Bonita Hasson

LITTLETON, CO — Bonita Hasson, of Littleton, CO, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004.

Bonita is survived by her mother, Ruth Cartner of Kingsville; daughter, Michelle; two brothers, Eugene and Rodney Cartner; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; father, Eugene Cartner; brother, Lloyd; sister, Linda; and twin sister, Juanita.

A Memorial Service was held in Littleton, Colorado.

Alma J. Caudill

ASHTABULA — Alma Jean Caudill, age 75, died Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at Silver Sands Shared Residency.

She was born December 5, 1928 in Floyd County, KY, the daughter of Jeff and Elizabeth (Osborne) Henson and had been an Ashtabula resident for 53 years.

On June 28, 1946, she married the love of her life, Ross Caudill Sr., and began a never ending love affair that will last for eternity.

Prior to her retirement, she operated the Doll House Ceramic Shop from her home.

A member of St. Joseph Church, Mrs. Caudill was an exceptionally talented and creative lady. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, ceramics, painting, and making porcelain dolls. She even made her own clothing patterns and outfits for her family and her dolls.

She is survived by four children, Charlene (Dalton) Dixon, Ross “Skip” (Glenis) Caudill Jr., Mickey Caudill, and Kathleen (Tom) Sandella, all of Ashtabula; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patsy Cellitti and Pam Shaffer; and three brothers, Audra Henson, Jeff Dean Henson, and Sandy Henson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross, in 1984; her beloved brother, John Boy Henson on January 19, 2000; six brothers and sisters in infancy; and her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2004, at St. Joseph Church, 3330 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula. The Reverend Fr. Philip Miller, Pastor, will preside. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

Calling Hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2004, at the DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.

Dorothy S. Harmon

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Dorothy S. Harmon, 92, formerly of East Center St., North Kingsville, Ohio, died Tuesday evening, November 30, 2004 at the Country Club Retirement Center in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was born March 7, 1912, in Pittsburgh, PA, and was the daughter of William and Mary (Shaw) Rodgers.

Mrs. Harmon received a degree in music education from Carnegie Tech and taught piano. She was employed as a buyer at the former Carlisle’s Department Store in Ashtabula, and was a member of the North Kingsville Presbyterian Church where she was also the choir director. She enjoyed playing bridge and traveling.

Survivors include two sons, David of Ashtabula, OH and Hollis of Chantilly, VA; her brother Rev. Joseph Rodgers of McMurry, PA; five Grandchildren; and five Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Glenn E. Harmon in January, 1993.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, December 3, 2004 in East Lake Cemetery, North Kingsville, OH, with the Rev. Joe Ernspiker, pastor of the Living Waters Baptist Church.

Vernon J. Nelson, MD

SPOKANE, WA — Vernon Jack Nelson, MD, passed away on November 6, 2004, at his home in Spokane, WA, under Hospice care after a hard-fought 12-year battle with cancer, becoming known as the Energizer Bunny.

Vern was born on April 11, 1948 in Ashtabula, OH, to Sidney and Henrietta Nelson. Vern lived with his family on Vineland Avenue, attending Buckeye Schools. His family moved to Kent, OH in 1964 and Vern finished his last two years of high school at Kent Roosevelt, and was graduated in 1966. After high school, Vern spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, as a computer technician, assigned to bases in the U.S. Northeast and Northwest. His last tour of duty was in Great Falls, Montana. He stayed on in Great Falls attending the College of Great Falls, earning a BS degree in 1972. Vern was awarded his MD from the University of Washington in 1977. He settled in Spokane, WA, raised his family there, and became director of the Emergency Room Departments at Valley General and St. Luke Hospitals.

Vern, a multi-talented person, restored vintage Porches; remodeled, designed, and built home; taught at the Spokane Community College and volunteered his time for Spokane Public Schools, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and the American Cancer Society. His hobbies included camping, gardening, outdoor activities, cooking, woodworking and traveling. Vern was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast, enjoying many road trips with his brother Bruce.

The last years of Vern’s life were lived in an apartment in the Brown’s Addition of Spokane. The local “Cabin Coffee” hangout became Vern’s private clubhouse, where he could be found drinking coffee and telling stories to a captive audience of friends and neighbors. Vern has identified himself as a legend in the neighborhood--a man who had a true passion for life and fought his battle with cancer with courage, dignity, and a sense of humor.

Vern is survived by his daughters, Darci (Andy) Hastings and Kristen (Nick) Lobdell, both of Spokane; his loving companion, Mary Moltke of Spokane; his mother, Henrietta (Cordell) Glaus of 2173 Prestwick Drive, Uniontown, OH 44685; his brother, Bruce (Linda) and their children, Candice and Bruce Allan (Leah), all of Las Vegas, NV; step-brothers and sisters, George (Rita) Dickie of Thibodaux, LA, Jan (Royce) Fincher of Santa Cruz, CA, Rich (Marcy) Gass of Valparaiso, IN, Barb (Terry) Rosenbaum of Okemos, MI, Kent (Janet) Glaus and Diane (Doug) Rice, both of Mogadore, OH, and Gary (Cheri) Glaus of Barberton, OH; his uncle, Lloyd Schumann of Geneva, OH, and cousins, David (Susy), Peter (Beverley) Schumann, and Jill (Garvin) Rumberger; his aunt, Brenda Spadaro, cousins, Kellie (Kirk) Peine and Shellie (Dave) Byrne, all of Madison, OH; his aunt, Evelyn Brandenburg of Ojai, CA; and many loving family members and friends to whom Vern served as an inspiration to live life to the fullest for each day that was given to him.

Vern was preceded in death by his father, Sidney; his grandparents, Peter and Anna Nelson and Henry and Dale Schumann; and his step-fathers, Allan Dickie and Charles Gass.

A time to greet the family and share memories will be held at the home of Bob and Lu Lee, 3234 Vineland Avenue, Ashtabula at 4 p.m., Sunday, December 5, 2004. A private family service will be held at a future date when a portion of Vern’s ashes will be interred with his Schumann family in the Gageville Cemetery and with his Nelson family in the Edgewood Cemetery.

James E. Bunnell

EAST SPRINGFIELD, PA — James E. Bunnell, age 72, of East Springfield, PA, died Friday, December 3, 2004, in Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA.

Born in Conneaut, OH, October 10, 1932, the son of the late Fay and Charlotte E. (Lewis) Bunnell, he had resided in Conneaut most of his life. He moved to East Springfield, PA in 1997.

Mr. Bunnell was self-employed and owned The Bunnell Construction Company from where he retired in 1986.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ and was a member and Past Exulted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. #256.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing, was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching the Browns and Indians.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife Carol, to whom he had been married for the past 17 years; a daughter, Linda (Keith) Erickson of Martinez, CA; two sons, Ted (Asma) of Concord, CA and Jay (Nancy) of Naples, FL; a stepdaughter, Melissa (Dean) Jenkins of Conneaut; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Bunnell of Conneaut.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Greenfield and Dorothy Bunnell; and four brothers, Paul, Clair, Merle, and Neal Bunnell.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, December 5, 2004, at 5:30 p.m. at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Reverend Walter Coy, pastor of the United Church of Christ, officiating.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Interment will be in the East Conneaut Cemetery at a date to be announced.

The family suggests memorials be made in his name to the Regional Cancer Center in Erie, PA. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

William Chester Smith

CONNEAUT – William Chester Smith, 61, of Conneaut passed away Thursday evening, December 2, 2004 at University Hospital in Cleveland from complications due to pneumonia.

Born Dec. 28, 1942 in Hall, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Wade and Ina Jean Smith.

Bill attended school in Buckannon, West Virginia and served in the US Army. Prior to his disability he was a welder at Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co., and a security guard at CEI on Lake Road.

He enjoyed reading and collecting a variety of items from cigarette lighters to die cast miniature vehicles. He had a real passion for Native American history, music and statues, with his favorite being “The End of the Trail.”

He took great pride in keeping the lawn nicely mowed. Bill was in his glory when he won an auction on ebay and was always ready for a “heated” discussion. Although he had resided in the Conneaut area almost 40 years, his heart was still in West Virginia.

Survivors include his wife Connie (Law) with whom he would have celebrated their 38th anniversary Dec. 10; one son, Shawn; two daughters, Mary (Sean) White and Staci Gilbert, all of Conneaut; three sisters, Iva (John) Mitter, Kingsville; Linda (Rondal) Bennett, Volga, W. Va.; and Pam (Jeff) Harris, Lost Creek, W. Va., and two grandsons, TJ and James Behnke of Conneaut.

At Bill’s request, no calling hours will be observed. Memories will be shared during a memorial service 3 p.m. Sunday at Conneaut Church of Christ, 448 W. Main Rd., Conneaut, with Tim Kraus, pastor, officiating.

Winneifred M. Brewer

MONROE TWP. – Winniefred M. Brewer, 84, of Center Road, Monroe Township, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, in the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.

Born in Conneaut, September 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Laurel and Amanda (Tenney) Davis, and had resided in the Conneaut area her entire life.

Mrs. Brewer was a homemaker, and a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Salem Rebekah Lodge #385, and in her leisure time enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking and baking.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Brewer of Winter Haven, FL, and Laurine Gilkerson of Jefferson; a son Gene of Monroe Township; two grandchildren, Randy and Amy Gilkerson; a brother Donald Davis of Monroe Township, and a niece Martha Gross of Conneaut.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, and a sister Vivian Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. Richard Smith, pastor of the Monroe United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Kelloggsville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until the time of the service.

Mary A. Wright

ASHTABULA — Mary Ann McCain Wright, age 102, of Lake Avenue, died Saturday, December 04, 2004, at Park Haven Home.

She was born May 8, 1902 in Long Run, OH, the daughter of Oberton and Annabell (Brown) Dixon and had been an Ashtabula resident most of her life.

She worked as a domestic for several prominent area families and was employed by Community Action for several years.

A founding member of Peoples Baptist Church, Mrs. Wright served with the nurse’s guild, the mission choir, and on the mission boards.

She loved to cook and delighted in cooking for and spending time with the five living generations of her family.

Her survivors include two children, Helen “Peaches” Coles of Wheeling, WV and Reverend Thomas McCain (wife, Mitzi) of Ashtabula; one sister, Harriet Mayfield of Wheeling, WV; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Menford McCain; her second husband, William Wright; two children, Lewis McCain and Pauline McCain; six sisters; four brothers; and her parents.

R. James Dowler

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Richard James Dowler, age 75, of Donna Drive, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at his home.

He was born October 10, 1929 in Ashtabula, OH, the son of Wallace L. and Ida (Andrus) Dowler and had been a resident of East 40th Street for many years.

A 1947 graduate of Harbor High School, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from The Ohio State University through the ROTC Program and later earned a data processing degree from Kent State University, Ashtabula Campus.

Prior to his retirement, he worked 23 years as treasurer for Iten Industries.

A member of the Conneaut Church of Christ since 1973, he also belonged to the Ashtabula Exchange Club, where he served as secretary for 25 years and helped establish Exchange Clubs in Geneva, Rock Creek and Conneaut.

He collected stamps, coins, Time and Life Magazines, and enjoyed gardening, roses, and working on his former home and yard on East 40th Street. He was particularly fond of his 1929 antique Marmon car.

His survivors include his son-in-law, Mark D. Bovee and one grandson, Marc J. Bovee, both of Kingsville Township.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Dowler in 2001; his daughter, Sharon Bovee on January 13, 2004; one brother, Herbert King Dowler; one sister, Betty Jean Cowler Colvin; and his parents.

Nora P. Fails

CONNEAUT — Nora P. Fails, age 76, of Conneaut, OH, entered into eternal rest Monday evening, December 6, 2004, at Ashtabula County Medical Center, Ashtabula, OH.

She was born August 29, 1928 in Penn Line, PA, and was a daughter of Wood B. and Eva E. (Fails) Taft. Mrs. Fails spent her childhood in East Springfield, PA, graduating in 1947 from West Springfield High School.

She was employed as a nurse’s aide at Brown Memorial Hospital for 20 years and had also worked at General Electric.

She was a member of State Line United Methodist Church, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

Survivors include her son, Robert E. (Janet) Fails of Rocky River, OH; three grandchildren, Julie (Scott) Winter, Amy (Brandt) Baruxes, and Robert P. Fails; and two sisters, Marguerite Fails and Bertha Sheldon, both of Conneaut, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carson R. Fails; her daughter, Janet M. Fails; three sisters, Nellie Taft in childhood, Esther English, and Helen Waid; and four brothers, William H., Donald F., Gaylord M., and John F. Taft.

Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2004, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Richard L. Smith, pastor of State Line United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in East Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield, PA.

 Don “Breeze” Wallace Breedlove

NORTH KINGSVILLE – Don “Breeze” Wallace Breedlove, 70, of West Center St., North Kingsville, died Monday morning, December 6, 2004 at his home.

Born in Breedlove, West Virginia of Preston County on April 6, 1934, he was the son of the late Glen and Bessie (Douglas) Breedlove. The family moved to Cresaptown, MD the next year, where Don was a member of the Cresaptown Methodist Church.

He graduated in 1952 from Allegany High School in Cumberland, MD. He moved to Ashtabula shortly thereafter, where he was employed by Reliance Electric in 1955. Don was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1956 and served on active duty in the infantry in Korea and Fort Benning, GA. After being honorably discharged as a Specialist in November, 1958, Mr. Breedlove served in U. S. Army Reserves until October 1962. Don returned to work at Reliance Electric and retired in 1996 after 41 years.

Don and Judith Carol (Olin) were married on November 7, 1964 in North Kingsville and recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a party with family and friends.

In his younger years, Don enjoyed playing sports: including softball, basketball and bowling. Later on, Don loved golfing, fishing and playing cards with his family and friends, especially in Canaan Valley, WVA. He also coached for several years his sons’ Little League baseball teams, and was a member of the East Ashtabula Club.

He is survived by his wife, Judith, three sons; Donald Wesley (Arlene) of Leesburg, VA, Gregory Wayne (Julie) of Shaker Heights, and Kevin Wade (Shelly) of Cordova, TN; one granddaughter, Caitlin of Shaker Heights; two sisters, Mrs. Ethelda Campbell of Ashtabula, and Mrs. Yvonne Fowler of Nashville, TN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Douglas, Glendean, Loren, Curtis, Gerald and Emerson.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday Dec. at 11 a.m. at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, with Rev. David Hines, Pastor of Kingsville Baptist Church.

Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Dec. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Tenho Vern Jarvinen

CONNEAUT – Tenho V. Jarvinen, age 74, of Conneaut, died early Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Tenho was born on May 30, 1930 on Drummond Island, Michigan, the son of the late Tenho and Miho “Hilma” Jarvinen.

Tenho was the apartment manager for the Pamela Park Estates in Conneaut. He served 25 years in the military. He served nine years with the Army and 16 with the Air Force. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion.

Besides his parents, Tenho was preceded in death by his sister, Gertrude Griffin.

Tenho is survived by his wife, Fern E. (Payne) Jarvinen and four children, Phyllis Jarvinen and her husband Mark Sandell of Wisconsin, Joellen Beaudoin and her husband Robert of Phoenix, AZ, Donald Jarvinen and his wife, Bobbie Jean of S. Dakota and Gayle Jarvinen of California; two step children, James Breedon of Lake City, FL and Marian Hoadley and her husband, Robert of Geneva; three sisters, Bertha Gilbert of Drummond Island, MI, Helen Laakso and Lillian Anderson, both of St. Ignas, MI; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Jessica Smith and a great granddaughters, Kelsie.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service with full Military Honors will be provided by the Erie/Crawford Burial Detail and will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. at the JEAN EVANS THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME, 11883 Main Street, East Springfield, Pa. Jack H. Garrity

CONNEAUT – Jack H. Garrity, 77 of Cummins Ave., Conneaut, died Wednesday afternoon, December 8, 2004 at his home.

A former resident of Erie, Wattsburg and Kane, Pennsylvania, Mr. Garrity was born on Feb. 17, 1927 in Erie, a son of the late Edgar and Alice (Batten) Garrity. He had been a resident of Conneaut for the past five years.

For nearly 30 years Mr. Garrity lived in Arizona where he was employed as a food buyer for Rosarita Corp. in Mesa and had also served as superintendent for a copper mine.

He enjoyed rock hunting, making jewelry, hunting, fishing and tooling leather.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis (Davis) Garrity, whom he married on Aug. 6, 1949; two daughters, Linda Jones of Apache Junction, Arizona and Becky (Terry) Hess of Conneaut; a son Jack H. III of Oro Valley, Arizona; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Martin J. “Marty” Szalai

MONROE TOWNSHIP – Martin J. “Marty” Szalai, 78 of Monroe Township, died Thursday afternoon, December 9, 2004 at Inn-Conneaut Health Center following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Szalai was born on March 14, 1926 in Boyers, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Martin and Elizabeth (Naykas) Szalai and moved to this area in childhood.

He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. He was employed as a welder in the maintenance department at the former RMI. An avid sportsman, he was a member of the Monroe Athletic Club, where he played on its baseball team for many years. Mr. Szalai also coached and umpired Little League teams from Monroe when his children were playing; was an avid bowler, being a member of the Brothers Bowling Association; and also enjoyed farming and raising cattle. Mr. Szalai played guitar and was a member of a number of country and western bands sometimes with his late wife Norma, who played the bass. They especially loved polka’s.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Jim) Reichley and Robin (Butch) Leatherman, both of Monroe; a son Eugene (Mary Jean) Szalai, also of Monroe; three sisters, Elizabeth Passmore of Monroe, Cheryl Sharp of Conneaut and Suzie Tiche of Grove City, Pa. Also surviving are four brothers, John, Steven, Michael and Daniel, all of Monroe; ten grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren.

Mr. Szalai was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma on July 26, 2002; a son, Marty on July 19, 2004; and sisters, Peggy Smith and Sophia Tiche.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty Street with the Rev. Jerry Webb, Pastor of the Kelloggsville Church of the Nazarene, officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens with military honors.

Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to either the Monroe Vol. Fire Department or the Animal Protective League.

ASHTABULA — Mary Ann McCain Wright, age 102, of Lake Avenue, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Park Haven Home.

She was born May 8, 1902 in Long Run, OH, the daughter of Oberton and Annabell (Brown) Dixon and had been an Ashtabula resident most of her life.

She worked as a domestic for several prominent area families and was employed by Community Action for several years.

A founding member of Peoples Baptist Church, Mrs. Wright served with the nurse’s guild, the mission choir, and on the mission boards.

She loved to cook and delighted in cooking for and spending time with the five living generations of her family.

Her survivors include two children, Helen “Peaches” Coles of Wheeling, WV and Reverend Thomas McCain (wife Mitzi) of Ashtabula; one sister, Harriet Mayfield of Wheeling, WV; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Menford McCain; her second husband, William Wright; two children, Lewis McCain and Pauline McCain; six sisters; four brothers; and her parents.

A Service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2004, at Peoples Baptist Church, 3837 West Avenue, Ashtabula. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum, North Kingsville.

ALBION, PENNSYLVANIA — Sandra L. Rice, 34, of Cherry Hill Rd., Albion, Pennsylvania, died Monday morning, December 13, 2004, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born June 29, 1970, in Conneaut, and was a daughter of Robert J. Tinney and Christine (Cheney) Tinney.

A 1988 graduate of Conneaut High School, she was employed for twelve years as a letter carrier at the Conneaut Post Office. She not only enjoyed delivering the mail to her customers, but also she enjoyed the brief conversations she had with them. Sandra enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, horseback riding, and four-wheeling with her husband, family and friends. Sandra also enjoyed NASCAR, playing with her dog Haley, shooting pool, and playing horseshoes. Sandra was loved by all and will be missed dearly.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Wayne N. Rice of Albion, Pa.; her stepson, Brandon Rice of Albion; parents, Robert Tinney and Christine Tinney, both of Conneaut; stepmother Kathleen Tinney of Ashtabula; sisters, Jayne (Robert) Danylchuk of Tucson, Arizona, Jill (Gregory) Miniard of Geneva, Sara (Chris) Forester of Conneaut; stepsister Jennifer Light of Chicago, Illinois; stepbrother Josh Light of Ashtabula; nephew Christopher Forester of Conneaut; grandmother Connie Tinney of Appleton, Wisconsin; in-laws William G. and Bonnie S. Rice of Albion, and Faye Rice of Painesville, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Lucinda and Russell Cheney, and Carl Tinney.

PIERPONT TOWNSHIP — Clara M. Hudson Olin, age 86, of Marcy Road, Pierpont Township, died early Monday morning, December 13, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. Mrs. Olin had resided at the Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center the past two months and lived the previous year at the Villa-on-the-Lake in Conneaut.

She was born October 11, 1918, in Pierpont Township, the daughter of Paul and Kate (Chidister) Thompson, and has resided in Pierpont Township all of her life. Mrs. Olin spent more than 20 years as Activity Director at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, retiring in 1981.

Mrs. Olin was a member of the Pierpont Presbyterian Church, where she served as deaconess for several years and held various other offices in the church; she was also a member of Orion Lodge #12, O.E.S. She served on the board for the government nutritional site at the Pierpont Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, needlework and traveling.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul W. and Christine Hudson of Pierpont Township, and Duane H. and Roxanne Hudson of Saybrook Township; seven grandchildren, Scott Banning of Parma, Catherine Olsen of Dallas, TX, Timothy Hudson of Pierpont Township, Kelly Scoville of Geneva, Matthew Hudson of Kingsville Township, Jacquelin Hudson of Columbus, and Katie Hudson of Saybrook Township; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Howard E. Hudson, in 1966; her second husband, Arnold Olin, in 1978; two daughters, Jean A. Banning in 2002, and Vera M. Andrews in 2003; and a sister, Hazel Dewey, in 2003.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 18, 2004, at 12 p.m. (noon) at the FLEMING FUNERAL HOME, INC., 49 West Jefferson Street, Jefferson, with the Reverend Edward Diehl, of the Pierpont Presbyterian Church, officiating. ALPHONSE O. GUTIERREZ

CONNEAUT – Alphonse O. Gutierrez, 83, of Conneaut, died Friday morning, December 17,2004 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico and was a son of Juan and Soledad (Oajaca) Gutierrez.

Mr. Gutierrez was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the 872nd Artillery Battalion in the northern France campaign. He moved to Conneaut 23 years ago from California where he had been employed as mechanical supervisor with American Can Company, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, member and past president of Conneaut Kiwanis Club, and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife Marjorie J. (Hawes) Gutierrez whom he married July 25, 1970; a daughter, Mary Ellen Velez of Sacramento, CA; three grandchildren, Stephanie Contreras of San Mateo, CA, Connie Duran of Willits, CA, and Rebecca Miller of Walnut Creek, CA; seven great grandchildren, Michael, Daniella, Anthony, Marcella, Isabella, Stephen and Samantha; his sister, Josephine Banuelos of Sacramento, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews including Alicia Banuelos of Sacramento, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Tomas, Johnny, Andrew and Chavelo; and a sister Dolores Sanchez.

FLAVIAN G. GAUKEL

CONNEAUT – Flavian G. Gaukel, age 84 of Conneaut, died early Friday afternoon, December 17, 2004 at the Villa at the Lake in Conneaut.

Mr. Gaukel was born March 4, 1920 in Conneaut, the son of Edward and Agnes (Rhein) Gaukel. He was a graduate of Conneaut High Class of 1938. He served in the Merchant Marines as a lieutenant and also sailed as an engineer on the Great Lakes. He later worked for Union Carbide and retired from the Cleveland Illuminating Company in 1985.

Flavian is a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, a life time Honorary member of the Knights of Columbus Council 627, a 45 year member of the Leo J. Kane Assembly, Past Grand Knight and Knight of the Year. He was very active in church activities and enjoyed volunteering to work for all the functions of the Knights of Columbus for charity throughout the years. He enjoyed gardening, his tractor, woodworking and socializing at the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed traveling with his family to places of historic nature. Flavian especially loved to spend time with his family, friends and grandchildren.

Flavian is survived by his wife Delma Byers Gaukel whom he married Dec. 27, 1947, celebrating 57 years of marriage on next Monday, three sons Peter and Sandra Gaukel of Conneaut, Charles and Gail Gaukel of Ashburn, Virginia, and Thomas and Patty Gaukel of St. Petersburg, Fl; two daughters, Kathleen and Michael Quam of Seattle, WA., Sylvia and Terry Atkinson of Conneaut; a sister Caroline Hoskin of Ashtabula; cousin Mary Ellen Orrennama; several nieces and nephews and grandchildren Anna, Taylor, Daniel, Allison, Carolyn, Diana, Kristin, Joseph, Sara, Matthew, David, Chad, Brian and Marnie.

Mr. Gaukel was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Lorraine Smith.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 21. 2 p.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 480 State St., Conneaut with Father Gregory Fedor of St. Mary Orwell officiating. Burial will take place on Wednesday Dec. 22. at St. John Cemetery, Girard, PA.

ASHTABULA - Jeffrey William McFarland, 40, of Columbus Ave.,, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at Cleveland Clinic.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1963 in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of William and Patricia (Bubb) McFarland. He was a lifetime resident of Ashtabula.

He worked at Federated Auto Parts and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, trapping and generally enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife Debra A. (Robinson) McFarland, whom he married July 3, 1999; one son, Derrick McFarland of Kingsville; one daughter, Melissa McFarland of Kingsville; 2 stepsons, Michael Wakefield of Dayton and Joshua Wakefield of Las Vegas; one grandchild, Alijah; three brothers, Jaime McFarland of Kingsville, and Larri and Gregory, both of Ashtabula; three sisters, Linda Into of Ashtabula, Lisa Justice of Jefferson, and Kimberly Jackson of Conneautville; and his parents.

He was preceded in death by one son, Joel McFarland; two brothers, Michael and Billy McFarland; and one sister, Robin Lewis.

Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated his own trucking service and worked for Nelson Sand and Gravel and previously Simak Trucking.

ROBERT E. BEARCE

CONNEAUT — Robert E. (Red) Bearce, age 78, of Millard Avenue, Conneaut, OH, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, in the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born in Monroe Township on November 24, 1926 the son of the late Arthur L. and Charlotte (Johnson) Bearce, he had resided in the area his entire life.

Mr. Bearce was employed by the Operating Engineers as a heavy equipment operator and retired after 49 years of service.

He was a member of the BPO Elks #256, the Loyal Order of Moose #472, and the Lake Erie Boat Club. In his leisure time, he was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Doris (Tuttle) Bearce, to whom he’d been married to for the past 59 years; a daughter, JoAnn (John) Cole of Concord, NC; a son, Robert J. (Patty) Bearce of Conneaut; eight grandchildren, Ted and Angela Grubke of TX, Traci and Bobby Canady of NC, Bobbie Jo Bearce of CA, Mark Bearce of Conneaut, Reina and Dorian Durenicks of TX Alyson Fuller of IL, Rick and Kathy Fuller of Conneaut, and Shane Cole of TN; and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathie Bearce; and a brother, Russell Bearce.

PAUL GARY

CONNEAUT, OH — Paul Gary, 83, of Conneaut, OH, died Monday morning, December 20, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. He was born April 8, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan, and was a son of Andrew and Teofila Szewczuk.

A Conneaut resident since the age of 10, Mr. Gary was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army having served in Europe as a cook with the Rainbow Division. He was employed for a time at the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad before joining Holdson's Bakery in Conneaut which he later purchased and ran as the Electrik Maid. He later worked for the former Exomet before joining Bethlehem Steamship Lines from which he retired as second cook and baker.

Mr. Gary served for a time as an auxiliary police officer in Conneaut. He was a member and past commander of Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion and also served as district and county commanders, and state committeeman. He enjoyed reading and bowling.

Survivors include his wife Virginia (Wright) Gary whom he married June 2, 1947; two daughters. Heather Kantola of Port Clinton, OH, and Lark (Al) Yonkovitz of Mountain Top, PA; a son Lance (Martha) Gary of North Olmsted, OH; two sisters, Sophie Mathews and Jenny Tobiaski both of Monroe Township, OH; five grandchildren, Ryan, Darci, Alexis, Trilby, and Kacey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Dorothy Sebio, Mary Bromfield, and Verna Pyles; and a brother Andrew.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 23, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev. MAUREEN R. DAVEY

ASHTABULA — Maureen (Moe) R. Davey, age 71, of Union Avenue, Ashtabula, OH, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at her home after a long illness.

She was born October 23, 1933 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Homer and Ruth Wharram. She was a resident in the area all her life and graduated from Kingsville High School.

Maureen was employed at Ward Products as a payroll clerk and was a long-distance operator at Ohio Bell, but most people knew her from her 26-year career at the Ashtabula Clinic. She also spent many years at the Ashtabula Little League as a team mother and as a concession stand worker.

Moe served as a Board member for eight years with the Big Brothers/Sisters organization. She was involved with Bethany Lutheran Church in several areas and was a volunteer at the Red Cross Bloodmobile, and the Ohio Reads Program. She was active in several volunteer duties at the Ashtabula County Medical Center and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She belonged to and received great support from the “Living With Cancer” support group at the Wellness and Total Learning Center in Ashtabula.

Moe was a caregiver first, but she also enjoyed reading, baking, yard and garden work, golf, and the Cleveland Indians.

She is survived by two sons, Mike of Baltimore, MD and Mark (Carmen) of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Ford and Alexandra of Baltimore and Michelle and Meredith of Houston; and a brother, Bruce (Mary) Wharram of Sylvania, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and her sister, Sharon Fortune.

A Memorial Service will be Monday, December 27, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 933 Michigan Avenue, Ashtabula, with Reverend Thomas Ford officiating. Burial will be in Lulu Falls Cemetery in Kingsville.

Calling Hour will be from 10 a.m. until the time of Service at the Church.

JOSEPH A. COOPER

ASHTABULA – Joseph Allen Cooper, age 66, of Fort Avenue, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born December 19, 1938 in Ashtabula, he was the son of Joseph and Virginia (Moore) Cooper. He graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1957

Joseph served in the National Guard for twenty-three years before being Honorably discharged.

He worked as a mechanic for Broughton Beverage for 25 years before retiring; he also worked for Advance Auto Parts for six years as a salesman.

He loved hunting, fishing and his grandchildren. Joseph belonged to the Army Navy Union Club, and the Young Men Social Club.

Survivors include his wife, Clara, whom he married July 19, 1959 in Ashtabula; five children: daughter, Tammy Dyne of Linesville, daughter, Tomma (George) Godsave of Linesville, daughter, Tracy (Todd) Rowe of North Kingsville, and son, Todd (Kathleen) Cooper of Orwell; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother, Virginia Cooper of Ashtabula; and brother, Terry Cooper of Lewisburg, OH.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph H. Cooper; son, Timothy A. Cooper; and grandson, Matthew A. Cooper.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 24, 2004, at DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula, OH, Reverend Arvid Whitmore, Pastor of Prospect Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.

Calling Hours will be Thursday, December 23, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.

CHARLES J. “CHUCK” ASHCROFT

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Charles J. “Chuck” Ashcroft, 50, of North Kingsville, died on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born on January 12, 1954 in Kingston, New York.

Mr. Ashcroft worked at Grand River Partners, Inc. in Painesville as the Executive Director. He married Sandy Horst on July 12, 1983 in Portland, Oregon. He was a graduate of Ashtabula Leadership and loved music, nature, spending time hiking, kayaking and swimming. He had a passion for cooking pasta made with his special sauce. Chuck’s greatest love was for his family and spending time with children.

Survivors include his wife Sandy (Horst) Ashcroft of Kingsville, Ohio; his daughter Bailey Ashcroft of North Kingsville; his son Ben Ashcroft also of North Kingsville; sister Denise Makarius of New York; 2 brothers, Robert Ashcroft of Florida and Ken Ashcroft of Oregon; and his father, Robert Ashcroft of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine (Greco) Ashcroft.

 WESLEY J. BOROSKI SR.

CONNEAUT — Wesley J. Boroski Sr., 70, of Conneaut, OH, died Wednesday evening, December 29, 2004, at the V.A. Medical Center in Erie, PA, following a two-year illness. He was born March 12, 1934, in Beckley, WV, and was a son of Joseph and Adeline (Wozniak) Boroski.

Following high school graduation, he played professional baseball in the AAA League before entering the U.S. Army. A Conneaut resident for 39 years, he was employed as an auto body repairman for a number of car dealerships, including Stump’s, Ferraro Ford, George Laituri, and Al Mucci. He was a member of the Cowle Post #151 of the American Legion, the Army Navy Union Post #111, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2836, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #408, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #472. He enjoyed playing the accordion, golfing, fishing, and being with his family.

Survivors include four daughters, Theresa (David) Cochran of Westfield, NY, Mauresa (Richard) Tosatto of Wadsworth, OH, Cynthia Taylor of Jefferson, OH, and Michelle (Douglas) Marshall of Westfield, NY; two sons, Tony of Conneaut, OH, and Wesley J. (Natalie) Boroski, Jr., of Monroe Township, OH; a sister, Felicia Loftus of Cleveland, OH; a brother, Albert Boroski of Hudson, OH; and ten grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Marie, on April 1, 1993.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 3, 2005, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas, pastor of St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini Churches, officiating.

Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, January 2, 2005, from 5 to 8 PM.

HARLEY L. DALRYMPLE

CONNEAUT — Harley L. Dalrymple, age 94, formerly of Middle Road, Monroe Township, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.

Born in Monroe Township, OH, October 26, 1910, the son of the late Rue and Hattie (Wheeler) Dalrymple, he had been a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Dalrymple retired from the former Nickel Plate Railroad in 1975 as an engineer. He also sailed on the Great Lakes for several years.

He was a member of the Church of God and had also attended the Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Dalrymple raised registered beef cattle for many years, and his pride and joy was his team of Belgium horses.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, to whom he’d been married for the past 69 years; a daughter, Rose Winkler of Cleveland; a son, Lee Dalrymple of Monroe Township; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, S.H. Dalrymple; and a sister, Ellen Aguino.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 3, 2005, at the THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, OH, with the Reverend Carson Robson, of the Church of God, officiating. Interment will follow at Kelloggsville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2005.
