conneaut resident since 1949, Mr. Penniman moved here from Girard, Pa. 
He was born on Oct. 7, 1913 in Linesville, Pa, a son of William and Cora 
(McKinney) Penniman. 
 
Mr. Penniman retired from the former Astatic Corp and had been employed by the 
Girard Model Works and C.G. Woods, both of Girard. He was a tool and die setter 
and machine operator. 
 
A member of the Conneaut Church of God, he enjoyed baseball, especially 
the Cleveland Indians and was a well known musician in the area playing lead 
guitar for the Dave Angerer and the Ranch Hands Band for many years. He also 
enjoyed playing the organ at home, doing string arts, painting, repairing and 
building clocks and caring for his pet dog “Baby”. 
 
Survivors include his wife Esther E. (Summers) Penniman of Conneaut; a 
daughter Pamela (David) Daggett of East Springfield, Pa; a son William A. 
(Sonja) Penniman of Conneaut; ten grandchildren and numerous great and 
great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are his stepchildren Scott Leadingham 
and Pamela Archer of Columbus, Ohio. 
 
Mr. Penniman was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hazel Turner and 
Daisy West; a brother Dale and a son Ronald. 
 
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at MARCY FUNERAL HOME 
AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street with the Rev. Raymond Lamb, pastor of 
the Church of God officiating. 
 
Burial will be in Linesville, Pennsylvania Cemetery. 
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time 
of service. 
Memorial contributions may be given to the Building Fund of the Conneaut Church 
of God. 
Larry W. Bortnick, Sr. 
 
CONNEAUT — Larry William Bortnick, Sr., age 63, of Mill Street, 
Conneaut, OH, died Monday, October 25, 2004, at Self Regional Hospital, 
Greenwood, SC. 
 
Born June 19, 1941 in Beaver Center, PA, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary 
Melnik Bortnick. 
 
Mr. Bortnick was a self-employed Millwright and was of the Catholic faith. 
 
Survivors include three children, Larry Bortnick, Jr. of Mentor, OH, Lorie 
Milano of North Royalton, OH and Lance Bortnick of Willoughby, OH; three 
grandchildren; former wife, Helen Bortnick Esposito; two sisters, Alice Barbee 
of Charlotte, NC and Doreen Nelson of Conneautville, PA; five brothers, Pete 
Bortnick of Stuart, FL, David Bortnick of Wickliffe, OH, James Bortnick of 
Conneautville, PA, Donald Bortnick of Conneaut, OH and William Bortnick of 
Conneautville, PA; brother-in-law, Mike McBride of Greenwood, SC; and several 
nieces and nephews. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents. 
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2004, 
at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 501 Washington Street, Conneautville, PA, with 
Reverend Fr. John Walsh, Pastor of St. Peter’s, officiating. Interment will 
be in Conneautville Cemetery. 
 
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2004, at WHITE-COOL 
FUNERAL HOME, 1405 Main Street, Conneautville, PA 16406, who is in charge of 
arrangements. 
Ralph R. Wagoner 
 
CONNEAUT — Ralph Russell Wagoner, age 88, of Fifield Avenue, Conneaut, 
OH, died Wednesday, October 27, 2004, in Ashtabula County Medical Center. 
 
Born in Conneaut on September 10, 1916, the son of the late Ralph E. and 
Mamie (Carlson) Wagoner, he had resided here most of his life. 
 
Mr. Wagoner was employed for several years at the former Astatic Corporation and 
was also employed by the former Nickle Plate and New York Central Railroads from 
where he retired as a machinist. 
 
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #408 and in his leisure time 
enjoyed fishing and collecting coins. 
 
He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Sprinkle of Jefferson; a son, Russell 
Wagoner of Ector, TX; wife, Jacquelyn of Ashtabula; step-daughter, Deloris 
Wilcox of Telford, PA; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Leonheart of Georgia; step-son, 
Lewis Leonheart of Pittsburgh, PA; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. 
 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Wagoner; 
step-son, Methis Leonheart; and grandson, Danny. 
 
Graveside Services will be held Friday, October 29, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the 
Gageville Cemetery with Tim Kraus, pastor of the Church of Christ, 
officiating.

Alex F. Milac 
   
CONNEAUT — Alex F. Milac, age 89, passed away at Hospice of Dayton, OH, 
on Thursday, October 28, 2004.  
 
Born in Cleveland, OH on June 24, 1915 to Alex and Johanna Milac, he moved to 
Conneaut at the age of three where he resided until the summer of 2003, when 
he moved to be with family members in Beavercreek, OH. He graduated from 
Conneaut High School in 1933, and worked on the Nickel Plate Railroad for 42 
years, beginning as an apprentice and retiring as a car shop foreman in 1975.
 
 
For over 50 years, Alex gave accordion lessons and also spent time playing in a 
band throughtout the area. An avid golfer and bowler, he shot his age at 72 and 
recorded holes-in-one at the Conneaut Shores Country Club.  
 
He leaves to cherish his memory; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Paul Newman 
of Beavercreek, OH; grandchildren, Paul Newman, Jr. and his wife, Kirsten, of 
New York City, Scott Newman of New York City, Michele Puterbaugh along with her 
husband, Larry, and their two children, Sam (4), who Alex affectionately called 
"high test" and Mya (1 1/2) of Miamisburg, OH; his sister Mary Berfield; 
sister-in-law, Rosamond Marn and God-daughters, Judy Brown and Mary Kay 
Callahan, all of Conneaut, OH; sisters-in-law, Molly Vatavuk of Erie, PA and 
Rose Bernard of Pittsburgh, PA; along with brother-in-law, Bill Lenarcic and his 
wife, Stacy, of Sharon, PA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
 
 
Alex was preceded in death by his wife, Christina in 1995; his parents, Alex and 
Johanna Milac; stepfather, Valentine Marn; brothers, Frank Milac and Joseph Marn; 
a sister, Jennie Palagyi; brothers-in-law, Ray Berfield, James Palagyi, William 
Vatavuk and Jack Benard; brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Frances Lenarcic; 
and father and mother-in-law, Michael and Christina Lenarcic. 
 
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 31, 
2004, at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.
 
 
Mass of the Christian Burial will be conducted on Monday, November 1, 2004, at 
10 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church in Conneaut, with Father Raymond Thomas 
officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North 
Kingsville, OH.  
 
Donations should be made to Hospice of Dayton and St. Frances Cabrini Church, 
with envelopes available at the Funeral Home. 
 
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Hospice for the 
wonderful car Alex received.

CONNEAUT – Evelyn R. Morgan, 96, formerly of Sandusky St., Conneaut 
died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004 at Harrington Care Home in Conneaut. Funeral 
service will be on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND 
CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. Calling hour will be on

Albert Hubbard 
   
ASHTABULA – Former Conneaut resident Albert L. Hubbard, 81 of Ashtabula, 
died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 28, 2004 at Ashtabula County Medical Center 
following a five-month illness. 
 
He was born March 15, 1923 in Circleville, Ohio and was a son of Hugh H. and 
Helen M. (Stout) Hubbard. 
 
A 1941 graduate of Rowe High School, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. 
Army serving in the European Theater as a heavy equipment operator. He was 
formerly employed at the Nickel Plate Railroad and Conneaut Rubber & 
Plastics before becoming a rural letter carrier with the Conneaut Post 
Office from which he retired in 1983. 
 
He was a member of East Conneaut United Methodist Church and had attended 
First Baptist Church since moving to Ashtabula. Other memberships include 
Evergreen Lodge #222 F & AM and Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion. He 
enjoyed playing cards, traveling, reading, watching movies, fishing, hunting and 
watching the Cleveland Indians. 
 
Survivors include his wife Marjorie (Rice) Battles Hubbard whom he married June 
20, 1992, of Ashtabula; two daughters, Susan (Bob) March of Conneaut and 
Betty (Larry) Kincaid of Dublin, Ohio; step-daughters Cathryn (Gerald) Thurston 
and Jean (James) Wright of Ashtabula; step-son David (Linda) Battles of St. 
Cloud, FL; his brother Rev. Hugh (Becky) Hubbard of Springfield, Ohio; 
grandchildren, Lisa Quinn, Sarah Sherman, Steve Kincaid and Matt Kincaid; 
step-grandchildren, Jill Shaw, Julie Vacca, Caryn Thurston, Steve Wright, Tom 
Wright, Kimberly Fenton and Dennis Battles; eight step great grandchildren and 
several nieces, nephews and more distant relatives including his cousin William 
(Rose) Calhoun of Conneaut. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Sarah L. Hubbard; and 
his second wife Vera M. Hubbard. 
 
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1 at the MARCY FUNERAL 
HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut with the Rev. Armando 
Arellano of East Conneaut United Methodist Church officiating assisted by Mr. 
Hubbard’s brother Rev. Hugh Hubbard. 
 
Burial with full military honors accorded by Cowle Post #151 will be in East 
Conneaut Cemetery. 
 
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Evergreen Lodge 
will conduct Masonic services at 4 p.m. 
 
Memorial contributions may be made to East Conneaut United Methodist 
Church or to Ashtabula First Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the 
funeral home. 
Evelyn Morgan 
   
CONNEAUT – Evelyn Morgan, 96, formerly of Sandusky St., Conneaut 
died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004 at the Harrington Care Home in Conneaut, 
where she resided for a number of years. 
 
She was born July 19, 1908 in Conneaut, a daughter of the late Frank A. 
and Susie M. (Carlson) Gross. 
 
She was employed as a telephone operator with the Conneaut Telephone Co. 
and had owned and operated an antique business called the “Old Homestead” for 20 
years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Methodist 
Women, various Bridge Clubs and the Literacy Club. She was an election precinct 
worker and enjoyed playing pinochle, oil painting, crocheting, knitting, tatting 
and traveling. She especially enjoyed visiting her sisters in Florida and played 
an active part in raising her nieces and nephews. 
 
Survivors include a sister, Mazie Spell; a brother, R. Donald Gross, both of 
Conneaut; her nieces, Nancy Loomis of Conneaut and Sally Persa of 
Bethlehem, Pa., Martha Mullen of Lakeworth, FL; her nephews, Norman and Robert 
Gross, both of Conneaut, George Gross of Chardon, Ohio, Jeffrey Gross of 
Poquoson, VA, Steven Gross of Novato, CA. Also surviving are her grand nieces, 
Sally Campbell, Natalie Huya, Claudia and Erika Loomis, Megan and Nancy Persa, 
Peggy, Stacy and Shari Gross, Allison and Lydia Gross, and her grand nephews, 
Dean, Kirk, Andrew, William and Tim Gross and her great grand nieces Amanda 
Gross, Christine Seppi and great grand nephews Christopher Gross, Howie 
Campbell, David and Christopher Seppi. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray J. Morgan in 1971; her 
sister, Mildred Gross and five brothers, Wilburt, Fred, Robert, Russell and 
Richard Gross. 
 
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the 
MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut with 
Rev. Chuck Graham, pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. 
Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, N. Kingsville. Food and 
fellowship will be at the First United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo St., 
Conneaut following the graveside service. 
 
Calling hour will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial 
contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church. Envelopes are 
available at the funeral home
