CONNEAUT – ELMA HENRETTA, 90, of Broad Street, Conneaut, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at the home of her son in Richmond Heights, Ohio. Services will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Thursday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Mackey officiating. Norman D. Hazen

CONNEAUT – Norman D. Hazen, 78, of Conneaut died Wednesday morning, September 1, 2004, at his home.

He was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Conneaut and was the son of Alvah and Bertha (Smith) Hazen.

A 1944 Conneaut High School graduate, Mr. Hazen was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was formerly employed at the Astatic Corporation, was custodian at Conneaut High School and City Hall before retiring in 2001 from the City of Conneaut Waste Water Treatment Plant as operator. He also served as bookkeeper at Arcaro’s Saddlery at one time.

Mr. Hazen was a member of the Bethlechem Messianic Congregation in Conneaut under Mt. Calvary International, Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation where he served as support group leader, was a former member of the Sam Wharram Nature Club, and was a founding member of the Conneaut Jaycee’s. He enjoyed carpentry and built his own home. He also was a birder and enjoyed nature, gardening and yard work, fishing, cooking and baking, and traveling having gone recently to Ireland.

Survivors include his wife, Trudy (Bearce) Hazen whom he married Dec. 6, 1980; two sons, Jeffrey D. Hazen of Girard, Pennsylvania and Dale D. (Rachel) Hazen of South Wales, New York; two sisters, Faye (Norman) Gross and Nancy (Donald) Meinke, all of Conneaut and three grandchildren, Austin, Andrew and Stephanie Page Hazen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Zola Page Hazen and a brother Roland Hazen.

A celebration of his home going will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Foursquare Gospel Church, 641 Mill St., Conneaut, officiated by Mr. Hazen’s wife, Pastor Trudy Hazen.

Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery with the American Legion conducting military rites.

Friends may call at THE MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, on Friday, Sept. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The family requests no flowers and that memorial contributions be made to the family for a fund yet to be determined.

William D. Alley, Sr.

SEBRING, FLORIDA – William D. Alley, Sr., 78, of Sebring, FL, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2004, in Sebring.

He was born Aug. 2, 1926, in Ivanhoe, VI, and had been a resident of Sebring since 1980, coming from Kingsville, OH.

He and his son owned Memory Makin’ Guides, a charter fishing and tours business in the Big Bass Lakes Region of central Florida. He was retired from Union Carbide in Ashtabula, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was an avid fisherman, guide and sports fan and loved hunting. He was a great family man and was loved by all.

He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Alley, Sebring; sons, William (and Karen) Alley, of Anita, Pennsylvania, and Reno (and Vickie) Alley, of Frostproof, Florida; daughters, Dee (and Vernon) Johns, of Zolfo Springs, Rhonda (and Bill) Cusano, of Kingsville; stepson, Dwayne (Trish) Dobbins, of Sebring; stepdaughter, Paula White, of Sebring; brothers, David Alley, of Ashtabula, Carl Alley, of Austinville, Virginia, Danny Kay Alley, of Ivanhoe, Virginia and Richard Alley, of Roanoke, Virginia; sisters, Nancy Shupe, of Fries, Virginia and Virginia Byrd, of Galaxy, Virginia; fifteen grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Aug. 29 in the Chapel of STEPHENSON-NELSON FUNERAL HOME, Sebring, with the Rev. Mike Adams officiating.

Cremation and arrangements are being handled by STEPHEN-NELSON FUNERAL HOME, Sebring Florida.

Elma L. Henretta

CONNEAUT – Elma L. Henretta, 90, of Broad St., Conneaut, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at the home of her son in Richmond Hts., Ohio. Born in Conneaut on Feb. 3, 1913 the daughter of the late Jacob and Emma Sillanpaa she had resided in Conneaut her entire life.

Mrs. Henretta was employed for several years at the Conneaut Recreation Center as a waitress. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and in her leisure time enjoyed doing yard work.

She is survived by two sons, James M. and his wife, Anna, of Mayfield Hts., and Gary L. and his wife Rita, of Richmond Hts. Seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and a brother, Raymond Sillanpaa of Conneaut.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Harry, a sister Betty Shoemaker and a brother Einar Sillanpaa.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, Sept. 2 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Larry Mackey officiating.

Friends may call at the church from noon until the time of the service.

The family suggests that memorials be made in her name to Hospice of Western Reserve.

Envelopes will be available at the church or at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut.

Brenda S. Kercher

CONNEAUT – Brenda S. Kercher, 54, of Conneaut, died Monday, August 30, 2004 at her home.

She was born August 1, 1950, in Ashville, North Carolina and was a daughter of Allen D. and Lucille (Cochran) Farmer.

A Conneaut resident most of her life, she attended Erie Business Center. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bird watching, baking, gardening and spending time with her granddaughter.

Survivors include her daughter Gretchen (Brian) Vona of Erie, Pennsylvania; her sister Wanda Johnson of San Diego, California; her brother Tony D. Farmer of Conneaut and her granddaughter Olivia G. Vona of Erie, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

There will be no visitation or services at this time.

Gilbert M. Taylor

CONNEAUT – Gilbert M. Taylor, 60, of Sandusky Street, Conneaut, died unexpectedly Monday, August 30, 2004, while at work.

Born in Youngstown on March 24, 1944, the son of Ernest and Grace (Andrews) Taylor, he had resided in Conneaut most of his life.

Mr. Taylor was employed by Stevens Construction Company as a laborer. He was a Vietnam Veteran and served with the United States Marine Corp. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing chess, fishing and being with this grandchildren.

He is survived by his mother Grace Taylor, of Conneaut; a daughter, Sarah Lucas, of Conneaut; four sons, Mike and Nathan Taylor, of Winfield, West Virginia and Matthew and Doug Taylor, of Conneaut; two grandchildren, Abigail Taylor and Natalie Lucas; two brothers, Jeff Taylor, of Conneaut and Ernie (Butch) Taylor of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Taylor.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. Armando Arellano, pastor of the East Conneaut United Methodist Church officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service. Following the cremation interment will be made in Glenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Allen D. Farmer

CLEVELAND – Allen D. Farmer, 79, of Conneaut, died Tuesday, August 31, at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He was born November 3, 1924, in Nicholson, GA, a son of W. E. and Oza Mae (Crawford) Farmer.

Mr. Farmer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and moved to Conneaut in 1953 from Commerce, GA. He retired in 1986 after 21 years of service with The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church, was an avid gardener, and enjoyed fishing and talking with the neighborhood kids.

Survivors include a daughter Wanda (John) Jones of San Diego, CA; a son Tony D. (Marta) Farmer of Conneaut; a number of brothers and sisters; four grandchildren, Shannan Farmer, Gretchen Vona, Michael Gojich, and Lucyann Gojich; and a great granddaughter Olivia Gianna Vona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucille Farmer, and a daughter Brenda Kercher.

Private services will be held at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut with Rev. Chuck Graham, pastor of First United Methodist Church officiating. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

The family requests no flowers; however memorial contributions may be made to the Conneaut Rescue Squad. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

EAST SPRINGFIELD – Charles R. Bartlett, Sr., age 72 of East Springfield, PA died early Wednesday morning, September 1, 2004 at his home. Clara M. Gee

JEFFERSON – Clara M. Gee, 94, of West Main Road, Conneaut, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, in the Jefferson Geriatric Center.

Born in Crawford County, PA, May 11, 1910, the daughter of the late Amos and Zella (Hills) Terrill, she had resided in the Monroe Township, and Conneaut area most of her life.

Mrs. Gee was employed by the former Astatic Corp. as an assembler for 31 years. In her earlier years she and her husband enjoyed showing horses and ponies at the Albion Fair and the former Happy Riders Club. She enjoyed spending her winter months in Florida.

Survivors include a daughter Ruth Leffel of Madison, a son Gordon and his wife Yvonne Gee of Clarksville, Maryland, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Raymond (Sam) Gee, to whom she was married Oct. 14, 1929, seven sisters, Elva, Edna, Neva, Gladys, Gertrude, Frieda, and Reba, and two brothers, Harley and her twin brother Plara.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. John Toth, a family friend, officiating. Interment will follow in Kingsville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

William A. Riley, Jr.

CONNEAUT — William A. Riley, Jr., age 52, of Harbor Street, Conneaut, OH, died Sunday morning, September 5, 2004, in his sleep of a probable coronary.

Mr. Riley was born in Conneaut on August 7, 1952, a son of William A. Riley, Sr. and Margaret “Peg” (Whitman) Pollock. He lived in Conneaut most of his life, and served with both the U.S. Air Force and U. S. Army for a total of 12 years.

Following his service time, he was employed by Village Green in North Kingsville; assisted his father in the operation of Moonlight Inn; and for the past 10 years, was the Workers Compensation Specialist in the office of Dr. Nasimullah Rehmatullah in Conneaut.

An avid Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan, Bill also enjoyed playing pool and billiards, yard work, and at one time was a Boy Scout with Troop #38.

He played ball in CLYO leagues and was a former member of DeMolay of Conneaut. His Masonic memberships included: Evergreen Lodge #222 F&AM, and Valley of Cleveland Scottish Rite, where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the National American Legion, and enjoyed the family’s two cats Winkers and Doodie.

Survivors include his fiancée, Debra Somppi of Conneaut; his parents, Peg Pollock and Bill and Marie Riley, all of Conneaut; a sister, Ann Marie Savel of Seattle, WA; a brother, Donald A. (Elaine) Riley of Ashtabula, OH; and his aunt, Theresa Riley and cousin, Charley Riley III, both of Satellite Beach, FL.

Mr. Riley was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lou and Mildred Whitman and Charles and Eileen Riley.

Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Walter Coy, pastor of United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville with Full Military Honors by American Legion Post #151 of Conneaut.

Calling Hours were held on Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at the Funeral Home with Masonic Services scheduled at 7:45 p.m. Further Visitation will be today, Wednesday, September 8, 2004, beginning at 10 a.m.

Ruth Adele Russell

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – Ruth Adele Russell, 87, of Jacksonville, Florida, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 in Jacksonville.

A Florida resident since March 1987, she previously lived in Geneva for over 40 years.

Born May 27, 1917 in Chardon she married Arthur W. Russell on Jan. 3, 1940 in Madison.

She was a member of Geneva First United Methodist Church, Calvary United Methodist Church in Orange Park, Florida, Riverside United Methodist Church in Jacksonville and United Methodist Women and Friendship Club. She was also a member of Senior Friends where she organized The Pinochle Club. She was a former member and past president of Geneva American Legion and past president of Madison Rebecca Lodge #124. She also volunteered with Hubbard House for Battered Women in Orange Park, Florida.

She was a beautician at The Geneva Beauty Salon.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Rae Russell of Jacksonville, Louise Marie (Richard) Stein of Geneva, and Holly Jean (Dale) Hayes of Jefferson and one brother, Dr. Herschel A. Rhodes of Upper Sandusky.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen (Smith) and Slade Newton Rhodes; her husband, Arthur W. Russell in 1983 and a sister, Doris Jean Rhodes.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept.. 10 at THE BEHM FAMILY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 175 S. Broadway, Geneva.

Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Kingsville, Ohio.

Donald E. Wiley

CONNEAUT – Donald E. Wiley, 80, of Conneaut, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Cuyahoga Falls and was a son of David H. and Emma (Happel) Wiley.

Mr. Wiley graduated as valedictorian in 1942 from East High School in Cleveland and received a degree in chemical engineering in 1947 from Case Institute of Technology.

He was a chemical engineer at the former Exomet, Air Products Chemicals and retired from Foseco in 1986 where he was involved in research and development and received several patents. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of State Line United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer, and was also a 4-H leader, a member of the Farm Bureau, and for 25 years was an active member of the Kiwanis Club serving as president and treasurer. He was involved in politics at one time in the former Lakeville community and participated in the Conneaut zoning and planning commissions.

He enjoyed his family, farming, raising livestock, fixing up his home, bowling, was a dog lover, and an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. He also enjoyed hunting and observing wildlife.

Survivors include his wife Helen (Brown) Wiley whom he married June 11, 1948; his son, David E. Wiley of Conneaut; seven daughters, Betty C. (Dennis) Stevens of Painesville, Bonnie C. (Joseph) Roach of Cary, North Carolina, Barbara C. (Roger) Storozuk of Becksville, Donna M. (Drew) Wiley-Hazzlerigg of Houston, Texas, Deborah J. (Ronald) Keyes of Conneaut, Pamela A. Wiley of Erie and Patricia L. (Douglas) Rudler of Conneaut; fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother David H. Wiley Jr., and a sister Evelyn Davis.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 at the State Line United Methodist Church, 7330 Bushnell Rd., Conneaut, with the Rev. Richard L. Smith officiating. Burial will be in East Conneaut Cemetery.

Friends may call at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday at the church beginning at 10 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the State Line United Methodist Church.

Jean D. Baker

CONNEAUT – Jean D. Baker, age 79, died Wednesday afternoon, September 8, 2004 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.

Jean was born October 31, 2004 in Conneaut the daughter of Nicholas and Louise (Notte) Pape. She was a graduate of Conneaut High Class of 1942. She worked for a time at the former Astatic Corporation as an assembler and for many years worked as a waitress at Papes restaurant. Jean was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, the Eagles Club, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed riding the golf cart to watch her husband Hal play golf. Jean loved to cook, crochet, vacationing with her family and especially loved the time she spent with her grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her husband Hal, whom she married May 25, 1946 at St. Mary Church, Conneaut; three sons, Rick & Lori Baker of Erie, Pa, Tom & Nancy Baker of Conneaut, Scott & Cindy Baker of North Kingsville; 7 grandchildren Nevan, Mike, Jenna, Hallie, Anthony, Jeremy and Danielle Baker; and one sister Helen Stanziano of Detroit, Michigan.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Mary Michelle (1964); three brothers, Albert Pape, Paul Pape and Anthony (Nin) Pape; three sisters, Angeline Cantigello, Mary Green and Julie Derseweh.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2004 at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Conneaut at the convenience of the family.

Irene K. Williams

CONNEAUT — Irene Koons Williams, age 67, died Saturday evening, September 11, 2004, at her home in Conneaut, OH, following a lengthy illness.

A daughter of the late Ture and Hazel (Fails) Pearson, Mrs. Williams was born in Conneaut on March 21, 1937, and lived in the area most of her life.

She attended Conneaut schools and was a 30-year employee of the Conneaut General Electric, with over 25 years of perfect attendance.

Mrs. Williams enjoyed being with her family, helping others, bowling, ceramics, cooking, and landscaping. She also enjoyed crocheting, and she made afghans for family and friends. She was an avid gardener and always had a picture-perfect garden.

Survivors include four children, Patti (Cary) Sturm of Streetsboro, OH, Cindy (Jim) Richardson of Moorpark, CA, Robert (JoAnn) of Palm Springs, CA, and Larry (Helen) of Zanesville, IN. There are 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are siblings Eleanor (Donald) Kallio and Doris (Anthony) Vendetti, all of Conneaut, OH, Jane (Robert) Cowen of Clay, WV, Rosemary (Ernest) Raisian of Sebring, FL, Linda (Rick) Port of Las Vegas, NV, Ruth (Lou) Chun of Honolulu, HI, Harold (Elsie) Pearson of Niles, OH, and Charles (Betty) Pearson of Conneaut, OH.

Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Larry Koons and Clyde Williams; and companion, Tom Ross.

Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Rick Plucknett, of the Federated Church of East Springfield, PA, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 12 p.m. (noon) until the time of Service.

Stephen M. Bartone

ASHTABULA – Stephen M. Bartone, age 55, of Ashtabula Township, died Sunday afternoon, September 12, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Bartone was born September 22, 1948, in Conneaut, the son of Forindo (Shorty) and Helen (Vigorito) Bartone. He was a 1966 CHS graduate. Steve was very proud of his association with the Conneaut Police Department as an officer, from 1970–73, and a reserve officer for many years.

He was self-employed, beginning in 1973; he owned and operated Bartone’s Service in Conneaut, then Bartone’s State Line at Exit 1 in Pennsylvania and in Ashtabula as Bartone’s Towing and Repair from which he retired in 2001.

Steve enjoyed his family and his businesses. He especially loved being with his two granddaughters, Kristen and Helina. He enjoyed working and building things. He loved to cook for lots of people and especially all the old family Italian recipes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Angeline Bartone.

Steve is survived by his wife, Zoanna (Humphrey) Bartone, whom he married August 17, 1968; a son, Michael S. (Kathy) Bartone of Andover; two granddaughters, Kristen and Helina Bartone; three sisters, Loretta (Nick) Mirando of Chicago, Janet (Wayne) Cain of Indianapolis, and Lucille (James) Krafchak of Las Vegas.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut, and 12 noon till 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 16, 2004.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, September 16, 2004, at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut.

Orda L. Bright

CONNEAUT – Orda L. Bright, 66, of Conneaut, died Friday afternoon, September 10, 2004, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital in Conneaut.

Born Feb. 16, 1938, in Sutton, West Virginia, he was the son of Russell and Reatha (Bright) Bankhead.

He had lived in Conneaut four years, coming from Ashtabula. He married Linda Hickman and was a truck driver for Farinacci Lumber in Chardon for more than twenty years.

Hobbies included hunting, and he was a member of the National Rifle Association and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; three sons, Roger (Marie) Bright of Middlefield, Randy Bright of Cleveland, and Russell (Susan) Bright of Pierpont; two daughters, Connie (Alan) Wrentmore of Middlefield, and Brenda Jones of Ashtabula; one sister, Betty Shreve of Waltham, Massachusetts; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gene Roby and Gail Roby.

Per the family’s request, no service or visitation will be observed.

Juanita D. Carpenter

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Juanita D. Carpenter, age 78, of Lake Road, west Saybrook Township, died Saturday, September 11, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

She was born May 19, 1926, in Morristown, TN, the daughter of Thomas H. and Lucy Jane (Hipshire) Davidson, and moved to the Ashtabula area in 1955.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ashtabula and a member of Covered Bridge Chapter #591, Order of Eastern Star.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, and gardening.

Surviving her are two sons, Donald D. and Thomas D. Carpenter, both of Ashtabula; two grandchildren, Jennifer and David Carpenter; and a brother, Bradford Davidson of Morristown, TN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John H. Carpenter, in 1996; five brothers, Thomas H., Kemp, Frank, P.L., and Chester Davidson; and a sister, Ruby Jewell Reed.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the ROSS–BILLMAN FUNERAL HOME, 526 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Reverend Ray Williams, of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville, OH.

Robert C. ‘Dusty’ Rhodes

CONNEAUT – Robert C. “Dusty” Rhodes, 84, of Conneaut, died late Sunday afternoon, September 12, 2004, at The Villa at the Lake.

He was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Conneaut, and was the son of Albert and Mabel (Cheney) Rhodes.

A 1937 graduate of Conneaut High School, Mr. Rhodes was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II, and was employed at The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company for 34 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Amboy United Methodist Church and Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion, where he served on the honor guard and firing squad. He enjoyed music and sang solos for church and for weddings. During high school, he was named all-county football guard and continued his interest in all sports. Following his retirement, he became interested in sailboating and often crewed with his wife on sailboats being delivered from Nantucket to Florida.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara C. (Cheney) Rhodes, whom he married Jan. 9, 1943; two sons, John of Madison, and Stephen D. (Sally) Rhodes of Conneaut; his daughter Elliott (Mark) Rhodes-Woodburn of Kingsville; four grandchildren, Emily (Marcus) Rhodes-Wacker, Juliann (Daniel) Rhodes-Bernstein, Stephen H. (Laura) Rhodes, and Mark (Amy) Rhodes; and four great-grandchildren, Aidan, Andrew, Marcus and Holden.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Zorn.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas, pastor of St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini Churches, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

MADISON - Juanita L. Hinebaugh, age 69, of Madison, OH, died Monday, September 13, 2004, at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

Born August 22, 1935 in Hazelton, WV, she lived in Mentor most of her life, moving to Madison just a short while ago.

Mrs. Hinebaugh was a former member of Victory Baptist Church in Mentor, a member of Women of the Moose in Eastlake, and enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling to West Virginia and Maryland, visiting as often as she could.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She worked in the office of Laketran, retiring in 1997 after many years of service.

Survivors include her children, Ervin Hinebaugh, Jr., of Jefferson, Pamela Hinebaugh of Las Vegas, Kimberly Hinebaugh of Conneaut, and Sherri (David) Kreiling of Conneaut;  11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and dear friend, Shelby Smith of Mentor.

Her husband, Ervin Hinebaugh, Sr., and brother, David Taylor, are deceased.

ASHTABULA — Elvira A. Jaskela, 88, of Ashtabula, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville.

She was born March 26, 1916 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Jacob and Aina (Langilla) Myllymaki and was a lifelong Ashtabula resident.

Elvira was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashtabula and belonged to various organizations within the church.

She is survived by sons, Tim of Ashtabula, and Tom of Sarasota, Florida; daughters, Judy Myers of Annadale, Virginia, and Joyce Jaskela of Ashtabula; brothers, Harlan and William Myllymaki of Ashtabula; sister, Betty Laituri of North Palm Beach, Florida; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Vina Karr

CONNEAUT – Vina “Babe” Karr went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 18, 2004, one day after her 90th birthday. She resided at The Villa for the past 5 years, moving to Inn Conneaut on Aug. 16, 2004.

Vina, the daughter of Vina Adams Clark and Terrence Clark, was born on September 17, 1914, in Conneaut and was a lifelong resident of the city.

As a 1933 graduate of CHS, she attended every reunion until recently when her health would not permit. Vina was active in the community, serving as past President of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Leader, Civil Air Patrol Spotter during the 1950s, and a volunteer at The Conneaut Railroad Museum. She belonged to the Miniature Doll House Club and collected Barbie Dolls. She enjoyed showing her collections to friends and family. She was proud of winning a ribbon at the County Fair for her pickles. Vina was a talented seamstress, hand-sewing many originally designed Christmas ornaments for family and friends. Most of all, Vina enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; the grandmother who raised her; and her sister, Louise Ring Westbrook. Vina is survived by her children, Madelon Distelrath, Conneaut, OH; Terry (Shirley) Karr, Antelope, OR; Janie (Dick) Huston, Yorkville, IL; Bernard (Nancy) Karr, Shaker Hts., OH; and Earl (Sharon) Karr, Conneaut, OH; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Ralph G. Shauberger

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Ralph G. Shauberger, age 72, of Reed Road, North Kingsville, OH, died Monday, September 20, 2004, in the UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.

Born in Kingsville on January 24, 1932, the son of the late George A. and Gertrude E. (Sherman) Shauberger, he had resided in North Kingsville and Kingsville his entire life.

He was employed by the Premix Corporation as a security guard and retired in 1997.

He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Ashtabula and a graduate of the former Kingsville High School. He was a member of the North Kingsville Fire Department for 41 years and was a former chief. He was a member of the Kingsville Rescue Squad and former member of the village council.

In 1985, he was named Citizen of the Year.

His hobbies included refinishing wood and coin collecting. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia. He enjoyed bird-watching and feeding birds during the winter. He especially enjoyed taking care of his great-nephew Jacob.

Survivors include his wife, June (Bagnall), to whom he’d been married for the last 46 years; two sons, Jerry and Timothy Shauberger, both of North Kingsville; two grandchildren, Corry and Shawna Shauberger; a sister, Dorothy Lawrence of Conneaut; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark L.; a brother, LeRoy; and two sisters, Margaret and Betty Brunell.

James E. Gillespie

GENEVA — James E. Gillespie, age 80, a Geneva/ Ashtabula resident since 1945, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at UHHS Memorial Hospital of Geneva.

Born May 1, 1924, in White Sulphur Springs, WV, he was a son of the late Henrietta Gillespie. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in the European Theater.

Mr. Gillespie was a serviceman at Ohio Water for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

He married Elaine M. (Rexroad) on June 13, 1986, in Geneva, OH.

He was a lifetime member of Geneva VFW Post #6846.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Gillespie of Geneva; son, James E. ASHTABULA – Clarence R. Wetmore, 87, of Norwood Drive, died Monday, September 20, 2004, at Carington Park.

He was born Sept. 16, 1917, in New London, Connecticut, the son of Ralph and Fannie (Church) Wetmore, and had been an Ashtabula resident most of his life.

Prior to his retirement, he drove a truck for 30 years for Bell Transit-Linde Air, which is now PraxAir.

Mr. Wetmore was involved with the Army–Navy Union and was a member of VFW Post No. 943.

He enjoyed bowling and golfing.

His survivors include one daughter, Beverly Terry, of Ashtabula; and one granddaughter, Lisa Terry of Ashtabula.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice (Ball); one son, Larry Wetmore; two brothers, Daniel and Elwood Wetmore; and his parents.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum prior to his burial. Rev. Kenneth Roberts, Pastor of Pentecostal Church of God, will be officiating.

George W. Hakkio

VENICE, FL — George W. Hakkio, age 75, of Venice, FL and formerly of Conneaut, OH, died Monday, September 20, 2004.

Born May 30, 1929 in Conneaut, OH, he moved to Venice, FL in 1985. A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served as a Lt. (Jg.) during the Korean War. He graduated from Conneaut High School in 1947 and was also a graduate of the University of Kentucky, Lexington.

Mr. Hakkio was employed as an Engineer at RMI in Ashtabula for 29 years.

He was a member of Jacaranda West Country Club in Venice, FL, and was well known for his Christmas Display of lighted animals there.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Susan W. Hakkio of Venice; his mother, Genevieve Hakkio of Conneaut; two daughters, Lisa Purnell of Sugarland, TX, and Betsy Ahola of Brecksville, OH; four grandchildren; and a brother, John Hakkio of Fairview Park, OH.

KINGSVILLE – James H. Ross, 66, of Kingsville, died early Wednesday morning, September 22, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born June 28, 1938, in Beaver Township, PA, a son of Nelson K. and Everil Ruth (Perrin) Ross.

Mr. Ross was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during peacetime in Germany. He lived in Beaver Center, PA, before moving to Kingsville eight years ago and was employed for 24 years in the shipping department of Premix Corp., retiring in 1997. He enjoyed farming and was a member of both the Harmony and Sheffield Granges, and Kelloggsville Church Of The Nazarene.

Survivors include his stepdaughter Theresa Hass of Monroe Twp.; four stepsons, Karl and David Beeman, both of Las Vegas, NV, Howard Beeman of Austinburg and Kevin Beeman of Valley City, CA; two sisters, Elizabeth Ewig of Conneautville, PA and Ruth Ross of Kingsville; a brother Dale Ross of Meadville, PA; nine step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce Ross in 2001 and a brother Richard Ross.

CONNEAUT — Flossie D. Murphy, age 86, of West Main Road, Conneaut, OH, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.

The daughter of the late Mike and Fannie (Pizzi) Zappitello, she was born April 27, 1918, in North Springfield, PA, and had resided in Conneaut for most of her life, except for 12 years when she lived in Melbourne, FL.

She was employed for many years with her brother at Johnnie’s Market and also worked at the Surf Side Cafe´ and Deli.

She was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church and was also involved with the senior-aide program at the Conneaut Humane Resource Center.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed embroidering, reading, flowers, and being with her family and friends.

She is survived by three sisters, Angela Dysert and Emma Zoratti, both of Conneaut, and Helen Nappi of Ashtabula; a brother, John Zappitello of Conneaut; six grandchildren, Kim, Mark, Fred, and Frank Kapen, Kathy Dunson, and Kelly Treadway; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and two step-children, Joan Kutz of Amity, PA, and Burdie Jackson of Washington, PA.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Kapen; second husband, Donald Murphy; her son, Frank Kapen; a son, Andrew in infancy; two sisters, Mary Copple and Minnie Capela; two brothers, Harold and Michael Zappitello; and a step-son, Donald Murphy.

CONNEAUT — Paul E. McGill, age 85, of Ridgeview Terrace, Ashtabula, OH, died Thursday, September 23, 2004, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born in Knoxville, TN on October 29, 1918, a son of the late Edward and Nancy McGill. He had resided in Monroe Township most of his life.

Mr. McGill owned and operated the McGill Well Drilling Company for over 25 years.

He was a member of the Gageville United Methodist Church and in his leisure time enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two daughters, Eileen Magnusen of Leesburg, FL, and Beverly Fink of Monroe Township; a son, Paul E. McGill Jr. of Hillsboro, NJ; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ila; a sister, Hattie McGill; and four brothers, Jim, Ray, Joby, and Huse McGill.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2004, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Dave Anderson, pastor of the Gageville United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Kelloggsville Cemetery.

Robert C. Kauffield

CONNEAUT — Robert C. Kauffield, age 73, of Rocky Run, Wilmington, DE, passed away July 5, 2004, at Christiana Hospital.

He was born in Conneaut, OH in 1931, the son of Harry and Marguerite Kauffield. He was a graduate of Conneaut High School and Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland.

Following graduation, he went to work for E.I. duPont de Nemours in the atomic energy division and then the film department in Wilmington. He retired in 1985 after 32 years of service.

Bob was an avid golfer with several DuPont Country Club Championships and a Delaware Senior Champion. He was a past president of the board of governors for the DuPont Country Club. Bob was also a member of the Wilmington Trail Club and enjoyed hiking.

His survivors include his wife Patricia; and cousins, Beverly Carlisle of NJ, Marguerite Conners of VT, and Ann Hawkins of North Conway, NH.

A Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in North Kingsville, OH, with The Reverend David Miller, of Lakeview United Methodist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19713.

Arrangements were locally handled by DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.
